Abstract:Photocatalytic reduction of CO2 into hydrocarbon fuels, an artificial photosynthesis, is based on the simulation of natural photosynthesis in green plants, whereby O2 and carbohydrates are produced from H2 O and CO2 using sunlight as an energy source. It couples the reductive half-reaction of CO2 fixation with a matched oxidative half-reaction such as water oxidation, to achieve a carbon neutral cycle, which is like killing two birds with one stone in terms of saving the environment and supplying future energy. The present review provides an overview and highlights recent state-of-the-art accomplishments of overcoming the drawback of low photoconversion efficiency and selectivity through the design of highly active photocatalysts from the point of adsorption of reactants, charge separation and transport, light harvesting, and CO2 activation. It specifically includes: i) band-structure engineering, ii) nanostructuralization, iii) surface oxygen vacancy engineering, iv) macro-/meso-/microporous structuralization, v) exposed facet engineering, vi) co-catalysts, vii) the development of a Z-scheme system. The challenges and prospects for future development of this field are also present.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO2), a member of greenhouse gases, contributes significantly to maintaining a tolerable environment for all living species. However, with the development of modern society and the utilization of fossil fuels, the concentration of atmospheric CO2 has increased to 400 ppm, resulting in a serious greenhouse effect. Thus, converting CO2 into valuable chemicals is highly desired, especially with renewable solar energy, which shows great potential with the manner of photothermal catalysis. In this review, recent advancements in photothermal CO2 conversion are discussed, including the design of catalysts, analysis of mechanisms, engineering of reactors, and the corresponding techno-economic analysis. A guideline for future investigation and the anthropogenic carbon cycle are provided.

Abstract:In recently years, photocatalytic CO 2 conversion into the value-added chemicals represents a promising approach to relieve the current energy and environmental problems, because it can be powered by renewable solar energy. This review introduces the principles and mechanisms of photocatalytic CO 2 conversion, with a particular focus on the research progress and key strategies involved in the behavioural manipulation of interfacial electron transfer and selectivit of multi-carbon products. Besides, the structure–activity relationship has also been summarized about the currently reported photocatalyst focuing on generation on multi-carbon products. Furthermore, the review also probes the current challenges and future directions, including improved CO 2 conversion efficiency and selectivity, understanded the reaction mechanism and considerated the economic and environmental factors. We sincerely hope that this review will attract more research attention towards photocatalytic CO 2 conversion for the synthesis of value-added multi-carbon products.

Abstract:With the development of the global economy, large amounts of fossil fuels are being burned, causing a severe energy crisis and climate change. Photocatalytic CO2 reduction is a clean and environmentally friendly method to convert CO2 into hydrocarbon fuel, providing a feasible solution to the global energy crisis and climate problems. Photocatalytic CO2 reduction has three key steps: solar energy absorption, electron transfer, and CO2 catalytic reduction. The previous literature has obtained many significant results around the first two steps, while in the third step, there are few results due to the need to add a co-catalyst. In general, the co-catalysts have three essential roles: (1) promoting the separation of photoexcited electron–hole pairs, (2) inhibiting side reactions, and (3) improving the selectivity of target products. This paper summarizes different types of photocatalysts for photocatalytic CO2 reduction, the reaction mechanisms are illustrated, and the application prospects are prospected.

Abstract:In recent years, the increase of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere has become a global environmental issue because of the serious problems, such as the “greenhouse effect”. The idea of mimicking the overall natural photosynthetic cycle of chemical conversion of CO2 into useful fuels has been consistently gaining attention for more than thirty years. Such artificial photosynthesis allows direct conversion of CO2 and water on photocatalysts into valuable hydrocarbon using sunlight at room temperature and ambient pressure to serve to reduce atmospheric CO2 concentrations while providing on a renewable carbon fixation and energy storage. In this presentation, we will report the utilization of solar energy to highly efficient conversion of CO2 into renewable hydrocarbon fuel over structured nanomaterials. The geometric shape and exposure of specific crystal planes of the nanostructures as well as combination of graphene as a good electron collector and transporter are a requisite for the high level of photocatalytic reduction of CO2. Abstract:Photocatalytic CO 2 reduction towards various fuels is of significant interest under the background of mitigating the global warming induced by CO 2 emission and lowering the depletion of fossil fuels. However, state-of-the-art photocatalysts still suffer from sluggish reaction dynamics and frustrated product selectivity, especially for C 2+ generations, which are of great interest for industrial applications. Over the past decades, comprehensive research on solar-driven CO 2 reduction has consistently unveiled some encouraging results in meaningful pathways and architectural design of active sites over photocatalysts. This review highlights the recent advances in boosting photocatalytic CO 2 reduction of atomically dispersed catalysts via engineered active sites, including two separated active sites, paired dual-active sites, and nanoclusters based on the configuration of active sites. Both the mechanism of CO 2 activation over active sites and advanced characterization methods are discussed in detail. Particularly, in consideration of the wide gap between fundamental research and practical applications, the integrations of experimental and theoretical results are analyzed to realize the underlying structure-activity relationships as well as promising selectivity toward target products. Finally, the remaining challenges in the field are outlined, and inquisitive perspectives with a focus on the rational design of active sites and mechanistic investigation are proposed.

Abstract:The excess depletion of carbon-rich fossil fuels and agroforest biomass resources has aggravated the energy crisis and environmental pollution, causing increased CO2 emissions. Accordingly, the goal of "peak CO2 emissions and carbon neutrality" is proposed to alleviate global warming. CO2-to-fuel conversion is considered as a preferable move for reducing the atmospheric CO2 concentration and further upgrading to chemical feedstocks. However, the highly efficient CO2 conversion remains challenging due to the thermodynamic limits and kinetic barriers, which require high energy input through conventional thermocatalysis. Inspired by "artificial photosynthesis," photocatalytic CO2 transformation has received tremendous attention and makes remarkable progress over the past decades, although it is still far from practical application. Recently, the integrated photothermocatalysis has emerged as an intelligent strategy to utilize solar energy to induce local heating and energetic hot carriers, which synergistically promote CO2-to-fuel conversion. The key to the success of CO2 upgradation is catalysts' development with improved activity, selectivity, and stability. This review highlights the recent advancements in materials designing for practical CO2 conversion through thermocatalysis, photocatalysis, and photothermocatalysis during the past five years, emphasizing the reaction pathways and mechanism on the C=O bond activation and intermediates formation. Finally, the current challenges and future opportunities are described.

Abstract:Converting the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide into important chemical fuels is promising to alleviate the global warming problem. Photocatalytic CO2 reduction is beneficial for energy storage and environmental protection; however, it suffers from low efficiency. Recently, photothermal catalysis, which merits the advantages of both photocatalysis and traditional thermally driven catalysis, has been extensively studied and proven promising. Herein, the scope of catalyst type within heterogeneous catalysts is discussed, the latest progress of photothermal heterogeneous catalysts designed for CO2 conversion reactions is described, including the reduction of CO2 by H2O, CO2 hydrogenation to CO, CH4, CH3OH, or C2+, CO2 reforming of CH4 (CRM), CO2 cycloaddition reaction, etc. the preparation principles of photothermal catalysts are summarized, the challenges on the design and development of highly efficient photothermal catalysts are pointed out, and the future research directions are prospected.

Abstract:Using heat or radiation as a single driving force for implementing carbon dioxide (CO2) conversion is usually limited by sluggish kinetics. Whereas the thermally-assisted photocatalysis by coupling utilization of solar energy and thermal energy has therefore provided a promising alternative strategy to boost the conversion of CO2 into high value-added synthetic fuels or chemicals under mild conditions. Herein, we will focus on the state-of-the-art advance in CO2 reduction to fuels by thermally-assisted photocatalysis, with emphases on the thermally-promoted principles, the thermal input patterns as well as the product distributions of CO2 reduction. In addition, some current challenges and perspectives will be discussed. This review not only gives a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of thermally-assisted photocatalytic CO2 reduction, but provides guidelines to other catalytic transformations (e.g. methane oxidation, nitrogen fixation, and organic coupling reactions) by integrating solar and thermal energy to enhance the reaction efficiency.

Abstract:Fossil fuels are currently the major energy source and are rapidly consumed to supply the increasing energy demands of mankind. CO2, a product of fossil fuel combustion, leads to climate change and will have a serious impact on our environment. There is an increasing need to mitigate CO2 emissions using carbon–neutral energy sources. Therefore, research activities are devoted to CO2 capture, storage and utilization. For instance, photocatalytic reduction of CO2 into hydrocarbon fuels is a promising avenue to recycle carbon dioxide. Here we review the present status of the emission and utilization of CO2. Then we review the photocatalytic conversion of CO2 by TiO2, modified TiO2 and non-titanium metal oxides. Finally, the challenges and prospects for further development of CO2 photocatalytic reduction are presented.

Abstract:The conversion of carbon dioxide into useful fuels or chemical feedstocks is of great importance for achieving carbon emission peak and carbon neutrality. The harvesting and conversion of solar energy will provide a sustainable and environmentally friendly energy source for human production and living. Very recently, photothermal catalysis has been proved to exhibit great advantages in reducing the reaction temperature, promoting the catalytic activity, and manipulating the reaction pathway in comparison with traditional thermal catalysis. In this review, we firstly introduced the fundamental mechanisms and categories of photothermal catalysis to understand the synergy or the difference between photochemical and thermochemical reaction pathways. Subsequently, the criteria and strategies for photothermal catalyst design are discussed in order to inspire the development of high-efficiency photothermal catalytic route by achieving intense absorption of broadband solar energy spectrum and high conversion capability of solar-to-heat. Recent progress in CO2 reduction achieved by photothermal catalysis was summarized in terms of production types. In the end, the future challenges and perspectives of photothermal catalytic CO2 reduction are presented. We hope that this review will not only deepen the understanding of photothermal catalysis, but also inspire the design, preparation and application of high-performance photothermal catalysts, aiming at alleviating non-renewable fossil energy consumption and carbon emissions for early carbon emission peak and carbon neutrality.

Abstract:Nowadays, the excessive use of fossil fuels has led to a global energy shortage and exacerbated the greenhouse effect. One of the main contributors to the greenhouse effect is the excessive emission of carbon dioxide (CO2). Therefore, to achieve sustainable development and harmonious symbiosis between human and nature, reducing CO2 emission has become a global concern. Converting CO2 into value-added products can effectively address this issue. At present, the photocatalytic reduction of CO2 using synthetic nanocomposites is a common method. Among the products of photocatalytic CO2 reduction, methanol (CH3OH) show promise as a new clean fuel and basic chemical raw material, with potential to reduce energy consumption. This paper reviews the research progress of photocatalytic reduction of CO2 to CH3OH in recent years. The difficulties and challenges in the photocatalytic process, along with potential solutions, are briefly discussed. Finally, the future prospect of this research is outlined.
