Abstract:Recently, two stronger versions of dynamical properties have been introduced and investigated: strong topological transitivity, which is a stronger version of the topological transitivity property, and hypermixing, which is a stronger version of the mixing property. We continue the investigation of these notions with two main results. First, we show there are dynamical systems which are strongly topologically transitive but not weakly mixing. We then show that on $\ell^p$ or $c_0$, there is a weighted backward shift which is strongly topologically transitive but not mixing.

Abstract:In ergodic theory, given sufficient conditions on the system, every weak mixing $\mathbb{N}$-action is strong mixing along a density one subset of $\mathbb{N}$. We ask if a similar statement holds in topological dynamics with density one replaced with thickness. We show that given sufficient initial conditions, a group action in topological dynamics is strong mixing on a thick subset of the group if and only if the system is $k$-transitive for all $k$, and conclude that an analogue of this statement from ergodic theory holds in topological dynamics when dealing with abelian groups.

Abstract:Let (X, G) be a G-action topological system, where G is a countable infinite discrete amenable group and X a compact metric space. We prove a variational principle for topological entropy of saturated sets for systems which have the specification property and uniform separation property. We show that certain algebraic actions satisfy these two conditions. We give an application in multifractal analysis.
A Class of Homeomorphisms on Homogeneous Spaces of a Group Action

Abstract:We develop a class of homeomorphisms on a compact homogeneous space of a transitive group action and show how the class sheds new light on a decomposition problem. We further use this class to show that every such homogeneous space in a locally convex topological vector space which is also convex must necessarily be trivial, ie. a singleton set. Additionally, this class of homeomorphisms allows us to relate the induced group action on the space of continuous functions to the action on the homogeneous space.

Abstract:Let S be a transformation semigroup acting on a set O. The action of S on O can be naturally extended to be an action on all subsets of O. We say that S is l-homogeneous provided it can send A to B for any two (not necessarily distinct) l-subsets A and B of O. On the condition that k = l < k + l = |O|, we show that every l-homogeneous transformation semigroup acting on O must be k-homogeneous. We report other variants of this result for Boolean semirings and affine/projective geometries. In general, any semigroup action on a poset gives rise to an automaton and we associate some sequences of integers with the phase space of this automaton. When this poset is a geometric lattice, we propose to investigate various possible regularity properties of these sequences, especially the so-called top-heavy property. In the course of this study, we are led to a conjecture about the injectivity of the incidence operator of a geometric lattice, generalizing a conjecture of Kung.

Abstract:In Blanchard et al (Topological complexity. Ergod. Th. & Dynam. Sys. 20 (2000), 641-662), the authors introduced the notion of scattering and a weaker notion of 2-scattering. It is an open question whether the two notions are equivalent. The question is answered affirmatively in this paper. Using the complexity function of an open cover along some sequences of natural numbers, we characterize mild mixing, strong scattering and scattering. We show that mildly mixing (respectively strongly mixing) systems are disjoint from minimal uniformly rigid (respectively minimal rigid) systems.Moreover, assuming minimality we show that a dynamical system is full-scattering (respectively mildly mixing or weakly mixing) if and only if it is strongly mixing (respectively IP*-transitive or D-transitive), where D is the collection of subsets of Z(+) with the lower Banach density 1.
On the space of subgroups of Baumslag-Solitar groups II: High transitivity

Abstract:We continue our study of the perfect kernel of the space of transitive actions of Baumslag-Solitar groups by investigating high transitivity. We show that actions of finite phenotype are never highly transitive, except when the phenotype is $1$, in which case high transitivity is actually generic. In infinite phenotype, high transitivity is generic, except when |m|=|n|$ where it is empty. We also reinforce the dynamical properties of the action by conjugation on the perfect kernel that we had established in our first paper, replacing topological transitivity by high topological transitivity.

Abstract:Let [Formula: see text] be a compact metric space and [Formula: see text] a countable infinite discrete amenable group acting on [Formula: see text]. Like in the [Formula: see text]-action cases we define the notion of local entropy and by it we bound the difference between metric entropy and that of a partition, and bound the difference between topological entropy and that of a separated set, which generalize Theorems 1(1) and 1(2) in [Newhouse, 1989] from [Formula: see text]-actions to amenable group actions. We further prove that the entropy function [Formula: see text] is upper semi-continuous on [Formula: see text] for an asymptotic entropy expansive amenable group action.

Abstract:We give a new categorical approach to the Halmos-von Neumann theorem for actions of general topological groups. As a first step, we establish that the categories of topological and measure-preserving irreducible systems with discrete spectrum are equivalent. This allows to prove the Halmos-von Neumann theorem in the framework of topological dynamics. We then use the Pontryagin and Tannaka-Krein duality theories to obtain classification results for topological and then measure-preserving systems with discrete spectrum. As a byproduct, we obtain a complete isomorphism invariant for compactifications of a fixed topological group.

Abstract:A global action is the algebraic analogue of a topological manifold. This construction was introduced in first place by A. Bak as a combinatorial approach to K-Theory and the concept was later generalized by Bak, Brown, Minian and Porter to the notion of groupoid atlas. In this paper we define and investigate homotopy invariants of global actions and groupoid atlases, such as the strong fundamental groupoid, the weak and strong nerves, classifying spaces and homology groups. We relate all these new invariants to classical constructions in topological spaces, simplicial complexes and simplicial sets. This way we obtain new combinatorial formulations of classical and non classical results in terms of groupoid atlases.

Topology and its Applications

Abstract:We study local versions of transitivity and weak mixing expressed in terms of properties of sets. In particular, the structure of the class of these sets in the hyperspace 2X is investigated. We introduce the definition of transitive sets of higher degrees and prove that any weakly mixing set of order 2 has a stronger form of transitivity. We also discuss weakly mixing sets and chaotic sets over fibers of a factor map with relation to entropy of considered transformations.

Abstract:In this paper we survey some recent results on actions of finite groups on topological manifolds. Given an action of a finite group $G$ on a manifold $X$, these results provide information on the restriction of the action to a subgroup of $G$ of index bounded above by a number depending only on $X$. Some of these results refer to the algebraic structure of the group, such as being abelian, or nilpotent, or admitting a generating subset of controlled size; other results refer to the geometry of the action, e.g. to the existence of fixed points, to the collection of stabilizer subgroups, or to the action on cohomology.

Abstract:In this paper we study chaotic behavior of actions of a countable discrete group acting on a compact metric space by self-homeomorphisms.For actions of a countable discrete group G, we introduce local weak mixing and Li-Yorke chaos; and prove that if G is infinite then local weak mixing implies Li-Yorke chaos, and if G is an infinite countable discrete amenable group then positive topological entropy implies local weak mixing. Moreover, when considering a shift of finite type for actions of an infinite countable amenable group G, if the action has positive topological entropy then its homoclinic equivalence relation is non-trivial, and if additionally G is residually finite and the action contains a dense set of periodic points then the converse holds true.

Abstract:We define and study notions of amenability and skew-amenability of continuous actions of topological groups on compact topological spaces. Our main motivation is the question under what conditions amenability of a topological group passes to a closed subgroup. Other applications include the understanding of the universal minimal flow of various non-amenable groups.

Abstract:Abstract Packing topological entropy is a dynamical analogy of the packing dimension, which can be viewed as a counterpart of Bowen topological entropy. In the present paper we give a systematic study of the packing topological entropy for a continuous G -action dynamical system $(X,G)$ , where X is a compact metric space and G is a countable infinite discrete amenable group. We first prove a variational principle for amenable packing topological entropy: for any Borel subset Z of X , the packing topological entropy of Z equals the supremum of upper local entropy over all Borel probability measures for which the subset Z has full measure. Then we obtain an entropy inequality concerning amenable packing entropy. Finally, we show that the packing topological entropy of the set of generic points for any invariant Borel probability measure $\mu $ coincides with the metric entropy if either $\mu $ is ergodic or the system satisfies a kind of specification property.

Abstract:In the first part of this work we have established an efficient method to obtain a topological classification of locally discrete, finitely generated, virtually free subgroups of real-analytic circle diffeomorphisms. In this second part we describe several consequences, among which the solution (within this setting) to an old conjecture by P. R. Dippolito [Ann. Math. 107 (1978), 403-453] that actions with invariant Cantor sets must be semi-conjugate to piecewise linear actions. In addition, we exhibit examples of locally discrete, minimal actions which are not of Fuchsian type.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a countable discrete group. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a transitive $G$-system to be disjoint with all minimal $G$-systems, which implies that if a transitive $G$-system is disjoint with all minimal $G$-systems, then it is $\infty$-transitive, i.e. $(X^k,G)$ is transitive for all $k\in\N$, and has dense minimal points. In addition, we show that any $\infty$-transitive $G$-system with dense distal points are disjoint with all minimal $G$-systems.
