Abstract:In this paper, we present a novel hybrid precoding scheme, named group-and-codebook based two-timescale hybrid precoding (GC-THP), for reducing complexity in millimeter wave massive MIMO systems. The scheme clusters users into groups based on their statistical similarity and selects analog beams from a codebook with orthogonal beams. The base station time-shares among multiple analog precoders, each serving a subset of user groups, for fairness. At the slow timescale, the analog precoders, together with their corresponding group scheduling vectors and time-sharing factors, are jointly optimized, while at the fast timescale, short-term user scheduling and digital precoding are performed for a given analog precoder and its associated group scheduling vector. The proposed scheme employs beam-domain channel statistics with reduced dimension to optimize the proportional fairness utility. By applying user grouping and codebook based analog precoding, the proposed scheme significantly reduces complexity while retaining high performance levels. Moreover, the implementation complexity is tunable by adjusting the codebook size and the number of user groups, allowing for flexible performance-complexity tradeoffs. Simulation results confirm a superior performance-complexity tradeoff for the proposed GC-THP in comparison to the existing hybrid precoding schemes.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the problem of hybrid precoding and combining for wideband millimeter wave (mmWave) and sub-terahertz (THz) MIMO-OFDM systems with beam squint effects. In the presence of the beam squint effect, the conventional spatially sparse precoding-based hybrid precoding method which approximates the optimal precoder/combiner with a set of array response vectors suffers severe performance degradation. To address this difficulty, we propose a new set of basis vectors to approximate the optimal precoder/combiner. Each new basis vector is devised to form a radiation pattern with a wide beam to cover the squinted beam directions caused by different frequencies. Simulation results show that the proposed method can effectively alleviate the beam squint effect and achieve a substantial performance improvement over the existing state-of-the-art hybrid precoding method.

Abstract:Hybrid Transmit Precoding (TPC) is one of the most compelling solutions for millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple output (MIMO) systems. However, most attention has been focused on narrow-band scenarios. Hence, we dedicate our efforts to the design of hybrid TPC for wideband mmWave MIMO systems, where the beam squint dramatically affects the system performance. We firstly show that the channel matrices of the different subcarriers possess distinct subspaces in case of high bandwidths, hence traditional hybrid TPC schemes suffer from an eroded performance. Therefore, we propose novel hybrid TPC schemes exploiting the full channel state information (CSI), which project all frequencies to the central frequency and construct the common analog TPC matrix for all subcarriers. Moreover, we propose several low-complexity array-vector based hybrid TPC schemes. The high-complexity manifold optimization based hybrid TPC method and the fully digital TPC operating with and without considering beam squint are provided as benchmarks. Our extensive numerical simulations show that the proposed hybrid TPC schemes are capable of achieving similar performance to the excessive-complexity fully digital TPC, when the bandwidth tends to 0.5 GHz and always outperform the traditional hybrid TPC schemes.

Abstract:Hybrid analog/digital precoding has attracted growing attention for millimeter wave (mmWave) communications, since it can support multi-stream data transmission with limited hardware cost. A main challenge in implementing hybrid precoding is that the channels will exhibit frequency-selective fading due to the large bandwidth. To this end, we propose a practical hybrid precoding scheme with finite-resolution phase shifters by leveraging the correlation among the subchannels. Furthermore, we utilize the sparse feature of the mmWave channels to design a low-complexity algorithm to realize the proposed hybrid precoding, which can avoid the complication of the high-dimensionality eigenvalue decomposition. Simulation results show that the proposed hybrid precoding can approach the performance of unconstrained fully-digital precoding but with low hardware cost and computational complexity.

Abstract:Considering the non-convexity of hybrid precoding and the hardware constraints of practical systems, a hybrid precoding architecture, which combines limited-resolution overlapped phase shifter networks with lens array, is investigated. The analogy part is a beam selection network composed of overlapped low-resolution phase shifter networks. In particular, in the proposed hybrid precoding algorithm, the analog precoding improves array gain by utilizing the quantization beam alignment method, whereas the digital precoding schemes multiplexing gain by adopting a Wiener Filter precoding scheme with a minimum mean square error criterion. Finally, in the sparse scattering millimeter-wave channel for the uniform linear array, the proposed method is compared with the existing scheme by computer simulation by using the ideal channel state information and the non-ideal channel state information. It is concluded that the proposed scheme performs better in low signal-to-noise regions and can achieve a good compromise between system performance and hardware complexity.

Abstract:This paper investigates the hybrid precoding design for millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple- output(MIMO) systems with finite alphabet inputs. The precoding problem is a joint optimization of analog and digital precoders,and it imposes nonconvex constant modulus constraints on the analog precoder. We treat this problem as a matrix factorization problem with constant modulus constraints. The main contributions of our work are listed as follows: First, we propose sufficient and necessary conditions for hybrid precoding schemes to realize any unconstrained optimal precoders exactly when the number of data streams is equal to the number of radio frequency chains. Second, we show that the power constraint in the hybrid precoding problem can be removed without loss of optimality. Third, we present a trust region Newton method to solve our problem using gradient and Hessian information, and the proposed algorithm converges to a stationary point satisfying the first and second order necessary optimality conditions. Several numerical examples are provided to show that the proposed algorithm outperforms existing hybrid precoding algorithms.

Abstract:In millimeter wave (mmWave) systems, antenna architecture limitations make it difficult to apply conventional fully digital precoding techniques but call for low cost analog radio-frequency (RF) and digital baseband hybrid precoding methods. This paper investigates joint RF-baseband hybrid precoding for the downlink of multiuser multi-antenna mmWave systems with a limited number of RF chains. Two performance measures, maximizing the spectral efficiency and the energy efficiency of the system, are considered. We propose a codebook based RF precoding design and obtain the channel state information via a beam sweep procedure. Via the codebook based design, the original system is transformed into a virtual multiuser downlink system with the RF chain constraint. Consequently, we are able to simplify the complicated hybrid precoding optimization problems to joint codeword selection and precoder design (JWSPD) problems. Then, we propose efficient methods to address the JWSPD problems and jointly optimize the RF and baseband precoders under the two performance measures. Finally, extensive numerical results are provided to validate the effectiveness of the proposed hybrid precoders.

Abstract:In millimeter wave (mmWave) massive MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) systems, it is difficult to apply conventional digital precoding techniques due to hardware constraints. Fortunately, the hybrid precoding can be utilized to reduce power consumption and high costs. In this paper, a codebook-based hybrid precoding scheme for downlink multiuser mmWave massive MIMO systems is proposed. Our main idea is that the analog and digital precoders are designed separately to maximize the achievable sum rate. In the analog domain, we take the potential multiuser conflict and angular domain of channel matrix into consideration and propose an efficient conflicting-aware (CA) beam-column selection method to obtain a discrete Fourier transform (DFT) codebook-based analog precoder. According to the CA method, all users are classified into two groups, i.e., conflicting users (CUs) and non-conflicting users (NCUs). Different criteria of beam-column selection are applied for the two user groups. Then, zero-forcing (ZF) digital precoder is directly used in the digital domain. Simulation results illustrate that our proposed algorithm which has low complexity achieves satisfactory SR performance, which approaches that of the full digital precoding (the upper bound) and outperforms other existing hybrid algorithms.

Abstract:This paper investigates the hybrid precoding design for millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with finite-alphabet inputs. The precoding problem is a joint optimization of analog and digital precoders, and we treat it as a matrix factorization problem with power and constant modulus constraints. Our work presents three main contributions: First, we present a sufficient condition and a necessary condition for hybrid precoding schemes to realize unconstrained optimal precoders exactly when the number of data streams Ns satisfies Ns = minfrank(H);Nrfg, where H represents the channel matrix and Nrf is the number of radio frequency (RF) chains. Second, we show that the coupled power constraint in our matrix factorization problem can be removed without loss of optimality. Third, we propose a Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno (BFGS)-based algorithm to solve our matrix factorization problem using gradient and Hessian information. Several numerical results are provided to show that our proposed algorithm outperforms existing hybrid precoding algorithms.

Abstract:The focus of this paper is on multi-user MIMO transmissions for millimeter wave systems with a hybrid precoding architecture at the base-station. To enable multi-user transmissions, the base-station uses a cell-specific codebook of beamforming vectors over an initial beam alignment phase. Each user uses a user-specific codebook of beamforming vectors to learn the top-P (where P >= 1) beam pairs in terms of the observed SNR in a single-user setting. The top-P beam indices along with their SNRs are fed back from each user and the base-station leverages this information to generate beam weights for simultaneous transmissions. A typical method to generate the beam weights is to use only the best beam for each user and either steer energy along this beam, or to utilize this information to reduce multi-user interference. The other beams are used as fall back options to address blockage or mobility. Such an approach completely discards information learned about the channel condition(s) even though each user feeds back this information. With this background, this work develops an advanced directional precoding structure for simultaneous transmissions at the cost of an additional marginal feedback overhead. This construction relies on three main innovations: 1) Additional feedback to allow the base-station to reconstruct a rank-P approximation of the channel matrix between it and each user, 2) A zeroforcing structure that leverages this information to combat multi-user interference by remaining agnostic of the receiver beam knowledge in the precoder design, and 3) A hybrid precoding architecture that allows both amplitude and phase control at low-complexity and cost to allow the implementation of the zeroforcing structure. Numerical studies show that the proposed scheme results in a significant sum rate performance improvement over naive schemes even with a coarse initial beam alignment codebook.

Abstract:Large-scale antenna arrays which provide high beamforming gain are commonly used to combat the serious path-loss in millimeter wave (mmwave) systems. Traditionally, the beamforming is completely implemented at the baseband or the digital domain, which, however, causes high hardware cost and power consumption. The hybrid precoding method which can effectively avoids these problems is, therefore, more attractive. However, the design of hybrid precoder is challenging due to the constant modules of phase shifters. To solve this problem, we propose a novel hybrid precoding approach from the perspective of geometric construction in this paper. The new method can significantly reduce the number of RF chains meanwhile still achieve an almost optimal performance in terms of sum rate. The proposed algorithm is compared with the popular orthogonal matching pursuit algorithm (OMP) via numerical simulations, and shows that our proposal can increase the system spectral efficiency with reduced computational complexity.

Abstract:Hybrid precoding provides a tradeoff between spectral efficiency and power consumption in millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. In this paper, we investigate the partially-connected hybrid precoding design for mmWave MIMO broadcast channels with finite alphabet inputs. To enhance the spectral efficiency, a new algorithm is proposed to dynamically optimize the mapping strategy from radio frequency (RF) chains to transmit antennas such that the weighted sum of channel gains is maximized. Then we adopt the inexact alternating minimization method to design hybrid precoding matrices with given optimal mapping strategy and finite-alphabet inputs. Simulation results demonstrate the good performance of our proposed algorithm.

Abstract:Millimeter wave (mmWave) communications have been considered as a key technology for next generation cellular systems and Wi-Fi networks because of its advances in providing orders-of-magnitude wider bandwidth than current wireless networks. Economical and energy efficient analog/digial hybrid precoding and combining transceivers have been often proposed for mmWave massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems to overcome the severe propagation loss of mmWave channels. One major shortcoming of existing solutions lies in the assumption of infinite or high-resolution phase shifters (PSs) to realize the analog beamformers. However, low-resolution PSs are typically adopted in practice to reduce the hardware cost and power consumption. Motivated by this fact, in this paper, we investigate the practical design of hybrid precoders and combiners with low-resolution PSs in mmWave MIMO systems. In particular, we propose an iterative algorithm which successively designs the low-resolution analog precoder and combiner pair for each data stream, aiming at conditionally maximizing the spectral efficiency. Then, the digital precoder and combiner are computed based on the obtained effective baseband channel to further enhance the spectral efficiency. In an effort to achieve an even more hardware-efficient large antenna array, we also investigate the design of hybrid beamformers with one-bit resolution (binary) PSs, and present a novel binary analog precoder and combiner optimization algorithm with quadratic complexity in the number of antennas. The proposed low-resolution hybrid beamforming design is further extended to multiuser MIMO communication systems. Simulation results demonstrate the performance advantages of the proposed algorithms compared to existing low-resolution hybrid beamforming designs, particularly for the one-bit resolution PS scenario.

Abstract:For millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) systems, hybrid precoding/combining is a promising way to reduce hardware cost and power consumption by decreasing the number of radio-frequency (RF) chains without causing a significant spectral-efficiency loss. Most of the existing hybrid precoding schemes involve iterative searching or alternating optimization, so their computational complexity is high and they do not take advantage of parallel computing to improve the real-time performance. In this article, considering the scenarios where the number of data streams equals to the number of RF chains, we propose a family of hybrid precoding schemes by leveraging the equivalent channel and singular value decomposition for a better tradeoff between spectral efficiency and computational complexity. Simulation results with different system settings show that our proposed schemes are superior to other existing schemes in terms of system spectral efficiency.

Abstract:Millimeter-wave (mm-Wave) MIMO systems have been proposed to achieve higher spectral efficiency via the hybrid beamforming structure, which consists of analog beamforming and digital beamforming. In analog beamforming, each antenna subarray generates a codebook-based directional beam, which determines the equivalent MIMO channel. Then, digital beamforming can be applied to fully exploit the spatial multiplexing gain of MIMO channels. In this paper, we propose a low-complexity analog beam selection scheme to achieve near-optimal spectral efficiency for the split hybrid beamforming system. The core of our scheme is the beam selection criterion, which is derived from capacity analysis. Furthermore, we propose a beam switching algorithm to ensure the robustness when blockage occurs. Through simulations under different channel conditions, the near-optimal performance of our scheme is demonstrated, and the beam switching algorithm is able to ensure robust network connectivity and achieve higher channel capacity when the blockage is relived.

Abstract:In mmWave communication systems, existing hybrid beamforming solutions generally require a large number of high-resolution phase shifters (PSs) to realize analog beamformers, which still suffer from high hardware complexity and power consumption. Targeting at this problem, this article introduces a novel hardware-efficient hybrid precoding/combining architecture, which only employs a limited number of simple phase over-samplers (POSs) and a switch (SW) network to achieve maximum hardware efficiency while maintaining satisfactory spectral efficiency performance. The POS can be realized by a simple circuit and simultaneously outputs several parallel signals with different phases. With the aid of a simple switch network, the analog precoder/combiner is implemented by feeding the signals with appropriate phases to antenna arrays or RF chains. We analyze the design challenges of this POS-SW-based hybrid beamforming architecture and present potential solutions to the fundamental issues, especially the precoder/combiner design and the channel estimation strategy. Simulation results demonstrate that this hardware-efficient structure can achieve comparable spectral efficiency but much higher energy efficiency than that of traditional structures.

Abstract:Millimeter wave (mmWave) massive MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) systems will enable gigabits per second transmitting data rate owing to the large bandwidth available in mmWave spectrum. It is difficult to utilize conventional lower frequency precoding techniques in mmWave massive MIMO systems because of the hardware constraints. Fortunately, the hybrid precoding can be utilized to extremely reduce the power consumption and high cost. In this paper, we propose the hybrid precoding scheme for downlink multi-user mmWave massive MIMO systems. Our scheme is based on the thought that the inter-user interference can be nullified at the analog step and the transmitting data rate is further maximized at digital step. The analog precoding matrix is derived based on the Equal Gain Transmission (EGT) method. Waterfilling technique is directly employed in the digital precoding matrix based on the almost orthogonal effective channel. Simulation results show that the proposed the hybrid EGT/waterfilling (HEW) scheme which has low complexity outperforms the other existing algorithms in low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) scenarios.

Abstract:Recently, hybrid precoding architectures have been proposed for the purpose of practical implementation of massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems in the Fifth Generation (5G) networks. In this paper, a general precoding method is investigated for Millimeter Wave (mm Wave) multi-user systems, which is composed of the designs in analog Radio Frequency (RF) and digital baseband matrices. In the general hybrid architecture, the analog part is constituted of independent analog sub-arrays with full connection inside. The analog precoding matrix is considered by maximizing Signal-to-Leakage-plus-Noise Ratio (SLNR) with only the long-term statistics of user groups. Due to the constant module constraint of RF chains, a supplemental matrix is introduced to reduce the performance loss. The digital precoding matrix performs Regularized Zero-Forcing (RZF) with the reduced amount of effective channels. Finally, simulation results demonstrate the performance improvement of the proposed precoding method. Meanwhile, trade-off between the performance and the complexity is handled well by the proposed method.

Abstract:In millimeter-wave (mmWave) MIMO systems, while a hybrid digital/analog precoding structure offers the potential to increase the achievable rate, it also faces the challenge of the need of a low-complexity design. In specific, the hybrid precoding may require matrix operations with a scale of antenna size, which is generally large in mmWave communication. Moreover, the channel estimation is also rather time consuming due to the large number of antennas at both Tx/Rx sides. In this paper, a low-complexity hybrid precoding and channel estimation approach is proposed. In the channel estimation phase, a hierarchical multi-beam search scheme is proposed to fast acquire $N_{\rm{S}}$ (the number of streams) multipath components (MPCs)/clusters with the highest powers. In the hybrid precoding phase, the analog and digital precodings are decoupled. The analog precoding is designed to steer along the $N_{\rm{S}}$ acquired MPCs/clusters at both Tx/Rx sides, shaping an equivalent $N_{\rm{S}}\times N_{\rm{S}}$ baseband channel, while the digital precoding performs operations in the baseband with the reduced-scale channel. Performance evaluations show that, compared with a state-of-the-art scheme, while achieving a close or even better performance when the number of radio-frequency (RF) chains or streams is small, both the computational complexity of the hybrid precoding and the time complexity of the channel estimation are greatly reduced.
