Abstract:The rising levels of CO2 are unavoidably connected to climate change and its consequences on atmospheric temperatures throughout the world. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is a dependable and practical method for capturing carbon emissions from industry. This article introduces the realms of direct air capture, post-combustion carbon capture, and pre-combustion carbon capture. Furthermore, the paper delves into the fascinating world of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) materials with a high porosity, tunable structures, and exceptional adsorption capacities that can effectively absorb substantial quantities of CO2, qualifying them as promising candidates for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The synthesis methods and performance evaluation of MOF materials concerning carbon capture were introduced. Some of the challenges associated with MOFs are also discussed, including their reduced stability at high temperatures and sensitivity to moisture. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of carbon capture technologies, highlighting the potential of MOFs while addressing current challenges and opportunities in the field.

Abstract:With the expansion of industry, the emission of greenhouse gases is increasing, and its impact on climate is becoming more and more serious. CO2 is the main culprit of the greenhouse effect, and how to effectively solve the climate problem caused by CO2 has attracted more and more attention. In recent years, there have been continuous attempts to reduce CO2 emissions from the source, but no obvious results have been achieved. In fact, CO2 is not only a greenhouse gas, but also a potential carbon resource. Therefore, how to capture and effectively use CO2 is also the research direction that many scholars have been exploring recently. In this paper, the current situations of CO2 capture technologies are reviewed from the aspects of chemical absorption, solid-phase porous materials adsorption, membrane separation, cryogenic separation, hydrate method and microbiological method in the first part. Then, the CO2 utilization technologies are systematically introduced from the aspect of physical utilization, chemical utilization, biological utilization and mineralization utilization. Furthermore, several representative frontier technologies of CO2 resource utilization are reported. On this basis, the advantages and disadvantages of different methods are summarized to provide some ideas and references for alleviating the CO2 issue.

Abstract:To address the CO2 accumulation in atmosphere, various initiatives have been proposed, among which CO2 capture and utilization (CCU) is regarded as an appealing strategy to reconcile carbon emission and resource utilization. Especially, integrated CO2 capture and utilization (ICCU), i.e. performing CO2 capture and in-situ conversion can circumvent the energy-intensive CO2 desorption step and thus facilitate establishing step- and energy-efficient process, rendering the conversion at mild conditions particularly at low pressure due to substantial activation upon CO2 uptake. However, CO2 capture and in-situ conversion is not the simple add-up of these two processes. Its successful implementation relies on the harmonization of CO2 capture reagents, substrates and the corresponding catalysts. By far, tremendous efforts have been made in this field and a plethora of CO2 capture reagents including inorganic bases, organic bases, ionic liquids and carbonaceous materials have been utilized to capture CO2 and the conversion protocols such as hydrogenation, cycloaddition, carboxylative cyclization etc. have been explored for these captured CO2. As a result, the valuable products containing methanol, methane, carbonates, carbamates, oxazolidinones, ureas, and quinazolinone have been obtained from CO2 and more importantly, the CO2 chemistry theory is also enriched via investigating the structure and reactivity of the captured CO2 in various reactions. In this review, we summarize the progress on CO2 capture and in-situ conversion based on the reaction types and corresponding CO2 absorbents. It’s hoped that this review can shed light on the design of CO2 capture and in-situ conversion and inspire the further development of this field.

Abstract:The escalating level of atmospheric carbon dioxide is one of the most pressing environmental concerns of our age. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) from large point sources such as power plants is one option for reducing anthropogenic CO(2) emissions; however, currently the capture alone will increase the energy requirements of a plant by 25-40%. This Review highlights the challenges for capture technologies which have the greatest likelihood of reducing CO(2) emissions to the atmosphere, namely postcombustion (predominantly CO(2)/N(2) separation), precombustion (CO(2)/H(2)) capture, and natural gas sweetening (CO(2)/CH(4)). The key factor which underlies significant advancements lies in improved materials that perform the separations. In this regard, the most recent developments and emerging concepts in CO(2) separations by solvent absorption, chemical and physical adsorption, and membranes, amongst others, will be discussed, with particular attention on progress in the burgeoning field of metal-organic frameworks.

Current Opinion in Green and Sustainable Chemistry

Abstract:This short paper suggests a review of the latest developments and current challenges associated with carbon dioxide capture, utilization and storage. Recent research has been conducted to reduce energy consumption, costs and improve efficiency. In carbon dioxide capture catalysts have been added to solvents while new membrane and sorbent materials have been investigated. In mineral carbon dioxide storage, studies have been carried out to improve reaction rates. Regarding the utilization path, attention has been focused on the development of sustainable chemical (mainly based on electrochemical conversion), biochemical routes and power generation. Considering the respective challenges, future effort should be focused toward the optimization of these systems at all levels, public acceptance and new policies and regulations for their spread.

Abstract:In light of the depletion of fossil fuels and the increased daily requirements for liquid fuels and chemicals, CO2 should indeed be regarded as a valuable C1 additional feedstock for sustainable manufacturing of liquid fuels and chemicals. Development and deployment of CO2 capture and chemical conversion processes are among the grand challenges faced by today’s scientists and engineers. Very few of the reported CO2 capture and conversion technologies have been employed for industrial installations on a large scale, where high-efficiency, cost/energy-effectiveness, and environmental friendliness are three keys factors. The CO2 capture technologies from stationary sources and ambient air based on solvents, solid sorbents, and membranes are discussed first. Transforming CO2 to liquid fuels and chemicals, which are presently produced from petroleum, through thermochemical, electrochemical, photochemical, and biochemical routes are discussed next. The relevant state-of-the-art computational methods and tools as a complement to experiments are also briefly discussed. Finally, after pointing out the advantages and disadvantages of the currently available technologies for CO2 capture and conversion, ideas and perspectives for the development of new techniques, opportunities, and challenges are highlighted.

Abstract:The excessive emission of CO2 causes severe environmental problems. Sustainable CO2 management based on carbon capture and utilization plays important role in addressing emission-control issue. Among various routes, synergistic coupling between CO2 capture and conversion brings prospects for energy conservation by simultaneously avoiding the energy-intensive regeneration, compression and transportation steps in conventional sequential pathway. Herein, this review summarizes the state-of-the-art progress in promising materials for integrated capture and conversion of CO2 in terms of electrochemical CO2 reduction and thermochemical CO2 hydrogenation. The integrated electrochemical process eliminates the critical issues faced by CO2 gas-fed electrolysers, and integrated thermochemical process performing in a single reactor under isothermal conditions benefits from lower energy consumption and less capital investment. Rational design and precise manipulation of key adsorbents/absorbents and catalysts and the influence of interactions between them are discussed. Several considerations are put forward from industrial application perspectives and potential development directions of materials and systems that boost the high selectivity towards valuable products. This review highlights the major challenges and emerging opportunities in integrated CO2 capture and utilization systems, which provides guidance for future investigations.

Abstract:In recent years, climate change has increasingly become one of the major challenges facing mankind today, seriously threatening the survival and sustainable development of mankind. Dramatically increasing carbon dioxide concentrations are thought to cause a severe greenhouse effect, leading to severe and sustained global warming, associated climate instability and unwelcome natural disasters, melting glaciers and extreme weather patterns. The treatment of flue gas from thermal power plants uses carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technology, one of the most promising current methods to accomplish significant CO2 emission reduction. In order to implement the technological and financial system of CO2 capture, which is the key technology of CCUS technology and accounts for 70-80% of the overall cost of CCUS technology, it is crucial to create more effective adsorbents. Nowadays, with the development and application of various carbon dioxide capture materials, it is necessary to review and summarize carbon dioxide capture materials in time. In this paper, the main technologies of CO2 capture are reviewed, with emphasis on the latest research status of CO2 capture materials, such as amines, zeolites, alkali metals, as well as emerging MOFs and carbon nanomaterials. More and more research on CO2 capture materials has used a variety of improved methods, which have achieved high CO2 capture performance. For example, doping of layered double hydroxides (LDH) with metal atoms significantly increases the active site on the surface of the material, which has a significant impact on improving the CO2 capture capacity and performance stability of LDH. Although many carbon capture materials have been developed, high cost and low technology scale remain major obstacles to CO2 capture. Future research should focus on designing low-cost, high-availability carbon capture materials.

Abstract:The escalating rate of fossil fuel combustion contributes to excessive CO2 emission and the resulting global climate change has drawn considerable attention. Therefore, tremendous efforts have been devoted to mitigate the CO2 accumulation in the atmosphere. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) strategy has been regarded as one of the promising options for controlling CO2 build-up. However, desorption and compression of CO2 need extra energy input. To circumvent this energy issue, carbon capture and utilization (CCU) strategy has been proposed whereby CO2 can be captured and in situ activated simultaneously to participate in the subsequent conversion under mild conditions, offering valuable compounds. As an alternative to CCS, the CCU has attracted much concern. Although various absorbents have been developed for the CCU strategy, the direct, in situ chemical conversion of the captured CO2 into valuable chemicals remains in its infancies compared with the gaseous CO2 conversion. This review summarizes the recent progress on CO2 capture and in situ catalytic transformation. The contents are introduced according to the absorbent types, in which different reaction type is involved and the transformation mechanism of the captured CO2 and the role of the absorbent in the conversion are especially elucidated. We hope this review can shed light on the transformation of the captured CO2 and arouse broad concern on the CCU strategy.

Abstract:The rapidly increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations have been a growing threat to human society. Selective capture of CO2 remains challenging with global importance. Recent works on porous materials demonstrated their potential and effectiveness in ameliorating the CO2 problem. This review will summarize the progress in advanced porous materials such as zeolites, metal-organic frameworks and porous organic polymers with tailored pore microenvironment and functionality for selective capture of CO2 over the past decade. The application of porous adsorbents for CO2 capture under important scenarios such as flue streams, biogas and direct air capture is presented. We discuss the design strategies for custom-made structure and functionality of porous materials that have led to high-performance CO2 capture with the separation efficiency (e.g., high capacity, selectivity, molecular sieving, moisture resistance) as well as efficient regeneration performance. In addition, this review also concludes the current existing challenges combined with potential directions for future development of porous materials towards industrial CO2 capture.

Abstract:The carbon dioxide (CO2) is notorious as the greenhouse gas, which could cause the global warming and climate change. Therefore, the reduction of the atmospheric CO2 emissions from power plants and other industrial facilities has become as an increasingly urgent concern. In the recent years, CO2 capture and storage technologies have received a worldwide attention. Adsorption is considered as one of the efficient options for CO2 capture because of its cost advantage, low energy requirement and extensive applicability over a relatively wide range of temperature and pressure. The metal organic frameworks (MOFs) show widely potential application prospects in CO2 capture and storage owing to their outstanding textural properties, such as the extraordinarily high specific surface area, tunable pore size, ultrahigh porosity (up to 90%), high crystallinity, adjustable internal surface properties, and controllable structure. Herein, the most important research progress of MOFs materials on the CO2 capture and storage in recent years has been comprehensively reviewed. The extraordinary characteristics and CO2 capture performance of Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks (ZIFs), Bio-metal organic frameworks (bio-MOFs), IL@MOFs and MOF-composite materials were highlighted. The promising strategies for improving the CO2 adsorption properties of MOFs materials, especially the low-pressure adsorption performance under actual flue gas conditions, are also carefully summarized. Besides, CO2 is considered as an abundant, nontoxic, nonflammable, and renewable C1 resource for the synthesis of useful chemicals and fuels. The potential routes for resource utilization of the captured CO2 are briefly proposed.

Abstract:The problem of global warming and climate change has attracted global attention, and reducing the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere is an important step towards solving the problem. This paper mainly introduces the current development status, research hotspots, challenges and some emerging technologies of carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS). Among CO2 capture technologies, solvent absorption technology is currently the most mature and widely used technology, among which ionic liquid technology has great application prospects because its molecular structure can be designed and different functional groups can be connected. The surface functionalization of metal–organic frameworks in the adsorption method endows them with excellent CO2 adsorption capacity. In CO2 transportation, temperature and pressure must be considered in pipeline transportation, because they will affect the phase state of CO2 transportation. The impact of impurities on CO2 pipeline transportation is a challenge that affects pipeline design and transportation safety. In CO2 utilization, the key to enhanced oil recovery, gas recovery and displacement of coalbed methane is to increase the recovery rate and increase the storage capacity at the same time. Only by strengthening the research on the adsorption behavior between CO2 and CH4 and revealing the relevant mechanism can innovative technologies be developed. The chemical utilization of CO2 has formed many routes, but they all lack certain advantages. Most scholars are working on catalysts for CO2 conversion, especially copper-based catalysts that can convert CO2 into methanol. The conversion rate of CO2 can be effectively increased through doping or process improvement. The coupling of electrocatalytic technology and renewable energy is an important development direction in the future. In CO2 storage, geological storage is currently the most important method, especially in saline aquifers. There are currently critical issues concerning reservoir integrity and leakage potential that should be further investigated. CO2 leakage will cause serious environmental problems, and the common monitoring methods are reviewed and discussed in this paper. Finally, the research status, hotspots and cooperation networks of CCUS are summarized by using CiteSpace software in order to help the development of CCUS technology. In addition, through the review and analysis, it is found that CCUS is faced with challenges such as low capture efficiency, difficulties in transformation and utilization, high operating costs, lack of strong support policies, and lack of international cooperation, which restrict the further development of CCUS.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the primary greenhouse gas contributing to anthropogenic climate change which is associated with human activities. The majority of CO2 emissions are results of the burning of fossil fuels for energy, as well as industrial processes such as steel and cement production. Carbon capture, utiliza-tion, and storage (CCUS) is a sustainable technology promising in terms of reducing CO2 emissions that would otherwise contribute to climate change. From this perspective, the discussion on carbon capture focuses on chemical absorption technology, primarily due to its commercialization potential. The CO2 absorptive capacity and absorption rate of various chemical solvents have been summarized. The carbon utilization focuses on electrochemical conversion routes converting CO2 into potentially valuable chemi-cals which have received particular attention in recent years. The Faradaic conversion efficiencies for various CO2 reduction products are used to describe efficiency improvements. Abstract:The growing atmospheric CO(2) concentration and its impact on climate have motivated widespread research and development aimed at slowing or stemming anthropogenic carbon emissions. Technologies for carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) employing mass separating agents that extract and purify CO(2) from flue gas emanating from large point sources such as fossil fuel-fired electricity-generating power plants are under development. Recent advances in solvents, adsorbents, and membranes for postcombust- ion CO(2) capture are described here. Specifically, room-temperature ionic liquids, supported amine materials, mixed matrix and facilitated transport membranes, and metal-organic framework materials are highlighted. In addition, the concept of extracting CO(2) directly from ambient air (air capture) as a means of reducing the global atmospheric CO(2) concentration is reviewed. For both conventional CCS from large point sources and air capture, critical research needs are identified and discussed.

Abstract:Dramatically increased CO2 concentration from several point sources is perceived to cause severe greenhouse effect towards the serious ongoing global warming with associated climate destabilization, inducing undesirable natural calamities, melting of glaciers, and extreme weather patterns. CO2 capture and utilization (CCU) has received tremendous attention due to its significant role in intensifying global warming. Considering the lack of a timely review on the state-of-the-art progress of promising CCU techniques, developing an appropriate and prompt summary of such advanced techniques with a comprehensive understanding is necessary. Thus, it is imperative to provide a timely review, given the fast growth of sophisticated CO2 capture and utilization materials and their implementation. In this work, we critically summarized and comprehensively reviewed the characteristics and performance of both liquid and solid CO2 adsorbents with possible schemes for the improvement of their CO2 capture ability and advances in CO2 utilization. Their industrial applications in pre- and post-combustion CO2 capture as well as utilization were systematically discussed and compared. With our great effort, this review would be of significant importance for academic researchers for obtaining an overall understanding of the current developments and future trends of CCU. This work is bound to benefit researchers in fields relating to CCU and facilitate the progress of significant breakthroughs in both fundamental research and commercial applications to deliver perspective views for future scientific and industrial advances in CCU.

Abstract:The atmospheric CO 2 concentration continues a rapid rise to its current record high value of 416 ppm for the time being. It calls for advanced CO 2 capture technologies. One of the attractive technologies is physical adsorption‐based separation, which shows easy regeneration and long cycle stability, and thus reduced energy penalties and cost. The extensive research on this topic is evidenced by the growing body of scientific and technical literature. The progress spans from the innovation of novel porous adsorbents to practical separation practices. Major CO 2 capture materials include the most widely‐used industrially relevant porous carbons, zeolites, activated alumina, mesoporous silica, and the newly emerging metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent‐organic framework (COFs), etc. The key intrinsic properties such as pore structure, surface chemistry, preferable adsorption sites and other structural features that would affect CO 2 capture capacity, selectivity, and recyclability are first discussed. The industrial relevant variables such as particle size of adsorbents, the mechanical strength, adsorption heat management and other technological advances are equally important, even more crucial when scaling up from bench and pilot‐scale to demonstration and commercial scale. Therefore, we aim to bring a full picture of the adsorption‐based CO 2 separation technologies, from adsorbent design, intrinsic properties evaluation to performance assessment not only under the ideal equilibrium conditions but also in realistic pressure swing adsorption processes .
