Abstract:CO2 emission is partly responsible for climate change induced by greenhouse effects. Carbon capture, utilization and storage is a major pathway to reduce CO2 emission. This article reviews conversion of CO2 into value-added products by photocatalytic, electrocatalytic and photoelectrocatalytic processes, which involve a catalyst, a reducing agent, an electrolyte and a reactor. An ideal catalyst should be cheap, abundant, non-toxic, less corrosive and chemically stable. Doping various catalysts can increase product yields up to 207 times. Furthermore, monolith reactors generated 23 times and 14 times higher yields than slurry and cell reactors, respectively. Photoelectrocatalytic conversion standout because it combines the advantages of photocatalytic and electrocatalytic processes such as high product yield and selectivity, no electrical energy required, cost-effectiveness, more catalysts option and no sacrificial donor.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the primary greenhouse gas contributing to anthropogenic climate change which is associated with human activities. The majority of CO2 emissions are results of the burning of fossil fuels for energy, as well as industrial processes such as steel and cement production. Carbon capture, utiliza-tion, and storage (CCUS) is a sustainable technology promising in terms of reducing CO2 emissions that would otherwise contribute to climate change. From this perspective, the discussion on carbon capture focuses on chemical absorption technology, primarily due to its commercialization potential. The CO2 absorptive capacity and absorption rate of various chemical solvents have been summarized. The carbon utilization focuses on electrochemical conversion routes converting CO2 into potentially valuable chemi-cals which have received particular attention in recent years. The Faradaic conversion efficiencies for various CO2 reduction products are used to describe efficiency improvements. Abstract:With the expansion of industry, the emission of greenhouse gases is increasing, and its impact on climate is becoming more and more serious. CO2 is the main culprit of the greenhouse effect, and how to effectively solve the climate problem caused by CO2 has attracted more and more attention. In recent years, there have been continuous attempts to reduce CO2 emissions from the source, but no obvious results have been achieved. In fact, CO2 is not only a greenhouse gas, but also a potential carbon resource. Therefore, how to capture and effectively use CO2 is also the research direction that many scholars have been exploring recently. In this paper, the current situations of CO2 capture technologies are reviewed from the aspects of chemical absorption, solid-phase porous materials adsorption, membrane separation, cryogenic separation, hydrate method and microbiological method in the first part. Then, the CO2 utilization technologies are systematically introduced from the aspect of physical utilization, chemical utilization, biological utilization and mineralization utilization. Furthermore, several representative frontier technologies of CO2 resource utilization are reported. On this basis, the advantages and disadvantages of different methods are summarized to provide some ideas and references for alleviating the CO2 issue.

Therefore, the search for sustainable solutions to normalize the currently unbalanced carbon dioxide cycle is the central research topic of many scientific disciplines. The green and sustainable electrocatalysis offers a very promising answer to currently unbalanced carbon dioxide cycle. In this review, recent advances in electrocatalysis enabled CO2 cycle including the electrochemical carboxylation of CO2 and decarboxylative functionalization of carboxylic acids are highlighted.

Abstract:Dramatically increased CO2 concentration from several point sources is perceived to cause severe greenhouse effect towards the serious ongoing global warming with associated climate destabilization, inducing undesirable natural calamities, melting of glaciers, and extreme weather patterns. CO2 capture and utilization (CCU) has received tremendous attention due to its significant role in intensifying global warming. Considering the lack of a timely review on the state-of-the-art progress of promising CCU techniques, developing an appropriate and prompt summary of such advanced techniques with a comprehensive understanding is necessary. Thus, it is imperative to provide a timely review, given the fast growth of sophisticated CO2 capture and utilization materials and their implementation. In this work, we critically summarized and comprehensively reviewed the characteristics and performance of both liquid and solid CO2 adsorbents with possible schemes for the improvement of their CO2 capture ability and advances in CO2 utilization. Their industrial applications in pre- and post-combustion CO2 capture as well as utilization were systematically discussed and compared. With our great effort, this review would be of significant importance for academic researchers for obtaining an overall understanding of the current developments and future trends of CCU. This work is bound to benefit researchers in fields relating to CCU and facilitate the progress of significant breakthroughs in both fundamental research and commercial applications to deliver perspective views for future scientific and industrial advances in CCU.

Abstract:CO2 emission is deemed to be mainly responsible for global warming. To reduce CO2 emissions into the atmosphere and to use it as a carbon source, CO2 capture and its conversion into valuable chemicals is greatly desirable. To reduce the transportation cost, the integration of the capture and utilization processes is a feasible option. Here, the recent progress in the integration of CO2 capture and conversion is reviewed. The absorption, adsorption, and electrochemical separation capture processes integrated with several utilization processes, such as CO2 hydrogenation, reverse water–gas shift reaction, or dry methane reforming, is discussed in detail. The integration of capture and conversion over dual functional materials is also discussed. This review is aimed to encourage more efforts devoted to the integration of CO2 capture and utilization, and thus contribute to carbon neutrality around the world.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO2) emission from fossil fuel utilization poses a potential thread to global climate. Recent development in electrochemical CO2 reduction opens up new possibilities of utilization of CO2 as a carbon feedstock for fuel generation and commodity chemicals. This article reviewed progress related to electrochemical CO2 reduction in the past few years, with a focus on new development of CO2 reduction electrocatalysts, mechanistic understanding of CO2 electro-reduction reaction, and process engineering efforts in CO2 electrolyzers. Abstract:To address the CO2 accumulation in atmosphere, various initiatives have been proposed, among which CO2 capture and utilization (CCU) is regarded as an appealing strategy to reconcile carbon emission and resource utilization. Especially, integrated CO2 capture and utilization (ICCU), i.e. performing CO2 capture and in-situ conversion can circumvent the energy-intensive CO2 desorption step and thus facilitate establishing step- and energy-efficient process, rendering the conversion at mild conditions particularly at low pressure due to substantial activation upon CO2 uptake. However, CO2 capture and in-situ conversion is not the simple add-up of these two processes. Its successful implementation relies on the harmonization of CO2 capture reagents, substrates and the corresponding catalysts. By far, tremendous efforts have been made in this field and a plethora of CO2 capture reagents including inorganic bases, organic bases, ionic liquids and carbonaceous materials have been utilized to capture CO2 and the conversion protocols such as hydrogenation, cycloaddition, carboxylative cyclization etc. have been explored for these captured CO2. As a result, the valuable products containing methanol, methane, carbonates, carbamates, oxazolidinones, ureas, and quinazolinone have been obtained from CO2 and more importantly, the CO2 chemistry theory is also enriched via investigating the structure and reactivity of the captured CO2 in various reactions. In this review, we summarize the progress on CO2 capture and in-situ conversion based on the reaction types and corresponding CO2 absorbents. It’s hoped that this review can shed light on the design of CO2 capture and in-situ conversion and inspire the further development of this field.

Abstract:Chemical conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) into high-value chemicals or fuels is exceedingly attractive due to its green and sustainable features. However, practical technologies on scale utilisation of CO2 is few, and nearly no new industrial processes on the topic emerge over the years. The current bottlenecks e.g. low efficiency and atom economy seriously restrict the process development. In recent studies, catalytic activation of CO2 and/or substrate is revealed to play a significant role in promotion of CO2 functionalization to valuable chemicals including representative reactions of epoxides/propargyl alcohols/propargylamines with CO2, multi-component cascade reactions, N-formylation of amines with CO2 and hydrosilanes, and unactivated C-H bond carboxylation. Herein, recent significant advances (2017-2022) on effective chemical fixation of CO2 through molecular activation or synergistic activation strategies in homogeneous systems are overviewed. The superiority of molecular activation in thermochemical catalysis is shown in a wide range of CO2 transformations. Through CO2/substrate activation and catalysis with the well-developed metal or organocatalysts, the valuable chemicals are successfully attained in great efficiency. The new progress will provide significant guidance to promote the effective and sustainable utilisation of CO2.

Abstract:The creation of effective CO2 capture systems is a critical undertaking since carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions have a significant impact on global climate change. Carbon dioxide capture technology is an important environmental protection technology that can effectively reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In this article, the technical principles of carbon capture are introduced, along with a thorough explanation of the benefits and drawbacks of each carbon capture technology. The article also discusses the potential future directions for development of technologies. The use of activated carbon, organic amine water, amino acid and other technologies to capture carbon dioxide has been put into application. To achieve higher treatment efficiency and efficiency, new materials such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), biological methods, and membrane separation method are also being further explored. Overall, carbon capture technology is a technology with broad development prospects and application prospects. Although most of these technologies are still in the laboratory stage and only a small portion are in operation, they will shine brightly in the future and become a top priority in affecting climate change of Earth.

Abstract:The excessive emission of CO2 causes severe environmental problems. Sustainable CO2 management based on carbon capture and utilization plays important role in addressing emission-control issue. Among various routes, synergistic coupling between CO2 capture and conversion brings prospects for energy conservation by simultaneously avoiding the energy-intensive regeneration, compression and transportation steps in conventional sequential pathway. Herein, this review summarizes the state-of-the-art progress in promising materials for integrated capture and conversion of CO2 in terms of electrochemical CO2 reduction and thermochemical CO2 hydrogenation. The integrated electrochemical process eliminates the critical issues faced by CO2 gas-fed electrolysers, and integrated thermochemical process performing in a single reactor under isothermal conditions benefits from lower energy consumption and less capital investment. Rational design and precise manipulation of key adsorbents/absorbents and catalysts and the influence of interactions between them are discussed. Several considerations are put forward from industrial application perspectives and potential development directions of materials and systems that boost the high selectivity towards valuable products. This review highlights the major challenges and emerging opportunities in integrated CO2 capture and utilization systems, which provides guidance for future investigations.

Abstract:The unabated carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emission into the atmosphere has exacerbated global climate change, resulting in extreme weather events, biodiversity loss, and an intensified greenhouse effect. To address these challenges and work toward carbon (C) neutrality and reduced CO 2 emissions, the capture and utilization of CO 2 have become imperative in both scientific research and industry. One cutting-edge approach to achieving efficient catalytic performance involves integrating green bioconversion and chemical conversion. This innovative strategy offers several advantages, including environmental friendliness, high efficiency, and multi-selectivity. This study provides a comprehensive review of existing technical routes for carbon sequestration (CS) and introduces two novel CS pathways: the electrochemical-biological hybrid and artificial photosynthesis systems. It also thoroughly examines the synthesis of valuable C n products from the two CS systems employing different catalysts and biocatalysts. As both systems heavily rely on electron transfer, direct and mediated electron transfer has been discussed and summarized in detail. Additionally, this study explores the conditions suitable for different catalysts and assesses the strengths and weaknesses of biocatalysts. We also explored the biocompatibility of the electrode materials and developed novel materials. These materials were specifically engineered to combine with enzymes or microbial cells to solve the biocompatibility problem, while improving the electron transfer efficiency of both. Furthermore, this review summarizes the relevant systems developed in recent years for manufacturing different products, along with their respective production efficiencies, providing a solid database for development in this direction. The novel chemical-biological combination proposed herein holds great promise for the future conversion of CO 2 into advanced organic compounds. Additionally, it offers exciting prospects for utilizing CO 2 in synthesizing a wide range of industrial products. Ultimately, the present study provides a unique perspective for achieving the vital goals of "peak shaving" and C-neutrality, contributing significantly to our collective efforts to combat climate change and its associated challenges.

Abstract:The escalating level of atmospheric carbon dioxide is one of the most pressing environmental concerns of our age. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) from large point sources such as power plants is one option for reducing anthropogenic CO(2) emissions; however, currently the capture alone will increase the energy requirements of a plant by 25-40%. This Review highlights the challenges for capture technologies which have the greatest likelihood of reducing CO(2) emissions to the atmosphere, namely postcombustion (predominantly CO(2)/N(2) separation), precombustion (CO(2)/H(2)) capture, and natural gas sweetening (CO(2)/CH(4)). The key factor which underlies significant advancements lies in improved materials that perform the separations. In this regard, the most recent developments and emerging concepts in CO(2) separations by solvent absorption, chemical and physical adsorption, and membranes, amongst others, will be discussed, with particular attention on progress in the burgeoning field of metal-organic frameworks.

Abstract:Catalytic conversion of CO 2 to value-added products has attracted overwhelming attention considering its environmental significance and economic benefit. However, because of the kinetic inertness and thermodynamic stability of CO 2 , great challenge still remains on its efficient activation, which is well-accepted as an uphill reaction that requires substantial energy inputs. This mini-review summarizes the state-of-the-art CO 2 activation strategies, including thermocatalysis, electrocatalysis, photocatalysis, and other emerging catalytic techniques, for instance, coupling photo with thermal field. Moreover, the advantages, disadvantages, and potential products are discussed. Furthermore, CO has many industrial applications, such as being an important feedstock in the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. Therefore, recent research progress and challenges in CO 2 catalytic conversion to CO are highlighted in this mini-review by comparing different techniques with an outlook on the development of catalysts.

Abstract:The escalating level of atmospheric carbon dioxide is one of the most pressing environmental concerns of our age.Many researches have targeted at developing and improving new approaches of CO2 separation and capture.The technologies of carbon dioxide adsorption separation and CO2 capture mechanism were mainly summarized.The researches and disadvantages of traditional CO2 capture materials were summed up.The development and progress of new materials for carbon dioxide capture and separation were mainly discussed.Researches and development of new CO2 capture materials will help ease the global warming,which played an important role in global environmental problems.
