Abstract:A novel quenching-partitioning-tempering (Q-P-T) process was used to treat a medium carbon Fe-Mn-Si-Nb steel and considerable retained austenite was obtained in the Q-P-T martensitic steel. The results from X-ray diffraction line profile analysis (XLPA) indicate that the average dislocation density in martensite during uniform deformation is lower than before deformation, while the average dislocation density in retained austenite rapidly increases with increased strain. Based on the XLPA results, a new effect of retained austenite on ductility enhancement was proposed and named DARA (dislocation absorption by retained austenite) effect. The two conditions of DARA effect were further proposed and were verified in a lower bainitic steel. In general, the mechanism of ductility enhancement by retained austenite in high strength steels can be summarized as a new DARA effect combined with TRIP (transformation induced plasticity) effect and BCP (blocking crack propagation) effect proposed by other investigators near 50 years ago.
