Abstract:The law of large numbers for the empirical density for the pairs of uniformly distributed integers with a given greatest common divisor is a classic result in number theory. In this paper, we study the large deviations of the empirical density. We will also obtain a rate of convergence to the normal distribution for the central limit theorem. Abstract:Sequences of the form $(\gcd(u_n,v_n))_{n \in \mathbb N}$, with $(u_n)_n$, $(v_n)_n$ sums of $S$-units, have been considered by several authors. The study of $\gcd(n,u_n)$ corresponds, following Silverman, to divisibility sequences arising from the split algebraic group $\mathbb G_{\mathrm{a}} \times \mathbb G_{\mathrm{m}}$; in this case, Sanna determined all asymptotic moments of the arithmetic function $\log\,\gcd (n,u_n)$ when $(u_n)_n$ is a Lucas sequence. Here, we characterize the asymptotic behavior of the moments themselves $\sum_{n \leq x}\,\gcd(n,u_n)^\lambda$, thus solving the moment problem for $\mathbb G_{\mathrm{a}} \times \mathbb G_{\mathrm{m}}$. We give both unconditional and conditional results, the latter only relying on standard conjectures in analytic number theory.

Abstract:We bound the greatest common divisor of two coprime multivariable polynomials evaluated at algebraic numbers, generalizing work of Levin, and going towards conjectured inequalities of Silverman and Vojta. As an application, we prove results on greatest common divisors of terms from two linear recurrence sequences, extending the results of Levin, who considered the case where the linear recurrences are simple, and improving recent results of Grieve and Wang. The proofs rely on Schmidt's Subspace Theorem.

Abstract:Let G be an additive, finite abelian group. The critical number $\mathsf{cr}(G)$ of $G$ is the smallest positive integer $\ell$ such that for every subset $S \subset G \setminus \{0\}$ with $|S| \ge \ell$ the following holds: Every element of $G$ can be written as a nonempty sum of distinct elements from $S$. The critical number was first studied by P. Erdős and H. Heilbronn in 1964, and due to the contributions of many authors the value of $\mathsf {cr}(G)$ is known for all finite abelian groups $G$ except for $G \cong \mathbb{Z}/pq\mathbb{Z}$ where $p,q$ are primes such that $p+\lfloor2\sqrt{p-2}\rfloor+1<q<2p$. We determine that $\mathsf {cr}(G)=p+q-2$ for such groups.

Abstract:Let $k\ge 2$ be a fixed integer. We consider sums of type $\sum_{n_1\cdots n_k\le x} F(n_1,\ldots,n_k)$, taken over the hyperbolic region $\{(n_1,\ldots,n_k)\in {\Bbb N}^k: n_1\cdots n_k\le x\}$, where $F:{\Bbb N}^k\to {\Bbb C}$ is a given function. In particular, we deduce asymptotic formulas with remainder terms for the hyperbolic summations $\sum_{n_1\cdots n_k\le x} f((n_1,\ldots,n_k))$ and $\sum_{n_1\cdots n_k\le x} f([n_1,\ldots,n_k])$, involving the GCD and LCM of the integers $n_1,\ldots,n_k$, where $f:{\Bbb N}\to {\Bbb C}$ belongs to certain classes of functions. Some of our results generalize those obtained by the authors for $k=2$.

Abstract:Let be the sequence of Fibonacci numbers and, for each positive integer k , let be the set of primes p such that . We prove that the relative density of exists, and we give a formula for in terms of an absolutely convergent series. Furthermore, we give an effective criterion to establish if a given k satisfies , and we provide upper and lower bounds for the counting function of the set of such k 's. As an application of our results, we give a new proof of a lower bound for the counting function of the set of integers of the form , for some positive integer n . Our proof is more elementary than the previous one given by Leonetti and Sanna, which relies on a result of Cubre and Rouse.
Pell and associated Pell braid sequences as GCDs of sums of $k$ consecutive Pell, balancing, and related numbers

Abstract:We consider the greatest common divisor (GCD) of all sums of $k$ consecutive terms of a sequence $(S_n)_{n\geq 0}$ where the terms $S_n$ come from exactly one of following six well-known sequences' terms: Pell $P_n$, associated Pell $Q_n$, balancing $B_n$, Lucas-balancing $C_n$, cobalancing $b_n$, and Lucas-cobalancing $c_n$ numbers. For each of the six GCDs, we provide closed forms dependent on $k$. Moreover, each of these closed forms can be realized as braid sequences of Pell and associated Pell numbers in an intriguing manner. We end with partial results on GCDs of sums of squared terms and open questions.

Abstract:We present new formulas for computing greatest common divisors (GCDs) and extracting the prime factors of semiprimes using only elementary arithmetic operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, floored division, and exponentiation. Our GCD formula simplifies a formula of Mazzanti and is derived using Kronecker substitution techniques from our earlier research. By combining this GCD formula with our recent result on an arithmetic term for $\sqrt{n}$, we derive explicit expressions for the prime factors of a semiprime $n=p q$.

Abstract:Motivated by a question of V. Bergelson and F. K. Richter (2017), we obtain asymptotic formulas for the number of relatively prime tuples composed of positive integers $n\le N$ and integer parts of polynomials evaluated at $n$. The error terms in our formulas are of various strengths depending on the Diophantine properties of the leading coefficients of these polynomials.

Abstract:We generalize recent matrix-based factorization theorems for Lambert series generating functions generating the coefficients $(f \ast 1)(n)$ for some arithmetic function $f$. Our new factorization theorems provide analogs to these established expansions generating sums of the form $\sum_{d: (d,n)=1} f(d)$ (type I) and the Anderson-Apostol sums $\sum_{d|(m,n)} f(d) g(n/d)$ (type II) for any arithmetic functions $f$ and $g$. Our treatment of the type II sums includes a matrix-based factorization method relating the partition function $p(n)$ to arbitrary arithmetic functions $f$. We also conclude the last section of the article by directly expanding new formulas for an arithmetic function $g$ by the type II sums using discrete Fourier transforms for functions over inputs of greatest common divisors and by suitably defined orthogonal polynomial sequences whose weight function we can define by a discrete time Fourier transform (DTFT) involving the partition function $p(n)$. There are numerous applications and special cases of our new results which we are able to cite as examples in the article. Particular cases of the applications we give in the article include new identities for Euler's totient function, the Ramanujan sums $c_q(n)$, the generalized sum-of-divisors functions, the Mertens function which is the summatory function of the Möbius function, and the cyclotomic polynomials.

Abstract:For any constant $C_0>0$, we construct a set $A \subset {\mathbb N}$ such that one has $$ \sum_{n \in A: n \leq x} \frac{1}{n} = \exp\left(\left(\frac{C_0}{2}+o(1)\right) (\log\log x)^{1/2} \log\log\log x \right)$$ and $$ \sum_{n,m \in A: n, m \leq x} \frac{1}{\operatorname{lcm}(n,m)} \ll_{C_0} \left(\sum_{n \in A: n \leq x} \frac{1}{n}\right)^2$$ as $x \to \infty$, with the growth rate given here optimal up to the dependence on $C_0$. This answers in the negative a question of Erdős and Graham, and also clarifies the nature of certain ``mostly coprime'' sets studied by Bergelson and Richter.

Combination theorems for geometrically finite convergence groups

Abstract:We prove combination theorems in the spirit of Klein and Maskit in the context of discrete convergence groups acting geometrically finitely on their limit sets. As special cases, we obtain combination theorems for geometrically finite groups of isometries of Hadamard manifolds with pinched negative curvature, and for relatively quasi-convex subgroups of relatively hyperbolic groups.

Abstract:In a recent paper the author derived a formula for calculating common denominators for the homogeneous components of the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff (BCH) series. In the present work it is proved that this formula actually yields the smallest such common denominators. In an appendix a new efficient algorithm for computing coefficients of the BCH series is presented, which is based on these common denominators, and requires only integer arithmetic rather than less efficient rational arithmetic.
