Abstract:An efficient ruthenium‐catalyzed divergent alkylation and olefination of methyl 1,3,5‐triazines with alcohols have been developed. The selectivity can be rationally tuned by the judicious choice of ruthenium catalyst, wherein Ru(PPh3)3Cl2 delivers alkylated 1,3,5‐triazines and RuCl3 gives olefinated 1,3,5‐triazines in up to 98 % yield. Following this simple, facile, and high atom economical protocol, a broad range of products was prepared in moderate to good yields and tolerated heterocyclic or benzylic alcohols containing functionalities. The overall transformation operates through dehydrogenation of primary alcohols under the reaction conditions to provide the corresponding aldehydes, which further undergo condensation with methyl 1,3,5‐triazines.

The reaction occurred in moderate to good yields and tolerated heterocyclic or aryl allyl alcohols containing functionalities such as alkanes, ethers, and halogens. The reaction proceeds through a one-pot sequence of transfer hydrogenation and condensation steps.

Abstract:By using the commercially available ruthenium pincer complex (Ru-MACHO-BH) as a catalyst, the challenging direct hydrogenation of lactams and analogues has been successfully accomplished to deliver corresponding value-added amino alcohols in good-to-excellent yields under mild reaction conditions. Remarkably, in addition to N-protected lactams, unprotected ones could also be readily reduced in the presence of a catalytic amount of weak base or even under neutral reaction conditions, which further highlights the broad substrate scope and the protocol efficiency.

Abstract:A ruthenium complex bearing a functional ligand [(p-cymene)Ru(2,2′-bpyO)(H2O)] was found to be a general and efficient catalyst for the direct N-alkylation of 2-amino-azoles with alcohols to 2-(N-alkylamino)zoles. In the presence of catalyst (0.5 mol %), a range of desirable products were obtained with complete regioselectivity. Mechanistic experiments supported that functional groups in bpy ligand are crucially important for the catalytic activity of ruthenium complexes. Notably, this research would facilitate the progress of metal–ligand bifunctional catalysts for the hydrogen autotransfer process.

Abstract:Ruthenium-catalyzed oxidation of multisubstituted allyl alcohols in the presence of benzaldehyde gives enals or enones in good yields. Unlike the commonly reported ruthenium-catalyzed isomerization reaction of allyl alcohols to give saturated ketones, an intermolecular rather than intramolecular hydrogen transfer is involved in this transformation. This reaction offers an efficient, mild, and high-yielding method for the preparation of substituted α,β-unsaturated compounds.

Abstract:An efficient approach for the remote C-H alkylation of arenes, employing a variety of N-directing groups is described. This method facilitates the straightforward synthesis of valuable phenylethylamine derivatives by exclusively cleaving the benzylic C-N bond in aziridines. Furthermore, these products can easily remove the protecting groups, resulting in a variety of meta-substituted compounds, such as amines and ketones, which hold significance in synthetic chemistry.

Abstract:The allylation of 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds and malononitrile with aliphatic allylic substrates is achieved under mild conditions in the presence of new ruthenium catalysts. The ruthenium complex [Ru(C5Me5)(2-quinolinecarboxylato)(CH2CHCH-n-Pr)] [BF4] as a precatalyst, allows the synthesis of mono-allylated branched derivatives. On the other hand, the parent complex [Ru(C5Me5)(MeCN)(3)] [PF6] as a precatalyst, straightforwardly favours the bis-allylation of the procarbonucleophiles leading to bis-allylated bislinear products. The involvement of the two precatalysts provides a sequential synthesis of unsymmetrical mixed linear-branched bis-allylated derivatives.

Abstract:A ruthenium-catalyzed switchable N-H/C-H alkenylation reaction of 6-phenyl-(dihydro) pyridazin-3(2H)-ones triggered by a nitrogen/oxygen atmosphere was developed. To achieve switchable modification of the two important sites of the widely used pharmacophore, a simple and efficient procedure containing two optimized ruthenium catalytic systems was utilized, which afforded excellent activity, high selectivity, and good tolerance of a wide range of functional groups.

Abstract:This report describes the Ru(II)-catalyzed C-H allylation of N,N-dialkyl thiobenzamides with allyl carbonate. The reaction is carried out using [RuCl2(p-cym)]2 in the presence of Cu(OAc)2 and Ag2O. This method represents the first example of Ru-catalyzed C-H allylation directed by sulfur-containing groups. As a further advantage, the method is performed in sustainable and eco-friendly MeCN as a solvent.

Abstract:A new series of cationic ruthenium( II ) complexes, [RuCl(PPh 3 ) 2 (κ 3 -NNN- L1 )]Cl ( 1 ), [RuH(PPh 3 ) 2 (κ 3 -NNN- L2 )]Cl ( 2 ), and [RuH(PPh 3 ) 2 (κ 3 -NNN- L3 )]Cl ( 3 ), bearing a 2,6-bis (1-R-5-methyl-pyrazol-3-yl) pyridine ligand ( L1 : R = H, L2 : R = C 6 H 4 - p -CF 3 , L3 : R = C 6 H 4 - p -OCH 3 ), were synthesized and characterized with NMR, HRMS, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Their catalytic application was investigated in the acceptorless dehydrogenation (AD) of primary alcohols. Complex 1 outperformed 2 and 3 in terms of the selectivity towards the aldehydes, and provided the aldehydes with a yield of up to 99%, with good functional group tolerance under mild conditions. In addition, the only by-product of the reaction was dihydrogen, which can be collected as clean energy, and the reaction meets the requirements of environment-friendly chemistry. Complex 1 also proved to be a promising catalyst in the sequential AD/condensation reaction between the primary and secondary alcohols, affording α,β-unsaturated ketones in moderate to good selectivity.

Abstract:Both imidazol-2-ylidene (ImNHC) and 1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidene (tzNHC) have evolved to be elite groups of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands for homogeneous catalysis. To develop efficient ruthenium(II)-based catalysts incorporating these ligands for C-N bond-forming reactions via hydrogen-borrowing methodology, we utilized chelating ligands integrated with ImNHC and mesoionic tzNHC donors connected via a CH2 spacer with a diverse triazole backbone. The synthesized ruthenium(II) complexes 3 are found to be highly efficient for C-N bond formation across a wide range of primary amine and alcohol substrates under solvent-free conditions, and among all of the complexes studied here, catalyst 3a with a mesityl substituent displayed maximum activity. To our delight, catalyst 3a is also effective for the selective mono-N-methylation of various anilines utilizing methanol as a coupling partner, known to be relatively more difficult than other alcohols. Furthermore, complex 3a also delivers various substituted quinolines successfully via the reaction of 2-aminobenzyl alcohol with several secondary alcohols. Importantly, catalyst 3a exhibited the highest activity among the reported ruthenium(II) complexes for both the N-benzylation of aniline [achieving a turnover number (TON) of 50000] and the realization of quinoline 8a by reacting 2-aminobenzyl alcohol with 2-phenylethanol (attaining a TON of 30000).
