Abstract:Twin transmission in magnesium is studied from an atomic perspective by molecular dynamics simulations. It is found that twin transmission tends to occur at grain boundaries with low misorientation angles and the geometric compatibility factor is useful for explaining the twin variant selection. Furthermore, this work contributes to understanding the essence of twin transmission. A stress concentration near the grain boundary is observed when the incoming twin impinges on the boundary, inducing twin nucleation in the neighboring grain accomplished by a pure-shuffle mechanism.

Abstract:Magnesium alloys have received considerable research interest due to their lightweight, high specific strength and excellent castability. However, their plastic deformation is more complicated compared to cubic materials, primarily because their low-symmetry hexagonal close-packed (hcp) crystal structure. Deformation twinning is a crucial plastic deformation mechanism in magnesium, and twins can affect the evolution of microstructure by interacting with other lattice defects, thereby affecting the mechanical properties. This paper provides a review of the interactions between deformation twins and lattice defects, such as solute atoms, dislocations and twins, in magnesium and its alloys. This review starts with interactions between twin boundaries and substitutional solutes like yttrium, zinc, silver, as well as interstitial solutes like hydrogen and oxygen. This is followed by twin-dislocation interactions, which mainly involve those between {101 ̄2} tension or {101 ̄1} compression twins and 〈 a 〉, 〈 c 〉 or 〈 c + a 〉 type dislocations. The following section examines twin-twin interactions, which occur either among the six variants of the same {101 ̄2} or {101 ̄1} twin, or between different types of twins. The resulting structures, including twin-twin junctions or boundaries, tension-tension double twin, and compression-tension double twin, are discussed in detail. Lastly, this review highlights the remaining research issues concerning the interactions between twins and lattice defects in magnesium, and provides suggestions for future work in this area.

Abstract:Deformation twinning operates via twinning dislocations gliding on a specific twinning plane and along a specific twinning direction. As a consequence, a twin variant is supposed to retain its identity and unable to transform into other variants. However, we demonstrated that for the {101¯2} deformation twinning in magnesium, one twin variant can transform towards its conjugated variant in response to the external applied loading via the participation of prismatic-basal interface migration. We term such transformation as cross-transition of deformation twinning, which is expected to broaden the understanding of twinning mechanism.

Abstract:Abstract Twinning is an important deformation mode of hexagonal close‐packed metals. The crystallographic theory is based on the 150‐year‐old concept of simple shear. The habit plane of the twin is the shear plane; it is invariant. This article presents electron backscatter diffraction observations and crystallographic analysis of a millimetre‐size twin in a magnesium single crystal whose habit plane, unambiguously determined both in the parent crystal and in its twin, is not an invariant plane. This experimental evidence demonstrates that macroscopic deformation twinning can be achieved by a mechanism that is not a simple shear. This unconventional twin is often co‐formed with a new conventional twin that exhibits the lowest shear magnitude ever reported in metals. The existence of unconventional twinning introduces a shift of paradigm and calls for the development of new crystallographic theories of displacive transformations.

Abstract:Plastic deformation of metallic alloys usually takes place through slip, but occasionally involves twinning. In particular, twinning is important in hexagonal close packed materials where the easy slip systems are insufficient to accommodate arbitrary deformations. While deformation by slip mechanisms is reasonably well understood, less remains known about deformation by twinning. Indeed, the identification of relevant twinning modes remains an art. In this paper, we develop an universal framework combining fundamental kinematic definition of twins with large scale atomistic calculations to predict twinning modes of crystalline materials. We apply this framework to magnesium where there are two accepted twin modes -- tension and compression, but a number of anomalous observations. Surprisingly, our framework shows that there are a very large number of twinning modes that are important in the deformation process of magnesium consistent with the anomalous observations. Thus, in contrast to the traditional view where plastic deformation is kinematically partitioned between a few modes, our result argues that the physics of deformation in HCP materials is governed by an energetic and kinetic competition between numerous possibilities. Consequently, our findings suggest that the commonly used models of deformation physics need to be revisited in order to take into account a broader and richer variety of twin modes, and potentially points to new avenues of improving the mechanical properties.

Abstract:Multiple { 10 1 ¯ 2 } twin variants can be activated when the external tension loading is parallel to the normal direction of magnesium alloy plate. In the current work, we report that in addition to abundant primary { 10 1 ¯ 2 } twins, an atypical double twinning sequence, i.e. { 10 1 ¯ 2 } - { 10 1 ¯ 2 } double twin can also occur during uniaxial loading. The results of electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) observation indicate that these secondary twins prefer to be formed at the regions where two primary { 10 1 ¯ 2 } twins belonging to different twin variant pairs interact with each other. Meanwhile, abundant dislocations activated can also be found within the primary twin containing secondary { 10 1 ¯ 2 } twin. Accordingly, the possible formation mechanisms of such secondary { 10 1 ¯ 2 } twin are proposed and discussed based on the local strain accommodation evaluated by a combination of geometrical compatibility parameter (m’) and Schmid factor. The analysis results suggest that the formation of these secondary twins may be closely related to the minimization of local strain incompatibility at the twinning boundary caused by the basal dislocation within the primary twins.

Abstract:Due to lattice reorientation, grain segmentation, induced recrystallization, twins play a very important role in regulating texture, refining grains, improving mechanical properties and corrosion resistance, and has received more extensive attention. Numerous studies have shown that {10-12} tensile twins (TTWs) are easily activated in large quantities due to the lower critical resolve shear stresses (CRSS). Introduction of TTWs under uniaxial compression improved the strength, ductility, and formability of magnesium (Mg) alloys. Moreover, TTWs produced by multi-directional impact forging (MDIF) can optimize the microstructure by dividing grains and promoting recrystallization, resulting in significant improvement of mechanical properties. Although {10-11} compressive twins (CTWs) and {10-11}-{10-12} double twins (DTWs) can promote dynamic recrystallization (DRX), they are also favorable nucleation sites for cracks. In addition, the type and volume fraction of twins can affect the corrosion resistance, and they also play different roles in the corrosion process of different Mg alloys. Twins have shown great potential for improving structure and properties, but a comprehensive and critical discussion of twins in Mg alloys is still lacking. Therefore, based on previous studies, this article reviews the common types and variants of twins in Mg alloys, influencing factors, and their effects on the microstructure, mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. In addition, some interesting ideas are being proposed for further research.

Abstract:There is usually a tradeoff between the strength and the ductility in solute strengthening of metallic materials. However, magnesium is an exception. A {101¯1}-{101¯2} double twin (DT) provides a fracture-initiation site in Mg. Hence, an investigation on effects of segregations on facture at the DT will give a clue for understanding an exception of Mg to the tradeoff relation. In the present work, we investigated segregation behavior of Y and Al at the DT and interactions of a screw dislocation with segregated DTs by Monte Carlo (MC) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The MC simulations showed that the volumes of the atomic Voronoi polyhedron were changed by Y segregation, while the anisotropic factors of the atomic Voronoi polyhedron were changed by Al segregation. Also, the MD simulations indicated that Y segregation induced emission of twinning dislocations from the DT, while Al segregation suppressed the motion of the twinning dislocation. Thus, the boundary characteristics of the Y-segregated DT were different from those of the Al-segregated DT because the dominant factor is the mechanical effect for the Y-segregated DT and the chemical effect for the Al-segregated DT. However, the events caused in the segregated DTs can lead to limited pile-up of twinning dislocations at the triple junctions of boundaries, resulting in ductility enhancement by alloying.

Abstract:Magnesium (Mg) and its alloys hold great potential as an energy-saving structural material for automative, aerospace applications. However, the use of Mg alloys has been limited due to poor ductility and formability. Poor mechanical properties of Mg alloys origin from the insufficient number of slip systems, and deformation twinning plays an important role to accommodate plastic deformation. Here, we report a comprehensive experimental and modeling study to understand crystal size effect on the transformation in deformation modes in twin oriented Mg single crystals. The experiments reveal two regimes of size effects: (1) single twin propagation, where a typical "smaller the stronger" behavior was dominant in pillars {\le} 18 {\mu}m in diameter, and (2) twin-twin interaction, which results in anomalous strain hardening in pillars > 18 {\mu}m. Molecular dynamics simulations further indicate a transition from twinning to dislocation mediated plasticity for crystal sizes below a few hundred nanometers. Our results provide new understanding of the fundamental deformation modes of twin oriented Mg from nano-scale to bulk, and insights to design Mg alloys with superior mechanical properties through dimensional refinement. This subsequently can materialize into more utilization of Mg alloys as a structural material in technologically relevant applications.

Abstract:In a recent paper, Phys. Rev. E 67, 012201 (2003)] proposed a new interpretation of the collective dynamics in liquid metals and, in particular, of the relaxation mechanisms ruling density fluctuations propagation. At variance with both the predictions of the current literature and the results of recent inelastic x-ray scattering experiments, ST associate the quasielastic component of the S (Q,omega ) to the thermal relaxation, as it holds in ordinary adiabatic hydrodynamics valid for nonconductive liquids and in the Q-->0 limit. We show here that this interpretation leads to a nonphysical behavior of different thermodynamic and transport parameters.
