Abstract:Different from linear block codes that may use one single generator matrix for different channel conditions, polar codes have different generator matrices for different channel conditions. Few papers investigated polar codes from the view of different distance spectrum associated with different generator matrices. Successive cancellation list (SCL) decoding was proposed to evaluate the distance spectrum of polar codes. However, the large memory requirement of SCL decoding using a large number of survival paths can be beyond the memory constraint of normal computers. One practical method to evaluate the distance spectrum of polar codes with SCL decoding was implemented with the aid of hard disk to store the immediately generated data. In this paper, we modify the algorithm of SCL decoding proposed by Tal and Vardy to largely reduce the time complexity and the required space in hard disk. With this method, we further investigate the distance spectrum of polar codes with length N = 128 and N = 256, respectively.

Abstract:Deploying polar codes in ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) has received tremendous attention in both academia and industry. However, the state of the art polar codes decoders, e.g., successive cancellation (SC) and successive cancellation list (SCL) decoder, involve strong data dependencies and suffer from huge decoding delay. This contradicts the low-latency requirement in URLLC. To address this issue, this paper appeals to parallel computing and proposes an adaptive ordered statistic decoder (OSD). Capitalizing on a novel codeword searching metric, the proposed decoder proves to be hardware-friendly and can adaptively rule out the unpromising codewords, thus reducing the latency significantly. Numerical results show that the adaptive OSD outperforms the conventional decoders in terms of block error rate (BLER) and decoding latency.
Hybrid Parity-Check and CRC Aided SCL Decoding for Polar Codes.

Abstract:Polar codes under cyclic redundancy check-aided successive cancellation list (CA-SCL) decoding can outperform the turbo codes and the LDPC codes at the cost of high complexity and decoding delay. In order to reduce the decoding complexity, in this paper we propose a hybrid parity-check and CRC aided SCL decoding scheme for polar codes. Simulation results under the binary input additive white Gaussian noise channels (BI-AWGNs) show that, the proposed approach successfully provides over 20% complexity reduction, and 0.2dB performance gain over the traditional CA-SCL scheme with short codeword length at the block error probability (BLER) of 10-2.

In particular, we first propose a novel codeword searching metric which proves to be hardware-friendly, and an adaptive OSD algorithm is then developed to adaptively rule out the unpromising codewords, thus significantly reducing the latency. Secondly, to further reduce the computational complexity of the proposed algorithm, we decompose the current code sequence into several independent subcodes, and by handling these subcodes with concatenated adaptive OSDs, a good trade-off between decoding latency and complexity can be achieved. Performance Evaluation on Polar Codes in High Mobility Scenarios

Abstract:As a critical scenario in 5G wireless system, high speed railway (HSR) is deployed widely around the world. However, implementing 5G in HSR scenarios remains a challenge as high speed makes the channel doubly selective. Nevertheless, polar codes, as the first provably capacity-achieving codes with low encoding and decoding complexity appear to be a promising coding strategy to tackle this problem. To the best of our knowledge, although polar codes have been studied extensively in theoretical issues, the performance of polar codes in high mobility scenarios, i.e., HSR, has not been investigated before. To give guidance on practical application of polar codes in HSR scenario, we model the channel with doubly selective feature based on 3GPP standard, and implement polar codes in such channel to get the performance evaluation compared with polar codes in AWGN channel. Numerical results show that polar codes with short block-length and large list size are preferable in high speed mobility scenarios.

Abstract:Polar code in channel coding schemes is a research hotspot in 5G communication field.Polar code is susceptible to error propagation under successive cancellation decoding,and the performance of the code at short and medium block lengths is not ideal.For the problems,the performance difference between systematic polar code and non-systematic polar code was studied under various simulation conditions.Simulation results demonstrate that systematic polar code has advantage over non-systematic polar code in bit error rate performance,and the former are more robust against error propagation than the latter under successive cancellation decoding.The above results are considerable importance from the theoretical values in 5G communication and performance optimization of polar code.

Abstract:In this paper, the performance of state of the art decoding methods of polar codes, such as the SC (Successive Cancellation), BP (belief propagation), LP (Linear Programming), LSC(List Successive Cancellation) and ML(Maximum Likelihood) decoding, over different binary-input discrete memoryless channels (B-DMCs) are presented. Simulation results indicate that decoding algorithms of polar codes have the performances of the estimated bit error rate (BER) below the order of 10-5. In addition, we came to the conclusion that BP algorithm outperforms SC at the cost of computational complexity. The performance of LP decoder is better than BP and the complexity is less than BP scheme, however, it can only be used in binary erasure channels (BECs). ML decoder has the best performance, but its high complexity makes it act as a reference to reveal the gap between ML and other algorithms. In order to remedy the performance deficiencies without any significant increase in decoding complexity, we further study the concatenated polar codes-the polar-LDPC(Low Density Parity Check) concatenation scheme, which is substantially outperforms ML decoding. What's more, the concatenated Polar-LDPC codes can remedy the error floor of LDPC codes. We firmly believed that the concatenated scheme of polar-LDPC would be a prominent technique in 5G (5th-generation) to support the more reliable transmission demand.

Abstract:Polar codes are of great interest since they are the first provably capacity-achieving forward error correction codes. To improve throughput and to reduce decoding latency of polar decoders, maximum likelihood (ML) decoding units are used by successive cancellation list (SCL) decoders as well as successive cancellation (SC) decoders. This paper proposes an approximate ML (AML) decoding unit for SCL decoders first. In particular, we investigate the distribution of frozen bits of polar codes designed for both the binary erasure and additive white Gaussian noise channels, and take advantage of the distribution to reduce the complexity of the AML decoding unit, improving the area efficiency of SCL decoders. Furthermore, a multi-mode SCL decoder with variable list sizes and parallelism is proposed. If high throughput or small latency is required, the decoder decodes multiple received codewords in parallel with a small list size. However, if error performance is of higher priority, the multi-mode decoder switches to a serial mode with a bigger list size. Therefore, the multi-mode SCL decoder provides a flexible tradeoff between latency, throughput and error performance, and adapts to different throughput and latency requirements at the expense of small overhead. Hardware implementation and synthesis results show that our polar decoders not only have a better area efficiency but also easily adapt to different communication channels and applications.

An Asymmetric Adaptive SCL Decoder Hardware for Ultra-Low-Error-Rate Polar Codes

Abstract:In theory, Polar codes do not exhibit an error floor under successive-cancellation (SC) decoding. In practice, frame error rate (FER) down to $10^{-12}$ has not been reported with a real SC list (SCL) decoder hardware. This paper presents an asymmetric adaptive SCL (A2SCL) decoder, implemented in real hardware, for high-throughput and ultra-reliable communications. We propose to concatenate multiple SC decoders with an SCL decoder, in which the numbers of SC/SCL decoders are balanced with respect to their area and latency. In addition, a novel unequal-quantization technique is adopted. The two optimizations are crucial for improving SCL throughput within limited chip area. As an application, we build a link-level FPGA emulation platform to measure ultra-low FERs of 3GPP NR Polar codes (with parity-check and CRC bits). It is flexible to support all list sizes up to $8$, code lengths up to $1024$ and arbitrary code rates. With the proposed hardware, decoding speed is 7000 times faster than a CPU core. For the first time, FER as low as $10^{-12}$ is measured and quantization effect is analyzed.

Reduced-Complexity SCL Decoding of Multi-CRC-Aided Polar Codes

Abstract:Cyclic redundancy check (CRC) aided polar codes are capable of achieving better performance than low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes under the successive cancelation list (SCL) decoding scheme. However, the SCL decoding scheme suffers from very high space and time complexities. Especially, the high space complexity is a major concern for adopting polar codes in modern mobile communication standards. In this paper, we propose a novel reduced-complexity successive cancelation list (R-SCL) decoding scheme which is effective to reduce the space complexity. Simulation results show that, with a (2048, 1024) CRC-aided polar code, the R-SCL decoders with 25% reduction of space complexity and 8% reduction of time complexity can still achieve almost the same performance levels as those decoded by SCL decoders. To further reduce the complexity, we propose a multi-CRC coding scheme for polar codes. Simulation results show that, with a (16384, 8192) multi-CRC-aided polar code, a R-SCL decoder with about 85% reduction of space complexity and 20% reduction of time complexity results in a worst performance loss of only 0.04dB.
Adaptive Perturbation Enhanced SCL Decoder for Polar Codes

Abstract:For polar codes, successive cancellation list (SCL) decoding algorithm significantly improves finite-length performance compared to SC decoding. SCL-flip decoding can further enhance the performance but the gain diminishes as code length increases, due to the difficulty in locating the first error bit position. In this work, we introduce an SCL-perturbation decoding algorithm to address this issue. A basic version of the algorithm introduces small random perturbations to the received symbols before each SCL decoding attempt, and exhibits non-diminishing gain at large block lengths. Its enhanced version adaptively performs random perturbations or directional perturbation on each received symbol according to previous decoding results, and managed to correct more errors with fewer decoding attempts. Extensive simulation results demonstrate stable gains across various code rates, lengths and list sizes. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first SCL enhancement with non-diminishing gains as code length increases, and achieves unprecedented efficiency. With only one additional SCL-$L$ decoding attempt (in total two), the proposed algorithm achieves SCL-$2L$-equivalent performance. Since the gain is obtained without increasing list size, the algorithm is best suited for hardware implementation.

Abstract:Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes are applied into ultraviolet (UV) communication system. In this paper, LU decomposition algorithm is adopted as the channel coding method. Simulations are conducted to compare the performance of different LDPC decoding algorithms in UV communication system. The results show that the belief propagation (BP) based UV system has a better bit error ratio (BER) performance than the one with the bit flipping (BF) decoding algorithm. Moreover, communication system performance trade-offs among transmission distance, path loss, frame length and BER are studied.

Abstract:Abstract One of the vital entity of any communication systems is Channel coding, which leads to the design of high performance codes for future wireless systems having low complexity encoder and decoder design. These systems will have a requirement of operating in highly reliable conditions, maximum throughput, and low and high code rates and to work with short and long information messages. Polar codes are one of the promising error correcting channel codes that can be used in these situations to obtain maximum throughput and coding gain in a communication systems because of their capacity approaching performance and finds interests in Satellite communication and 4G/5G services. These codes uses the concept of channel polarization to be constructed. The work proposed in this paper focusses on the Bit Error Rate evaluation and analysis of the Polar codes using traditional approach and Deep learning approach. The feedforward deep learning networks using different activation functions were used for the Deep learning approach. The Successive Cancellation algorithm and its variant using List decoding were used as traditional decoding methodology. The results obtained using Deep learning approach were satisfactory and was matching as per the traditional decoding.

Abstract:Polar codes under successive cancelation list (SCL) decoding are capable of achieving almost the same or better performance than turbo codes or low density parity-check codes with the help of single cyclic redundancy check (CRC). This decoding scheme, however, suffers from very high complexity with long delay and large memory space. Motivated by this research problem, we propose a novel coding scheme called multi-CRC polar code for significant reduction of memory size and decoding delay but with negligible performance loss. Our analysis and simulation have shown that about half reduction of memory size and decoding delay can be achieved in SCL decoding. We also apply this scheme to hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) system to aid retransmission and show that the throughput of multi-CRC polar code is higher than that of the single-CRC one.
Sparsely Pre-transformed Polar Codes for Low-Latency SCL Decoding

Abstract:Deep polar codes, employing multi-layered polar kernel pre-transforms in series, are recently introduced variants of pre-transformed polar codes. These codes have demonstrated the ability to reduce the number of minimum weight codewords, thereby closely achieving finite-block length capacity with successive cancellation list (SCL) decoders in certain scenarios. However, when the list size of the SCL decoder is small, which is crucial for low-latency communication applications, the reduction in the number of minimum weight codewords does not necessarily improve decoding performance. To address this limitation, we propose an alternative pre-transform technique to enhance the suitability of polar codes for SCL decoders with practical list sizes. Leveraging the fact that the SCL decoding error event set can be decomposed into two exclusive error event sets, our approach applies two different types of pre-transformations, each targeting the reduction of one of the two error event sets. Extensive simulation results under various block lengths and code rates have demonstrated that our codes consistently outperform all existing state-of-the-art pre-transformed polar codes, including CRC-aided polar codes and polarization-adjusted convolutional codes, when decoded using SCL decoders with small list sizes.

Improving Polar-Coded SCMA System by Information Coupling and Parity Check

Abstract:In this paper, the uplink information-coupled polar-coded sparse code multiple access (PC-SCMA) system is proposed. For this system, we first design the encoding method of systematic joint parity check and CRC-aided (PCCA) polar code. Using the systematic PCCA-polar code as base code, the partially information-coupled (PIC) polar code is constructed. Then, a joint iterative detection and successive cancellation list (SCL)-decoding receiver is proposed for the PC-SCMA system. For the receiver, the coupled polar decoder's extrinsic messages are calculated by the Bayes rule and soft cancellation (SCAN) algorithm. Based on the extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) idea, the PIC PCCA-polar code is optimized. Simulation results demonstrate that the PIC PCCA-PC-SCMA system outperforms the other polar (or LDPC) coded SCMA systems at various code rates and channel configurations. Additionally, compared with an uncoupled PC-SCMA system with SCL decoder, the complexity of PIC PCCA-PC-SCMA is reduced at a high Eb/N0.

Abstract:In the context of the high-speed development of 5G communications, high-performance decoding schemes for polar codes are a hot spot in channel coding research. Shift pruning successive cancellation list (SP-SCL) decoding aims to recover the correct path by shift pruning in the extra SCL decoding. However, the current SP-SCL decoding is inflexible in determining the shift positions. In this paper, a flexible shift pruning SCL (FSP-SCL) decoding is proposed. Firstly, the reasons for movement and the eliminated states of the correct path are analyzed in detail using the path metric range (PMR), and on this basis, the validity of the method adopted in this paper for determining the shift priority of the information bits is verified. Secondly, the FSP-SCL decoding proposes two methods for determining the shift positions. One is the log-likelihood ratio (LLR) threshold method, which compares the LLR values of the eliminated paths on the shift bit with the corresponding LLR threshold to determine the shift positions. The other is the path distance method. It combines the minimum distance between the eliminated paths and the received vector with the path metrics to determine the shift positions. Both methods are more flexible and practical, as they can calculate the corresponding shift positions online based on a specific shift bit, avoiding the high complexity caused by the simulation method. Finally, this paper designs various experimental schemes to verify the decoding performance of the FSP-SCL. The experimental results show that in terms of error-correction performance, the LLR threshold-based FSP-SCL (FSPL (LLR threshold)) decoding, the path distance-based FSP-SCL (FSPL (path distance)) decoding and the existing SP-SCL decoding are roughly equal overall. In terms of decoding complexity, FSPL (LLR threshold) decoding is slightly better than FSPL (path distance) decoding, and the decoding complexity of both is lower than that of SP-SCL decoding, with the difference being more pronounced in the medium to high SNR regions.

Abstract:Channel polarization and Polar code are widely considered as major breakthroughs in coding theory because they have shown promising features for future wireless standards. The main drawbacks of Polar code are high-latency in decoding hardware, and unimpressive error-correction performance in case limited code-length is implemented. These two disadvantages limit implementation of Polar code in low-throughput wireless communication systems. In this paper, we propose a low-complexity low-latency hardware architecture for the soft-decision compact (16,11) Systematic Successive Cancellation Polar Decoder (S-SCD). Experimental results has shown that the latency of the proposed S-SCD improves 3.75 times and 2.75 times compared with conventional and 2b-SC architectures. Besides, it has also shown a better BER/FER performance compared with RS(15,11) code, which is applied widely in current VLC-based systems.

Abstract:Polar codes are a class of capacity achieving error correcting codes that has been recently selected for the next generation of wireless communication standards (5G). Polar code decoding algorithms have evolved in various directions, striking different balances between error-correction performance, speed and complexity. Successive-cancellation list (SCL) and its incarnations constitute a powerful, well-studied set of algorithms, in constant improvement. At the same time, different implementation approaches provide a wide range of area occupations and latency results. 5G puts a focus on improved error-correction performance, high throughput and low power consumption: a comprehensive study considering all these metrics is currently lacking in literature. In this work, we evaluate SCL-based decoding algorithms in terms of error-correction performance and compare them to low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. Moreover, we consider various decoder implementations, for both polar and LDPC codes, and compare their area occupation and power and energy consumption when targeting short code lengths and rates. Our work shows that among SCL-based decoders, the partitioned SCL (PSCL) provides the lowest area occupation and power consumption, whereas fast simplified SCL (Fast-SSCL) yields the lowest energy consumption. Compared to LDPC decoder architectures, different SCL implementations occupy up to 17.1x less area, dissipate up to 7.35x less power, and up to 26x less energy.

Abstract:A heuristic construction of polar codes for successive cancellation list (SCL) decoding with a given list size is proposed to balance the trade-off between performance measured in frame error rate (FER) and decoding complexity. Furthermore, a construction based on dynamically frozen bits with constraints among the "low weight bits" (LWB) is presented. Simulation results show that the LWB-polar codes outperform the CRC-polar codes and the eBCH-polar codes under SCL decoding.
