Abstract:In order to improve the bit error rate (BER) of multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency diversity multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) system in Nakagami-m channels, the model used Rate-Compatible Punctured Convolution (RCPC) and space-time block code(STBC) at the transmitter, maximum ratio combining (MRC) at the receiver was put forward. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the MIMO-OFDM system in Nakagami-m channels was studied, the expression of BER was given and the average BER upper limit after RCPC encode was further presented. Simulation result shows that the BER performance and the diversity gain of MIMO-OFDM with RCPC encoding achieve much improvement than the system with no RCPC. Owing to the free distance becomes shorter with the increase of code rate, the BER performance and the diversity gain of RCPC encoded MIMO-OFDM decreases a little. © 2006 IEEE.

Abstract:In this paper, complex base band wide band code division multiple access (WCDMA) signal and system models containing their electromagnetic (EM) features in free space are developed. Based on the models and the EM characteristics of user equipment (UE) antennas, the effect of mutual coupling (MC) between the antennas on a WCDMA 2×4 multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system uplink performance, when using Space Time Orthogonal Block Codes (STOB) transmitting and minimum mean square error (MMSE) beam forming receiving techniques, is investigated. Two results are obtained: 1) the MC effect has ability to influence the channel estimation when transmitted antennas are identified; 2) the MC effect has the positive contributions on system SINR gain about 1.2 dB compared with that when the MC effect is not considered.

Abstract:Signal detection for vehicle-to-vehicle and wireless network application has motivated new design for conditions in which channel is time-selective fading. Since the physical layer (PHY) forms the foundation of the communication protocol stack, the performance of this layer affects all high layers of the system stack. Quasi-orthogonal space-time block code (QO-STBC) can provide full rate transmission and partial diversity under low decoding complexity. Previous papers on QO-STBC assume that the channels are slow fading or remain static over the length of the codeword. However, time-selective channels do exist, and in this case, the decoder proposed in Jafarkhani (2001) cannot be used to achieve a proper error performance. In order to mitigate the severe performance degradation, the zero forcing (ZF) and minimum mean square error (MMSE) decoders are employed in this paper. We also propose a zero forcing interference cancellation decision-feedback equalizer (ZF-IC-DFE) and a minimum mean-square error interference cancellation decision-feedback equalizer (MMSE-IC-DFE) via Cholesky factorization of the channel Gram matrix after performing interference cancellation. By feeding back past decisions on previously detected symbols, DFE schemes can achieve an additional performance gain compared to their corresponding linear decoders. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:LoRa is a modulation technology for low power wide area networks (LPWAN) with enormous potential in 5G era. However, the performance of LoRa system deteriorates seriously in fading-channel environments. To tackle this problem, in this paper we introduce multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) configuration employing space-time block coding (STBC) schemes into the LoRa system to formulate an STBC-MIMO LoRa system. Then, we investigate the theoretical performance of the proposed system over Rayleigh fading channels. To this end, we derive the distribution of the decision metric for the demodulator in the proposed system. Based on the above distribution, we propose a closed-form approximate BER expression of the proposed system when perfect and imperfect channel state information (CSI) are considered. Furthermore, we analyze the diversity order and the throughput of the proposed system. The results of the diversity analysis demonstrate that the diversity order of the system in the imperfect CSI scenario with fixed channel estimate error variance is zero. However, in the imperfect CSI scenario with a decreasing channel estimate error variance and the perfect CSI scenario, the system can achieve full diversity. In addition, the results of the throughput analysis show that the throughput of the proposed system is little affected by CSI conditions. Simulation results verify the accuracy of the theoretical analysis and the excellent performance of the proposed system. Due to such superiority, the proposed STBC-MIMO LoRa system can be considered as a good scheme for LPWAN.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel differential space-time block coded spatial modulation (differential STBC-SM) is proposed for uplink multi-user massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications, which combines the concept of differential coding and STBC-SM to enhance the diversity benefits in the absence of the channel state information (CSI). The transmission structure of the proposed system is on a block basis, where each block contains two sub-blocks. More specifically, the first sub-block only conveys amplitude and phase modulation (APM) symbol bits, since its transmit antennas (TAs) obey a pre-designed activation pattern, which do not carry any information bit. For the second sub-block, the input bits are modulated to STBC-SM matrices, which are then differentially coded between two adjacent sub-blocks. Moreover, a novel block-by-block based non-coherent detector is presented. Finally, we derive an upper bound on the average bit error probability (ABEP) by using the moment generating function (MGF). Our simulation results show that the proposed differential STBC-SM transmission structure is able to acquire considerable bit error rate (BER) performance improvements compared to both the conventional differential spatial modulation (DSM) and differential Alamouti schemes.

Abstract:An inclusive scattered propagation multiple input multiple output (MIMO) channel model prototype is proposed for multiplexed non-line-of-sight ultraviolet (UV) optical transmission to fill up this theory blank. Two key difficulties concerning an MIMO UV channel model are resolved in this letter. In order to verify the feasibility of this channel model, 3-D narrow-band channel response is plotted by transmitter elevation angle and receiver spacing to give an intuitive insight into the symmetric channel structure and rank attribute. Spatial correlation is further defined geometrically and discussed compared with capacity behavior. Meanwhile, 2x2 and 4x4 cases are studied to investigate the impacts of practical parameters. Numerical results suggest that spatial correlation determines the capacity behavior and provide instructions for the realistic MIMO UV system design.

Abstract:To overcome the problem that the performance of traditional MIMO-CDMA system would degrade badly in frequency-selective fading channel conditions, a novel interference-free MIMO-CDMA system spread with orthogonal complementary (OC) code is proposed in the paper. The system utilizes a novel transmitter structure, which combines OC code spreading and spatial delay multiplexing technique. Therefore, only simple correlation operation is needed at the receiver to effectively resist interferences caused by multipath propagation effect, and maximum-ratio-combination (MRC) can be employed to further resist channel fading. The proposed system provides higher BER performance and lower hardware complexity, compared with traditional MIMO-CDMA system employing single-code spreading and VBLAST scheme. Mathematical expressions and theoretical analysis of the system are presented. Simulation results validate the perfect anti-interference properties of the proposed system

Abstract:In this contribution, the concept of spatial modulation (SM) is firstly integrated into the structure of space-time block codes (STBC)-aided vertical Bell-labs layered space-time (VBLAST) systems, in order to strike a balanced tradeoff among bit error ratio (BER), spectral efficiency and computational complexity. First of all, in order to enhance the BER performance of STBC-VBLAST, we advocate an effective transmit power allocation (TPA) scheme with negligible implementation costs, while dividing the STBC and VBLAST layers with alleviated interference, so as to facilitate combination with SM. Then, we further utilize the unique structure of SM for enhancing the spectral efficiency of original STBC-VBLAST, wherein the information is conveyed by not only the amplitude/phase modulation (APM) symbols but also the antenna indices. In addition, constellation sets of STBC symbols are specifically designed to be rotated to make full use of the degrees of freedom. Finally, the performance advantages of the above-mentioned structures over traditional STBC-VBLAST are demonstrated by the theoretical derivation of a closed-form expression for the union bound on the bit error probability for various spectral efficiencies, and they are supported by simulation results.

Abstract:In this paper, a new algorithm of MIMO system has been proposed by applying antenna selection into hybrid STBC-VBLAST architecture. It has been confirmed that there is an outstanding performance improvement even for simple receiver with ZF and MMSE decoder. Furthermore, in order to decrease the complexity in MIMO-OFDM systems configured with hybrid STBC-VBLAST, a simplified version of the aforementioned algorithm is proposed, which can be proved to realize antenna selection without significant performance deterioration.

Abstract:This paper investigates optimal transmission of space-time block codes (STBCs) in distributed multiple-input multiple-output (D-MIMO) Rayleigh fading channels. The optimal diversity performance is achieved through transmit power allocation implemented at the receiver based on transmit and receive correlations to minimize the average symbol error rate (SER). Evaluation of SER performance of uncoded STBCs over a generalized distributed antenna (DA) topology is first presented, with exact analytical SER expressions derived for MQAM and MPSK symbols. SER upper bounds are also derived, based on which two criteria for complexity reduced antenna subset selection with sub-optimal power allocation are further proposed, whose performance approaches optimal over correlated D-MIMO channels. Moreover, a novel simplified but close SER approximation scheme is devised to significantly facilitate optimal SER calculation. We continue to thoroughly analyze how the optimal diversity is affected by large scale fading, targeted data rate, antenna correlations and transmit power. Finally, we develop a surprisingly close and useful analogy between open loop STBCs in co-located MIMO and optimal STBCs in D-MIMO with minimum feedback (i.e., n bits for n DAs in Criterion 2 with power allocation scheme 2 which equally allocates power to the selected DAs). Extensive simulation results have been presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of our analysis.

Abstract:A combined space-time block code(STBC) and vertical Belllabs layered space time(V-BLAST) scheme was developed to achieve a good tradeoff between diversity and multiplexing in the downlinks of single user distributed wireless communication systems with grouped antennas. The eigenvalues of the transmit correlation matrix at the transmitter were used for antenna selection with power and rate allocation whih minimizing the upper bound on the symbol error rate(SER).Simulations show that the actual SER performance of the various transmit schemes match well with the theoretical analysis. The scheme can be easily implemented,making it suitable for practical applications.

Abstract:With the increasing demand for Visible Light Communication (VLC) bandwidth, the space-multiplexing technique has been widely utilized to enhance the capability of the VLC system. In this paper, we proposed a novel MIMO detection scheme to decompose the superposed signals in a 2×2 multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) VLC system. With the help of the proposed machine learning scheme, two received optical signals can be separated into two independent parallel signals. By simulation, the unmixing matrix can be quickly converged by iterations. Extensive experiments demonstrate an average BER of 6.191×10−4 is achieved at a bitrate of 750 Mbps over a 1.3-m line of sight (LOS) in the 2×2 MIMO scenario. Finally, to evaluate the performance of the algorithm, the Q factor yielded a gain of about 2.5 dB compared with the traditional Alamouti Space–Time Block Coding (STBC) scheme.

Abstract:Multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) systems have effectively addressed today's high demand for 5G communications and beyond. Further, MIMO-assisted space–time block codes (STBCs) have been shown to enhance the system's performance and provide a complete variety of coherent flat-fading channels. Additionally, the closed-form expression of the probability density function of the summation of correlated Weibull random variables remains unknown. In this work, we investigate the performance analysis of MIMO-STBC-enabled systems subject to the Weibull fading channel. New tight approximate expressions for numerous system performance metrics, e.g., outage probability, average capacity under various rate adaption methods, and average symbol/bit error rate, have been obtained. The Monte Carlo simulation method has corroborated all the presented results.

Abstract:The main objective of a Cooperative Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (CMIMO) system is to improve network throughput and network coverage and save energy. By grouping wireless devices as virtual multi-antenna nodes, it can thus simulate the functions of multi-antenna systems. A Space-Time Block Code (STBC) was proposed to utilize the spatial diversity of MIMO systems to improve the diversity gain and coding gain. In this paper, we proposed a cooperative strategy based on STBC and CMIMO, which is referred to as Space-Time Block Coded Cooperative Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (STBC-CMIMO) to inherit the advantages from both STBC and CMIMO. The theoretical performance analysis for the proposed STBC-CMIMO is presented. The performance advantages of the STBC-CMIMO are also shown by simulations. In the simulations, it is demonstrated that STBC-CMIMO can obtain significant performance compared with the existing CMIMO system.

Abstract:This paper first brings a single receiver multiple-input-multiple-output (SR-MIMO) model to realize the space multiplexing in the visible light communication (VLC) system. The signals from two transmitters are super-imposed in the receiver thus to realize a specially superposed modulation. Depending on the power ratio between two transmitters, various superposed signal structures can be obtained. In order to separate the superposed signal, we design a novel detection algorithm which consists of the successive interference cancellation (SIC) and the look-up table (LUT). Extensive experiments demonstrate that a data rate of 1.5Gbit/s is achieved in the 1.3-m indoor line-of-sight (LOS) scenario with the bit error rates (BERs) are below the forward error correction (FEC) threshold. Abstract:To adapt to different transmission power and distances, we design a rate-compatible transmission protocol to realize different transmission rates for ultraviolet (UV) communication. We have designed ensembles based on low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, incorporating various code lengths and rates working under different channel conditions. Furthermore, the direct sequence spreading technique is adopted to obtain different channel codes working in weaker channel conditions. Through simulating the frame error rate (FER) performance across various signal and background radiation intensities, we obtain a table of switching thresholds for channel coding under distinct channel conditions. Different from that for radio-frequency (RF) communication with only one parameter of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the switching threshold table is constructed based on the combination of two parameters for UV Communication, the signal intensity and background radiation intensity. We also propose adaptive coding with hybrid automatic retransmission requests based on the combination of signal intensity and background intensity. It is verified through simulation that our designed system shows larger throughput under varying channel conditions compared with channel coding with a fixed rate in UV Communication.
