Abstract:The addition of nanopillars to electrodes increases their electrochemical capabilities through an increase in electroactive surface area. The nanopillars can be applied on either cathodes or anodes to engage in reduction-oxidation reactions. This minireview summaries some work on cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, impedance change on nanopillared surface and compared their electrochemistry behavior on planar surfaces.

Abstract:Electrodes of nanometer sizes provide a model approach to study the nanoscale electrochemical properties and processes, which are of fundamental and applied significance in a variety of areas including energy and environmental science, scanning probe microscopies, nanofabrication as well as electrochemistry itself. This Perspective reviews recent developments in conceptual understanding, theoretical modelling and simulation, and experimental observation of nanosize-induced properties and phenomena at interfaces between nanometer-sized electrodes and electrolytes. The aim is to provide a view on how the dimension comparability of nanoelectrodes with the electric double layer and the effective electron-tunnelling distance may raise distinct features in interfacial structure and reactivity. The strong coupling between the electrostatic field, the concentration field and the dielectric field of solvent at nanoelectrode/electrolyte interfaces is highlighted. The effects of this coupling on the voltammetric responses of nanoelectrodes are evaluated. Electron transfer kinetics at the nanoelectrode/electrolyte interface is discussed by emphasizing the inappropriateness of the Butler-Volmer (BV) and classic Marcus-Hush (MH) theories at potentials largely departing from the formal potential of the redox moieties and the importance of the long-distance electron tunnelling. The conditions for using the mathematically more straightforward BV and classic MH formalisms as an alternative to the physically more realistic but mathematically unfriendly Marcus-Hush-Chidsey model are analysed.

Abstract:Exploration of electrochemical properties in ultrasmall volumes is still an emerging area. It is not only of great importance for the fundamental research, but also endowed with practical significance in the area of bioanalysis and medicine. Microelectrodes with superior electrochemical characteristics and versatile configurations are suitable tools for the investigation in confined geometries, and remarkable progress involving both preparation methods and theoretical interpretation has been made during the last few decades. Despite this success, electrochemical studies in nanoscopic volumes are still highly challenging due to the less predictable situations in very limited spatial and temporal domains, as well as difficulty in micromanipulation at the nanoscale. In this mini-review, we will summarize the main strategies for this topic, briefly look through the recent advances, and specifically introduce the design and application of a new kind of on-chip ultrasmall electrochemical cells based on micro- and nanogap electrodes, which are prepared by photolithographic method with volume ranging from femtolitre to attolitre. Finally, the limits of current systems and the future perspectives of this field are discussed.

Abstract:Nanoparticle-impact electrochemistry (NIE) is an electroanalytical method based on the stochastic collisions of individual nanoparticles onto an inert ultramicroelectrode. In this article, we overview different characteristics of NIE-based reactions from their ensemble counterpart, that is, enhanced mass transport, intermittent working mode, and reduced reaction time scale. A particular interest is focused on the survey of the resulting changes in the reaction process regarding enhanced reaction efficiency and rate, altered selectivity, and improved catalyst stability. A summary of the application prospect of NIE is followed, and existing challenges are provided.

Abstract:The most commonly used methods to electrodeposit nanomaterials on conductive supports or to obtain electrosynthesis nanomaterials are described. Au, layered double hydroxides (LDHs), metal oxides, and polymers are the classes of compounds taken into account. The electrochemical approach for the synthesis allows one to obtain nanostructures with well-defined morphologies, even without the use of a template, and of variable sizes simply by controlling the experimental synthesis conditions. In fact, parameters such as current density, applied potential (constant, pulsed or ramp) and duration of the synthesis play a key role in determining the shape and size of the resulting nanostructures. This review aims to describe the most recent applications in the field of electrochemical sensors of the considered nanomaterials and special attention is devoted to the analytical figures of merit of the devices.

Abstract:The analysis of single cells instead of cell populations is important for characterizing cellular heterogeneity and elucidating the cellular signalling pathways. Nanoelectrodes have emerged as an increasingly important tool for biomolecule analyses at the single-cell level with high spatial or temporal resolution. Various electrochemical methods, such as amperometry and scanning electrochemical microscopy(SECM), have been applied. Research to date has focused on the development of new nanoelectrochemical architectures, such as arrays, to achieve higher spatial resolution and faster analysis rates for single-cell analysis. In this review, the fabrication of these new nanoelectrochemical architectures and their applications in high spatial resolution single-cell analyses are discussed. The recent progress of Chinese researchers is highlighted.

Abstract:Nanomaterials have gained significant attention as a remarkable class of materials due to their unique properties and the fact that they encompass a wide range of samples with at least one dimension ranging from 1 to 100 nm. The deliberate design of nanoparticles enables the achievement of extremely large surface areas. In the field of cost-effective electrochemical devices for energy storage and conversion applications, nanomaterials have emerged as a key area of research. Their exceptional physical and chemical properties have led to extensive investigations aimed at improving the performance and cost-effectiveness of electrochemical devices, including batteries, supercapacitors, and fuel cells. The continuous development and enhancement of these high-performance materials are driven by the demand for enhanced productivity, connectivity, and sustainability at a reduced cost. This review focuses on the electrochemical performance of electrodes, energy storage, and electrochemical sensors (ES) based on nanotechnology. It discusses the application of nanotechnology in electrochemistry for water purification and the fate of substances in water, while also introducing green nanotechnology and cost-effective, high-fidelity product creation through electrochemical methods. The study emphasizes the synthesis of novel nanomaterials, such as metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), and MXenes, with applications in electrochemical devices. Furthermore, it explores the integration of nanostructures with electrochemical systems in economically significant and future applications, along with the challenges faced by nanotechnology-based industries. The paper also explores the interplay between nanomaterials and biosensors, which play a vital role in electrochemical devices. Overall, this review provides a comprehensive overview of the significance of nanomaterials in the development of cost-effective electrochemical devices for energy storage and conversion. It highlights the need for further research in this rapidly evolving field and serves as a valuable resource for researchers and engineers interested in the latest advancements in nanomaterials for electrochemical devices.

Abstract:Nanopore-based technology offers nanoscale chemical environments with intriguing confinement effects, which isolates individual analytes from the bulk solution. This confined space combines mass transportation and electrochemical measurement, providing new insight into single entity sensing. In this mini-review, we highlight the exciting progress on nanopore electrochemistry. Starting with a concise of nanopore-based electrodes, we introduce the fabrication methods and characterizations of the various nanopore electrodes. Then, the special attention focuses on the application of nanopore electrochemistry in single nanoparticle analyzing and intracellular electrochemical sensing. The advanced data analysis tools and Machine Learning algorithms for rapid encoding single-molecule characteristic sets are also covered, which promotes the sensitivity of nanopore electrochemistry and opens a new possibility for revealing single-entity heterogeneity.

Abstract:Nanoelectrodes are electrodes with a critical dimension in the range of one to hundreds of nanometers and include individual electrodes, nanoelectrode ensembles, and arrays. Metallic nanowires, carbon nanotubes, magnetic nanoparticles, and metal oxide nanowires have been employed to fabricate nanoelectrodes and platforms. In this review, applications of single electrodes, nanoelectrode arrays, and ensembles are briefly evaluated, with emphasis on biological analysis. Nanoelectrodes offer great advantages in numerous areas of biological investigations, particularly in single cells studies, fabrication of microchips, design of coordinated biosensors, and in addressable patterned electrodes. Consequently, nanoelectrodes have immense potential in the development of efficient, specific, sensitive, and intelligent sensors. In conjunction with the rapidly evolving, cost-effective fabrication and materials development approaches, these sensors can be used as direct, point-of-care clinical devices, enabling more personalized medical care. Abstract:While increasing attention has been devoted to the use of carbon-based nanomaterials or metal nanoparticles (MNPs) as electrode modifiers for electroanalysis, there is a noticeable development in studies using MNP-graphene nanocomposites or nanohybrids in very recent years. In this review, first, very recent nanoarchitectures in MNP-graphene nanocomposites for modifying electrodes (mainly in 2013) are summarized together with the targets and achievements of electroanalysis. The variety of nanoarchitectures comes from the fact that graphene oxide and metal precursor ions can be reduced chemically or electrochemically, and concurrently or stepwisely. By browsing various preparation methods of the modified electrodes, some characteristic and interesting features of the preparations of MNP-graphene nanocomposites are described together with the possibilities and prospects as electrode modifiers for electroanalysis.

Abstract:AbstractNowadays, the application of glass nanopipettes in electrochemical analysis has attracted a lot of attention with the increasing demand for sensitive analysis and diagnostic tools for cellular biomolecules. The ultrasmall nanopipettes are becoming a bridge between the macro‐ and nanoworlds as they can transport very small volumes of liquids and materials as well as acting as electrochemical biosensors. In this minireview, we discuss the fabrication and characterization of nanopipettes and introduce our recent studies using nanopipettes for cell electroanalysis. The future application of nanopipettes has also been discussed.

Abstract:This review addresses recent developments in electrochemistry and electroanalytical chemistry of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). CNTs have been proved to possess unique electronic, chemical and structural features that make them very attractive for electrochemical studies and electrochemical applications. For example, the structural and electronic properties of the CNTs endow them with distinct electrocatalytic activities and capabilities for facilitating direct electrochemistry of proteins and enzymes from other kinds of carbon materials. These striking electrochemical properties of the CNTs pave the way to CNT-based bioelectrochemistry and to bioelectronic nanodevices, such as electrochemical sensors and biosensors. The electrochemistry and bioelectrochemistry of the CNTs are summarized and discussed, along with some common methods for CNT electrode preparation and some recent advances in the rational functionalization of the CNTs for electroanalytical applications.
