Abstract:We have for the first time experimentally demonstrated a high repetition-rate picosecond fiber laser source at 2 mu m by a spectrally masked phase modulation technique, where a phase modulator driven by a sinusoidal RF signal and a fiber Bragg grating are used to convert the output of a 2-mu m continuous-wave single-longitudinal-mode diode to a picosecond pulse train. The repetition-rate of this laser source can be continuously and flexibly tuned from 1 to 6 GHz by simply changing the RF signal. We achieved a shortest pulse width of similar to 60 ps and a high SNR of >75 dB at an operating frequency of 6 GHz. The simplicity and robustness of such a picosecond laser as well as the ability to synchronize with an external trigger make it a highly useful source for 2-mu m high speed optical data processing, communications, and metrology.

Abstract:To accommodate the demand of exponentially increased global wireless data traffic, the prospective data rates for wireless communication in the market place will soon reach 100 Gb/s and beyond. In the lab environment, wireless transmission throughput has been elevated to the level of over 100 Gb/s attributed to the development of photonic-assisted millimeter wave and terahertz (THz) technologies. However, most of recent demonstrations with over 100 Gb/s data rates are based on spatial or frequency division multiplexing techniques, resulting in increased system's complexity and energy consumption. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a single channel 0.4 THz photonic-wireless link achieving a net data rate of beyond 100 Gb/s by using a single pair of THz emitter and receiver, without employing any spatial/frequency division multiplexing techniques. The high throughput up to 106 Gb/s within a single THz channel is enabled by combining spectrally efficient modulation format, ultrabroadband THz transceiver and advanced digital signal processing routine. Besides that, our demonstration from system-wide implementation viewpoint also features high transmission stability, and hence shows its great potential to not only decrease the system's complexity, butalsomeet the requirements of prospective data rates for bandwidth-hungryshort-range wireless applications.

Abstract:Abstract With the explosive growth of global wireless data traffic, the Terahertz band (0.3–10 THz) is promising for ultrafast wireless communications, due to the enormous available bandwidth [1]. Photonic generation of THz carriers displays extremely large tunable range and modulation bandwidth, making it nearly ideal for THz communications. However, the current photonics-based THz carrier generators are based on discrete bulky components [2] with high cost and energy consumption, which hinder them from practical applications. Here, we present an injection-locked heterodyne source based on generic foundry-fabricated photonic integrated circuits (PIC) attached to a photo-mixing uni-travelling carrier photodiode (UTC-PD), generating high-purity THz carriers for high-speed and long-distance wireless communication. The generated THz carrier can span from 0 to 1.4 THz, determined by the tunable wavelength spacing between the two distributed feedback (DFB) modes within the range 0-10.7 nm. We show that a generated 0.4 THz carrier transmits a record-high single-channel net rate of 131 Gbit/s over 10.7 m of wireless distance with only − 24 dBm emitted THz power, by employing 16-QAM-OFDM modulation and a nonlinear equalization technique. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest data rate for a single-channel THz wireless transmission and requires the lowest THz power/bitrate/distance. The scheme of the monolithic dual-DFB PIC based THz generation shows a great potential for fully integrated, cost-effective and energy-efficient THz transmitters.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate an ultrafast terahertz (THz) photonic wireless communication link in the 350 GHz band with up to 100 Gbit/s data rate, with an emphasis on extending its wireless reach. By combining the techniques of using a cutting-edge narrow-band uni-traveling-carrier photodiode (UTC-PD) as the THz photo-mixing emitter, spectrally efficient modulation formats and advanced digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms, we successfully transmit 25 GBaud/s 16-quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) signals (overall 100 Gbit/s data rate) over a 350 GHz wireless link with an extended distance of 2 m. This achievement pushes the accessibility of ultrafast 100 Gbit/s wireless communication beyond the state-of-the-art, and makes 100 Gbit/s ultrafast THz wireless communication systems promising for future smart high speed wireless access services.

Abstract:We report all-fiber tunable ultrahigh-repetition-rate sub-picosecond pulse sources around 1550 nm. The sources are based on cascaded four wave mixing in an erbium-ytterbium co-doped fiber without extra nonlinear fiber. They are seeded by a spacing-tunable phase conjugated dual-wavelength parametric light source centered at 1550 nm. The repetition rate of the pulse sources can be tuned continuously in the range of 0.75-2.75 THz by adjusting the wavelength spacing of the dual-wavelength light source. We use auto-correlator to measure the waveform of the pulses. The duration of the pulses is about 100 fs.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a photonic method of generating frequency quadrupling signal for millimeter-wave (mm-wave) wireless communication system. The frequency quadrupling scheme is based on carriers cancellation within an integrated dual-parallel Mach–Zehnder modulator (DPMZM), thus avoiding the use of an optical filter or an electrical phase shifter. The effects of modulation-depth on the power level of generated mm-wave signal as well as on the system performance of wireless transmission are analyzed theoretically and measured experimentally. In the experiment, transmission of 155Mbps OOK baseband data on a photonic-generated 40GHz mm-wave over a length of 25km standard single-mode fiber (SMF) and 20m wireless distance with error free is successfully demonstrated.

Abstract:The 2 mu m wavelength band has become a promising candidate to be the next communication window. We demonstrate high-speed modulators based on a 220 nm silicon-on-insulator platform working at a wavelength of 1950 nm, using the free carrier plasma dispersion effect in silicon. A Mach-Zehnder interferometer modulator and a microring modulator have been characterized. At 1950 nm, the carrier-depletion modulator operates at a data rate of 20 Gbit/s with an extinction ratio of 5.8 dB and insertion loss of 13 dB. The modulation efficiency (V-pi (.) L-pi) is 2.68 V(.)cm at 4 V reverse bias. The device operation is broadband, and we also characterize its performance at 1550 nm. At 1550 nm, an open eye is obtained at 30 Gbit/s. The difference in bandwidth is caused by the bandwidth limit of the 2 mu m measurement setup. We also show a ring modulator paired with a low power integrated driver working in hybrid carrier depletion and injection mode at a data rate of 3 Gbit/s with power consumption of 2.38 pJ/bit in the 2 mu m wavelength range. This work is a proof of principle demonstration and paves a route toward a full silicon-based transceiver in the 2 mu m window. Abstract:We demonstrate a simple, robust, and cost-effective method of generating high-speed multiwavelength picosecond optical pulses. This method is based on chirp compression of phase-modulated light, followed by nonlinear pulse compression and reshaping with a double-side Mamyshev reshaper. We show that this method becomes power efficient when the repetition rate is increased to 25 GHz. Wavelength-tunable optical pulses with a repetition rate of 25 GHz and pulse width of ∼2 ps, which can be temporally multiplexed to 100 GHz, are experimentally obtained over a large spectral range with moderate electrical and optical power. Simultaneous pulse generation on four wavelengths is demonstrated.

Abstract:The 2-m wave band is emerging as a potential new window for optical telecommunications with several distinct advantages over the traditional 1.55m region. First of all, the hollow-core photonic band gap fiber (HC-PBGF) is an emerging transmission fiber candidate with ultra-low nonlinearity and lowest latency (0.3 slower than light propagating in vacuum) that has its minimum loss within the 2-m wavelength band. Second, the thulium-doped fiber amplifier that operates in this spectral region provides significantly more bandwidth than the erbium-doped fiber amplifier. In this paper, we demonstrate a single-channel 2-m transmitter capable of delivering >52 Gbit/s data signals, which is twice the capacity previously demonstrated. To achieve this, we employ discrete multitone modulation via direct current modulation of a FabryPerot semiconductor laser. The 4.4-GHz modulation bandwidth of the laser is enhanced by optical injection locking, providing up to 11GHz modulation bandwidth. Transmission over 500-m and 3.8-km samples of HC-PBGF is demonstrated.

Abstract:Controlling femtosecond optical pulses with temporal precision better than one cycle of the carrier field has a profound impact on measuring and manipulating interactions between light and matter. We explore pulses that are carved from a continuous-wave laser via electro-optic modulation and realize the regime of sub-cycle optical control without a mode-locked resonator. Our ultrafast source, with a repetition rate of 10 GHz, is derived from an optical-cavity-stabilized laser and a microwave-cavity-stabilized electronic oscillator. Sub-cycle timing jitter of the pulse train is achieved by coherently linking the laser and oscillator through carrier-envelope phase stabilization enabled by a photonic-chip supercontinuum that spans up to 1.9 octaves across the near infrared. Moreover, the techniques we report are relevant for other ultrafast lasers with repetition rates up to 30 GHz and may allow stable few-cycle pulses to be produced by a wider range of sources.

Abstract:Photonics offers unique capabilities for quantum information processing (QIP) such as room-temperature operation, the scalability of nanophotonics, and access to ultrabroad bandwidths and consequently ultrafast operation. Ultrashort-pulse sources of quantum states in nanophotonics are an important building block for achieving scalable ultrafast QIP, however, their demonstrations so far have been sparse. Here, we demonstrate a femtosecond biphoton source in dispersion-engineered periodically poled lithium niobate nanophotonics. We measure 17 THz of bandwidth for the source centered at 2.09 \textmu m, corresponding to a few optical cycles, with a brightness of 8.8 GHz/mW. Our results open new paths towards realization of ultrafast nanophotonic QIP.

Abstract:A dual-wavelength optical Gaussian pulse generation scheme based on a single-driven dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator with subsequent Mamyshev reshaping is proposed. Experimental results show that nearly chirp-free Gaussian pulses with a full width at half maximum of 2.7-ps and a repetition rate of 25-GHz on 2 wavelengths are achieved simultaneously. By changing the central wavelengths of the continuous wave light and the optical bandpass filter, nearly transform-limited optical Gaussian pulses are obtained over the C-band. The pulse source is further employed in a 100-Gbit/s on-off keying optical time division multiplexing transmission system. Abstract:Limited by dispersion-induced pulse overlap, the frame rate of serial time-encoded amplified microscopy is confined to the megahertz range. Replacing the ultra-short mode-locked pulse laser by a multi-wavelength source, based on waveband-division technique, a serial time stretch microscopic imaging system with a line scan rate of in the gigahertz range is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In this study, we present a surface scanning imaging system with a record line scan rate of 2GHz and 15 pixels. Using a rectangular spectrum and a sufficiently large wavelength spacing for waveband-division, the resulting 2D image is achieved with good quality. Such a superfast imaging system increases the single-shot temporal resolution towards the sub-nanosecond regime.
