Abstract:Electrochemistry studies charge transfer and related processes at various microscopic structures (atomic steps, islands, pits and kinks on electrodes), and mesoscopic materials (nanoparticles, nanowires, viruses, vesicles and cells) made by nature and humans, involving ions and molecules. The traditional approach measures averaged electrochemical quantities of a large ensemble of these individual entities, including the microstructures, mesoscopic materials, ions and molecules. There is a need to develop tools to study single entities because a real system is usually heterogeneous, e.g., containing nanoparticles with different sizes and shapes. Even in the case of "homogeneous" molecules, they bind to different microscopic structures of an electrode, assume different conformations and fluctuate over time, leading to heterogeneous reactions. Here we highlight some emerging tools for studying single entity electrochemistry, discuss their strengths and weaknesses, and provide personal views on the need for tools with new capabilities for further advancing single entity electrochemistry.

Abstract:Nanopore-based technology offers nanoscale chemical environments with intriguing confinement effects, which isolates individual analytes from the bulk solution. This confined space combines mass transportation and electrochemical measurement, providing new insight into single entity sensing. In this mini-review, we highlight the exciting progress on nanopore electrochemistry. Starting with a concise of nanopore-based electrodes, we introduce the fabrication methods and characterizations of the various nanopore electrodes. Then, the special attention focuses on the application of nanopore electrochemistry in single nanoparticle analyzing and intracellular electrochemical sensing. The advanced data analysis tools and Machine Learning algorithms for rapid encoding single-molecule characteristic sets are also covered, which promotes the sensitivity of nanopore electrochemistry and opens a new possibility for revealing single-entity heterogeneity.

Abstract:The analysis of single cells instead of cell populations is important for characterizing cellular heterogeneity and elucidating the cellular signalling pathways. Nanoelectrodes have emerged as an increasingly important tool for biomolecule analyses at the single-cell level with high spatial or temporal resolution. Various electrochemical methods, such as amperometry and scanning electrochemical microscopy(SECM), have been applied. Research to date has focused on the development of new nanoelectrochemical architectures, such as arrays, to achieve higher spatial resolution and faster analysis rates for single-cell analysis. In this review, the fabrication of these new nanoelectrochemical architectures and their applications in high spatial resolution single-cell analyses are discussed. The recent progress of Chinese researchers is highlighted.

Abstract:The advantages of nanodevices in structure analysis, field‐effect regulation, in situ monitoring, and simulation modeling of low‐dimensional electrocatalytic materials are introduced. It also emphasizes its multi‐disciplinary and interdisciplinary application. A unique view on the prospects and improvement of nano‐devices is given. Clean and sustainable energy conversion and storage through electrochemistry shows great promise as an alternative to traditional fuel or fossil‐consumption energy systems. With regards to practical and high‐efficient electrochemistry application, the rational design of active sites and the accurate description of mechanism remain a challenge. Toward this end, in this Perspective, a unique on‐chip micro/nano device coupling nanofabrication and low‐dimensional electrochemical materials is presented, in which material structure analysis, field‐effect regulation, in situ monitoring, and simulation modeling are highlighted. The critical mechanisms that influence electrochemical response are discussed, and how on‐chip micro/nano device distinguishes itself is emphasized. The key challenges and opportunities of on‐chip electrochemical platforms are also provided through the Perspective.

Abstract:The general mechanism of chemical sensing is based on molecular recognition linked to different transduction strategies based on electrochemical, optical, gravimetric or thermal effects that can convert the signal to digital information. Electrochemical sensors support accurate, fast, and inexpensive analytical methods with the advantages of being easily embedded and integrated into electronics, and having the greatest potential impact in the areas of healthcare, environmental monitoring (e.g. electronic noses), food packaging and many other applications (E. Bakker and Y. Qin, Anal. Chem., 2006, 78, 3965). Nanoscale electrochemical biosensors offer a new scope and opportunity in analytical chemistry. The reduction in the size of electrochemical biosensors to nanoscale dimensions expands their analytical capability, allowing the exploration of nanoscopic domains, measurements of local concentration profiles, detection in microfluidic systems and in vivo monitoring of neurochemical events by detection of stimulated dopamine release (R. Kennedy, L. Huang, M. Atkinson and P. Dush, Anal. Chem., 1993, 65, 1882). This article reviews both state of art developments in electrochemical nanosensing, and the industrial outlook.

Abstract:Abstract Background The electrochemical biosensor is one of the typical sensing devices based on transducing the biochemical events to electrical signals. In this type of sensor, an electrode is a key component that is employed as a solid support for immobilization of biomolecules and electron movement. Thanks to numerous nanomaterials that possess the large surface area, synergic effects are enabled by improving loading capacity and the mass transport of reactants for achieving high performance in terms of analytical sensitivity. Main body We categorized the current electrochemical biosensors into two groups, carbon-based (carbon nanotubes and graphene) and non-carbon-based nanomaterials (metallic and silica nanoparticles, nanowire, and indium tin oxide, organic materials). The carbon allotropes can be employed as an electrode and supporting scaffolds due to their large active surface area as well as an effective electron transfer rate. We also discussed the non-carbon nanomaterials that are used as alternative supporting components of the electrode for improving the electrochemical properties of biosensors. Conclusion Although several functional nanomaterials have provided the innovative solid substrate for high performances, developing on-site version of biosensor that meets enough sensitivity along with high reproducibility still remains a challenge. In particular, the matrix interference from real samples which seriously affects the biomolecular interaction still remains the most critical issues that need to be solved for practical aspect in the electrochemical biosensor.

Abstract:Electrocatalysis has broad application prospects in the energy conversion and storage, and thus has gradually become a research hotspot over the world.For most electrocatalytic systems, the optimization and improvement of their electrocatalytic performances are usually generated from the reasonable construction of active sites and accurate descriptions of the catalytic mechanism.The continuous enrichment of measurement methodologies can greatly promote the in-depth studies and applications of electrocatalysis.In recent years, the continuous maturity and cross-disciplinary developments of micro-nano (device) processing technologies have provided a new and more sophisticated platform(s) for the study of electrocatalytic materials and processes.Here, aiming at the different directions of electrocatalysis research, this review summarizes the latest progress of micro-nano device technologies in electrocatalysis-related research fields from three perspectives: structure characterizations and accurate measurements, electric field effect regulations and electric transport correlated dynamics.Finally, the application prospects and challenges of micro-nano device technologies in the field of electrocatalysis are prospected.

Abstract:The most commonly used methods to electrodeposit nanomaterials on conductive supports or to obtain electrosynthesis nanomaterials are described. Au, layered double hydroxides (LDHs), metal oxides, and polymers are the classes of compounds taken into account. The electrochemical approach for the synthesis allows one to obtain nanostructures with well-defined morphologies, even without the use of a template, and of variable sizes simply by controlling the experimental synthesis conditions. In fact, parameters such as current density, applied potential (constant, pulsed or ramp) and duration of the synthesis play a key role in determining the shape and size of the resulting nanostructures. This review aims to describe the most recent applications in the field of electrochemical sensors of the considered nanomaterials and special attention is devoted to the analytical figures of merit of the devices.

Abstract:Nanozymes are nanomaterials with enzyme-like catalytic activities. The unique features of nanozymes (such as high stability, low cost, large surface area for bioconjugation, ease of storage, and multi-functionalities) offer unprecedented opportunities for designing electrochemical biosensors. Recent years have witnessed the rapid development of nanozyme-based electrochemical biosensors. To highlight these achievements, this review first discusses the representative nanozymes including peroxidase mimics, oxidase mimics, hydrolase mimics, and superoxide dismutase mimics used in electrochemical biosensors. Then, it summarizes the bioanalytical applications for the detection of various analytes. Finally, current challenges and future research directions are summarized.

Abstract:Electrodeposition is used at the industrial scale to make coatings, membranes, and composites. With better understanding of the nanoscale phenomena associated with the early stage of the process, electrodeposition has potential to be adopted by manufacturers of energy storage devices, advanced electrode materials, fuel cells, carbon dioxide capturing technologies, and advanced sensing electronics. The ability to conduct precise electrochemical measurements using cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, and chronopotentiometry in addition to control of precursor composition and concentration makes electrocrystallization an attractive method to investigate nucleation and early-stage crystal growth. In this article, we review recent findings of nucleation and crystal growth behaviors at the nanoscale, paying close attention to those that deviate from the classical theories in various electrodeposition systems. The review affirms electrodeposition as a valuable method both for gaining new insights into nucleation and crystallization on surfaces and as a low-cost scalable technology for the manufacturing of advanced materials and devices.

Abstract:Biosensors, combining informatics and biotechnology, as an interdisciplinary frontier related to chemistry, biology, physics and electronics, will have broad applications in clinical medicine, food inspection and environment protection. Among them, electrochemical biosensors have been extensively studied and applied, due to the high selectivity, high sensitivity, fast responses and advantages in miniaturization and online detection. A key factor in biosensor development is the immobilization of biomolecules. The progress in nanotechnology brought infinite imaginations and great potentials. Recently, nanomaterials such as nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes, nanoporous materials and mesoporous materials have been increasingly employed to immobilize biocomponents, retaining their bioactivities and meanwhile promoting the effective electron-transfer. This paper reviews the proceedings during the last ten years of nanomaterials with different structures applied in electrochemical biosensors.

Abstract:In recent years, the development of highly sensitive sensors has become a popular research topic. Some functional nanomaterials occupy an important position in the sensing field by virtue of their unique structures and catalytic properties, but there are still problems such as low sensitivity and poor specificity. Single-atom nanomaterials (SANs) show significant advantages in amplifying sensing signals and improving sensor interference resistance due to their high atomic utilization, structural simplicity, and homogeneity. They are expected to achieve high sensitivity and high specificity monitoring by modulating the active sites. In this review, the recent progress on SANs for electrochemical sensing applications was summarized. We first briefly summarize the features and advantages of single-atom catalysts. Then recent advances in the regulation of reaction sites in noble and non-noble metal-based SANs, including the introduction of defects in the carrier, other metal atoms, and ligand atoms, were highlighted. After that, the SANs for the construction of electrochemical, electrochemiluminescent (ECL), and photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensors and their applications in biochemical and environmental analysis were demonstrated. Finally, the future research aspect of SANs-based electrochemical sensing and the challenges of the SANs design and structure-properties revelation were illustrated, giving guidance on sensitive and accurate biosensing toward clinic diagnostic and environmental analysis.

Abstract:Nanomaterials have gained significant attention as a remarkable class of materials due to their unique properties and the fact that they encompass a wide range of samples with at least one dimension ranging from 1 to 100 nm. The deliberate design of nanoparticles enables the achievement of extremely large surface areas. In the field of cost-effective electrochemical devices for energy storage and conversion applications, nanomaterials have emerged as a key area of research. Their exceptional physical and chemical properties have led to extensive investigations aimed at improving the performance and cost-effectiveness of electrochemical devices, including batteries, supercapacitors, and fuel cells. The continuous development and enhancement of these high-performance materials are driven by the demand for enhanced productivity, connectivity, and sustainability at a reduced cost. This review focuses on the electrochemical performance of electrodes, energy storage, and electrochemical sensors (ES) based on nanotechnology. It discusses the application of nanotechnology in electrochemistry for water purification and the fate of substances in water, while also introducing green nanotechnology and cost-effective, high-fidelity product creation through electrochemical methods. The study emphasizes the synthesis of novel nanomaterials, such as metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), and MXenes, with applications in electrochemical devices. Furthermore, it explores the integration of nanostructures with electrochemical systems in economically significant and future applications, along with the challenges faced by nanotechnology-based industries. The paper also explores the interplay between nanomaterials and biosensors, which play a vital role in electrochemical devices. Overall, this review provides a comprehensive overview of the significance of nanomaterials in the development of cost-effective electrochemical devices for energy storage and conversion. It highlights the need for further research in this rapidly evolving field and serves as a valuable resource for researchers and engineers interested in the latest advancements in nanomaterials for electrochemical devices.

Abstract:Previous measurements of cell populations might obscure many important cellular differences, and new strategies for single-cell analyses are urgently needed to re-examine these fundamental biological principles for better diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Electrochemistry is a robust technique for the analysis of single living cells that has the advantages of minor interruption of cellular activity and provides the capability of high spatio-temporal resolution. The achievements of the past thirty years have revealed significant information about the exocytotic events of single cells to elucidate the mechanisms of cellular activity. Currently, the rapid developments of micro/nano-fabrication and optoelectronic technologies drive the development of multifunctional electrodes and novel electrochemical approaches with higher resolution for single cells. In this prospective, three new frontiers in this field, namely, electrochemical microscopy, intracellular analysis and single-cell analysis in a biological system (i.e., neocortex and retina), are reviewed. The unique features and remaining challenges of these techniques are discussed.

Abstract:While model studies with small nanoparticles offer a bridge between applied experiments and theoretical calculations, the intricacies of working with well-defined nanoparticles in electrochemistry pose challenges for experimental researchers. This perspective dives into nanoparticle electrochemistry, provides experimental insights to uncover their intrinsic catalytic activity and draws conclusions about the effects of altering their size, composition, or loading. Our goal is to help uncover unexpected contamination sources and establish a robust experimental methodology, which eliminates external parameters that can overshadow the intrinsic activity of the nanoparticles. Additionally, we explore the experimental difficulties that can be encountered, such as stability issues, and offer strategies to mitigate their impact. From support preparation to electrocatalytic tests, we guide the reader through the entire process, shedding light on potential challenges and crucial experimental details when working with these complex systems.
