Abstract:Optical parametric oscillators (OPOs) can downconvert the pump laser to longer wavelengths with octave separation via χ ( 2 ) , which is widely used for laser wavelength extension including mid-infrared (MIR) generation. Such a process can be integrated in monolithic resonators, being compact and low in threshold. In this work, we show that the monolithic χ ( 2 ) mini-OPO can also be used for optical frequency comb generation around 2096 nm and enters the boundary of MIR range. A new geometry called an optical superlattice box resonator is developed for this realization with near-material-limited quality factor of 4.0 × 10 7 . Only a continuous-wave near-infrared pump laser is required, with OPO threshold of 80 mW and output power up to 340 mW. Revival temporal profiles are measured at a detectable repetition frequency of 1.426 GHz, and narrow beat note linewidth of less than 10 Hz shows high comb coherence. These results are in good agreement with our simulation for a stable comb generation. Such an OPO-based comb source is useful for carbon dioxide sensing or the mine prospect applications and can be generalized to longer MIR wavelengths for general gas spectroscopy.

Abstract:High quality lithium niobate thin film microresonators provide an ideal platform for on-chip nonlinear optics applications. However, the phase matching condition for efficient parametric process sets a high requirement for fabrication control. Here we demonstrate a photonic molecular structure composed of two strongly coupled lithium niobate microdisks of different diameters fabricated using femtosecond laser micromachining and focused ion beam milling. With a continuous wave excitation, rich nonlinear optical processes including cascaded four-wave mixing and stimulated Raman scattering were observed around the second harmonic wavelength. Our results indicate that the coupled microdisks form a superior system for nonlinear optical process.

Abstract:Microresonator frequency combs have rapidly evolved in the last years and have become a hot topic in integrated photonics. These combs are typically generated relying on the (3) nonlinearity via degenerate and non-degenerate four wave mixing. More recently, the idea of comb generation based on the (2) nonlinearity has also started to be explored as it might provide new potential benefits like accesing new wavelength ranges. In this direction, we investigate the generation of (2) frequency combs based on optical parametric oscillation in a lithium niobate whispering gallery resonator. By pumping at 532 nm and driving the optical parametric oscillation to degeneracy at 1064 nm, we observe two 1-THz-wide combs centered around these wavelengths. This scheme can directly be transferred to other materials to generate combs in the mid-IR region by pumping at telecom wavelengths.

Abstract:Optical frequency comb based on microresonator (microcomb) is an integrated coherent light source and has the potential to promise a high-precision frequency standard, and self-reference and long-term stable microcomb is the key to this realization. Here, we demonstrated a 0.7-octave spectrum Kerr comb via dispersion engineering in a thin film lithium niobate microresonator, and the single soliton state can be accessed passively with long-term stability over 3 hours. With such a robust broadband coherent comb source using thin film lithium niobate, fully stabilized microcomb can be expected for massive practical applications.

Abstract:The introduction of nonlinear nanophotonic devices to the field of optical frequency comb metrology has enabled new opportunities for low-power and chip-integrated clocks, high-precision frequency synthesis and broad-bandwidth spectroscopy. However, most of these advances remain constrained to the near-infrared region of the spectrum, which has restricted the integration of frequency combs with numerous quantum and atomic systems in the ultraviolet and visible ranges. Here we overcome this shortcoming with the introduction of multisegment nanophotonic thin-film lithium niobate waveguides that combine engineered dispersion and chirped quasi-phase matching for efficient supercontinuum generation via the combination of χ (2) and χ (3) nonlinearities. With only 90 pJ of pulse energy at 1,550 nm, we achieve gap-free frequency comb coverage spanning 330–2,400 nm. The conversion efficiency from the near-infrared pump to the ultraviolet–visible region of 350–550 nm is 17%, and our modelling of optimized poling structures predicts an even higher efficiency. Harmonic generation via the χ (2) nonlinearity in the same waveguide directly yields the carrier-envelope offset frequency and a means to verify the comb coherence at wavelengths as short as 350 nm. Our results provide an integrated photonics approach to create visible and ultraviolet frequency combs that will impact precision spectroscopy, quantum information processing and optical clock applications in this important spectral window.

Abstract:Ultrabroadband frequency combs coherently unite distant portions of the electromagnetic spectrum. They underpin discoveries in ultrafast science and serve as the building blocks of modern photonic technologies. Despite tremendous progress in integrated sources of frequency combs, achieving multi-octave operation on chip has remained elusive mainly because of the energy demand of typical spectral broadening processes. Here we break this barrier and demonstrate multi-octave frequency comb generation using an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) in nanophotonic lithium niobate with only femtojoules of pump energy. The energy-efficient and robust coherent spectral broadening occurs far above the oscillation threshold of the OPO and detuned from its linear synchrony with the pump. We show that the OPO can undergo a temporal self-cleaning mechanism by transitioning from an incoherent operation regime, which is typical for operation far above threshold, to an ultrabroad coherent regime, corresponding to the nonlinear phase compensating the OPO cavity detuning. Such a temporal self-cleaning mechanism and the subsequent multi-octave coherent spectrum has not been explored in previous OPO designs and features a relaxed requirement for the quality factor and relatively narrow spectral coverage of the cavity. We achieve orders of magnitude reduction in the energy requirement compared to the other techniques, confirm the coherence of the comb, and present a path towards more efficient and wider spectral broadening. Our results pave the way for ultrashort-pulse and ultrabroadband on-chip nonlinear photonic systems for numerous applications.

Abstract:Optical frequency combs (OFCs) at Mid-Infrared (MIR) wavelengths are essential for applications in precise spectroscopy, gas sensing and molecular fingerprinting, because of its revolutionary precision in both wavelength and frequency domain. The microresonator-based OFCs make a further step towards practical applications by including such high precision in a compact and cost-effective package. However, dispersion engineering is still a challenge for the conventional chi-3 micro-ring resonators and a MIR pump laser is required. Here we develop a different platform of a chi-2 optical superlattice box resonator to generate MIR OFC by optical parametric down conversion. With near-material-limited quality factor of 2.0*10^7, broadband MIR OFC can be generated with over 250 nm span around 2060 nm, where only a common near-infrared laser is necessary as pump. The fine teeth spacing corresponds to a measurable radio frequency beat note at 1.566 GHz, and also results in a fine spectroscopy resolution. Its linewidth is measured to be 6.1 kHz, which reveals a low comb noise that agrees well with the clean temporal waveforms. With high output power of over 370 mW, such MIR OFC is capable for long distance sensing and ranging applications.

Abstract:Chip-based soliton frequency combs have been demonstrated on various material platforms, offering broadband, mutually coherent, and equally spaced frequency lines desired for many applications. Lithium niobate (LN), possessing both second- and third-order optical nonlinearities, as well as integrability on insulating substrates, has emerged as a novel source for microcomb generation and controlling. Here we demonstrate mode-locked soliton microcombs generated around 2 μm in a high-Q z-cut LN microring resonator. The intracavity photorefractive effect is found to be still dominant over the thermal effect in the 2 μm region, which facilitates direct accessing soliton states in the red-detuned regime, as reported in the telecom band. We also find that intracavity stimulated Raman scattering is greatly suppressed when moving the pump wavelength from the telecom band to 2 μm, thus alleviating Raman-Kerr comb competition. This Letter expands mode-locked LN microcombs to 2 μm, and could enable a variety of potential applications based on LN nanophotonic platform.

Abstract:Microresonator Kerr frequency combs could provide miniaturised solutions for a wide range of applications. Many of these applications however require further manipulation of the generated frequency comb signal using photonic elements with strong second-order nonlinearity (χ(2)). To date these functionalities have largely been implemented as discrete components due to material limitations, which comes at the expense of extra system complexity and increased optical losses. Here we demonstrate the generation, filtering and electro-optic modulation of a frequency comb on a single monolithic integrated chip, using a nanophotonic lithium-niobate platform that simultaneously possesses large electro-optic (χ(2)) and Kerr (χ(3)) nonlinearities, and low optical losses. We generate broadband Kerr frequency combs using a dispersion-engineered high-Q lithium-niobate microresonator, select a single comb line using an electrically programmable add-drop filter, and modulate the intensity of the selected line. Our results pave the way towards monolithic integrated frequency comb solutions for spectroscopy, data communication, ranging and quantum photonics.

Abstract:We demonstrate a broadband optical parametric oscillation, using a sheet cavity, via cavity phase-matching. A 21.2 THz broad comb-like spectrum is achieved, with a uniform line spacing of 133.0 GHz, despite a relatively large dispersion of 275.4 fs2/mm around 1064 nm. With 22.6% high slope efficiency, and 14.9 kW peak power handling, this sheet optical parametric oscillator can be further developed for χ (2) comb.

Abstract:For its many useful properties, including second and third-order optical nonlinearity as well as electro-optic control, lithium niobate is considered an important potential microcomb material. Here, a soliton microcomb is demonstrated in a monolithic high-Q lithium niobate resonator. Besides the demonstration of soliton mode locking, the photorefractive effect enables mode locking to self-start and soliton switching to occur bi-directionally. Second-harmonic generation of the soliton spectrum is also observed, an essential step for comb self-referencing. The Raman shock time constant of lithium niobate is also determined by measurement of soliton self-frequency-shift. Besides the considerable technical simplification provided by a self-starting soliton system, these demonstrations, together with the electro-optic and piezoelectric properties of lithium niobate, open the door to a multi-functional microcomb providing f-2f generation and fast electrical control of optical frequency and repetition rate, all of which are critical in applications including time keeping, frequency synthesis/division, spectroscopy and signal generation.

Abstract:Integrated frequency comb generators based on Kerr parametric oscillation have led to chip-scale, gigahertz-spaced combs with new applications spanning hyperscale telecommunications, low-noise microwave synthesis, LiDAR, and astrophysical spectrometer calibration. Recent progress in lithium niobate (LN) photonic integrated circuits (PICs) has resulted in chip-scale electro-optic (EO) frequency combs, offering precise comb-line positioning and simple operation without relying on the formation of dissipative Kerr solitons. However, current integrated EO combs face limited spectral coverage due to the large microwave power required to drive the non-resonant capacitive electrodes and the strong intrinsic birefringence of Lithium Niobate. Here, we overcome both challenges with an integrated triply resonant architecture, combining monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMICs) with PICs based on the recently emerged thin-film lithium tantalate. With resonantly enhanced EO interaction and reduced birefringence in Lithium Tantalate, we achieve a four-fold comb span extension and a 16-fold power reduction compared to the conventional non-resonant microwave design. Driven by a hybrid-integrated laser diode, the comb spans over 450nm (60THz) with >2000 lines, and the generator fits within a compact 1cm^2 footprint. We additionally observe that the strong EO coupling leads to an increased comb existence range approaching the full free spectral range of the optical microresonator. The ultra-broadband comb generator, combined with detuning-agnostic operation, could advance chip-scale spectrometry and ultra-low-noise millimeter wave synthesis and unlock octave-spanning EO combs. The methodology of co-designing microwave and optical resonators can be extended to a wide range of integrated electro-optics applications.

Abstract:Optical frequency combs (OFCs) are essential in precision metrology, spectroscopy, distance measurement, and optical communications. Significant advances have been made recently in achieving micro-OFC devices based on parametric frequency conversion or electro-optic phase modulation. Here, we demonstrate a new kind of microcomb using a cavity optomechanical system with giant oscillation amplitude. We observe both optical and microwave frequency combs in a microtoroid resonator, which feature a flat OFC with 938 comb lines and a repetition rate as low as 50.22 MHz, as well as a flat microwave frequency comb with 867 comb lines. To generate such giant oscillation amplitude, we excite an overcoupled optical mode with a large blue detuning that is assisted with the thereto-optic nonlinearity. A new type of nonlinear oscillation, induced by competition between the optomechanical oscillation and thermo-optic nonlinearity, is also observed.

Abstract:Optical frequency combs consist of equally spaced discrete optical frequency components and are essential tools for optical communication, precision metrology, timing and spectroscopy1–9. At present, combs with wide spectra are usually generated by mode-locked lasers10 or dispersion-engineered resonators with third-order Kerr nonlinearity11. An alternative method of comb production uses electro-optic (EO) phase modulation in a resonator with strong second-order nonlinearity, resulting in combs with excellent stability and controllability12–14. Previous EO combs, however, have been limited to narrow widths by a weak EO interaction strength and a lack of dispersion engineering in free-space systems. Here we overcome these limitations by realizing an integrated EO comb generator in a thin-film lithium niobate photonic platform that features a large EO response, ultralow optical loss and highly co-localized microwave and optical fields15, while enabling dispersion engineering. Our measured EO comb spans more frequencies than the entire telecommunications L-band (over 900 comb lines spaced about 10 gigahertz apart), and we show that future dispersion engineering can enable octave-spanning combs. Furthermore, we demonstrate the high tolerance of our comb generator to modulation frequency detuning, with frequency spacing finely controllable over seven orders of magnitude (10 hertz to 100 megahertz), and we use this feature to generate dual-frequency combs in a single resonator. Our results show that integrated EO comb generators are capable of generating wide and stable comb spectra. Their excellent reconfigurability is a powerful complement to integrated Kerr combs, enabling applications ranging from spectroscopy16 to optical communications8.

Abstract:Microresonator based dual frequency combs offer an integrated photonic solution to a wide range of technological challenges, including spectroscopy, range finding, material characterization and hyperspectral imaging. These applications require a high level of mutual coherence between combs, but achieving such stability can be demanding. Here we experimentally demonstrate that comb generation exploiting the rich structure of the nonlinear electro-optic tensor in lithium niobate can generate ultra-stable dual combs, with the two combs naturally having orthogonal polarizations. We theoretically explore the application of our technique to dual frequency comb generation from the far infrared (IR) to the ultraviolet (UV). Our combs have relative linewidths as low as ~400 μHz, and require no stabilization or post-processing methods.

Abstract:Mid-infrared (MIR) optical frequency combs (OFCs) are ideal light sources for precision metrology and can find extensive applications, especially in molecular spectroscopy and gas detection. Here the generation of mode-locked MIR frequency comb in a LiNbO$_3$ microring through optimized slot-waveguide design is proposed. Such microcomb can span over four-fifths of an octave (ranging from $sim$2810 nm to $sim$4630 nm) with pump power as low as 50 mW, which can be applied to the 2f-3f self-referencing for fully stabilization and helpful to monolithic integration of the whole system. Further investigations on complex dynamical processes for the microcomb generation suggest that the intracavity soliton drifting caused by the third-order dispersion could be compensated by the self-steepening effect as introducing an additional drift through proper dispersion tailoring. This work could facilitate the low-threshold broadband MIR frequency comb generation technique, as well as provide a way to realize more delicate control of soliton microcombs in both temporal and spectral domain.
