Abstract:In order to break through the inherent limitation of channel capacity, we employ a correlated multiple input multiple output (MIMO) framework over non-line-of-sight (NLOS) ultraviolet (UV) turbulent channels. Subsequently, a method of segmented correlation is proposed to define the spatial correlation of UV MIMO structures. Furthermore, the correlation and channel capacity are studied with varying elevation angle, turbulence intensity, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and number of transceiver in pairs (NTPs). The results show that this correlated MIMO framework can obtain higher channel capacity by reducing the elevation angle of the transceivers or increasing turbulence intensity or NTPs. Moreover, channel capacity increases with the SNR. But at low SNR, a larger gain of channel capacity can be provided. Therefore, this paper develops the capacity of UV turbulent channels and provides a guide for optimal parameter configuration of correlated UV MIMO. Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a 2 × 2 multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless over fiber transmission system. Seamless translation of two orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals on dual optical polarization states into wireless MIMO transmission at 795.5 Mbit/s net data rate is enabled by using digital training-based channel estimation. A net spectral efficiency of 2.55 bit/s/Hz is achieved.

Abstract:An inclusive scattered propagation multiple input multiple output (MIMO) channel model prototype is proposed for multiplexed non-line-of-sight ultraviolet (UV) optical transmission to fill up this theory blank. Two key difficulties concerning an MIMO UV channel model are resolved in this letter. In order to verify the feasibility of this channel model, 3-D narrow-band channel response is plotted by transmitter elevation angle and receiver spacing to give an intuitive insight into the symmetric channel structure and rank attribute. Spatial correlation is further defined geometrically and discussed compared with capacity behavior. Meanwhile, 2x2 and 4x4 cases are studied to investigate the impacts of practical parameters. Numerical results suggest that spatial correlation determines the capacity behavior and provide instructions for the realistic MIMO UV system design.

Abstract:The multi-user Holographic Multiple-Input and Multiple-Output Surface (MU-HMIMOS) paradigm, which is capable of realizing large continuous apertures with minimal power consumption, has been recently considered as an energy-efficient solution for future wireless networks, offering increased flexibility in impacting electromagnetic (EM) wave propagation according to the desired communication, localization, and sensing objectives. The tractable channel modeling in MU-HMIMOS wireless systems is one of the most critical research challenges, mainly due to the coupling effect induced by the excessively large number of closely spaced patch antennas. In this paper, we focus on this challenge for the downlink of multi-user MIMO communications and extend an EM-compliant channel model to multi-user case, which is expressed in the wavenumber domain using the Fourier plane wave approximation. Based on the presented channel model, we investigate the spectral efficiency of maximum-ratio transmission and Zero-Forcing (ZF) precoding schemes. We also introduce a novel hardware efficient ZF precoder, leveraging Neumann series (NS) expansion to replace the required matrix inversion operation, which is very hard to be computed in the conventional way due to the extremely large number of patch antennas in the envisioned MU-HMIMOS communication systems. In comparison with the conventional independent and identical Rayleigh fading channels that ignore antenna coupling effects, the proposed EM-compliant channel model captures the mutual couplings induced by the very small antenna spacing. Our extensive performance evaluation results demonstrate that our theoretical performance expressions approximate sufficiently well the simulated achievable spectral efficiency with the considered linear precoding schemes, even for the highly correlated cases, thus verifying the effectiveness and robustness of the presented analytical framework. In addition, it is verified that the proposed NS-based ZF precoder achieves similar performance to conventional ZF, while requiring lower hardware complexity, thus, providing a hardware efficient solution for practical design of MU-HMIMOS communications systems.

Abstract:Wireless communication using electromagnetic wave carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) has attracted increasing interest in recent years and its potential to increase channel capacity has been explored widely. In this paper, we compare the technique of using uniform linear array consist of circular traveling-wave OAM antennas for multiplexing with the conventional multiple-in-multiple-out (MIMO) communication method and numerical results show that the OAM based MIMO system can increase channel capacity while communication distance is long enough. An equivalent model is proposed to illustrate that the OAM multiplexing system is equivalent to a conventional MIMO system with a larger element spacing, which means OAM waves could decrease the spatial correlation of MIMO channel. In addition, the effects of some system parameters, such as OAM state interval and element spacing, on the capacity advantage of OAM based MIMO are also investigated. Our results reveal that OAM waves are complementary with MIMO method. OAM waves multiplexing is suitable for long-distance line-of-sight (LoS) communications or communications in open area where the multi-path effect is weak and can be used in massive MIMO systems as well.

Abstract:In this paper, we examine the performance of the underwater visible light communication (UVLC) system using On–Off keying (OOK) modulation having a data-rate of 1 Gbps over a variable communication link range. Different transmitter/receiver diversity configurations, viz. Single-input to single-output (SISO), and multiple-input to multiple-output (MIMO) techniques with different line-coding techniques have been used to weaken the effects of weak maritime turbulence, overlapping, and distortion of the signal. Simulation has been done in OptiSystem 19.0 for bit-error-rate (BER) and Q-factor. From the obtained results, it can be depicted that the MIMO UVLC system offers better results with NRZ line-coding technique. In addition, we can also depict that spatial diversity with proper selection of line coding techniques can significantly improve the system's performance. The signal covers link distance up to 613, 605, 600 597, and 590 m and Q-factor 5.94, 5.91, 5.9, 5.88, and 5.67 for 4*4 MIMO with NRZ line coding, 4*4 MIMO Hybrid RZ-NRZ, 4*4 MIMO RZ, 4*4 MIMO with Gaussian and 4*4 MIMO with raised cosine line coding technique respectively for the BER of operating at the wavelength of 450 nm. The NRZ line-coded MIMO UVLC system offers higher reliability and communication link distance as compared to other line coding techniques.

Abstract:An optical signal suffers from irradiance and phase fluctuations when propagating through the free space optical (FSO) turbulence channel, thus resulting in the degradation of the bit error rate (BER) performance. The BER performance can be improved by adopting the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) scheme. In this paper, we propose a coherent binary polarization shift keying (BPOLSK) modulation scheme with MIMO employing maximum ratio combining and equal gain combining diversity techniques to mitigate the turbulence effect. The gamma-gamma statistical channel model is adopted for all the turbulence regimes. The BER performance for the proposed BPOLSK-MIMO FSO link is compared with the single-input single-output and ON-OFF-keying systems by means of computer simulation. The optical power gain is investigated and demonstrated under different turbulence regimes for a number of transmitters/receivers.

Abstract:Although the multi-antenna or so-called multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission is an enabling technology for past generations of wireless communication systems, its application to visible light communication (VLC) still faces a critical challenge due to the strong spatial correlation of VLC channels, which makes it difficult to achieve sufficient spatial multiplexing gain. This paper proposes to use optical intelligent reflecting surfaces (OIRS) to tackle this challenge. Firstly, we characterize the extremely near-field channel condition in the optical frequency range and reveal a peculiar “inter-element interference (IEI) free” property of the OIRS-reflected channel, where the OIRS reflecting elements can be individually configured to align with one pair of transmitter and receiver antennas without causing interference to each other. Next, we characterize the OIRS-assisted MIMO VLC capacities under different power constraints at the transmitter antennas, and then proceed to maximize them by jointly optimizing the OIRS element alignment and transmitter emission power. In particular, we propose two algorithms for the OIRS optimization, namely, location-aided interior-point algorithm and log-det-based alternating optimization algorithm, to balance the performance versus complexity trade-off; while the optimal transmitter emission power is derived in closed form. Numerical results are provided to validate the capacity improvement of OIRS-assisted MIMO VLC against the VLC without OIRS and demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed algorithms compared to baseline schemes.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a novel unequal error protection (UEP) video transmission scheme based on dynamic resource allocation in a MIMO-OFDM system in order to improve the video transmission performance over wideband wireless channels. In this new scheme, a low density parity code (LDPC) is combined with a complexity reduced power reallocation algorithm to utilize the excess powers which margin from the powers necessary to meet the modulation level selected under a certain BER constraint. Furthermore, by taking full advantage of the residual excess powers, unequal error protection on important bits of video streams is provided by the LDPC code. Accordingly, the transmission efficiency and quality are both increased. Simulation results have shown that the proposed scheme may achieve great improvement in both systems with or without perfect channel estimation.

Abstract:The recent concept of beamspace multiple input multiple output (MIMO) can significantly reduce the number of required radio-frequency (RF) chains in millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive MIMO systems without obvious performance loss. However, the fundamental limit of existing beamspace MIMO is that, the number of supported users cannot be larger than the number of RF chains at the same time-frequency resources. To break this fundamental limit, in this paper we propose a new spectrum and energy efficient mmWave transmission scheme that integrates the concept of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) with beamspace MIMO, i.e., beamspace MIMO-NOMA. By using NOMA in beamspace MIMO systems, the number of supported users can be larger than the number of RF chains at the same time-frequency resources. Particularly, the achievable sum rate of the proposed beamspace MIMO-NOMA in a typical mmWave channel model is analyzed, which shows an obvious performance gain compared with the existing beamspace MIMO. Then, a precoding scheme based on the principle of zero-forcing (ZF) is designed to reduce the inter-beam interferences in the beamspace MIMO-NOMA system. Furthermore, to maximize the achievable sum rate, a dynamic power allocation is proposed by solving the joint power optimization problem, which not only includes the intra-beam power optimization, but also considers the inter-beam power optimization. Finally, an iterative optimization algorithm with low complexity is developed to realize the dynamic power allocation. Simulation results show that the proposed beamspace MIMO-NOMA can achieve higher spectrum and energy efficiency compared with existing beamspace MIMO.

Abstract:Ever since the invention of Bell Laboratories Layer Space-Time (BLAST) in mid 1990s, the focus of MIMO research and development has been largely on pushing the limit of spectral efficiency. While massive MIMO technologies laid the foundation of high spectrum efficiency in 5G and beyond, the challenge remains in improving energy efficiency given the increasing complexity of the associated radio systems. With the substantial negative implications of climate change looming ever closer, minimizing energy use is a key dimension of achieving sustainability and is of paramount importance for any future technology. Thus, every aspect of future extreme MIMO system design, implementation, and operation will be scrutinized to maximize energy efficiency. An analysis of the massive MIMO 5G radio energy consumption at different loads leads to qualitative energy efficiency design goals for emerging extreme MIMO systems. Following this, we focus on novel operational and component technology innovations to minimize energy consumption.

Abstract:Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) combined with orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) technique can dramatically increase the achievable rate of visible light communication (VLC) systems. The channel in a VLC system with light-emitting diode (LED) luminaires is generally low-pass, which highly limits the achievable rate of practical VLC systems. This aspect has largely been ignored in the analysis for MIMO-OFDM VLC systems. As wide parts of the bandwidth at higher frequencies are severely attenuated, the choice of the power loading on every frequency bin has a large impact on the achieved bit rate. Thus, in this paper, we propose a two-dimensional water-filling (2D-WF) power allocation algorithm that operates both in frequency and space domains to efficiently improve the rate achieved by MIMO-OFDM VLC systems over low-pass VLC channels. The achievable rates and optimal bandwidths of a MIMO-OFDM VLC system are derived analytically using the proposed 2D-WF power allocation algorithm and five conventional power allocation strategies, including uniform (UF) power allocation, pre-emphasis (PE) power allocation, beamforming (BF) power allocation, and two kinds of one-dimensional water-filling (1D-WF) power allocation. Our simulation results show that the achievable rate of a MIMO-OFDM VLC system in a typical indoor environment can be significantly degraded by the low-pass effect. The proposed 2D-WF power allocation outperforms all other schemes in terms of achievable bit rate.

Abstract:Environment of mobile communication is very complex since the radio wave will not only increase loss with the propagation distance, but also produce multipath effect by the terrain and the obstacles. When the channel adopts MIMO technology, channel capacity is improved without increasing bandwidth and transmitted power. The OFDM technology can effectively deal with the interference between the signal waveform, and it is suitable for the high-speed data transmission multipath environment and fading channel. In this paper, through theoretical research on MIMO-OFDM techniques, we modeled and simulated wireless communication channel to better solve the high-quality transmission problem.

Abstract:Absorption and scattering are traditionally considered as the most important factors to affect the performance of underwater optical wireless communications (UOWC). Recently, the theoretical models from free space optical (FSO) communications are applied to model the underwater turbulence, and the turbulence-induced fading may introduce fluctuations to the light intensity. However, the effect of turbulence on UOWC channels might be different from FSO channels due to the interference from absorption and scattering. In this work, we first introduce the log-normal distribution to represent the weak turbulence. After that, we deduce the average capacity of turbulent buoy-based multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Numerical results demonstrate that turbulence will boost the average capacity under low transmitted signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and reduce the average capacity when the transmitted SNR which is defined as the transmitted power divided by the noise at the receiver is sufficiently high enough. Besides, stronger turbulence exerts more influence on the capacity, and the increasing attenuation length will eliminate the effect of turbulence. Moreover, MIMO could offset the impact of turbulence-induced fading, which indicates that it cannot improve the capacity performance under low SNR but could bring positive effects when SNR becomes high.

Abstract:Beamspace MIMO-NOMA is an effective way to improve spectral efficiency. This paper focuses on a downlink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) transmission scheme for a beamspace multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system. To increase the sum rate, we jointly optimize precoding and power allocation, which presents a non-convex problem. To solve this difficulty, we employ an alternating algorithm to optimize the precoding and power allocation. Regarding the precoding subproblem, we demonstrate that the original optimization problem can be transformed into an unconstrained optimization problem. Drawing inspiration from fraction programming (FP), we reconstruct the problem and derive a closed-form expression of the optimization variable. In addition, we effectively reduce the complexity of precoding by utilizing Neumann series expansion (NSE). For the power allocation subproblem, we adopt a dynamic power allocation scheme that considers both the intra-beam power optimization and the inter-beam power optimization. Simulation results show that the energy efficiency of the proposed beamspace MIMO-NOMA is significantly better than other conventional schemes.

Abstract:Emerging time-sensitive applications such as automated driving, factory automation, and telesurgery have stimulated an increased interest in Ultra-Reliable and Low-Latency Communications (URLLC). Meanwhile, Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) techniques have played a vital role in radio access networks since the 2000s, due to their spatial multiplexing and diversity gains over fading channels. Thus, it is of interest to consider the fundamental performance limits of URLLC operating over MIMO channels. In this letter, we consider this problem in the asymptotic regime of high Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) for short packets involving finite-blocklength codes. In particular, we show that a fundamental tradeoff exists among service capability, latency, and error probability in the high SNR regime. We present a piecewise linear gain conservation equation to characterize this cross-layer tradeoff, which is also validated by extensive numerical results.
