Hydrogenolysis is among the more promising methods for depolymerizing lignin on an industrial scale. We performed reaction kinetics and mechanistic studies on lignin model compounds to understand lignin hydrogenolysis pathways, demonstrating that lignin end-units and internal units react significantly differently. Understanding the reaction mechanism and its sensitivity to variables helped us establish a continuous lignin upgrading process from various fractionated lignins. Near-theoretical yields of lignin platform monomers with > 80% overall product selectivity were obtained in a continuous hydrogenolysis process using a Pd/C catalyst.

Abstract:Lignin is a type of natural aromatic material with potential application prospects obtained from lignocellulosic biomass. Recently, the valorization of lignin has received increasing attention from both industry and academia. However, there is still a challenge in the efficient valorization of lignin due to the complexity and stability of the lignin structure. Recent work has been focused on the catalytic depolymerization of lignin to explore a promising and efficient way to valorize lignin into chemicals with high value and biofuels. Considerable research has focused on catalysts, solvents, and reaction parameters during the lignin depolymerization process, which significantly affects product distribution and productivity. Thus, in a catalytic depolymerization process, both catalysts and solvents have a significant influence on the depolymerization effect. This review article assesses the current status of the catalytic hydrogenolysis of lignin, mainly focusing on the solvents and catalysts during the reaction. First, various solvents applied in the lignin depolymerization reactions are extensively overviewed. Second, the recent progress of metal catalysts as well as their supports is summarized. Furthermore, a discussion of the challenges and prospects in this area is included.

Abstract:Petroleum, one of the fossil fuels, is still the main source for liquid fuel production. Lignin derived from renewable biomass has the potential to replace petroleum. The abundance of aromatic units in lignin makes it potential to produce high-value liquid fuel. This review offers a summary of the extensive study that has been devoted to the catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of lignin-derived phenolic compounds and the conversion of raw lignin into hydrocarbon liquid fuels. Based on the product classification (cyclohexanes and arenes), different catalytic systems, mainly including catalyst species, solvents and reaction conditions, are analyzed in detail. A model study of lignin-derived compounds (phenolic monomers and dimers) is usually carried out to elaborate on the HDO reaction mechanism. 100% yield of hydrocarbon liquid fuels can be achieved in most tests. With respect to the real lignin-derived bio-oil, however, hydrocarbon yields only reach 16.2%–62.8% due to the various components and high instability of the substrate. The technical barriers and challenges in this part are highlighted throughout. Moreover, the conversion of raw lignin is also comprehensively summarized, which actually combines the depolymerization of lignin and HDO of lignin-derived bio-oil in one pot, and its hydrocarbon yields are generally lower than those of lignin-derived bio-oil. In light of this, the important features of raw lignin that influence the production of hydrocarbon liquid fuels are adequately addressed. Overall, this paper focuses on the scientific and technological advances of hydrocarbon liquid fuel production from lignin, and the potential strategies to produce renewable fuels from lignin are discussed.

Abstract:Valuable fuels and chemicals production from biomass with high yields is always a big challenge in the energy utilization field. Herein, a two-step process for the catalytic conversion of lignin was proposed to form the fuels. In the first step, the depolymerization of lignin occurred efficiently via the hydrogenolysis reaction, resulting in 19.2% aromatic monomers under the catalysis of Pd/C and CrCl3. The catalysts exhibited a synergistic effect on the cleavage of β-O-4 bonds and the hydrogenation procedure, which prevented the condensation of intermediate products remarkably. Afterwards, the aromatic monomers were extracted out with octane solvent successfully (extraction degree 89.7%) and then used as a substrate in a second hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) step. Product mixture composed of 26.5% hydrocarbons (increased from 5.5%) and 49.7% alkylphenols (increased from 42.9%) were obtained after the HDO upgrading, which exhibited high potential to be used as fuels. This two-step approach is very promising to be a practical chemical engineering process for the fuel production from lignin.

Abstract:Lignin depolymerized phenolic compounds and biofuel precursors are ideal value-added products for lignin residues generated in biorefineries and modern paper pulp facilities. Hydrogenolysis of lignin is an efficient depolymerization method for the production of carbon-neutral sustainable fuels and platform chemicals. Lignin is underutilized due to its complex structure, mainly because of its complex interunit linkage crosslinks such as α-O-4, β-O-4, 4-O-5, and β-5. This paper centers on the hydrolysis reaction of three major ether bonds (α-O-4, β-O-4, 4-O-5) in lignin and lignin model compounds based on different catalysts for hydrogenative degradation and catalytic systems. The methods and strategies to inhibit the condensation reactions are summarized. In particular, density functional theory calculation of the reaction pathways are combined with isotopically labeled reaction pathways to deeply analyze the hydrogenation degradation mechanism of biomass and further improve the yield of monophenols during the hydrogenation degradation of lignin. Finally, a brief summary of the challenges and prospects of lignin hydrogenation degradation is proposed.

Abstract:Lignin is the most abundant biopolymer with aromatic building blocks and its valorization to sustainable chemicals and fuels has extremely great potential to reduce the excessive dependence on fossil resources, although such conversions remain challenging. The purpose of this Review is to present an insight into the catalytic conversion of lignin involving hydrogen, including reductive depolymerization and the hydrodeoxygenation of lignin-derived monomers to arenes, cycloalkanes and phenols, with a main focus on the catalyst systems and reaction mechanisms. The roles of hydrogenation sites (Ru, Pt, Pd, Rh) and acid sites (Nb, Ti, Mo), as well as their interaction in selective hydrodeoxygenation reactions are emphasized. Furthermore, some inspirational strategies for the production of other value-added chemicals are mentioned. Finally, some personal perspectives are provided to highlight the opportunities within this attractive field.

Abstract:Due to the depletion of fossil sources, it is imperative to develop a sustainable and carbon-neutral biorefinery for supporting the fuel and chemical supply in modern society. Lignin, the only renewable aromatic source, is still an underutilized component in lignocellulose. Very recently, it has been found that hydrogenolysis is a promising technology for lignin valorization. However, high-pressure H2 is necessary during lignin hydrogenolysis, resulting in safety problems. Furthermore, H2 is mainly produced from steam reforming of fossil sources in industry, which makes the conversion of renewable lignin unsustainable and costly. Plentiful aliphatic hydroxyl and methoxy groups exist in native lignin and offer a renewable alternative to H2, and can be hydrogen sources for the depolymerization and upgradation of lignin via the intramolecular catalytic transfer hydrogenation. The hydrogen source in situ generated from lignin is a type of green hydrogen, decreasing the carbon footprint. The purpose of this review is to provide a summary and perspective of lignin valorization via self-transfer hydrogenolysis, mainly focusing on a comprehensive understanding of the mechanism of catalytic self-transfer hydrogenolysis at the molecular level and developing highly effective catalytic systems. Moreover, some opportunities and challenges within this attractive field are given to discuss future research directions.

Abstract:Lignin as the most abundant source of aromatic chemicals in nature has attracted a great deal of attention in both academia and industry. Solvolysis is one of the promising methods to convert lignin to a number of petroleum-based aromatic chemicals. The process involving the depolymerization of the lignin macromolecule and repolymerization of fragments is complicated influenced by heating methods, reaction conditions, presence of a catalyst and solvent systems. Recently, numerous investigations attempted unveiling the inherent mechanism of this process in order to promote the production of valuable aromatics. Oxidative solvolysis of lignin can produce a number of the functionalized monomeric or oligomeric chemicals. A number of research groups should be greatly appreciated with regard to their contributions on the following two concerns: (1) the cracking mechanism of inter-unit linkages during the oxidative solvolysis of lignin; and (2) the development of novel catalysts for oxidative solvolysis of lignin and their performance. Investigations on lignin oxidative solvolysis are extensively overviewed in this work, concerning the above issues and the way-forward for lignin refinery.

Abstract:In the past five years, biomass‐derived biofuels and biochemicals were widely studied both in academia and industry as promising alternatives to petroleum. In this Review, the latest progress of the synthesis and fabrication of porous nanocatalysts that are used in catalytic transformations involving hydrogenolysis of lignin is reviewed in terms of their textural properties, catalytic activities, and stabilities. A particular emphasis is made with regard to the catalyst design for the hydrogenolysis of lignin and/or lignin model compounds. Furthermore, the effects of different supports on the lignin hydrogenolysis/hydrogenation are discussed in detail. Finally, the challenges and future opportunities of lignin hydrogenolysis over nanomaterial‐supported catalysts are also presented.

Abstract:Abstract Lignin is the main component of lignocellulose and the largest source of aromatic substances on the earth. Biofuel and bio‐chemicals derived from lignin can reduce the use of petroleum products. Current advances in lignin catalysis conversion have facilitated many of progress, but understanding the principles of catalyst design is critical to moving the field forward. In this review, the factors affecting the catalysts (including the type of active metal, metal particle size, acidity, pore size, the nature of the oxide supports, and the synergistic effect of the metals) are systematically reviewed based on the three most commonly used supports (carbon, oxides, and zeolites) in lignin hydrogenolysis. The catalytic performance (selectivity and yield of products) is evaluated, and the emerging catalytic mechanisms are introduced to better understand the catalyst design guidelines. Finally, based on the progress of existing studies, future directions for catalyst design in the field of lignin depolymerization are proposed.

Abstract:Replacing fossil resource with biomass is one of the promising approaches to reduce our carbon footprint. Lignin is one of the three major components of lignocellulosic biomass, accounting for 10-35 wt% of dried weight of the biomass. Hydrogenolytic depolymerization of lignin is attracting increasing attention because of its capacity of utilizing lignin in its uncondensed form and compatibility with the biomass fractionation processes. Lignin is a natural aromatic polymer composed of a variety of monolignols associated with a series of lignin linkage motifs. Hydrogenolysis cleaves various ether bonds in lignin and releases phenolic monomers which can be further upgraded into valuable products, i.e., drugs, terephthalic acid, phenol. This review provides an overview of the state-of-the-art advances of the reagent (lignin), products (hydrol lignin), mass balance, and mechanism of the lignin hydrogenolysis reaction. The chemical structure of lignin is reviewed associated with the free radical coupling of monolignols and the chemical reactions of lignin upon isolation processes. The reactions of lignin linkages upon hydrogenolysis are discussed. The components of hydrol lignin and the selectivity production of phenolic monomers are reviewed. Future challenges on hydrogenolysis of lignin are proposed. This article provides an overview of lignin hydrogenolysis reaction which shows light on the generation of optimized lignin ready for hydrogenolytic depolymerization.

Abstract:Nowadays and in the future, environment and energy are important issues that people have to consider. In order to achieve energy sustainability and minimize the increase in environmental pressure, researchers have begun to gradually develop new ways of energy access. Biomass resource is a sustainable and efficient mode of energy supply, which has little impact on the environment. Among them, lignin is a rich organic compound in natural plants and is a promising biomass source. According to different forms of energy, different lignin catalytic cracking reactions can be used. This paper systematically summarizes the research progress of lignin catalytic cracking under different energy effects and focuses on the opportunities of lignin catalytic cracking at this stage. The challenges and future research directions of lignin catalytic cracking and directional conversion composite catalytic system are summarized and discussed. On this basis, a critical perspective based on experiment is proposed. It provides a richer catalytic model for the efficient conversion of lignin into fuel and high-value chemicals in the future. In conclusion, this Review offers insights into future directions for catalytic cracking of lignin through synergistic utilization of multiple energy sources.

Abstract:Lignocellulosic biomass contains lignin, an aromatic and oxygenated substance and a potential method for lignin utilization is achieved through catalytic conversion into useful phenolic and aromatic monomers. The application of monometallic catalysts for lignin hydrogenolysis reaction remains one of the major reasons for the underutilization of lignin to produce valuable chemicals. Monometallic catalysts have many limitations such as limited catalytic sites for interacting with different lignin linkages, poor catalytic activity, low lignin conversion, and low product selectivity. It is due to lack of synergy with other metallic catalysts that can enhance the catalytic activity, stability, selectivity, and overall catalytic performance. To overcome these limitations, works on the application of bimetallic catalysts that can offer higher activity, selectivity, and stability have been initiated. In this review, cutting-edge insights into the catalytic hydrogenolysis of lignin, focusing on the production of phenolic and aromatic monomers using bimetallic catalysts within an internal hydrogen donor solvent are discussed. The contribution of this work lies in a critical discussion of recent reported findings, in-depth analyses of reaction mechanisms, optimal conditions, and emerging trends in lignin catalytic hydrogenolysis. The specific effects of catalytic active components on the reaction outcomes are also explored. Additionally, this review extends beyond current knowledge, offering forward-looking suggestions for utilizing lignin as a raw material in the production of valuable products across various industrial processes. This work not only consolidates existing knowledge but also introduces novel perspectives, paving the way for future advancements in lignin utilization and catalytic processes.

Abstract:Lignin is the only sustainable aromatic resource in nature, its utilization has attracted much attention worldwide. Oxidation is one of the promising strategies that can convert lignin to a range of value-added platform chemicals. Lignin oxidation is generally carried out in a liquid phase with employed catalytic systems and oxidants, and this process is largely influenced by operation conditions, catalyst types, presence of oxidant, and solvent species. The inter-unit linkages in lignin can be selectively oxidized with the assistance of designed catalytic systems, facilitating the formation of aromatics (phenolic aldehydes, ketones, and acids), benzoquinones, and aliphatic (di)carboxylic acids. This work aims to provide a comprehensive review on traditional and advanced lignin oxidation concerning various catalytic systems for different terminal products. Deficiency in current lignin oxidation is also mentioned which indicates the direction of further lignin oxidative valorization.

Abstract:Lignin is the unique, renewable and natural aromatic polymer. The efficient transformation of lignin into phenolic monomers and other high value-added chemicals such as hydrocarbons has long been regarded as an important comprehensive utilization approach. In this paper, we focused on the basic structure and the main treatment technologies of this aromatic material. The recent progress in the catalytic thermal depolymerization and hydrogenolysis were reviewed intensively. The catalytic mechanism for the degradation of lignin characteristic chemical bond β-O-4 was also given. Furthermore, the current technique challenges were summarized. Abstract:Lignin is an abundant renewable source of aromatics, but its complex heterogeneous structure poses challenges for its depolymerization and valorization. Heterogeneously catalyzed reductive depolymerization (HCRD) has emerged as a promising approach, utilizing heterogeneous catalysts to facilitate selective bond cleavage in lignin and hydrogen transfer to stabilize the products under mild conditions. This review provides a comprehensive understanding of the hydrogen transfer mechanisms in HCRD involving different hydrogen sources including molecular hydrogen, alcohols, formic acid, etc., and the native hydrogen donor groups in lignin. Recent advances in catalyst design for efficient lignin depolymerization are systematically discussed, focusing on precious metal‐based (Pt, Ru, Pd) and non‐precious metal‐based catalysts. Factors influencing catalyst performance, such as metal‐support interactions, promoters, and synergistic effects, are highlighted. The diverse array of high‐value aromatic chemicals obtained from HCRD is overviewed. Finally, the significance of HCRD in the context of lignin valorization and the development of integrated biorefineries is discussed, underscoring its potential to contribute to a sustainable bioeconomy.

Abstract:Lignin valorization has gained increasing attention over the past decade. Being the world’s largest source of renewable aromatics, its valorization could pave the way towards more profitable and more sustainable lignocellulose biorefineries. Many lignin valorization strategies focus on the disassembly of lignin into aromatic monomers, which can serve as platform molecules for the chemical industry. Within this framework, the oxidative conversion of lignin is of great interest because it enables the formation of highly functionalized, valuable compounds. This work provides a brief overview and critical discussion of lignin oxidation research. In the first part, oxidative conversion of lignin models and isolated lignin streams is reviewed.
