Abstract:Huge number of greenhouse gas emission of carbon dioxide leads to global warming, which has put much pressure on both human being’s survival and social economy development. If the storage place and storage way are proper, the storage volume will be very huge. The saline aquifer in deep sedimentary basin is unsuitable for exploration, but it can be used to storage CO2. Based on the mechanism of CO2 storage in saline aquifer, the calculation formula for CO2 storage is obtained, and then the strata and fluid for CO2 storage in saline aquifer are analyzed by numerical simulation, and the influencing factors are systematically evaluated.

Abstract:Geological sequestration of carbon dioxide is a critical strategy to combat global warming, playing a significant role in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and preservation of the global ecosystem. Over more than three decades, this domain has expanded to encompass myriad research avenues and nuanced sub-fields. Proficiency in navigating the dynamic developments and prominent challenges in this arena is imperative for promoting scholarly advancement. In this investigation, bibliometric techniques are applied to perform a comprehensive qualitative and quantitative investigation of the progression of studies on CO2 geological sequestration. The analysis incorporates a thorough review and synthesis of the accumulated literature, comprising 34,392 articles sourced from the Web of Science Core Collection. The assessment primarily scrutinizes the chronological dispersal of research outputs, geographical and institutional representation, principal journals of publication, and patterns of authorship to highlight burgeoning areas of concentrated research endeavors and prospective future research frontiers. The data reveals a pronounced surge in academic literature focusing on CO2 geological storage post-2009, which underscores the increasing value of this research sector. Investigations of CO2 geological sequestration are characterized by widespread international engagement, with notable contributions from the United States, China, and the United Kingdom substantially steering the research discourse. The core investigative themes comprise comprehensive inquiries into the physical and chemical dynamics of CO2 containment, environmental repercussions, safety assessments, evaluation methods, and technological assessments of carbon storage, along with stringent scrutiny of geological contexts for their viability and efficacy as sequestration sites.

Abstract:The earth's temperature and climate are being affected by human activities that involve burning of fossil fuels and the clearing of forests, which release the greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide (CO 2 ). These fossil fuels, include coal and oil, are made of carbon that was first taken from the atmosphere by photosynthesis millions of years ago. The combustion of these fossil fuels is making up >75% of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide and almost 90% of CO 2 emissions overall. Additionally, the Global Carbon Budget 2022 estimates that yearly emissions from burning fossil fuels have grown every decade since the mid-twentieth century, from about 11 billion tons in the 1960s to a 36.6 billion tons in 2022. Therefore, carbon capture and utilization (CCU) is considered an important CO 2 mitigation strategy to support and compliment carbon capture and storage (CCS) objectives for the reduction and storage of CO 2 . CO 2 geological storage (geo-storage) is a promising approach that can help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. However, effective storage in geological underground formations requires understanding the main storage techniques and trapping mechanisms. Additionally, more research is required to enhance these techniques and understand their underlying mechanics. In light of this, this research investigates many underground and oceanic CO 2 geo-storage techniques, such as saline aquifers, depleted oil and gas reservoirs, unmineable coal seams, basalt formations, and hydrates. The stability of CO 2 geo-storage and its many trapping mechanisms are major areas of interest. Physical and chemical processes such as static, capillary, adsorption, solubility, mineral trapping, and ionic exchange are highlighted. Results from field research and experiments show how CO 2 geo-storage technology is becoming more useful. The discussion of this review article provide observations on the future prospects and economic opportunities of CO 2 geo-storage, underlining its transformative potential in combating climate change. By 2030 or late, most of the countries are actively working to increase their CO 2 storage capacity. These efforts include initiatives such as additional funding, regulatory frameworks, and CCUS projects aimed at increasing their potential storage capacity. Concisely, this comprehensive review provides guidance for researchers, policymakers, and those in the industry; as understanding CO2 geo-storage can pave the way for the development of more efficient, sustainable, and safe storage techniques, thus potentially playing a crucial role in addressing the challenge of global climate change. This review is divided into four parts: (1) an overview of the principles of CO 2 geo-storage, (2) an examination of trapping mechanisms for CO 2 geo-storage, (3) an analysis of experimental and field studies on CO 2 geo-storage, and (4) exploration of the prospects for CO 2 geo-storage.

Abstract:Anthropogenic activity mainly burning of fossil fuels like coal, gas and oil is one of the major reasons which increase concentration of earth-warming gases. Chief among these gases is carbon dioxide. As per the data in last 250 years, CO2 level increases from 250 to more than 280 parts per million (PPM). Major consequences of this rise in CO2 level involve disturbance in climatic factors such as sea level rise; floods; droughts; changes in the amount, timing and distribution of rain; increased frequency and intensity of wildfires and disturbance of coastal marine and other ecosystems. That is why control over CO2 production and reducing CO2 level become important. One of the natural ways to CO2 control involves CO2 sequestration which involves removal of CO2 from atmosphere or storage of CO2 from emission sources to vegetation, soil and sediments. Biological carbon sequestration has opened up a new area of research towards enhancing rapid fixation of atmospheric carbon dioxide in present level to reduce and mitigate global warming and climate change. This chapter describes various sources of carbon dioxide with relation to increasing greenhouse gases. It also includes scientific basis for current understanding of climate change and the role of biological carbon sequestration like soil, grassland, peatland and forests for mitigating the increasing atmospheric CO2 concentration.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the primary greenhouse gas contributing to anthropogenic climate change which is associated with human activities. The majority of CO2 emissions are results of the burning of fossil fuels for energy, as well as industrial processes such as steel and cement production. Carbon capture, utiliza-tion, and storage (CCUS) is a sustainable technology promising in terms of reducing CO2 emissions that would otherwise contribute to climate change. From this perspective, the discussion on carbon capture focuses on chemical absorption technology, primarily due to its commercialization potential. The CO2 absorptive capacity and absorption rate of various chemical solvents have been summarized. The carbon utilization focuses on electrochemical conversion routes converting CO2 into potentially valuable chemi-cals which have received particular attention in recent years. The Faradaic conversion efficiencies for various CO2 reduction products are used to describe efficiency improvements. For carbon storage, successful deployment relies on a better understanding of fluid mechanics, geomechanics, and reactive transport, which are discussed in details.(c) 2022 THE AUTHORS. Abstract:A significant amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) is being released into the atmosphere as a result of the acceleration of industrialization and increased energy consumption, which are causing a rise in world temperatures. Despite the fact that nations all over the world have actively participated in CO2 storage projects, there is still not enough to moderate global temperatures. Therefore, there is an urgent need for the development of CO2 sequestration technologies. The main geological storage trapping mechanisms are discussed in this work along with an analysis of the major influencing variables. Additionally, the benefits and drawbacks of significant storage locations and current research hotspots are explored. Storage project development across the globe is outlined. The use of machine learning for CO2 sequestration is reviewed toward the end. This extensive review reveals that the main variables affecting CO2 capture capacity are hydrodynamic and geochemical. The sequestration capability of various storage sites is significantly influenced by the reservoir characteristics and implementation methodologies. The successful implementation of the storage project is determined by local policies and public support. The development of machine learning technologies makes storage projects safer and more dependable.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide and hydrogen storage in geological formations at Gt scale are two promising strategies toward net-zero carbon emissions. To date, investigations into underground hydrogen storage (UHS) remain relatively limited in comparison to the more established knowledge body of underground carbon dioxide storage (UCS). Despite their analogous physical processes can be used for accelerating the advancements in UHS technology, the existing distinctions possibly may hinder direct applicability. This review therefore contributes to advancing our fundamental understanding on the key differences between UCS and UHS through multi-scale comparisons. These comparisons encompass key factors influencing underground gas storage, including storage media, trapping mechanisms, respective fluid properties, petrophysical properties, and injection scenarios. They provide guidance for the conversion of our existing knowledge from UCS to UHS, emphasizing the necessity of incorporating these factors relevant to their trapping and loss mechanisms. The article also outlines future directions to address the crucial knowledge gaps identified, aiming to enhance the utilisation of geological formations for hydrogen and carbon dioxide storage.

Abstract:With the expansion of industry, the emission of greenhouse gases is increasing, and its impact on climate is becoming more and more serious. CO2 is the main culprit of the greenhouse effect, and how to effectively solve the climate problem caused by CO2 has attracted more and more attention. In recent years, there have been continuous attempts to reduce CO2 emissions from the source, but no obvious results have been achieved. In fact, CO2 is not only a greenhouse gas, but also a potential carbon resource. Therefore, how to capture and effectively use CO2 is also the research direction that many scholars have been exploring recently. In this paper, the current situations of CO2 capture technologies are reviewed from the aspects of chemical absorption, solid-phase porous materials adsorption, membrane separation, cryogenic separation, hydrate method and microbiological method in the first part. Then, the CO2 utilization technologies are systematically introduced from the aspect of physical utilization, chemical utilization, biological utilization and mineralization utilization. Furthermore, several representative frontier technologies of CO2 resource utilization are reported. On this basis, the advantages and disadvantages of different methods are summarized to provide some ideas and references for alleviating the CO2 issue.

Abstract:Energy security and the reduction of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide are two major crises facing the world today. Using carbon dioxide to develop unconventional oil and gas resources is a positive way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which can significantly alleviate global energy security issues. This study systematically introduces the prerequisites for CO2 to extract crude oil and CO2 to be safely and effectively stored. Under high temperature and high pressure, the rock properties of deep reservoirs are completely different from those of atmospheric conditions in the two-phase porous media environment of crude oil and high salinity formation water. The research progress on the phase behavior, mutual solubility, CO2 storage potential and mechanism between supercritical CO2 and crude oil, formation water and reservoir are reviewed in detail. In addition, CO2 leakage will inevitably occur during long-term geological storage, the proper estimation and evaluation of the risk and establishment of corresponding sealing methods are the way forward for CO2 geological storage. By systematically elaborating the nature, advantages and disadvantages of fluid–fluid, fluid–solid interaction and geological integrity destruction mechanism, the directions in which several key problems should be solved were pointed out.

Abstract:The concentration of carbon dioxide gas in atmosphere is remarkably increasing because of burning fossil fuels, such as coal, natural gas and oil. CO2 is an important Greehouse Gas which results in global warming, and it also threatens human life security and social economy sustainable developing. CO2 geological storage is considered to be a fairly significant way to seal CO2 permanently, it can also slow down global warming. Coals have a super adsorption capacity, especially to CO2, because of the special dual porosity and huge specific surface. Therefore, CO2 can be injected and sequestrated in coal seams by geological storage. Geological storage of CO2 can not only reduces its concentration in atmosphere, but also can enhance coalbed methane production synchronously. The paper discusses CO2 injection and sequestration in coal bed to enhance CBM production mechanism, feasibility and propose a technical route. Experiments show that the technical route of CO2 geological storage to enhance CBM production is feasible, and the technical of CO2 geological storage is good for slowing down globle warming and reducing gas accidents.

Abstract:The injection of CO 2 into geological formations triggers inherently coupled thermo-hydro-chemo-mechanical processes. The reservoir pressure and temperature determine the CO 2 density, the CO 2 -water interfacial tension, and the solubility of CO 2 in water (hindered by salts and competing gases). The CO 2 -water interface experiences marked pinning onto mineral surfaces, and contact angles can range from the asymptotic advancing to receding values, in contrast to the single contact angle predicted by Young's equation. CO 2 dissolves in water to form carbonic acid and the acidified water dissolves minerals; mineral dissolution enhances porosity and permeability, triggers settlement, may couple with advection to form "wormholes", produces stress changes and may cause block sliding and shear bands. Convective currents can emerge beneath the CO 2 plume and sustain CO 2 and mineral dissolution processes. On the other hand, mineralization is a self-homogenizing process in advective regimes. The crystallization pressure can exceed the tensile capacity of the host rock and create new surfaces or form grain-displacive lenses. Within the rock matrix, coupled reactive-diffusion-precipitation results in periodic precipitation bands. Adequate seal rocks for CO 2 geological storage must be able to sustain the excess capillary pressure in the buoyant CO 2 plume without experiencing open-mode discontinuities or weakening physico-chemical interactions. CO 2 injection into depleted oil reservoirs benefits from time-proven seals; in addition, CO 2 can mobilize residual oil to simultaneously recover additional oil through oil swelling, ganglia destabilization, the reduction in oil viscosity and even miscible displacement. Rapid CO 2 depressurization near the injection well causes cooling under most anticipated reservoir conditions; cooling can trigger hydrate and ice formation, and reduce permeability. In some cases, effective stress changes associated with the injection pressure and cooling thermoelasticity can reactivate fractures. All forms of carbon geological storage will require large reservoir volumes to hold a meaningful fraction of the CO 2 that will be emitted during the energy transition.

Abstract:CO2 storage in deep geological formations such as depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs, saline aquifers, and methane coal beds has been recognized as an effective method to prevent climate change in the near future. This chapter gives a deeper insight into the major components of the carbon capture and storage technology as a major greenhouse gas mitigation approach implemented worldwide. The mechanisms, challenges, and issues understood so far linked to this technology are discussed. It appears that if a storage project can be safely implemented given the precautions mentioned in this chapter, a great step can be taken towards a better future for the next generation.

Abstract:Anthropogenic carbon emissions have overwhelmed the natural carbon cycle, leading to a dramatic increase in atmospheric CO 2 concentration. The rate of this increase may be unprecedented in Earth's history and is leading to a substantial increase in global temperatures, ocean acidification, sea level rise and potentially human health challenges. In this Geochemical Perspectives we review the natural carbon cycle and its link to global climate. Notably, as directly observed by field observations summarised in this volume, there is a natural negative feedback loop between increasing global temperature, continental weathering rates, and CO 2 that has tended to limit Earth climate changes over geological time scales.Due to the rapid increase in atmospheric carbon concentrations, global average temperatures have increased by more than 1.2 °C since the start of the industrial revolution. One way to slow or even arrest this increasing global average temperature is through Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). Carbon dioxide can be captured either from large industrial point sources or directly from the atmosphere. Taking account of the natural carbon cycle, the most secure approach to storing captured CO 2 is by reacting it with mafic or ultramafic rocks to form stable carbonate minerals, a process referred to as "mineral carbonation". Although mineral carbonation can occur and be accelerated at the Earth's surface, due to the required scale and required time frames it is most effective in the subsurface. This subsurface mineralisation approach was developed into an industrial scale process through an academic-industrial collaboration called CarbFix. The history of CarbFix, from its beginnings as a concept through its installation as an industrial process is presented in detail.This Geochemical Perspectives concludes with an assessment of the future of subsurface mineralisation as a means to help address the global warming challenge, as well as a detailed list of potential research directions that need to be addressed to further upscale and optimise this carbon storage approach. Abstract:Decisive steps in innovation and competitiveness are needed to meet global greenhouse gas emissions and climate goals. As an effective method for reducing carbon emissions, carbon dioxide (CO2) storage and utilization on the seabed enable the transport of captured CO2 via pipelines or ships to permanent storage sites, such as saline aquifers or depleted oil and gas reservoirs in subsea sediments, or by injecting CO2 for the replacement and displacement of subsea resources (oil, gas, gas hydrates, etc.). Subsea CO2 utilization and storage (SCUS) involves several research hotspots worldwide, including international and local laws and regulations, security, economics, environmental impact, and public acceptance. Its current research and engineering progress are also of great interest. In addition, the vigorous implementation of the energy transition and the rapid development of renewable energy sources globally have resulted in significant advancements in SCUS. This paper provides an overview of carbon dioxide storage and utilization mechanism in the seabed, analyzes key technical and economic issues, and summarizes existing research on safety risks, monitoring technologies, and investment and operating cost control to identify remaining knowledge gaps. This is followed by an overview of global engineering practice to update on current progress. Finally, combined with the actualities of China, the potential and trend of China's seabed carbon storage and utilization are summarized. This review demonstrates the enormous development prospects for seabed carbon storage and utilization, although some risks remain including leakage and contamination, with which innovation in monitoring technologies and the self-sealing effect of gas hydrate, safe subsea utilization and storage of CO2 can be achieved. Additionally, considering the development of renewable energy and the demand for large-scale energy storage, hydrogen, ammonia, or other energy carriers and carbon dioxide storage and utilization can be coupled into an industrial chain to form an economically competitive carbon geological storage mode.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the major contributor to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and the main driver of climate change. Currently, CO2 utilization is increasingly attracting interest in processes like enhanced oil recovery and coal bed methane and it has the potential to be used in hydraulic fracturing processes, among others. In this review, the latest developments in CO2 capture, utilization, conversion, and sequestration are examined through a multi-scale perspective. The diverse range of CO2 utilization applications, including mineralization, biological utilization, food and beverages, energy storage media, and chemicals, is comprehensively presented. We also discuss the worldwide research and development of CO2 utilization projects. Lastly, we examine the key challenges and issues that must be faced for pilot-scale and industrial applications in the future. This study demonstrates that CO2 utilization can be a driver for the future development of carbon capture and utilization technologies. However, considering the amount of CO2 produced globally, even if it can be reduced in the near-to mid-term future, carbon capture and storage will remain the primary strategy and, so, complementary strategies are desirable. Currently, the main CO2 utilization industry is enhanced oil and gas recovery, but considering the carbon life cycle, these processes still add CO2 to the atmosphere. In order to implement other CO2 utilization technologies at a large scale, in addition to their current technical feasibility, their economic and societal viability is critical. Therefore, future efforts should be directed toward reduction of energy penalties and costs, and the introduction of policies and regulation encouraging carbon capture, utilization and storage, and increasing the public acceptance of the strategies in a complementary manner.

Abstract:From 2010 to 2013, China Geological Survey (CGS) launched a project“CO2 Geological Storage Potential and Suitability Assessment and Pilot-Project in China”, which has promoted CO2 geological storage study in China. Based on the complex geological conditions of basins in China, the authors have established CO2 geological storage potential and suitability assessment system suitable for China, and assessed CO2 geological storage potential and suitability about the 417 land and shallow marine sedimentary basins with the area greater than 200 km2. The CCS pilot-project in Ejin Horo Banner of Ordos City within Inner Mongolia was carried out, which served as the first coal-based CCS pilot project in deep saline aquifers in China and the largest one in the world. Some scientific and technical breakthroughs in such aspects as drilling, perfusion, sampling and monitoring were achieved. The substantial progress in the basic theoretical researches such as physical chemical and biological process, simulation, environmental impact and safety risk assessment of CO2 geological storage has also been obtained.

Abstract:Geological Carbon Storage (GCS) is a technology that captures CO2 released by human activities and injects it into a specific formation for long-term storage. Globally, GCS is being explored as a feasible option for combating climate change. The formation pressure increases when large amounts of CO2 are injected into the subsurface. The uncontrolled injection can lead to geomechanical-related issues, such as failure of well integrity and fault activation, which will cause the leakage of CO2. CO2 leakage may cause rapid deterioration of the ecological environment and even endanger human life. This paper reviews the current studies on geomechanical issues such as in-situ stress evolution, caprock seal, chemical effects, well integrity, and induced seismicity in GCS technology. The limitations and challenges of the current studies are discussed, and some existing issues and suggestions for future study are put forward.

Abstract:Over the past several decades, a persistent and gradual elevation in atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration has been observed. This rise in CO2 levels contributes to the greenhouse effect, resulting in the trapping of more heat at the planet's surface and subsequent global warming. Based on current trends, it is projected that the global temperature will rise by approximately 1.5 °C between the years 2030 and 2052. In light of this, it becomes imperative to mitigate global warming by undertaking substantial actions to reduce CO2 emissions. One approach to address this challenge is the sequestration of carbon dioxide, whereby it is captured from the atmosphere and utilized to produce valuable products. This has the potential to not only reduce the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere but also lower the cost associated with emissions reduction. Carbon dioxide, when present above ambient levels, can be directly employed in processes such as enhanced oil recovery, where it is injected into oil wells. Additionally, it can be chemically transformed into materials, chemicals, or fuels, such as methanol, cement, biochar, and fuel production. While no single technology can fully address climate change, several innovative approaches have been developed to assist in reducing atmospheric CO2 levels. These include direct air capture, cloud treatment, biomass-based construction, restoration of blue carbon habitats, and enhanced weathering. These methods and strategies for carbon dioxide sequestration are explored and described in order to counteract the adverse effects of CO2 and other greenhouse gases on climate change and global warming. It is crucial to recognize that numerous industries and companies play a substantial role in generating CO2 emissions. Nonetheless, it is feasible to mitigate the concentration of this gas through various measures, both pre and post-emission, thereby reducing its impact on the environment. Therefore, this study aimed to explore and describe innovative approaches and strategies for carbon dioxide sequestration in order to mitigate the adverse effects of CO2 and other greenhouse gases on climate change and global warming.
