Abstract:The stability of surrounding rock has become one of major questions in the underground engineering. Based on monitoring data, this paper aims at presenting reasonable and feasible nonlinear way to predict fracturing time, crack situation and depth of surrounding rock. Applying catastrophe theory and fractal geometry to analyze the data, a fractal dimension criterion of judging cracks conditions is proposed according to the deformation property of surrounding rocks. The method forecasts not only the exact fracturing section but also the depth range and accurate fracturing time of crack. The results show that (1) The occasion of minimum fractal dimension is an alarm and foreboding of main fracturing or cracking in study area. (2) Based on the surrounding rock deformation measured by multipoint extensometers, the fractal dimension, describing irregular level of surrounding rock deformation, of monitoring points in the same depth from closer section to another decrease first and then increase. And the rule can be used to forecast the crack depth between the two monitoring points. (3) Based on catastrophe theory, when the cracks of surrounding rocks are forthcoming, the delta variable quantity of displacement/time sequences grows up to several orders of magnitude. And a first negative delta variable quantity corresponds to cracking time. The results are to be applied to analyze the stability of surrounding rocks where such ground condition is encountered.
