In particular, it is proven that if G, H are two effective divisors of the same degree smaller than n - 1, then C(D, G) and C(D, H) are equal, if and only if G = H.

Abstract:The existence of optimal binary self-dual codes is a long-standing research problem. In this paper, we present some results concerning the decomposition of binary self-dual codes with a dihedral automorphism group D-2p, where p is a prime. These results are applied to construct new self-dual codes with length 78 or 116. We obtain 16 inequivalent self-dual [78, 39, 14] codes, four of which have new weight enumerators. We also show that there are at least 141 inequivalent self-dual [116, 58, 18] codes, most of which are new up to equivalence. Meanwhile, we give some restrictions on the weight enumerators of singly even self-dual codes. We use these restrictions to exclude some possible weight enumerators of self-dual codes with lengths 74, 76, 82, 98 and 100.

Abstract:Gauss periods taking exactly two values are closely related to two-weight irreducible cyclic codes and strongly regular Cayley graphs. They have been extensively studied in the work of Schmidt and White and others. In this paper, we consider the question of when Gauss periods take exactly three rational values. We obtain numerical necessary conditions for Gauss periods to take exactly three rational values. We show that in certain cases, the necessary conditions obtained are also sufficient. We give numerous examples where the Gauss periods take exactly three values. Furthermore, we discuss connections between three-valued Gauss periods and combinatorial structures such as circulant weighing matrices and three-class association schemes.

Abstract:In 1976, Helleseth conjectured that two binary m-sequences of length 2 m − 1 can not have a three-valued crosscorrelation function when m is a power of 2. We show that this conjecture is true when −1 is a correlation value. In other words, if ${{\mathcal{C}}_{1,k}}$ is the cyclic code of length 2 m − 1 with two zeros α, α k , where α is a primitive element of ${{\mathbb{F}}_{2^m}}$ and gcd(k, 2 m − 1) = 1, then its dual ${{\mathcal{C}}_{1,k}^{\perp}}$ can not have three weights when m is a power of 2.

Abstract:In this paper, we resolve a conjecture of Green and Liebeck (2019) [3] on codes in PGL(2,q). To be specific, we show that: if D is a dihedral subgroup of order 2(q+1) in G=PGL(2,q), and A={g∈G:gq+1=1,g2≠1}, then λG=A⋅D, where λ=q or q−1 according as q is even or odd.

Abstract:We investigate the geometric foundations of the space of geometric Goppa codes using the Tsfasman-Vladut H-construction. These codes are constructed from level structures, which extend the classical Goppa framework by incorporating invertible sheaves and trivializations. A key contribution is the definition of the Goppa morphism, a map from the moduli space of level structures, denoted $LS_{g,n,d}$, to the Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}(k,n)$. This morphism allows problems related to distinguishing attacks and key recovery in the context of geometric Goppa codes to be translated into a geometric language, addressing questions about the equations defining the image of the Goppa morphism and its fibers. Furthermore, we identify the ranges of the degree parameter $d$ that should be avoided to maintain security against distinguishers. Our results, valid over arbitrary base fields, also apply to convolutional Goppa codes.

Abstract:It was shown by Massey that linear complementary dual (LCD) codes are asymptotically good. In 2004, Sendrier proved that LCD codes meet the asymptotic Gilbert-Varshamov (GV) bound. Until now, the GV bound still remains to be the best asymptotical lower bound for LCD codes. In this paper, we show that an algebraic geometry code over a finite field of even characteristic is equivalent to an LCD code and consequently there exists a family of LCD codes that are equivalent to algebraic geometry codes and exceed the asymptotical GV bound.

Abstract:Stopping sets are useful for analyzing the performance of a linear code under an iterative decoding algorithm over an erasure channel. In this paper, we consider stopping sets of one-point algebraic geometry codes defined by a hyperelliptic curve of genus g=2 defined by the plane model y2=f(x), where the degree of f(x) was 5. We completely classify the stopping sets of the one-point algebraic geometric codes C=CΩ(D,mP∞) defined by a hyperelliptic curve of genus 2 with m≤4. For m=3, we proved in detail that all sets S⊆{1,2,⋯,n} of a size greater than 3 are stopping sets and we give an example of sets of size 2,3 that are not.

Abstract: Let $d(n; r_1, q_1, r_2, q_2)$ be the number of factorization $n=n_1n_2$ satisfying $n_i\equiv r_i\pmod{q_i}$ ($i=1,2$) and $\Delta(x; r_1, q_1, r_2, q_2)$ be the error term of the summatory function of $d(n; r_1, q_1, r_2, q_2)$ with $x\geq (q_1q_2)^{1+\varepsilon}, 1\leq r_i\leq q_i$, and $(r_i, q_i)=1$ ($i=1, 2$). We study the power moments and sign changes of $\Delta(x; r_1, q_1, r_2, q_2)$, and prove that for a sufficiently large constant $C$, $\Delta(q_1q_2x; r_1, q_1, r_2, q_2)$ changes sign in the interval $[T,T+C\sqrt{T}]$ for any large $T$. Meanwhile, we show that for a small constant $c'$, there exist infinitely many subintervals of length $c'\sqrt{T}\log^{-7}T$ in $[T,2T]$ where $\pm \Delta(q_1q_2x; r_1, q_1, r_2, q_2)> c_5x^\frac{1}{4}$ always holds.
On the matrix code of quadratic relationships for a Goppa code

Abstract:In this article, we continue the analysis started in \cite{CMT23} for the matrix code of quadratic relationships associated with a Goppa code. We provide new sparse and low-rank elements in the matrix code and categorize them according to their shape. Thanks to this description, we prove that the set of rank 2 matrices in the matrix codes associated with square-free binary Goppa codes, i.e. those used in Classic McEiece, is much larger than what is expected, at least in the case where the Goppa polynomial degree is 2. We build upon the algebraic determinantal modeling introduced in \cite{CMT23} to derive a structural attack on these instances. Our method can break in just a few seconds some recent challenges about key-recovery attacks on the McEliece cryptosystem, consistently reducing their estimated security level. We also provide a general method, valid for any Goppa polynomial degree, to transform a generic pair of support and multiplier into a pair of support and Goppa polynomial.

Nonlinear Codes Exceeding the Gilbert-Varshamov and Tsfasman-Vlăduţ-Zink Bounds.

Abstract:The Gilbert-Varshamov (GV for short) bound has been a benchmark for good Hamming-metric codes. It was even conjectured by some coding theorists that the asymptotic Gilbert-Varshamov bound is tight. The GV bound had remained to be the best asymptotic lower bound for thirty years before it was broken by the Tsfasman-Vladut-Zink bound via algebraic geometry codes. The discovery of algebraic geometry codes by Goppa was a breakthrough in coding theory. After another twenty years, no any improvements on the Tsfasman-Vladut-Zink bound took place before the work by Xing-Elkies [14, 15, 1, 2] in the early of 2000 via tools from algebraic geometry. By using the similar ideas as in [14, 15, 9], some further improvements were given in [7, 17]. Since then, no further progress on asymptotic lower bounds has been made. The main result of this paper is to show that all previous asymptotic lower bounds can be improved in an interval. We present two types of constructions of Hamming-metric codes. Both constructions involve algebraic geometry and need insights on applications of algebraic geometry to coding theory. In order to obtain good codes, one construction requires a larger number of positive divisors of fixed degree, while other construction requires a smaller number of positive divisors of fixed degree. As a result, no matter how large the number of positive divisors of fixed degree is, we can always obtain codes with good parameters. It turns out that all previous asymptotic lower bounds are improved.

Abstract:We give an asymptotic formula as $t\to+\infty$ for the number of common perpendiculars of length at most $t$ between two divergent geodesics or a divergent geodesic and a compact locally convex subset in negatively curved locally symmetric spaces with exponentially mixing geodesic flow, presenting a surprising non-purely exponential growth. We apply this result to count ambiguous geodesics in the modular orbifold recovering results of Sarnak, and to confirm and extend a conjecture of Motohashi on the binary additive divisor problem in imaginary quadratic number fields.

Abstract:Based on curves over finite fields with many rational points, we present two constructions of linear codes from local expansions of functions at a fixed rational point. It turns out that codes from our constructions have the same bound on their parameters as Goppa's (1981) geometry codes. Furthermore, we prove that our second construction is equivalent to Goppa's construction. Finally, an additional construction of linear codes from maximal curves shows that these codes have better parameters than Goppa's geometry codes from maximal curves for a certain interval of parameters.

Abstract:Since discovery of Goppa geometric codes, people have been asking the question: are there different constructions of block codes from algebraic curves that give the same parameters as Goppa geometric codes. Despite of great effort by researchers, no such constructions have been found so far. Although in literature, there are many constructions of block code from algebraic curves, most of them are quite different from the one by Goppa in nature and thus they have different parameters. Some of these constructions have the same parameters as Goppa geometric codes, however it was proved that these are essentially the same codes defined by Goppa. In this paper, we solve this question for the case where the characteristic of the ground field is 2, namely, we present a different construction of block codes from algebraic curves that give the same parameters as Goppa geometric codes for the characteristic 2 case.
