Abstract:Valuable fuels and chemicals production from biomass with high yields is always a big challenge in the energy utilization field. Herein, a two-step process for the catalytic conversion of lignin was proposed to form the fuels. In the first step, the depolymerization of lignin occurred efficiently via the hydrogenolysis reaction, resulting in 19.2% aromatic monomers under the catalysis of Pd/C and CrCl3. The catalysts exhibited a synergistic effect on the cleavage of β-O-4 bonds and the hydrogenation procedure, which prevented the condensation of intermediate products remarkably. Afterwards, the aromatic monomers were extracted out with octane solvent successfully (extraction degree 89.7%) and then used as a substrate in a second hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) step. Product mixture composed of 26.5% hydrocarbons (increased from 5.5%) and 49.7% alkylphenols (increased from 42.9%) were obtained after the HDO upgrading, which exhibited high potential to be used as fuels. This two-step approach is very promising to be a practical chemical engineering process for the fuel production from lignin.

Abstract:Petroleum, one of the fossil fuels, is still the main source for liquid fuel production. Lignin derived from renewable biomass has the potential to replace petroleum. The abundance of aromatic units in lignin makes it potential to produce high-value liquid fuel. This review offers a summary of the extensive study that has been devoted to the catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of lignin-derived phenolic compounds and the conversion of raw lignin into hydrocarbon liquid fuels. Based on the product classification (cyclohexanes and arenes), different catalytic systems, mainly including catalyst species, solvents and reaction conditions, are analyzed in detail. A model study of lignin-derived compounds (phenolic monomers and dimers) is usually carried out to elaborate on the HDO reaction mechanism. 100% yield of hydrocarbon liquid fuels can be achieved in most tests. With respect to the real lignin-derived bio-oil, however, hydrocarbon yields only reach 16.2%–62.8% due to the various components and high instability of the substrate. The technical barriers and challenges in this part are highlighted throughout. Moreover, the conversion of raw lignin is also comprehensively summarized, which actually combines the depolymerization of lignin and HDO of lignin-derived bio-oil in one pot, and its hydrocarbon yields are generally lower than those of lignin-derived bio-oil. In light of this, the important features of raw lignin that influence the production of hydrocarbon liquid fuels are adequately addressed. Overall, this paper focuses on the scientific and technological advances of hydrocarbon liquid fuel production from lignin, and the potential strategies to produce renewable fuels from lignin are discussed.

Abstract:Lignin, a major component of lignocellulosic biomass, is crucial to plant growth and development but is a major impediment to efficient biomass utilization in various processes. Valorizing lignin is increasingly realized as being essential. However, rapid condensation of lignin during acidic extraction leads to the formation of recalcitrant condensed units that, along with similar units and structural heterogeneity in native lignin, drastically limits product yield and selectivity. Catechyl lignin (C-lignin), which is essentially a benzodioxane homopolymer without condensed units, might represent an ideal lignin for valorization, as it circumvents these issues. We discovered that C-lignin is highly acid-resistant. Hydrogenolysis of C-lignin resulted in the cleavage of all benzodioxane structures to produce catechyl-type monomers in near-quantitative yield with a selectivity of 90% to a single monomer.

Abstract:Lignin depolymerized phenolic compounds and biofuel precursors are ideal value-added products for lignin residues generated in biorefineries and modern paper pulp facilities. Hydrogenolysis of lignin is an efficient depolymerization method for the production of carbon-neutral sustainable fuels and platform chemicals. Lignin is underutilized due to its complex structure, mainly because of its complex interunit linkage crosslinks such as α-O-4, β-O-4, 4-O-5, and β-5. This paper centers on the hydrolysis reaction of three major ether bonds (α-O-4, β-O-4, 4-O-5) in lignin and lignin model compounds based on different catalysts for hydrogenative degradation and catalytic systems. The methods and strategies to inhibit the condensation reactions are summarized. In particular, density functional theory calculation of the reaction pathways are combined with isotopically labeled reaction pathways to deeply analyze the hydrogenation degradation mechanism of biomass and further improve the yield of monophenols during the hydrogenation degradation of lignin. Finally, a brief summary of the challenges and prospects of lignin hydrogenation degradation is proposed.

Abstract:Hydropyrolysis has been demonstrated as a highly effective method in the production of fuels and high-value chemicals. However, limited research has been conducted on the reaction mechanism under hydrogen conditions, which necessitates further investigation. In order to examine the impact of hydrogen, experiments were conducted on a high-pressure pyrolyzer using 1-methoxy-2-phenethoxybenzenene with β-O-4 linkage. The results indicated that hydrogen promoted the depolymerization and reduced the formation of heavier compounds, leading to an increase in the production of the monomer phenols and aromatic compounds. Experiments were further conducted at different pressures. The results obtained from reactive molecular dynamics simulations exhibited the pyrolysis mechanisms. The cleavage of Cβ-O, Cph-O, and Cα-Cβ bonds, as well as demethylation and demethoxylation processes during hydropyrolysis were observed. The initial reaction commenced with Cβ-O bond cleavage, which was enhanced by the presence of hydrogen. Subsequent reactions were categorized into three types: decomposition or isomerization reaction, coupling with radical groups containing carbon, and combination with hydrogen molecules or hydrogen radicals. The direct reactions between the model compound molecules and hydrogen molecules or hydrogen radicals, as well as primary hydrogen abstraction reactions and hydrogen elimination reactions were explored. These simulations offer valuable insights into understanding the influence of hydrogen at the molecular level.

Abstract:Due to the depletion of fossil sources, it is imperative to develop a sustainable and carbon-neutral biorefinery for supporting the fuel and chemical supply in modern society. Lignin, the only renewable aromatic source, is still an underutilized component in lignocellulose. Very recently, it has been found that hydrogenolysis is a promising technology for lignin valorization. However, high-pressure H2 is necessary during lignin hydrogenolysis, resulting in safety problems. Furthermore, H2 is mainly produced from steam reforming of fossil sources in industry, which makes the conversion of renewable lignin unsustainable and costly. Plentiful aliphatic hydroxyl and methoxy groups exist in native lignin and offer a renewable alternative to H2, and can be hydrogen sources for the depolymerization and upgradation of lignin via the intramolecular catalytic transfer hydrogenation. The hydrogen source in situ generated from lignin is a type of green hydrogen, decreasing the carbon footprint. The purpose of this review is to provide a summary and perspective of lignin valorization via self-transfer hydrogenolysis, mainly focusing on a comprehensive understanding of the mechanism of catalytic self-transfer hydrogenolysis at the molecular level and developing highly effective catalytic systems. Moreover, some opportunities and challenges within this attractive field are given to discuss future research directions.

Abstract:Abstract Lignin is the main component of lignocellulose and the largest source of aromatic substances on the earth. Biofuel and bio‐chemicals derived from lignin can reduce the use of petroleum products. Current advances in lignin catalysis conversion have facilitated many of progress, but understanding the principles of catalyst design is critical to moving the field forward. In this review, the factors affecting the catalysts (including the type of active metal, metal particle size, acidity, pore size, the nature of the oxide supports, and the synergistic effect of the metals) are systematically reviewed based on the three most commonly used supports (carbon, oxides, and zeolites) in lignin hydrogenolysis. The catalytic performance (selectivity and yield of products) is evaluated, and the emerging catalytic mechanisms are introduced to better understand the catalyst design guidelines. Finally, based on the progress of existing studies, future directions for catalyst design in the field of lignin depolymerization are proposed.

Abstract:There has been a growing interest in advanced technology that transforms biomass-derived feedstock into renewable chemicals. Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of lignin into low-molecular-weight fragments (e.g., monomer, dimer, and oligomer), and subsequent catalyzed transformations, offer the promise of unlocking diverse aromatic products. In consideration of the diversity of lignin feedstocks, we shed light on the impact of variations in lignin structure on the conversion efficiency. This review aims to present the latest advances in the HTL of lignin and highlights key factors (reaction solvent, temperature, catalysts, and in particular lignin types) in reductive/oxidative processes by evaluating the yield of aromatic monomers and the selectivity of target products. The mechanistic studies based on lignin model compounds were summarized to provide deep understanding of the reaction pathways to prove the crucial roles of lignin structures and high-performance catalysts in controlling catalytic activity. Abstract:Lignin is a type of natural aromatic material with potential application prospects obtained from lignocellulosic biomass. Recently, the valorization of lignin has received increasing attention from both industry and academia. However, there is still a challenge in the efficient valorization of lignin due to the complexity and stability of the lignin structure. Recent work has been focused on the catalytic depolymerization of lignin to explore a promising and efficient way to valorize lignin into chemicals with high value and biofuels. Considerable research has focused on catalysts, solvents, and reaction parameters during the lignin depolymerization process, which significantly affects product distribution and productivity. Thus, in a catalytic depolymerization process, both catalysts and solvents have a significant influence on the depolymerization effect. This review article assesses the current status of the catalytic hydrogenolysis of lignin, mainly focusing on the solvents and catalysts during the reaction. First, various solvents applied in the lignin depolymerization reactions are extensively overviewed. Second, the recent progress of metal catalysts as well as their supports is summarized. Furthermore, a discussion of the challenges and prospects in this area is included.

Abstract:Deep insight of reaction mechanism in lignin model compounds is helpful to achieve the directed depolymerization of lignin or biomass to chemicals or fuels. In this study, the density functional theory (DFT) calculation was employed to investigate the cleavage mechanism of the C–O bonds in lignin dimers. Additionally, the intrinsic chemical reactivity of molecular in term of the Fukui function was applied to predict the most probable sites which react with hydrogen free radicals (H·). It was found that the O atoms in lignin dimers are the most reaction site involving H· because of the large f (0). By this method, the most rational path from a series of reaction paths was screen out. Apart from the Fukui function, the average local ionization energy (ALIE) was analyzed to prove the reliability of Fukui function. The kinetic analysis of the reaction path was performed to further understand the impact of temperature on the reaction rate constant (KTST). It is observed that benzyl phenyl ether (BPE) with higher KTST could be easily cleaved because of the relatively low energy barrier.

Abstract:The utilization of biomass in the production of renewable bioenergy and biomaterials has been a popular topic since the past decades as they are rich in carbohydrates. Most biomasses, such as wood, monocotyledons, and agriculture residues, need to be pretreated before the conversion of carbohydrates in order to break down the recalcitrant cell wall structure and increase the fiber accessibility. To date, a variety of pretreatment methods have been developed that vary from physical to chemical and biological methods. Pretreatment processes affect the cell wall physical structure as well as the chemical structure of the cell wall constituents. Comparing to the studies of the cellulose and hemicelluloses structural changes during pretreatment, such studies on lignin are relatively limited. On the other hand, in order to utilize the part of lignin from biorefinery processes, the understanding of the lignin structural changes during the refining process becomes important. In this study, typical pretreatment methods such as hydrothermal pretreatment, alkaline pretreatment, biodegradation, and oxidative pretreatment are introduced and their corresponding impacts on the lignin structures are reviewed.
Highly Efficient Lignin Depolymerization and Enhanced Bio-Oil Upgrading Via In-Situ Hydrogenation: Impact of Lignin Structure

Abstract:The inherent structural rigidity of lignin poses a significant challenge to its direct hydrogenation to produce aromatic compounds, requiring harsh reaction conditions. In this study, microwave-assisted hydrothermal liquefication was employed to rapidly generate raw bio-oil under mild conditions, coupled with an in-situ hydrogenation strategy to upgrade its quality. A series of lignin substrates were characterized to establish the relationship between lignin characteristics and aromatic products. Grass lignin can produce low molecular weight bio-oil in high yields (50.4-60.7 %) within 30 min at 180 degrees C, which is attributed to the abundance of cleavable beta-O-4 linkages in its uniform structure. In contrast, softwood lignin with abundant guaiacyl (G) units possessed a robust thermal stability, resulting in a low monomer yield, but a high selectivity to G-type products (97 %). The raw bio-oil was further upgraded through in-situ hydrogenation with Pd catalysts. Low reaction temperatures (60-100 degrees C) favored the hydrogenation of aromatic aldehydes and ketones to their alcohol products, while high temperatures (100-220 degrees C) promoted the deep hydrogenation of aromatic side chains to alkyl products. Besides, an upgraded bio-oil with a higher heating value (29.8 MJ/kg) was obtained. Furthermore, the hydrogenation mechanism was investigated through the kinetics of simulated bio-oils. The activation energy follows the order: dimer beta-O-4 linkage < monomer aldehyde group < ketone group < CC linkage, which is consistent with the hydrogenation kinetics observed in real lignin bio-oil. Overall, this study highlights the impact of lignin characteristics on subsequent conversion and also enhances our understanding of the complex depolymerization/hydrogenation mechanisms during lignin upgrading.

Abstract:Lignin is an abundant renewable source of aromatics, but its complex heterogeneous structure poses challenges for its depolymerization and valorization. Heterogeneously catalyzed reductive depolymerization (HCRD) has emerged as a promising approach, utilizing heterogeneous catalysts to facilitate selective bond cleavage in lignin and hydrogen transfer to stabilize the products under mild conditions. This review provides a comprehensive understanding of the hydrogen transfer mechanisms in HCRD involving different hydrogen sources including molecular hydrogen, alcohols, formic acid, etc., and the native hydrogen donor groups in lignin. Recent advances in catalyst design for efficient lignin depolymerization are systematically discussed, focusing on precious metal‐based (Pt, Ru, Pd) and non‐precious metal‐based catalysts. Factors influencing catalyst performance, such as metal‐support interactions, promoters, and synergistic effects, are highlighted. The diverse array of high‐value aromatic chemicals obtained from HCRD is overviewed. Finally, the significance of HCRD in the context of lignin valorization and the development of integrated biorefineries is discussed, underscoring its potential to contribute to a sustainable bioeconomy.

Abstract:Developing renewable biomass resources is an urgent task to reduce climate change. Lignin, the only renewable aromatic feedstock present in nature, has attracted considerable global interest in its transformation and utilization. However, the complexity of lignin’s structure, uncertain linkages, stability of side chain connection, and inevitable recondensation of reaction fragments make lignin depolymerization into biofuels or platform chemicals a daunting challenge. Therefore, understanding the structural characteristics and reactivity relationships is crucial for achieving high-value utilization of lignin. In this review, we summarize the key achievements in the field of lignin conversion with a focus on the effects of the β-O-4 content, S/G ratio, lignin sources, and an “ideal” lignin—catechyl lignin. We discuss how these characteristics influence the formation of lignin monomer products and provide an outlook on the future direction of lignin depolymerization.

Abstract:Lignin is a cross linked aromatic polymer and it is abundant in nature. It is regarded as a potential substitute of fossil resource and industrial raw materials due to its highly aromatic character via lignin valorization and commercialization. Lignin depolymerization is an effective solution to achieve lignin valorization by yielding value-added fine chemicals (such as monophenols and biofuels). Due to their stable structure, complex spatial configurations and electronic effect, lignin depolymerization often suffered from serious condensation and complexity of products. Commonly, this results in low yield and selectivity that limit large scale of lignin depolymerization. A challenge exists, however, on how to develop high selective catalytic strategies/reactors, which would enable efficient and selective catalysis by controlling the bond breaking mode and inhibiting the condensation of active intermedia. In this review, we begin by introducing the potential of lignin as an emerging star for lignin commercialization. And then catalytic depolymerization strategy (e.g., catalytic pyrolysis, catalytic hydrolysis, catalytic oxidation, catalytic reduction and two-step redox) and also their selective bond breaking mechanism are reviewed. Particularly, we report latest vision about lignin highly efficient valorization targeting at reaching market, by controlling of reaction condensation and using continuous-flow reactor depolymerization. Most importantly, the limitations and potential solutions for lignin depolymerization are proposed to present opportunities for future industrialization applications.
Lignin Hydrogenolysis: Phenolic Monomers from Lignin and Associated Phenolates across Plant Clades

Abstract:The chemical complexity of lignin remains a major challenge for lignin valorization into commodity and fine chemicals. A knowledge of the lignin features that favor its valorization and which plants produce such lignins can be used in plant selection or to engineer them to produce lignins that are more ideally suited for conversion. Sixteen biomass samples were compositionally surveyed by NMR and analytical degradative methods, and the yields of phenolic monomers following hydrogenolytic depolymerization were assessed to elucidate the key determinants controlling the depolymerization. Hardwoods, including those incorporating monolignol <i>p</i>-hydroxybenzoates into their syringyl/guaiacyl copolymeric lignins, produced high monomer yields by hydrogenolysis, whereas grasses incorporating monolignol <i>p</i>-coumarates and ferulates gave lower yields, on a lignin basis. Softwoods, with their more condensed guaiacyl lignins, gave the lowest yields. Lignins with a high syringyl unit content released elevated monomer levels, with a high-syringyl polar transgenic being particularly striking. Herein, we distinguish phenolic monomers resulting from the core lignin vs those from pendent phenolate esters associated with the biomass cell wall, acylating either polysaccharides or lignins. The basis for these observations is rationalized as a means to select or engineer biomass for optimal conversion to worthy phenolic monomers.

Abstract:Lignocellulosic biomass contains lignin, an aromatic and oxygenated substance and a potential method for lignin utilization is achieved through catalytic conversion into useful phenolic and aromatic monomers. The application of monometallic catalysts for lignin hydrogenolysis reaction remains one of the major reasons for the underutilization of lignin to produce valuable chemicals. Monometallic catalysts have many limitations such as limited catalytic sites for interacting with different lignin linkages, poor catalytic activity, low lignin conversion, and low product selectivity. It is due to lack of synergy with other metallic catalysts that can enhance the catalytic activity, stability, selectivity, and overall catalytic performance. To overcome these limitations, works on the application of bimetallic catalysts that can offer higher activity, selectivity, and stability have been initiated. In this review, cutting-edge insights into the catalytic hydrogenolysis of lignin, focusing on the production of phenolic and aromatic monomers using bimetallic catalysts within an internal hydrogen donor solvent are discussed. The contribution of this work lies in a critical discussion of recent reported findings, in-depth analyses of reaction mechanisms, optimal conditions, and emerging trends in lignin catalytic hydrogenolysis. The specific effects of catalytic active components on the reaction outcomes are also explored. Additionally, this review extends beyond current knowledge, offering forward-looking suggestions for utilizing lignin as a raw material in the production of valuable products across various industrial processes. This work not only consolidates existing knowledge but also introduces novel perspectives, paving the way for future advancements in lignin utilization and catalytic processes.

Abstract:Extension of neuroepithelial neoplasms outside the neuraxis, though uncommon, is well known and usually follows surgical intervention. More unusual is the brain tumor that appears beyond the bounds of the central nervous system prior to operative manipulation. Two infants presented with soft tissue masses in the neck that proved to be medulloblastomas. Autopsy examination in both infants showed primary medulloblastoma of the cerebellar vermis with extensive spread through the subarachnoid spaces. The neck masses may have been direct extension from the central nervous system tumors, though this was not proved in either case.
