Abstract:The experimental realization of multiple-input single-output (MISO) in visible light communication (VLC) has always been difficult due to dynamic channels, complex alignment, and limited capacity. We designed a quantum dot (QD) fluorescent concentrator combined with power domain multiplexing of a non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) scheme to provide an estimation-free MISO system. The system supports a large detection area of over 4 cm(2) and a sum rate up to 120 Mbps over 2.3-m free space, providing a promising connection for the Internet of things (IoT). The concentrator was further implemented in an underwater environment under insufficient incident power. A record data rate of 120 Mbps has been achieved in a 1.5m underwater MISO system, with a mean bit error rate of 3.24x10(-3), which is below the forward error correction criterion. Abstract:Next-generation visible light communication (VLC) is envisioned to evolve into a high-speed and multi-user system. In this work, a 75-µm single layer quantum dot (QD) micro-LED was fabricated, packaged and used to experimentally demonstrate a 3-meter QAM-OFDMA VLC system affording multiple users with a 1.06-GHz modulation bandwidth. The OFDMA system realized data rates of 1.2 Gbps and 750 Mbps with a BER of 0 and 3.6×10−3 for two independent users with a 1:1 bandwidth ratio, respectively. Additional sub-carrier allocation strategies and scenarios of 2∼6 users have been further evaluated, and all proposed strategies reach the sum-rate of beyond 1.41 Gbps while satisfying the forward error correction (FEC) criteria.

Abstract:In this paper, a wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) visible light communication (VLC) system based on the perovskite quantum dots (QDs) with two different fluorescence wavelengths is demonstrated. This system consists of a transmitter, free space channel and a receiver. The NRZ-OOK (non-return-zero on-off-keying) signals are transmitted in this channel to achieve WDM visible light communication at a transmission distance of 60 cm, with a maximum transmission capacity of 100 Mbps in the field of view of 80°. In addition, computational temporal ghost imaging (CTGI) algorithm is used to reduce the bit error rate (BER) of the received signals and improve maximum transmission angle to 120°. The proposed WDM system paves the way for visible light communication in free space.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a 2 x 2 imaging multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) Ny-quist single carrier visible light communication (VLC) system based on spectral efficient 64/32-ary quadrature amplitude modulation, as well as pre- and post-equalizations. Two commercially available red-green-blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with 3 dB bandwidth of 10 MHz and two avalanche photodiodes with 3 dB bandwidth of 100 MHz are employed. Due to the limited experiment condition, three different colors/wavelengths are transmitted separately. The achieved data rates of red, green, and blue LED chips are 1.5, 1.25, and 1.25 Gb/s, respectively. The resulting bit error ratios are below the 7% pre-forward error correction limit of 3.8 x 10(-3) after 75 cm indoor transmission. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first experimental investigation of imaging MIMO system, and it is the highest data rate ever achieved in MIMO VLC system.

Abstract:Optical Wireless Communication (OWC) is a promising way in future 6G network. LiFi and Visible Light Communication (VLC) have been gaining more and more attention in the past decades. Besides, ultraviolet (UV) light is also considered for an OWC system. Deep UV wavelength is preferred to support solar-blind and high information security OWC links. This paper summarizes the recent development in UVC OWC and reports a high-speed deep UV OWC link.

Abstract:We demonstrated a high-speed 1x2 single-input and multiple-output (SIMO) diffuse-line-of-sight (diffuse-LOS) ultraviolet-C (UVC) solar-blind communication link over a distance of 5 meters. To approach the Shannon limit and improve the spectral efficiency, we implemented probabilistically shaped discrete multitone modulation. As compared to a single-input and single-output (SISO) counterpart, we observed significant improvement in the SIMO link in terms of the angle of view of the receiver and the immunity to emulated weather condition. A wide angle of view of +/- 9 degrees is achieved in the SIMO system, with up to a 1.09-Gbit/s achievable information rate (AIR) and a minimum value of 0.24 Gbit/s. Moreover, the bit error rate of the SIMO link in emulated foggy conditions is lowered significantly when compared to that of the SISO link. This work highlights the practicality of UVC communication over realistic distances and in turbulent environments to fill the research gap in high-speed, solar-blind communication. Abstract:This work proposes a high-bandwidth white-light system consisting of a blue gallium nitride (GaN) micro-LED (μLED) exciting yellow-emitting CsPbBr1.8I1.2 perovskite quantum dots (YQDs) for high-speed real-time visible light communication (VLC). The packaged 80 μm × 80 μm blue-emitting μLED has a modulation bandwidth of ∼160 MHz and a peak emission wavelength of ∼445 nm. The achievable bandwidth of the white-light system is up to 85 MHz in the absence of filters and equalization technology. Meanwhile, the bandwidth of the YQDs as a color converter is as high as 73 MHz with the blue GaN μLED as the pump source. A maximum data rate of 300 Mbps can be achieved by taking advantage of the high bandwidth of the white-light system using the non-return-to-zero on-off keying (NRZ-OOK) modulation scheme. The resultant bit-error rate is 2.0 × 10-3, well beneath the forward error correction criterion of 3.8 × 10-3 required for error-free data transmission. In addition, the YQDs which we proposed as a color converter possess high stability for VLC. After half a year, the achievable bandwidths of the white-light system and the YQDs are still up to 83 and 70 MHz, respectively. This study provides the direction of developing high-bandwidth white-light system for both high-efficiency solid-state lighting and high-speed VLC.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a high-speed 2 × 2 non-imaging multiple-input multiple-output nyquist single carrier visible light communication system. Two commercially available blue light emitting diodes with 3 dB electrical bandwidth of 10 MHz and two avalanche photo diodes with 3 dB electrical bandwidth of 100 MHz are used as transmitters and receivers, respectively. A frequency domain equalization method based on two pairs of time-multiplexed training symbols is proposed, which allows de-multiplexing and post-equalization simultaneously processing in one step. Frequency domain averaging and time-domain averaging are also implemented and analyzed in this paper. In this demonstration, the overall data rate is 500 Mb/s. The measured bit error rates for two receivers are both below the 7% pre-forward-error-correction threshold of 3.8 ×10-3 after 40 cm free-air transmission.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a high-speed 2×2 MIMO real-time VLC system based on 64QAM-Discrete Multi-Tone (64QAM-DMT) modulation. The system was achieved by utilizing field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) and silicon substrate LEDs. The effect of attenuation of the attenuator in transmitter and receiver, the aperture diameter of the received signal, code rate and different modulation order have been investigated in our experiment. The experimental results show that our real-time VLC system can transmit over 2m distance for an overall 5Gb/s successfully.

Abstract:Visible Light Communication (VLC) has received more and more attention in recent years. In this paper, we propose a novel configuration of unidirectional subcarrier multiplexing (SCM) -wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) -VLC system adopting quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation. Based on this configuration, we successfully demonstrate a 3x1 multiple-input single-output (MISO) OFDM-VLC transmission experiment using three blue phosphor LEDs. The transmission distance can be as long as 140cm. We also demonstrate an 800-Mb/s MISO SCM-WDM VLC transmission experiment based on RGB-LED with 66-cm transmission distance. In the two experiments, pre-equalization and post-equalization both are implemented to compensate for the poor frequency response of LEDs. And the properties of EVM and BER in all channels are measured and analysed.

Abstract:We have proposed a novel hybrid software and hardware equalization scheme based on digital zero-padding pre-equalization and differential reception. We have experimental demonstrated a red LED based visible light communication system over 1-meter free space transmission with the measured BER below 7% FEC threshold. The signal is QAM-DMT modulated and the modulation level is varying from 32QAM to 128QAM. By applying the proposed hybrid scheme the measured maximum bit rate can be improved from 2.32Gb/s to 2.59Gb/s. And the highest modulation order is enhanced from 64QAM to 128QAM. Our experimental results clearly validate the feasibility of the scheme in future high-speed visible light communication system.
