Abstract:The cytotoxicity of three cycloartane triterpenoids, 9,19-cycloart-7beta, 24R, 25- triol-1-en-3-one (1), 9,19-cycloart-7beta, 24R, 25-triol-1-en-3-one 25-O-beta-D-glucopynanoside (2), and 25-O-beta-D-arabinopyranosyl-(1-->4)- beta-D-glucopyranosyl-9,19-cycloart-7beta, 24R, 25-triol-1-en-3-one (3), isolated from Sphaerophysa salsula was investigated on SF188, U87wt, MCF-7, and H460 cancer cell lines. Compound 1 showed the strongest activity. Cell cycle analysis was employed to elucidate the cytotoxicity on the tested U87wt cells, which led to G2/M arrest. In addition, from the Western blotting experiments, the expression of P21 is increased.

Abstract:This is a review on the chemical constituents, pharmacology, toxicology and biosynthesis of Sphaerophysa. Eight compounds have been isolated from it, which include flavonoids, coumarins, alkaloids and sterol. The pharmacological experiments have concluded that the total flavonoidal glycosides of Swainsonia salsula Taub. had the effect of anti-hypertension and the swainsonine was an inhibitor of lysosomal alpha-mannosidase. The biosynthesis of Swainsonine in fungus had been proposed and its precursor was L-lysine.

Abstract:The phytochemical analysis of the ethanolic extract obtained from D. oleoides collected from Sardinia Island allowed the isolation of several new constituents for the species (3, 8, and 9) together with two new coumarinyl ethers (1 and 2) besides the chemotaxonomic markers of the Daphne genus (4 - 7 and 10) which are also known to possess interesting biological activities. The structure of the new compounds were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic and spectrometric analyses. The identification of these compounds gives an experimental evidence of the variability in the secondary metabolites pattern owned by populations growing in restricted area in respect to populations not confined by geographical barrier.

Abstract:AIM: To study chemical constituents of the aerial parts of Artemisia anomala (Asteraceae). METHODS: The constituents were isolated with silica gel, ODS column chromatography and semi-preparative HPLC, and their structures were elucidated on the basis of physical characteristics and spectral data. RESULTS: Eight compounds were obtained, and their structures were identified as 3 beta-ethoxytanapartholide (1), (4S*, 5S*)-dihydro-5-[( 1R*, 2S*)-2-hydroxy-2-methyl-5-oxo-3-cyclopenten-1-yl]-3-methylene-4-(3-oxobutyl)-2(3H)-furanone (2), ligucyperonol (3), cyperusol C (4), santamarin (5), 1 alpha, 2 alpha, 3 alpha, 4 alpha, 10 alpha -pentahydroxyguaia-11(13)-ene-12, 6 alpha-olide (6), balanophonin (7), methyl 3-(2'-hydroxy-4'-methoxyphenyl) propanoate (8). CONCLUSION: Compound 1 was a new artifact, 4 and 8 were isolated from the genus Artemisia for the first time, and compounds 2-3, 5-7 were isolated from this plant for the first time.

Abstract:Chemical investigation of the water extracts from the Senecio cannabifolius Less. led us to find two new compounds (1 and 2), along with 12 known compounds (3–14). The two new compounds were determined as (E, 4R)-4-hydroxy-4,5,5-trimethyl-3-(3-oxobut-1-enyl)cyclohex-2-enone (1) and (E)-4-((1S, 3R, 4R)-1-hydroxy-4,5,5-trimethyl-7-oxabicyclo[4.1.0]heptan-1-yl)but-1-en-3-o-ne (2), respectively. The structures of other compounds were elucidated by extensive analysis of spectral data and in comparison with the literature values. Compounds 1 and 2 were evaluated for inhibitory activity against lipopolysaccharide-induced NO production in RAW 264.7 macrophages, and compound 1 showed potent inhibitory activity with IC50 value of 30.65 μM.

Abstract:Nine undescribed carotane sesquiterpenes and rare rearranged guaiane sesquiterpenoids ( 1‒9 ), along with two known analogues ( 10‒11 ), were obtained from the aerial parts of Daphne penicillata . Their structures and absolute configurations were determined by extensive spectroscopic analyses, NMR/ECD calculations, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. All compounds were evaluated for anti-inflammatory and cytotoxic activities. The inhibitory effect of several active sesquiterpenoids against the cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) enzyme was also examined by an in vitro enzyme inhibition assay. Furthermore, molecular docking, molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and binding free energy calculation were applied to further analyze the interactions, stability and affinity, among which compounds 3 and 4 exhibited high binding affinities and stable binding to the active site of COX-2.

Abstract:Two new sesquiterpenoids, sarglanoids G and H (1 and 2), together with two known analogues (3-4) were isolated from the roots of Sarcandra glabra. Compound 2 was a rare elemene-type sesquiterpenoid with a furan ring fragment, which is mostly lactone ring in its analogues. The structures of new compounds were determined on the basis of extensive spectroscopic methods including HR-ESI-MS, 1D and 2D NMR, and the absolute configuration of 1 was established by ECD calculations. Their anti-inflammatory activities were also evaluated.

By means of chemical and spectroscopic methods (IR, 1D- and 2D- NMR, HRMS, ESI-MS), the structures were established as (24 R)-3β,7β,24,25,30-pentahydroxycycloartane 3- O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-24- O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-30- O-β-D-glucopyranoside (1), and (24 R)-3β,7β,24,25,30-pentahydroxycycloartane 3- O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→2)-β-D-glucopyranosyl-24- O-β-D-xylopyranosyl-(1→2)-β-D-glucopyranoside (2). The two new compounds were tested for their cytotoxicity in vitro against human tumor cell lines (A375-S2, Hela) using the MTT method, but both compounds were inactive.

Abstract:Phytochemical investigation on the acetone extract of Salvia mirzayanii Rech. f. and Esfand. aﬀorded seven new isoprenoids including six new sesterterpenoids salvimirzacolide A-F (1-6), and one new nor-diterpenoid (7). Their structures were established by comprehensive spectroscopic and spectrometric data analysis (1D and 2D NMR, HRMS) and DP4+ NMR chemical shift probability calculation technique. Moreover, the absolute conﬁguration of compounds was determined by using electronic circular dichroism spectroscopy. Evaluation of antiproliferative properties of compounds isolated against four human melanoma cancer cells displayed no cytotoxic activity at the concentration range used.

Abstract:Eight compounds were isolated from the aerial parts of Siegesbeckia orientalis L. and their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods(IR, EI-MS, 13C-NMR, 1H-NMR, 1H-1H COSY, 1H-1H NOESY and 1H-13C COSY). Compounds I and II are new natural products and named siegesesteric acid(I) and siegesetheric acid(II), their structures were confirmed as ent-17-acetoxy-18-isobutyryloxy-16(alpha)-kauran-19-oic acid(I) and ent-17-ethoxy-16(alpha)-(-)-kauran-19-oic acid(II). The others were identified as known compounds: ent-16 beta, 17-dihydroxy-kauran-19-oic acid (III), kirenol(IV), beta-sitosteryl glucoside(V), heneicosanol(VI), methyl arachidate(VII) and beta-sitosterol(VIII). These compounds, except kirenol and beta-sitosterol, were isolated for the first time from the title plant.
