Abstract:Phase shifts within microfiber resonators can be exploited to demonstrate compact and fast-responding devices. Two examples, a sensor and a bistable device, where the origins of the phase shift are fundamentally different, are investigated. In the sensor the phase change originates from the change of refractive index of the medium surrounding the microfiber ring. This is a linear mechanism which translates into a change of resonance wavelength. Calculations of a silica microfiber ring immersed in an aqueous solution and operating at a wavelength of 1550 nm show that with a fiber 550 nm in diameter the sensitivity approaches a maximal value of about 1137 nm/RIU. In contrast to the sensitivity, the detection limit is critically dependent on the Q factor of the microfiber resonator, and with state of the art microfiber resonators we predict a detection limit of the order of 10(-7) RIU. In the bistable device the phase shift is assumed to originate from the nonlinear optical Kerr effect. In contrast to the sensor, the nonlinearity affects the shapes of the resonances, a phenomenon responsible for bistability. Analytical formulae are derived to evaluate the main parameters at play. We investigate the suitability of several glass materials to realize a microfiber bistable device in air operating at a wavelength of 1550 nm. While the threshold for bistability is predicted to be of the order of tens of watts for silica, it drops to less than 30 mW for G2S2, an easily processed chalcogenide glass.

Abstract:Considering the requirement of monochromaticity and tunability for resonator used in on-chip optical interconnect source,we design and make a tunable silicon reflection cavity mirror based on microring resonator,using complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor technology and silicon material on insulating substrate.The performance of the reflection cavity is analyzed by the transfer-matrix method,and we find that the reflection cavity shows good properties in sharpness and extinction ratio.The experimental results show that the reflectivity of the reflection cavity can reach 90％ at the wavelength of 1549 nm,the quality factor is 3 × 104,and the free spectral range (FSR) is 9.6 nm.By applying the thermo-optic modulation to the microring resonator,the wavelength tunability in FSR can be realized within the power range of 0-40.5 mW.

Abstract:We present a Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST)-integrated ring resonator with the tuning enabled by an all-optical phase change of GST using a sequence of optical pulses. The tuning is non-volatile and repeatable, with no static power consumption due to the "self-holding" feature of the GST phase-change material. The 2 μm long GST can be partially crystallized by controlling the number of pulses, increasing the tuning freedom. The coupling between the ring resonator and the bus waveguide is based on an asymmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The coupling strength is wavelength-dependent, so that an optimal wavelength can be selected for the probe light to get more than 20 dB transmission contrast between the amorphous and crystalline GST states.

Abstract:Phase change material Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) has recently emerged as a highly promising candidate for photonic device applications owing to its high optical contrast, self-holding bi-stability, and fast material response. Here, we propose and analyze a 1×2 tunable switch using a GST embedded silicon microring resonator exploiting high optical contrast during GST phase change and a high thermo-optic coefficient of amorphous phase GST. Our device exhibits high extinction ratios of 25.57 dB and 18.75 dB at through and drop ports, respectively, with just a 1 µm long GST layer. The two states of the switch are realizable by electrically inducing phase change in GST. For post phase change from amorphous to crystalline and vice versa, the fall time down the 80% of phase transition temperature is ∼66ns and ∼45ns, respectively. The resonance wavelength shift per unit active length is 0.661 nm/µm, and the tuning efficiency is 1.16 nm/mW. The large wavelength tunability (4.63 nm) of the proposed switch makes it an attractive option for reconfigurable photonic integrated circuits.

Abstract:This paper reports a tunable photonic device that incorporates a thin layer of phase-change material, Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST), in a photonic crystal (PC) structure. The PC structure is based on a one-dimensional grating waveguide with a metal cladding. The metal-cladded PC structure supports a guided-mode resonance (GMR) that selectively absorbs light at a particular wavelength. Inserting the GST material into the gating waveguide makes it possible to control the GMR mode. Here, the GST-PC device was numerically designed and optimized to obtain significant tuning of the GMR mode around 1550 nm. The tuning phenomena were experimentally demonstrated by the heat-induced phase change between crystalline and amorphous phases of the GST thin film. A spectral shift of the resonant wavelength from 1440 to 1610 nm was achieved via the crystallization process. The phase tuning of GST exhibits good repeatability as demonstrated by switching between amorphous and crystalline phases of GST for multiple cycles. The GST-PC device represents a new approach for tuning optical resonances with potential applications including but not limited to integrated photonic circuits, optical communications, and high-performance optical filters.

Abstract:A Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST)-based microring resonator is designed and analyzed for optical switching-based applications. First, the optical properties of GST material having thicknesses of 130 to 230 nm on two commonly used substrates, i.e., silicon (Si) and silicon dioxide (SiO2), are investigated in detail. The phase-change property of GST plays an important role in tuning the resonant wavelength, absorption, and transmission loss in the ring resonator as its crystalline state has a higher refractive index (RI) compared with the amorphous state. Due to the phase-change property of the GST material, the effective RI of the waveguide core changes. A patch of GST is embedded on a ring resonator to optimize the response of light coupled in the ring and straight waveguide, that is tunable between its amorphous phase (a-GST) and crystalline (c-GST) phase. The difference in refractive indices between the two states of a phase-change material (PCM) renders it an optimal choice for the optical active devices used in light modulation and switching applications. The GST is employed as an active material in the proposed structure as it is significantly stable and results in reduced insertion loss (IL) compared with other PCMs. In the proposed design of the ring resonator, the finite-difference time-domain simulation demonstrates high extinction ratios of 16.05 and 20.50 dB at the THROUGH and DROP ports, respectively. Moreover, the low insertion losses (IL) of 0.33 dB at the THROUGH port in crystalline phase and 0.8 dB at the DROP port in amorphous phase, have been observed. The Q-factor of the ring resonator without a GST patch is 5.18×105, whereas with a GST patch, it is 5.13×105 and 1.28×105 in the amorphous and crystalline phases, respectively.

Abstract:This paper reports tunable integrated photonic devices in the visible and near-infrared (NIR) regions using a phase change material, Germanium Telluride (GeTe), within sub-wavelength layered optical cavity structures. GeTe exhibits two distinct index of refraction values at its amorphous and crystalline states in this spectral range. Utilizing this property, we demonstrate a multi-color filter working in visible range (400 nm-750 nm), achieving four colors through novel optical and thermal engineering of a thin film stack that includes two GeTe layers with only a single integrated joule heater element. Specifically, ultra-thin GeTe films were sandwiched between a bottom metallic mirror and a top high-index dielectric (titanium dioxide). It is shown that the crystallization temperature (Tx) of GeTe is dependent on the film thickness when less than ~20 nm. The refractive index of GeTe only changes significantly in the NIR region when it undergoes phase transitions when heated. To enhance the color contrast, a 250-nm thick silicon dioxide layer is placed under GeTe to create an optical cavity between GeTe and a bottom metal reflector. Using this optimized design, the tunable color filter shows four distinct colors using the integrated heater. In addition to a color filter, we demonstrate an electrically tunable multi-mode optical shutter in near infrared range of 1.1 m and 800 nm with more than 20 dB modulation depth. The low static power consumption of these devices achieved through reliable memory-base phase transitioning of GeTe makes them prime candidates for a number of portable consumer electronic applications.

Abstract:Low-power reconfigurable optical circuits are highly demanded to satisfy a variety of different applications. Conventional electro-optic and thermo-optic refractive index tuning methods in silicon photonics are not suitable for reconfiguration of optical circuits due to their high static power consumption and volatility. We propose and demonstrate a nonvolatile tuning method by utilizing the reversible phase change property of GST integrated on top of the silicon waveguide. The phase change is enabled by applying electrical pulses to the μm-sized GST active region in a sandwich structure. The experimental results show that the optical transmission of the silicon waveguide can be tuned by controlling the phase state of GST.

Abstract:A non-volatile flexible-grid wavelength-selective switch (NVFGWSS) based on subwavelength-grating-Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST)-assisted silicon microring resonators (MRRs) is proposed. By controlling the state of the subwavelength grating GST and the phase shifter, the transmission spectra of the designed subwavelength-grating-GST-assisted silicon MRRs are combined, and thus tunable bandwidths (BWs) are generated as required. A comprehensive analysis of the presented subwavelength-grating-GST-assisted silicon MRRs and the corresponding NVFGWSS is given. Numerical simulations reveal that, for the designed module comprising a subwavelength-grating-GST-assisted silicon MMR and an ellipse-based crossing waveguide, its maximum crosstalk (CT) and insertion loss are -18.08 and 0.50 dB, respectively. For the designed NVFGWSS, as the channel spacing is 0.8 nm, the in-band ripple and CT are <0.895 and -13.006 dB, respectively, and the 3-dB BW changes from 0.51 to 3.2 nm.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a tunable broadband photonic radio frequency (RF) phase shifter based on a silicon microring resonator. This scheme utilizes the thermal nonlinear effect of the silicon microring to change the electrical phase of the RF signal with a wide tuning range. A prototype of the phase shifter is experimentally demonstrated for a 40-GHz signal with a 0-4.6-rad tuning range.
Resonant Multilevel Optical Switching with Phase Change Material GST

Abstract:We demonstrate a multilevel optical memristive switch based on a silicon Fabry-Perot resonator. The resonator is constructed by a pair of waveguide Bragg gratings at the ends of a multimode interferometer (MMI) covered with sub-micrometer-size Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) thin film on top. The interaction between the optical field and GST is greatly enhanced due to the resonant effect. The GST phase transition is triggered by applying electrical pulses to the doped-silicon microheater. Light is transmitted when GST is amorphous while it is highly absorbed by the crystalline GST at the resonance wavelength, leading to a higher on-off extinction ratio (ER) compared to the non-resonant device. The resonant device achieves a maximum transmission contrast of 10.29 dB and a total of 38 distinct nonvolatile switching levels. Our work provides an effective solution to improving the multilevel switching performance of phase-change devices and paves the way for future nonvolatile silicon photonics devices.

Abstract:This paper reports a method to enable, for the first time, reconfigurable control of resonance splitting of one or multiple arbitrarily selected azimuthal orders in a microring resonator. This is accomplished by inscribing Bragg gratings in photosensitive Ge23Sb7S70 chalcogenide microring resonators via a novel cavity-enhanced photo-inscription process, in which injection of light at the targeted C-band resonance frequency induces a spatially-varying refractive index change. The so-formed Bragg grating precisely matches the selected resonance order without introducing optical losses. Long-term room temperature stability of the photo-inscribed Bragg gratings has been verified in darkness and during operation with reduced optical power levels. The Bragg gratings can be reconfigured by first erasure with flood illumination of visible light at 561 nm and subsequent re-inscription. We also report controlled splitting of multiple resonances by inscribing superimposed Bragg gratings.
A Non-Volatile Optical Filter Based on a Ge2Sb2Te5-assisted Microring with a Tunable Bandwidth and Extinction Ratio

Abstract:A novel non-volatile optical filter with a large bandwidth (BW) and extinction ratio (ER) tunability is first experimentally demonstrated by introducing an all-optical phase change of Ge 2 Sb 2 Te 5 (GST). The Si-GST hybrid device promises flexible multi-level regulation of essential filter parameters in an ultra-compact footprint of 30 μ m × 13 μ m. Ultra-low power consumption is realised on account of the saving of external static power that is required in other electric-optic or optic-optic-driven filters. The GST is loaded onto two triple-waveguide directional couplers located at the coupling regions of an add-drop microring resonator. By initiating the GST phase transition with pump optical pulses, the transmitted optical power to the cross port of the triple-waveguide coupler is adjustable, hence influencing the coupling efficiency states of the microring filter. Consequently, a tunable on-off ER from 0.7 dB to 18.2 dB and a tunable BW from 0.6 nm to 3.3 nm are experimentally obtained with the aid of optically manipulating the crystallization degree of GST. Our device potentially enables the realisation of high-density photonic integrated circuits, especially in dense wavelength division multiplexing networks.

Abstract:Dielectric metasurfaces have made great progress over the past decade to enhance light-matter interaction. Recently, dielectric nanohole structures have been employed for the creation of dielectric metasurfaces. However, the optical characteristics of most dielectric nanohole structures remain fixed once they are manufactured. This study investigates the optical properties of Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) film perforated with a periodic dual nanohole array. The GST dual nanohole array is capable of supporting multiple guided resonances and bound states in the continuum (BICs). By introducing asymmetry in the radius, BICs can be transformed into quasi-BICs with high-Q resonances. The wavelengths of guided resonances and quasi-BICs can be dynamically controlled through the phase transition of GST. Furthermore, modifying the gap allows for the achievement of active high-Q electromagnetically induced transparency, resulting from the interaction between one guided resonance and one quasi-BIC mode. The GST asymmetric nanohole array holds potential for applications in optical modulators, slow-light devices, and nonlinear optical devices.

Abstract:Due to their superior ability to control light, metasurfaces, ultrathin two-dimensional metamaterials composed of subwavelength nanostructures, have attracted great attention in recent years. Exploring geometric and material freedom in designing elementary nanostructures and their ambient environment of metasurfaces enables versatile optical devices, such as planar metalenses, holographic imaging and thermal radiators. With phase-change materials (PCMs) such as GeSbTe and VO2 integrated into metasurfaces, the optical functionalities of metasurfaces can be flexibly tuned by exploiting the phase transitions of PCMs induced by external stimuli, thereby opening up new directions and perspectives for dynamic tunable metamasurfaces. In this article, we review the recent progress of tunable metasurfaces based on PCMs, analyze their underlying working mechanisms and highlight their important applications. We conclude this review by bringing our perspectives on challenges and future directions in this field.
