Abstract:We report on the demonstration of an all-fiber femtosecond erbium doped fiber laser passively mode-locked using a 45º tilted fiber grating as an in-fiber polarizer in the laser cavity. The laser generates 600 fs pulses with output pulse energies ~1 nJ. Since the 45° tilted grating has a broad polarization response, the laser output has shown a tunabilty in wavelength from 1548 nm to 1562 nm by simply adjusting the polarization controllers in the cavity.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate an all-fiber single-polarization dual-wavelength Yb-doped fiber laser passively mode-locked with a 45°-tilted fiber grating for the first time. Stable dual-wavelength operation exhibits double-rectangular spectral profile centered at 1033 and 1053 nm, respectively. The 3 dB bandwidth of each rectangular optical spectrum is estimated as 10 nm. The separation of two fundamental repetition rates is 6 kHz. By employing the 45° TFG with the polarization-dependent loss of 33 dB, output pulses with 27 dB polarization extinction ratio are implemented in the experiment. The single pulse centered at 1053 nm is researched by using a filter at the output port of the laser, and the experimental results denote that the output ps pulses are highly chirped. The formation mechanism of dual-wavelength operation is investigated.

Abstract:Based on the nonlinear polarization rotation technique, we report on a stable passive 23rd harmonic mode-locked erbium-doped fiber soliton laser for the first time to the best of our knowledge. In this laser, 23 solitons are uniformly distributed in the cavity simultaneously, and all solitons have the same energy and duration. The increase of the coupler output enhances the dispersive radiation, and the longer cavity strengthens the interaction between solitons and dispersive waves. The two above factors play the key function to generate the 23rd harmonic mode-locked operation.

Abstract:In this study, we demonstrate a wavelength-tunable passively mode-locked fiber laser based on a 15 tilted fiber grating and a tapered fiber using the nonlinear polarization rotation technique. Further, stable mode-locked pulses with a central wavelength of 1568.8 nm and output power of 2.31 mW can be obtained when the input pump power is increased to 151 mW. Accordingly, the 3-dB spectral bandwidth and pulse width arc 1.5 nm and 1.3 ps, respectively. Subsequently, the central wavelength of the pulse can be continuously tuned from 1568.8 nm to 1560.21 nm using the tapered fiber as an adjustable attenuator to modulate the cavity loss. The demonstrated fiber laser can be used in several fields, including sensing, spectroscopy, and telecommunications.

Abstract:The application of a femtosecond laser direct inscribed 45° tilted fiber grating (TFG) in a net-normal-dispersion mode-locked Er-doped fiber laser, as an in-fiber polarizer, has been systematically studied. The 45° TFG with a grating length of ~ 12.6 mm and a grating period of ~ 2.2 μm has a polarization dependent loss of ~ 9.8 dB and supports various types of dissipative soliton (DS) outputs. The achieved single DS mode-locked pulse centered at 1570.55 nm has a 3 dB bandwidth of 15.64 nm and a pulse duration of ~ 4.68 ps. By simply employing a section of single-mode fiber, the output pulse duration can be dechirped to ~ 250 fs. The fundamental repetition rate is 25.47 MHz and the maximum pulse output power is 24.04 mW. By appropriately adjusting the intra-cavity polarization states and increasing the pump power, the bound-state DS, as well as a harmonic mode-locked DS, can be generated. The bound-state pulse is composed of two identical DS pulses with a temporal interval of ~ 26.27 ps. The second- and third-order harmonic mode-locked DS pulses with repetition rates of 50.93 MHz and 76.40 MHz are obtained for pump powers of 298 mW and 528 mW, respectively. Our results indicate that the feasibility and versatility of the femtosecond laser inscribed 45° TFG to realize nonlinear polarization evolution mode-locking in various operation regimes. Combined with the flexibility of the femtosecond laser direct inscription technique, such a 45° TFG paves a promising route for the development of robust, compact and high-energy ultrafast all-fiber lasers.

Abstract:We have experimentally demonstrated an all-fiber mode-locked laser by using a 45°-tilted fiber grating (45°-TFG) based in-fiber polarization beam splitter (PBS). Based on the nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR), the slanted refractive index modulation structure of the 45° TFG is able to tap the pluses out from the side face of the fiber. The central wavelength of the laser is 1559.9 nm and the period of pulse train is 156 ns, corresponding to the fundamental repetition rate of 6.79 MHz, the pulse energy of 0.26 nJ and the pulse duration of 1.06ps. Additionally, the laser shows a high degree of polarization (DOP) output of 99.8%. This mode-locked fiber laser with single polarization mode output is reliable during long-term operation and thus promising for many practical applications. As a proof of principle, the demonstrated laser can provide neat solution in designing compact mode-locked fiber laser.

Abstract:We demonstrate an L-band wavelength-tunable passively mode-locked fiber laser using a single long-period fiber grating (LPFG) as a narrow-band optical attenuator (NBOA). Through bending the LPFG, the central wavelength can be continuously tuned from 1582.02 to 1597.29 nm, while the output power only varies from 1.465 to 1.057 mW, approximately a rate of 22 µW/nm variation. This is the first time that LPFG is functioned as a NBOA in mode-locked fiber lasers, showing the great advantage of less impact on output power variation reduction. Besides, the total cavity length is 5.08 m, which is the shortest length yet reported in wavelength-tunable mode-locked fiber lasers. The wavelength tuning could also be realized at harmonic mode locking with tuning range of 14.69 nm under 5th harmonic.

Abstract:We report a tunable spatiotemporally mode-locked large-mode-area Er:ZBLAN fiber laser based on the nonlinear polarization rotation technique. A diffraction grating is introduced to select the operating wavelength. Under the spectral and spatial filtering effects provided by the grating and spatial coupling respectively, stable ps-level spatiotemporally mode-locked pulses around 2.8 µm with a repetition rate of 43.4 MHz are generated. Through a careful adjustment of the grating, a broad wavelength tuning range from 2747 to 2797 nm is realized. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first wavelength-tunable spatiotemporally mode-locked fiber laser in the mid-infrared region.

Abstract:The formation and evolution of bound dissipative pulses in the all-normal dispersion Yb-fiber laser based on a novel 45° tilted fiber grating (TFG) are first investigated both numerically and experimentally. Based on the nonlinear polarization rotation technique, the TFG and two polarization controllers (PCs) are exploited for stable self-started passive mode locking. Numerical results show that the formation of bound-state pulses in the all-normal dispersion region is the progress of soliton shaping through the dispersive waves and follows the soliton energy quantization effect. Theoretical and experimental results demonstrate that the formation mechanism of bound-state pulses can be attributed to the high pump strength and effective filter bandwidth. The obtained bound-state dissipative pulses with quasi-rectangular spectral profile have fixed pulse separation as a function of pump power.

Abstract:As a crucial component of nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) mode locking, optical fiber gratings offer advantages such as polarization modulation capability, stability, fiber compatibility, and preparation maturity, making them a vital technological foundation for achieving NPR mode locking. Here, a polarization-maintaining fiber helical long-period grating (PMF-HLPG) was designed and fabricated as a polarizer using the CO2-laser direct-write technique to realize the NPR effect. A homemade fiber Bragg grating (FBG) was also introduced into the laser system to enable a narrow-bandwidth lasing output and wavelength tunability. Based on the PMF-HLPG and FBG mentioned above, an all-fiber mode-locked laser with a spectra bandwidth of 0.15 nm was constructed to generate stable short pulses with a fundamental repetition rate of 12.7122 MHz and a pulse duration of 30.08 ps. In particular, its signal-to-noise ratio is up to 84.5 dB, showing the high stability of the laser. Further, the operating wavelength of the laser can be tuned from 1559.65 nm to 1560.29 nm via heating the FBG while maintaining its mode-locked state with stability. The results indicate that the PMF-HLPG could be used as a polarizer to meet the NPR mechanism for ultrashort pulse laser applications in optical communication, optical sensing, and biomedical imaging.

Abstract:We demonstrate a pump-controlled wavelength switchable Yb-doped fiber laser (YDFL) by nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) for the first time. The polarizer replaced by a 45° tilted fiber grating (45°-TFG) combines with a section of polarization maintaining fiber (PMF) to form a fiber-based birefringent filter. Stable dissipative soliton (DS) with center wavelength of 1068.39 nm is generated under the mode-locked threshold of 277 mW. The operating wavelength switching between 1046.51 nm and 1067.90 nm can be realized via increasing the pump power simply while keeping the polarization controllers (PCs) in a fixed state. The laser maintains stable mode-locking operation at each wavelength, which can be regarded as a type of multi-wavelength ultrafast light source with precise control and integration potential.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a 250-GHz high-repetition-rate mode-locked Er-doped fiber laser, which utilizes a silicon micro-ring resonator (SMRR). The SMRR acts as an optical comb filter to help achieve passive mode-locking through the dissipative four-wave-mixing effect induced by a piece of high nonlinear fiber. A short section of polarization-maintaining fiber is inserted in the cavity to induce birefringence filtering to significantly enhance the stability of the proposed laser through the combined effects of optical filtering and nonlinear spectral broadening. The laser can operate about 2 and 6 nm in the case of 1.48-ps and 875-fs output pulsewidth, with 3-dB bandwidth, respectively. The laser can remain mode locked, during our measurement time, without any cavity length or temperature feedback control.

Abstract:By combining nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) and semiconductor saturable absorber, we report a hybrid mode-locked Er:ZBLAN fiber oscillator at 2.8 µm. Stable 325-fs mode-locked pulses with an average power of 131 mW and a record signal-to-noise ratio of 79 dB at the fundamental frequency of 55.4 MHz are generated. Numerical simulations are carried out based on the modified coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations, and offer new insights into the underlying dynamics of pulse generation. The simulations indicate that compared with Er:ZBLAN fiber lasers mode-locked by NPR alone, the hybrid mode-locked Er:ZBLAN fiber oscillator allows a wider range and a lower threshold of the pump power while maintaining the ultrashort pulse width. Moreover, we numerically demonstrate that the hybrid mode-locked oscillator is less sensitive to the variation of polarization states, which will increase its robustness against environmental disturbance. This is the first time that the hybrid mode-locking technique is applied in the mid-infrared, opening up new opportunities for the development of stable ultrafast mid-infrared laser sources and practical applications outside the laboratory.

Abstract:We report an Er-doped fiber laser based on a hybrid mode-locked mechanism, which include a graded-index multimode fiber as a saturable absorber (SA) and nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR). By adopting two distinct mechanisms simultaneously, the laser can output shorter pulses with a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and low noise jitter. At a pump power of 110 mW, a mode-locked pulse train with a pulse duration of 1.8 ps and a repetition rate of 49.80 MHz is generated. Compared with the implementation of the NPR mode-locked mechanism alone, the implementation of the hybrid mode-locked mechanism increased the SNR of the laser from 44 dB to 70 dB. The standard deviation of the average power fluctuation is 1.53%. Besides, a stable harmonic mode-locked pulse train can be obtained and switched by merely adjusting the pump power.
