Abstract:For C^1 transitive Anosov diffeomorphisms, we consider the sets of irregular points without physical-like behaviour and regular points without physical-like behaviour respectively and show that they all carry full topological entropy. Abstract:Motivated by Furstenberg's Theorem on sets in the circle invariant under multiplication by a non-lacunary semigroup, we define a general class of dynamical systems possessing similar topological dynamical properties. We call such systems chaotic almost minimal, reflecting that these systems are chaotic, but in some sense are close to minimal. We study properties of the acting group needed to admit such an action, and show the existence of a chaotic almost minimal $\mathbb{Z}$-action. We show there exists chaotic almost minimal $\mathbb{Z}^{d}$-actions which support multiple distinct nonatomic ergodic probability measures.

Entropy of group actions beyond uniform lattices

Abstract:Entropy of measure preserving or continuous actions of amenable discrete groups allows for various equivalent approaches. Among them are the ones given by the techniques developed by Ollagnier and Pinchon on the one hand and the Ornstein-Weiss lemma on the other. We extend these two approaches to the context of actions of amenable topological groups. In contrast to the discrete setting, our results reveal a remarkable difference between the two concepts of entropy in the realm of non-discrete groups: while the first quantity collapses to 0 in the non-discrete case, the second yields a well-behaved invariant for amenable unimodular groups. Concerning the latter, we moreover study the corresponding notion of topological pressure, prove a Goodwyn-type theorem, and establish the equivalence with the uniform lattice approach (for locally compact groups admitting a uniform lattice). Our study elaborates on a version of the Ornstein-Weiss lemma due to Gromov.

Positive entropy actions by higher-rank lattices

Abstract:We study smooth actions by lattices $\Gamma$ in higher-rank simple Lie groups $G$ assuming one element of the action acts with positive topological entropy and prove a number of new rigidity results. For lattices $\Gamma$ in $\mathrm{SL}(n,\mathbb{R})$ acting on $n$-manifolds, if the action has positive topological entropy we show the lattice must be commensurable with $\mathrm{SL}(n,\mathbb{Z})$. Moreover, such actions admit an absolutely continuous probability measure with positive metric entropy; adapting arguments by Katok and Rodriguez Hertz, we show such actions are measurably conjugate to affine actions on (infra)tori. In our main technical arguments, we study families of probability measures invariant under sub-actions of the induced $G$-action on an associated fiber bundle. To control entropy properties of such measures, in the appendix we establish certain upper semicontinuity of entropy under weak-$*$ convergence, adapting classical results of Yomdin and Newhouse.

Abstract:Let [Formula: see text] be a compact metric space and [Formula: see text] a countable infinite discrete amenable group acting on [Formula: see text]. Like in the [Formula: see text]-action cases we define the notion of local entropy and by it we bound the difference between metric entropy and that of a partition, and bound the difference between topological entropy and that of a separated set, which generalize Theorems 1(1) and 1(2) in [Newhouse, 1989] from [Formula: see text]-actions to amenable group actions. We further prove that the entropy function [Formula: see text] is upper semi-continuous on [Formula: see text] for an asymptotic entropy expansive amenable group action.

Abstract:In this paper we study chaotic behavior of actions of a countable discrete group acting on a compact metric space by self-homeomorphisms.For actions of a countable discrete group G, we introduce local weak mixing and Li-Yorke chaos; and prove that if G is infinite then local weak mixing implies Li-Yorke chaos, and if G is an infinite countable discrete amenable group then positive topological entropy implies local weak mixing. Moreover, when considering a shift of finite type for actions of an infinite countable amenable group G, if the action has positive topological entropy then its homoclinic equivalence relation is non-trivial, and if additionally G is residually finite and the action contains a dense set of periodic points then the converse holds true.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce the definition of entropy for a partial $\mathbb{Z}$-action. We show that the definition of partial entropy is an extension of the definition of topological entropy for a $\mathbb Z$-action. We also prove that the partial topological entropy is concentrated on the non-wandering set.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a countable discrete group. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a transitive $G$-system to be disjoint with all minimal $G$-systems, which implies that if a transitive $G$-system is disjoint with all minimal $G$-systems, then it is $\infty$-transitive, i.e. $(X^k,G)$ is transitive for all $k\in\N$, and has dense minimal points. In addition, we show that any $\infty$-transitive $G$-system with dense distal points are disjoint with all minimal $G$-systems.

Abstract:We present a new argument in the study of positive entropy measures for higher rank diagonalisable actions. The argument relies on a quantitative form of recurrence along unipotent directions (that are not known to preserve the measure). Using this argument we prove a classification of positive entropy measures for any higher rank action on an irreducible arithmetic quotient of a form of $SL_2$. We also provide an Adelic version of this classification result where no entropy assumption is needed. These results can also be used to prove new results regarding Diophantine approximations of integer multiples of an arbitrary element $\alpha\in\mathbb{R}$.

Abstract:Let $G$ be an infinite discrete countable group and $(X,G)$ be a minimal $G$-system. In this paper, we prove the supremum of topological sequence entropy of $(X,G)$ is not less than $\log(\sum_{\mu\in\mathcal{M}^e(X,G)}e^{h_\mu^*(X,G)})$. If additionally $G$ is abelian then there is a constant $K\in\mathbb{N}\cup\{\infty\}$ with $\log K\le h_{top}^*(X,G)$ such that $\nu(\{y\in H:|\pi^{-1}(y)|=K\})=1$ where $(H,G)$ is the maximal equicontinuous factor of $(X,G)$, $\pi:(X,G)\to (H,G)$ is the factor map and $\nu$ is the Haar measure of $H$.

Abstract:In this paper, entropies, including measure-theoretic entropy and topological entropy, are considered for random $\mathbb{Z}^k$-actions which are generated by random compositions of the generators of $\mathbb{Z}^k$-actions. Applying Pesin's theory for commutative diffeomorphisms we obtain a measure-theoretic entropy formula of $C^{2}$ random $\mathbb{Z}^k$-actions via the Lyapunov spectra of the generators. Some formulas and bounds of topological entropy for certain random $\mathbb{Z}^k$(or $\mathbb{Z}_+^k$ )-actions generated by more general maps, such as Lipschitz maps, continuous maps on finite graphs and $C^{1}$ expanding maps, are also obtained. Moreover, as an application, we give a formula of Friedland's entropy for certain $C^{2}$ $\mathbb{Z}^k$-actions.
Non-free almost finite actions for locally finite-by-virtually $\mathbb{Z}$ groups

Abstract:In this paper, we study almost finiteness and almost finiteness in measure of non-free actions. Let $\alpha:G\curvearrowright X$ be a minimal action of a locally finite-by-virtually $\mathbb{Z}$ group $G$ on the Cantor set $X$. We prove that under certain assumptions, the action $\alpha$ is almost finite in measure if and only if $\alpha$ is essentially free. As an application, we obtain that any minimal topologically free action of a virtually $\mathbb{Z}$ group on an infinite compact metrizable space with the small boundary property is almost finite. This is the first general result, assuming only topological freeness, in this direction, and these lead to new results on uniform property $\Gamma$ and $\mathcal{Z}$-stability for their crossed product $C^*$-algebras. Some concrete examples of minimal topological free (but non-free) subshifts are provided.

Non-Hausdorff germinal groupoids for actions of countable groups

Abstract:We study conditions under which the germinal groupoid associated to a minimal equicontinuous action of a countable group on a Cantor set has non-Hausdorff topology. We develop a new criterion, which serves as an obstruction for the étale topology on the groupoid to be non-Hausdorff. We use this and other criteria to study the topology of germinal groupoids for a few classes of actions. In particular, we give examples of families of contracting and non-contracting self-similar groups, which are amenable and whose actions have associated germinal groupoids with non-Hausdorff topology.

Abstract:For an arbitrary countable discrete infinite group G, non-singular rank-one actions are introduced. It is shown that the class of non-singular rank-one actions coincides with the class of non-singular -actions. Given a decreasing sequence of cofinite subgroups in G with , the projective limit of the homogeneous G-spaces as is a G-space. Endowing this G-space with an ergodic non-singular non-atomic measure, we obtain a dynamical system which is called a non-singular odometer. Necessary and sufficient conditions are found for a rank-one non-singular G-action to have a finite factor and a non-singular odometer factor in terms of the underlying -parameters. Similar conditions are also found for a rank-one non-singular G-action to be isomorphic to an odometer. Minimal Radon uniquely ergodic locally compact Cantor models are constructed for the non-singular rank-one extensions of odometers. Several concrete examples are constructed and several facts are proved that illustrate a sharp difference of the non-singular non-commutative case from the classical finite measure preserving one: odometer actions which are not of rank-one and factors of rank-one systems which are not of rank one; however, each probability preserving odometer is a factor of an infinite measure preserving rank-one system, etc.

Abstract:Abstract Packing topological entropy is a dynamical analogy of the packing dimension, which can be viewed as a counterpart of Bowen topological entropy. In the present paper we give a systematic study of the packing topological entropy for a continuous G -action dynamical system $(X,G)$ , where X is a compact metric space and G is a countable infinite discrete amenable group. We first prove a variational principle for amenable packing topological entropy: for any Borel subset Z of X , the packing topological entropy of Z equals the supremum of upper local entropy over all Borel probability measures for which the subset Z has full measure. Then we obtain an entropy inequality concerning amenable packing entropy. Finally, we show that the packing topological entropy of the set of generic points for any invariant Borel probability measure $\mu $ coincides with the metric entropy if either $\mu $ is ergodic or the system satisfies a kind of specification property.

Abstract:The local properties of entropy for a countable discrete amenable group action are studied. For such an action, a local variational principle for a given finite open cover is established, from which the variational relation between the topological and measure-theoretic entropy tuples is deduced. While doing this it is shown that two kinds of measure-theoretic entropy for finite Borel covers coincide. Moreover, two special classes of such an action: systems with uniformly positive entropy and completely positive entropy are investigated.

Abstract:A minimal equicontinuous action by homeomorphisms of a discrete group $\Gamma$ on a Cantor set $X$ is locally quasi-analytic, if each homeomorphism has a unique extension from small open sets to open sets of uniform diameter on $X$. A minimal action is stable, if the actions of $\Gamma$ and of the closure of $\Gamma$ in the group of homeomorphisms of $X$, are both locally quasi-analytic. When $\Gamma$ is virtually nilpotent, we say that $\Phi \colon \Gamma \times \mathfrak{X} \to \mathfrak{X}$ is a nilpotent Cantor action. We show that a nilpotent Cantor action with finite prime spectrum must be stable. We also prove there exist uncountably many distinct Cantor actions of the Heisenberg group, necessarily with infinite prime spectrum, which are not stable.

A Halmos-von Neumann theorem for actions of general groups

Abstract:We give a new categorical approach to the Halmos-von Neumann theorem for actions of general topological groups. As a first step, we establish that the categories of topological and measure-preserving irreducible systems with discrete spectrum are equivalent. This allows to prove the Halmos-von Neumann theorem in the framework of topological dynamics. We then use the Pontryagin and Tannaka-Krein duality theories to obtain classification results for topological and then measure-preserving systems with discrete spectrum. As a byproduct, we obtain a complete isomorphism invariant for compactifications of a fixed topological group.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a countable discrete amenable group which acts continuously on a compact metric space $X$ and let $\mu$ be an ergodic $G-$invariant Borel probability measure on $X$. For a fixed tempered Følner sequence $\{F_n\}$ in $G$ with $\lim\limits_{n\rightarrow+\infty}\frac{|F_n|}{\log n}=\infty$, we prove the following variational principle: $$h^B(G_{\mu},\{F_n\})=h_{\mu}(X,G),$$ where $G_{\mu}$ is the set of generic points for $\mu$ with respect to $\{F_n\}$ and $h^B(G_{\mu},\{F_n\})$ is the Bowen topological entropy (along $\{F_n\}$) on $G_{\mu}$. This generalizes the classical result of Bowen in 1973.
