Abstract:Potassium isotopes hold great promise for tracing geological processes, but their analyses are fraught with complexities. Various methods using different generations of MC-ICPMS instruments have been developed, each with distinct advantages and disadvantages. In this study, we report on K isotopic measurements performed using the Thermo Scientific Neoma collision cell MC-ICPMS/MS to explore the potential of the instrument. The tests were conducted under wet plasma conditions, and the precision achieved was ~0.03 to 0.1 ‰ (95% c.i.) for 5–25 measurements in a single analytical session, comparable to other established techniques. The measurements were accurate within the tested concentration range of 50–500 ppb K. A K concentration mismatch between samples and standards of up to 5% was acceptable, while acid molarity mismatch had a pronounced effect on the measured K isotopic compositions. Matrix elements did not significantly impact K isotopic measurements when their concentration was below 2% of K. Several geostandards were measured, and the obtained values agree with those from other measurement techniques. Overall, our tests suggest that measuring K isotopes with Neoma collision cell MC-ICPMS/MS is possible, but the high sensitivity of the instrument to tuning settings requires considerable efforts for conducting such measurements.

Abstract:High precision potassium isotope ratio measurements were made using a collision-cell equipped single focusing Multi-Collector Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (MC-ICP-MS). Interferences on 41K from 40ArH+ were largely suppressed through collision with He gas atoms, and reaction with H2 or D2 gas molecules in the collision cell under optimum collision gas flow conditions. Using H2 or D2 as the collision gas, we distinguish charged argon–deuterium molecules (ArD+) generated in the collision cell from argon hydride (ArH+) generated in the plasma or in the interface region (referred to as “plasma-related AH+” hereafter), and demonstrate, for the first time, that both plasma-related and collision cell-generated ArH+ are important sources of ArH+ that interfere with 41K+ in collision-cell ICP-MS instruments that use H2 as a collision gas. The use of D2 instead of H2 as a reactive gas in the collision cell resulted in better overall performance in K isotope ratio measurements. By combining these mass spectrometry methods with chemical purification of K by ion exchange chromatography, we achieved an internal precision of u003c±0.07‰ (2 standard error) and an external reproducibility of u003c±0.21‰ (2 standard deviation, or 95% confidence) in the 41K/39K ratio measurement for geological and biological samples. With the improved precision, it is possible to distinguish a ∼1.3‰ variation in K isotope compositions (41K/39K ratios) among seawater, igneous rocks, and biological samples. The K isotope system is likely to be beneficial in providing a better understanding of potassium cycling during continental weathering and the uptake of nutrients by plants.

Abstract:In recent years, with the rapid development of multi-collector inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry（MC-ICP-MS）, the analytical precision of potassium（K） isotopes has been greatly improved, which in turn has promoted their development as potential geochemical tracers in processes involving continental weathering, crust-mantle interaction, and so on. Until now, the cumbersome and time-consuming process of sample pretreatments and the poor analytical accuracy caused by argon hydrides interference are still the biggest obstacles to the wide application of K isotopes. After completely dissolving the samples with hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, and hydrofluoric acid, purification of K from major matrix was performed on a customized quartz ion exchange column packed with ～2.7 mL of AG50W-X8 cation exchange resin（BioRad TM,200～400 mesh） using 0.5 mol/L HNO 3 as the eluent. This one-step procedure can effectively separate K from Li, Na, Ti, Mg, Mn, Al and Ca, except for Cr, in most of the geological samples. To find the appropriate method for high-precision stable K isotopic measurements, for minimizing the ArH + yield and improving the stability of the instrument, three methods were compared here（the high-resolution mode, high-resolution mode with continuous acquisition measurement run mode, and the low-resolution mode with a method designed to eliminate ArH + interference）. The low-resolution mode has the advantages of low cost, high stability, and high precision（long-term precision at about 0.08‰ for our laboratory）. When used to measure the K isotopic composition of a series of international geological reference materials, the results are consistent with previous values within analytical precision, indicating the reliability of this method. The K isotopic composition of a set of Chinese national rock standard materials is determined here. The measured values of K isotopes can provide a reference for the data comparison between different laboratories in future.

Abstract:With advances in analytical precision by multicollector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, K and Mg isotopes are increasingly used as a combined tool in tracing sources and processes in geoscientific research. However, reported methods in the literature require at least two column separation procedures during sample purification, which is time-consuming (at least two days). Therefore, a single column procedure could improve efficiencies, and these efforts are necessary to extend the combined application of K and Mg isotopes as geological tracers. In this study, a simple and time-efficient chromatographic procedure was reported, utilizing a single column for quantitative separation of both K and Mg from sample matrices for high-precision isotopic measurement of K and Mg. Using this novel method, the results for international geological standards agreed with published values, verifying the robustness of the procedure. The popularization of this optimized procedure would potentially extend the combined application of K and Mg isotopes in geological studies.

Abstract:Rationale Stable K isotope geochemistry is becoming an important tool for various applications. Developments in analytical methods for K isotopes based on multicollector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS) without collision cell will bring research capability of K isotopes to many existing MC-ICP-MS labs. Methods Stable K isotopes were analyzed without applications of "cold plasma" and collision cell on a Nu 1700 Sapphire high-resolution multicollector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer. A conventional dry and hot plasma setting is used for analysis to maintain high K sensitivity and signal stability, and high mass resolution was applied to provide interference-free shoulders of K-39(+) for isotopic measurement of K-41/K-39 ratios. Ar-40(+) ion beam generated in ICP was neutralized in the ion guide rail for the Daly detector. Results Under such operating conditions, an external reproducibility of <+/- 0.1 parts per thousand (2 standard deviation) for K-41/K-39 is achieved for K solutions of 1 ppm or above. Tests were carried out to evaluate the influence of total K loading, K concentration and acid molarity mismatch, matrix effects, and Ar-40(+) and (ArH+)-Ar-40-H-1 tailing on K isotope analysis. We found that the accuracy of K isotope analysis can be compromised by concentration mismatch of sample and standard K, by 0.007 parts per thousand in delta K-41 per 1% mismatch of K content. By contrast, mismatch of HNO3 molarity or existence of HCl in HNO3 exerts negligible influences on the analytical precision and accuracy of K isotope analysis. Furthermore, K isotope analytical results remain accurate when Na/K, Mg/K, Ca/K, Rb/K, V/K, and Cr/K ratios are below 3%. Conclusions The high-precision K isotope analytical method reported here is robust for studies on K isotopic variations in geological, cosmochemical, and biological samples. The f(41)K values of six international geostandards measured using our method are consistent with data measured using different analytical methods from other laboratories.

Abstract:RationaleThe very small mass difference between 41K and 40ArH+ makes the flat, hydride interference‐free peak shoulders very narrow (0.002–0.003 m/z unit), bringing a number of analytical challenges when measuring K isotopic compositions by multi‐collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC‐ICP‐MS). In traditional Sequence Run mode, the parameters are loaded every line of the sequence which can introduce tiny drifts of tune parameters and mass peaks. This may occasionally lead to the failure of K isotope measurements when mass drifts exceed 0.002 m/z unit. It is thus essential to keep the tune parameters, especially the magnet current, very stable to achieve high‐precision K isotopic compositions.MethodWe developed a “Continuous‐Acquisition‐Method” (CAM) MC‐ICP‐MS Run mode to improve the stability when determining K isotopes. Two sets of experiments were designed: (a) Stability test: measuring a single pure K solution (viz. NIST‐999c) for ~3 h and comparing the stability of the two run modes; and (b) GSB‐K test: measuring our inhouse pure K standard solution (GSB‐K) in both run modes and comparing the accuracy and precision.ResultsThe traditional Sequence Run mode only kept the MC‐ICP‐MS system stable for the first ~1.5 h during the ~3‐h test, with an offset of the mass peaks of ~0.003 m/z unit. The CAM Run mode yielded higher stability during the whole test (~3 h), with a peak shift <0.0004 m/z unit. Measurement of the GSB‐K standard solution in Sequence Run and CAM Run modes gives identical δ41K values when the magnet was kept stable, with the CAM Run mode offering a better precision and keeping the instrument stable for longer time.ConclusionsThe MC‐ICP‐MS CAM Run mode shows higher stability and better precision. It is, therefore, good for high‐precision K isotope measurements.

Abstract:Mass-dependent K isotopic fractionations can be used to trace cosmochemical, geological, and biological processes such as evaporation/condensation, core formation, magmatic processes, weathering, and cellular metabolism. However, the application of stable K isotopes has been limited by major isobaric interferences from Ar, common on conventional multi-collector inductively-coupled-plasma mass-spectrometer (MC-ICP-MS), particularly for the low-K samples. Here, we present a set of high-precision K isotopic data acquired on terrestrial rocks, seawater, as well as a lunar meteorite using the recently released Nu Sapphire™ MC-ICP-MS that utilizes a collision cell to minimize Ar based interferences while maintaining remarkably high K sensitivity (≈ 2000 V/ppm). The influence of several parameters on the precision and accuracy of the K isotopic data has been evaluated, including total K concentration, K intensity mismatch between sample and standard, HNO3 molarity mismatch between sample and standard, and the presence of matrix elements. We found that the Nu Sapphire™ can be used to acquire precise and accurate data using as little as 125 ng of K, which represents an improvement by a factor 10 compared to what has been done on previous instruments. We present data for 23 previously analyzed samples; these data are highly consistent with literature values. On the other hand, accurate measurements are conditioned 1) to the close matching of sample and standard K intensities (a 1% mismatch creates a 0.02‰ offset on the 41K/39K ratio), and 2) to the absence of Ca (a Ca/K ratio of 1% creates a 0.069‰ offset on the 41K/39K ratio). In addition, Rb/K, Na/K, Ti/K and Cr/K ratio should also be maintained under 2.5% to avoid isotopic offset.We confirm the existence of significant mass-dependent K isotopic variations in terrestrial samples and that lunar rocks are isotopically heavier than terrestrial rocks. The incomparable sensitivity offered by the Nu Sapphire opens the possibility for high-precision K isotopic measurements across a wide range of samples for diverse applications.

Abstract:Analytical advances in Multi-Collector Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (MC-ICPMS) over the past decade have led to rapid growth in studies utilizing non-traditional stable isotopes. There are substantial analytical challenges for achieving precise and accurate measurements of these isotopes that limit their applications in geoscience where natural isotopic variations are generally small. Here, we evaluate experimental factors that may affect the accuracy and repeatability of isotopic measurements of selected stable metal isotopes (Li, Mg, Fe, Cu, and Zn) on a Nu Plasma II MC-ICPMS to provide optimized analytical protocols for acquiring high quality data. Our results suggest that the repeatability level (2SD) that is readily obtainable for delta Li-7 is +/- 0.09 parts per thousand to +/- 0.24 parts per thousand, for delta Mg-26 is +/- 0.03 parts per thousand to +/- 0.07 parts per thousand, for delta Fe-56 is +/- 0.05 parts per thousand to +/- 0.07 parts per thousand, for delta Cu-65 is +/- 0.03 parts per thousand to +/- 0.05 parts per thousand, and for delta Zn-66 is +/- 0.02 parts per thousand to +/- 0.04 parts per thousand. Instrumental mass bias for these isotope systems can be corrected adequately using the standard-sample bracketing method but it requires that target elements are of high purity, a close match in analyte concentrations between samples and bracketing standards, and preparation of all running solutions using the same concentration of nitric acid. Overall, the Nu Plasma II is well suited for precise and accurate analyses of the isotopes studied here, and the optimal results were obtained using a 'wet' plasma operating at a normal radio-frequency (RF) power.

Abstract:Herein, we present a new method for determining the Ca isotopic composition of geological samples. To eliminate matrix elements from Ca, a column chromatography method was developed using a N,N,N'N' tetraoctyl-1,5-diglycolamide (TODGA) resin. The Ca isotopic compositions were measured by a multiple collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS) without collision cell equipment, especially that direct measurement to 44Ca/40Ca can be achieved. To mitigate the interference from 40Ar during 40Ca measurement, the cold plasma technique was used to suppress the Ar+ generation, resulting in a background Ar+ intensity of <300 mV, in contrast to the conventional hot plasma conditions, which typically yield thousands of volts for Ar+ intensities. Given the potential for a concentration mismatch between the sample and bracketed standard solutions to cause an intensive shift in measured Ca isotopic compositions, a correction for the [Ca] match is needed. To avoid matrix effects arising from residue matrix elements, it is crucial to limit the concentrations below 1% of Ca for most matrix elements (including Al, Mg, K, Na, and Sr) and below 1‰ for Fe. Notably, the tolerance of residue Sr is effectively improved compared to measurements with CC-MC-ICP-MS and traditional Hot-plasma-SSB-MC-ICP-MS methods with the conventional hot plasma technique, thereby lowering the complexity of column chemistry. The measured δ44/40Ca, δ44/42Ca, and ε40Ca values for eight reference materials agree well with previously reported values within analytical uncertainties. This method demonstrates long-term precision is better than 0.10‰ (two standard deviations) for both δ values (i.e., δ44/40Ca and δ44/42Ca). We anticipate that the proposed method will benefit the growth of the Ca isotope data set and foster an increase in the application of Ca isotope in Earth science studies.
Significantly Enhanced Robustness of K Isotope Analysis by Collision Cell MC-ICP-MS and Its Application to the Returned Lunar Samples by China’s Chang’e-5 Project

Abstract:Stable K isotope ratios, an emerging research tool for a wide range of problems, can be measured precisely with high sensitivity by using collision cell multicollector ICP mass spectrometers (CC-MC-ICP-MS). However, it has been shown that the accuracy of K isotope analysis by CC-MC-ICP-MS could be compromised severely by trace-level Ca contaminants, although the cause of such an effect remains poorly understood. Here, we report that the influence of Ca on K isotope analysis by CC-MC-ICP-MS can be dramatically reduced if D2 rather than H2 (the default gas) is used as the reaction gas that goes into the collision cell. This indicates the generation of positively charged calcium-hydride molecules in the collision cell. Usage of D2 as reaction gas circumvents the Ca-induced inaccuracy issues during K isotope analysis because 40CaD+ does not interfere with 41K+ as 40CaH+ does; as such, the robustness of K isotope analysis by CC-MC-ICP-MS is significantly enhanced. This improved method is verified by K isotope analysis of seven geostandards, and applied to China's Chang'e-5 lunar return samples at submicrogram K consumption, revealing significant K isotope variability within a 17 mg lunar basalt fragment.

Abstract:A compact resonance ionization mass spectrometer is developed using two laser diodes and a quadrupole mass spectrometer to perform trace element analysis of potassium. With the help of a narrow linewidth of the laser diode, the isotope shifts of $^{40}{\rm K}$ and $^{41}{\rm K}$ of the 405 nm line with respect to $^{39}{\rm K}$, corresponding to the transition of $4\,^2$S$_{1/2}\rightarrow$ $5\,^2$P$^\circ_{1/2}$, are measured to be $207\pm13$ MHz and $451\pm10$ MHz, respectively, by comparing them to the known hyperfine splitting widths of the $4\,^2{\rm S}_{1/2}$ ground state of each potassium isotope. The overall detection efficiency of an order of $\sim10^{-6}$ in our setup indicates the availability of RIMS to the analysis of the trace metal impurities on or in a certain material such as the contamination assessment of semiconductor wafers.

Abstract:Rationale Potassium (K) is a major component of several silicate minerals and seawater, and, therefore, constraining past changes in the potassium cycle is a promising way of tracing large‐scale geological processes on Earth. However, [K] measurement using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP‐MS) is challenging due to an ArH + interference, which may be of a similar magnitude to the K + ion beam in samples with <0.1% m/m [K]. Methods In this work, we investigated the effect of the ArH + interference on K/Ca data quality by comparing results from laser‐ablation (LA)‐ICP‐MS measured in medium and high mass resolution modes and validating our LA results via solution ICP‐optical emission spectroscopy (OES) and solution ICP‐MS measurements. To do so, we used a wide range of geological reference materials, with a particular focus on marine carbonates, which are potential archives of past changes in the K cycle but are typically characterised by [K] < 200 μg/g. In addition, we examine the degree to which trace‐element data quality is driven by downhole fractionation during LA‐ICP‐MS measurements. Results Our results show that medium mass resolution (MR) mode is sufficiently capable of minimising the effect of the ArH + interference on K + . However, the rate of downhole fractionation for Na and K varies between different samples as a result of their differing bulk composition, resulting in matrix‐specific inaccuracy. We show how this can be accounted for via downhole fractionation corrections, resulting in an accuracy of better than 1% and a long‐term reproducibility (intermediate precision) of <6% (relative standard deviation) in JCp‐1NP using LA‐ICP‐MS in MR mode. Conclusion Our [K] measurement protocol is demonstrably precise and accurate and applicable to a wide range of materials. The measurement of K/Ca in relatively low‐[K] marine carbonates is presented here as a key example of a new application opened up by these advances.

High-precision K Isotopic Analysis of Cerebrospinal Fluid and Blood Serum Microsamples via Multicollector Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry Equipped with 10 13 Ω Faraday Cup Amplifier Resistors

Abstract:Background Potassium isotopic analysis is increasingly performed in both geological and biological contexts as a result of the introduction of MC-ICP-MS instrumentation equipped with either a collision/reaction cell or having the capability of working at "extra-high" mass resolution in order to deal with spectral interference caused by argon hydride (ArH + ) ions. Potassium plays an important role in the central nervous system, and its isotopic analysis could provide an enhanced insight into the corresponding processes, but K isotopic analysis of cerebrospinal fluid is challenging due to the small volume, a few microliter only, typically available. This work aimed at developing a method for determining the K isotopic signature of serum and cerebrospinal fluid at a final K concentration of 25 ng mL -1 using Faraday cup amplifiers equipped with a 10 13 Ω resistor. Results Potassium isotope ratios obtained for reference materials measured at a final K concentration of 25 ng mL -1 were in excellent agreement with the corresponding reference values and the internal and external precision for the δ 41 K value were 0.11 ‰ (2SE, N = 50) and 0.10 ‰ (2SD, N = 6), respectively. The robustness against the presence of matrix elements and concentration mismatch between sample and standard observed at higher K concentrations is preserved at low K concentration. Finally, K isotopic analysis of serum and cerebrospinal fluid (3 to 12 μL of sample) of healthy mice of both sexes was performed, revealing a trend towards an isotopically lighter signature for female serum and cerebrospinal fluid, however being significant for serum only. Significance This work provides a robust method for high-precision K isotopic analysis at a concentration of 25 ng mL -1 . By monitoring both K isotopes, 39 K and 41 K, with Faraday cups connected to amplifiers with 10 13 Ω resistors, accurate K isotope ratio results are obtained with a two-fold improvement in internal and external precision compared to those obtained with the set-up with traditional 10 11 Ω resistors. The difference in the K isotope ratio in CSF and serum between the sexes, is possibly indicating sex-based fractionation effects during cellular uptake/release or might be affected by the hormonal effects.

An Efficient Li Dual-Column System and High-Precision Li Isotope Measurement of High Matrix and Low-Li Samples by MC-ICP-MS

Abstract:Over the last decade, there has been a growing interest in using lithium (Li) isotopes in marine carbonates to trace chemical weathering and clay formation in the Earth's history. Yet it remains technically challenging to precisely and efficiently determine the Li isotope composition in carbonate samples due to the imperfect Li separation led by the matrix effect and the extremely low Li concentration in carbonates relative to the analytical threshold of sample size. For such high matrix and low-Li samples, here we present an efficient dual-column chromatography system for Li purification. The dual-column system has a large loading capacity, fixed Li elution range of merely 12 mL, complete Li recovery (>99.5%) and relatively efficient total elution time (7 hours). The procedural blank is 0.036 & PLUSMN; 0.002 ng accounting for sample dissolution and chemical purification, and the Na/Li mass ratio of the Li cut is below 0.5. High precision and accurate Li isotope measurement is performed efficiently with a small sample-sized protocol developed on a MC-ICP-MS (Neptune plus) connected with an APEX 2-IR desolvator. The whole procedure is validated by analyzing a series of certified reference materials. The long-term external precision of & delta;Li-7 determined based on L-SVEC and a high-purity Li solution is 0.6 & PTSTHOUSND; (2SD) and 0.9 & PTSTHOUSND; (2SD) for a minimum sample size of 7.5 ng.
