Abstract:A new method was reported to modify layered zirconium phosphate (ZrP) with thermoresponsive polymer PNIPAM (poly N-isopropylacrylamide). PNIPAM was proved to be covalently grafted onto ZrP. (60)Co γ-rays irradiation produced peroxide groups on the surface which, upon heating, initiated free radical polymerization and subsequent attachment of PNIPAM.

Abstract:In an attempt to synthesize novel zirconium phosphate materials, a series of syntheses have been performed in a deep eutectic solvent (DES), composed of tetrapropylammonium bromide (TPABr) and oxalic acid. As a result, this DES does not act as a template provider in reaction probably owing to the steric effects of the longer chains of the TPA cation, and only the alpha-Zr(HPO4)(2). H2O (alpha-ZrP) phase has been achieved. However, after organic amine was added to the initial reaction mixture in a normal way, the additives did act as a template to induce the zirconium phosphate framework. For example, with 1,4-dimethylpiperazine as an additive, a novel layered compound, [C6H16N2](0.5)Zr-(H0.5PO4)2. H2O (denoted as ZrPO4-DES8) was obtained. Its structure was determined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) data and consists of zirconium phosphate layers with the protonated 1,4-dimethylpiperazine and water molecules in between. Interestingly, the two layered materials as additives in a liquid lubricant exhibit excellent friction behavior with higher load-carrying and antiwear capacities in comparison to typical lubricant additives such as MoS2 and graphite, increase the P-B value of the base oil by 27.2% and 8.5%, and decrease the wear scar diameter of the base oil by 43% and 36%, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy, XRD, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry are used to investigate the lubricant behavior of those materials.

Abstract:The crystals of layered compounds are normally in the shape of disks or plates. Systematic experiments revealed that regular-shaped alpha-zirconium phosphate crystalline disks with a size-to-thickness ratio from 1 to 50 and size polydispersity as low as 0.2 can be obtained through hydrothermal treatment in 3 M to 15 M phosphoric acid solutions. Transmission and scanning electron micrographs revealed that the growth of the disks is mediated by oriented attachment, which happened continuously throughout the hydrothermal treatment between various sized disks. Ostwald ripening is effective in improving the regularity of the shape of the disks, especially under prolonged hydrothermal treatment. Preferred attachment among the flat surfaces of the disks leads to the diverse developments of their size and thickness polydispersities.
The characteristic and osteogenic effect of a nanoporous coating of zirconia implant

Abstract:Zirconia ceramics have become increasingly used as dental implant material which is mainly due to their "tooth-like" color, superior biocompatibility, and excellent mechanical properties. However, the bio-inertness of the zirconia surface limits its use for a wider range of clinical applications. To enhance the surface bioactivity, a combination of magnetron sputtering, and anodization has in the present study been used to deposit a homogeneous nano-porous coating (ZrNP) on the zirconia surface (forming ZrO2/ZrNP with a ZrNP pore diameter of 20-30 nm, and a ZrNP layer thickness of similar to 2 mu m). EDS and XRD analysis showed that the distribution of the surface chemical components, as well as the crystalline structure of the zirconia (ZrO2), remained unchanged. On the other hand, the hydrophilicity of the ZrO2/ZrNP surface became significantly improved (as compared with a control group). In addition, the bond strength of the coating was decreased as a result of the anodization treatment. Moreover, both the Zr and ZrNP nanolayers exhibited improved proliferation and osteogenic properties in the in vitro cell experiment. Also, the ZrNP nanolayer was found to promote the biocompatibility and osteogenic ability to the largest extent. The ZrNP nanolayer did also provide numerous adhesion sites for MC3T3-E1 whereby the cell morphology could be enhanced. Additionally, the nano porous ZrNP layer improved the new bone formation around the zirconia implant and did robustly enhance the push out bond strength, thereby indicating the best osteointegration ability. In conclusion, a nano porous zirconium layer has been found to be very promising for the improvement of the bioactivity of the zirconia implant material.

Abstract:Due to their abundance in natural clay and potential applications in advanced materials, discotic nanoparticles are of interest to scientists and engineers. Growth of such anisotropic nanocrystals through a simple chemical method is a challenging task. In this study, we fabricate discotic nanodisks of zirconium phosphate [Zr(HPO4)2·H2O] as a model material using hydrothermal, reflux and microwave-assisted methods. Growth of crystals is controlled by duration time, temperature, and concentration of reacting species. The novelty of the adopted methods is that discotic crystals of size ranging from hundred nanometers to few micrometers can be obtained while keeping the polydispersity well within control. The layered discotic crystals are converted to monolayers by exfoliation with tetra-(n)-butyl ammonium hydroxide [(C4H9)4NOH, TBAOH]. Exfoliated disks show isotropic and nematic liquid crystal phases. Size and polydispersity of disk suspensions is highly important in deciding their phase behavior.

Abstract:High-intensity ultrasound was applied to the intercalation process of a-zirconium phosphate (alpha-ZrP) with alkylamine, which can increase the reaction rate obviously. In this paper, methylamine was chosen as a colloidal reagent for the exfoliation of a-ZrP, the intercalated compound of hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide(C16) with alpha-ZrP, which could be abbreviated to OZrP, was prepared by "exfoliation-intercalation method", and its structure, morphology and hydrophobic property were characterized and investigated by XRD, TEM, SEM, IR. The results indicated that the OZrP retained layered structure with the d-spacing of 2.9nm. Interestingly, the OZrP presented well hydrophobic property, which may be used as a promising precursor for preparing polymer/alpha-ZrP nanocomposites.

Abstract:<p>2D layered phosphorous compounds (2D LPCs) have led to explosion of research interest in recent years. With the diversity of valence states of phosphorus, 2D LPCs exist in various material types and possess many novel physical and chemical properties. These properties, including widely adjustable range of bandgap, diverse electronic properties covering metal, semimetal, semiconductor and insulator, together with inherent magnetism and ferroelectricity at atomic level, render 2D LPCs greatly promising in the applications of electronics, spintronics, broad‐spectrum optoelectronics, high‐performance catalysts, and energy storage, etc. In this review, the recently research progress of 2D LPCs are presented in detail. First, the 2D LPCs are classified according to their elemental composition and the corresponding crystal structures are introduced, followed by their preparation methods. Then, the novel properties are summarized and the potential applications are discussed in detail. Finally, the conclusion and perspective of the promising 2D LPCs are discussed on the foundation of the latest research progress.</p>

Abstract:This paper reports the first effort to synthesize a new class of inorganic nanostructured materials consisting of alternating ultrathin layers of nanoclays and oxide ceramics. A novel solution-based layer-by-layer (LBL) deposition technique was developed to prepare multilayers of hydrated Zr cations and nanoclays. This LBL deposition technique is devised by integrating an electrostatic-mediated dip coating method for making nanoclay-polymer multilayers with a successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction method for making ultrathin oxide films. Nanostructured clay-zirconia multilayer composites formed through subsequent annealing. Characterization by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction confirmed that these films are uniform and crack-free, consist of no detectable impurities, and possess nanoscale-layered structure. The incorporation of nanoclays facilitates the electrostatic-mediated assembling of multilayers, enhances the structural integrity, and provides a generic framework to construct functionally graded materials. Potential applications are envisaged.

Abstract:The design of advanced functional materials with nanometer- and micrometer-scale control over their properties is of considerable interest for both fundamental and applied studies because of the many potential applications for these materials in the fields of biomedical materials, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine. The layer-by-layer deposition technique introduced in the early 1990s by Decher, Moehwald, and Lvov is a versatile technique, which has attracted an increasing number of researchers in recent years due to its wide range of advantages for biomedical applications: ease of preparation under "mild" conditions compatible with physiological media, capability of incorporating bioactive molecules, extra cellular matrix components and biopolymers in the films, tunable mechanical properties, and spatio-temporal control over film organization. The last few years have seen a significant increase in reports exploring the possibilities offered by diffusing molecules into films to control their internal structures or design "reservoirs", as well as control their mechanical properties. Such properties, associated with the chemical properties of films, are particularly important for designing biomedical devices that contain bioactive molecules. In this review, we highlight recent work on designing and controlling film properties at the nanometer and micrometer scales with a view to developing new biomaterial coatings, tissue engineered constructs that could mimic in vivo cellular microenvironments, and stem cell "niches".

Abstract:This study presents the design, processing, properties and potential applications of a novel layered bio-ceramic composites consisting of three different micro-porous calcium phosphate coatings on strong zirconia cores manufactured using a recently developed slip coating-deposition and coating-substrate co-sintering technique. Detailed microstructures of the three graded micro-porous calcium phosphate coatings, and the coating/substrate interface have been investigated. Also, the flexural strength of the bio-ceramic composite and the bonding state between the coatings and zirconia substrate have been characterized. A preliminary and limited in vitro cell test indicates that the new scaffold composite has no cytotoxicity to the fibroblasts which can attach, proliferate and grow on the coating surfaces. Because of the combination of bio-function and strength, such layered load-bearing bio-ceramic composites are a potential candidate for large-scale head bone repairs.

Abstract:As a typical cation-exchangeable layered compound, layered titanate has a unique open layered structure. Its excellent physical and chemical properties allow its wide use in the energy, environmental protection, electronics, biology, and other fields. This paper reviews the recent progress in the research on the structure, synthesis, properties, and application of layered titanates. Various reactivities, as well as the advantages and disadvantages, of different synthetic methods are discussed. The reaction mechanism and influencing factors of the ion exchange reaction, intercalation reaction, and exfoliation reaction are analyzed. The latest research progress on layered titanates and their modified products in the fields of photocatalysis, adsorption, electrochemistry, and other applications is summarized. Finally, the future development of layered titanate and its exfoliated product two-dimensional nanosheets is proposed.

Abstract:Herein, initially, we present a general overview of the global financial support for chemistry devoted to materials science, specifically intercalation layered compounds (ILCs). Subsequently, the strategies to synthesise these host structures and the corresponding guest-host hybrid assemblies are exemplified on the basis of some families of materials, including pillared clays (PILCs), porous clay heterostructures (PCHs), zirconium phosphate (ZrP), layered double hydroxides (LDHs), graphite intercalation compounds (GICs), graphene-based materials, and MXenes. Additionally, a non-exhaustive survey on their possible application in the field of energy through electrochemical storage, mostly as electrode materials but also as electrolyte additives, is presented, including lithium technologies based on lithium ion batteries (LIBs), and beyond LiBs with a focus on possible alternatives such XIBs (X = Na (NIB), K (KIB), Al (AIB), Zn (ZIB), and Cl (CIB)), reversible Mg batteries (RMBs), dual-ion batteries (DIBs), Zn-air and Zn-sulphur batteries and supercapacitors as well as their relevance in other fields related to (opto)electronics. This selective panorama should help readers better understand the reason why ILCs are expected to meet the challenge of tomorrow as electrode materials.

Abstract:Intercalation compounds represent a unique class of materials that can be anisotropic (1D and 2D-based topology) or isotropic (3D) by their guest/ host superlattice repetitive organization. Intercalation refers to the reversible introduction of guest species with variable nature into a crystalline host lattice. Different host lattice structures have been used for the preparation of intercalation compounds and a lot of examples are given by exploiting the flexibility and the ability of 2D-based hosts to accommodate different guest species, spanning from ions to complex molecules. This reaction is then carried out to allow a systematic control and a fine tuning of the final properties of the derived compounds thus allowing to use them for various applications. This review mainly focuses on the recent applications of intercalation layered compounds (ILCs) based on layered clays, zirconium phosphates, layered double hydroxides and graphene as heterogeneous catalysts, for environmental purposes and health, aiming at collecting and discussing how intercalation processes can be exploited for the selected applications.

Studies on the intercalation of n-alkylamine and n-amino-alcohol in layered zirconium phosphate

Abstract:For the purpose of preparing pillared phosphates, the intercalation of n-alkylamine and n-amino-alcohol in layered alpha-Zr(HPO4)(2) . H2O(alpha-ZrP) and its effect on the structure and properties of the layered phosphate have been investigated in detail, It was found that the delamination degree is related with the nature and the amount of amine added, and the extent of HPO42- hydrolysis is dependent both on the basicity of the amine and the delamination degree, The delaminated sheets are metastable, and they may recover their ordered arrangement and experience phase transformations in air, The XRD results and the approximate calculation of the model structures of the intercalates show that a bilayer orientation of the n-alkylamine and n-amino-alcohol molecules is formed when the intercalates are saturated, After long time exposure in air, the intercalates of methylamine and ethylamine will lose about 50% of the amine and transfer to a monolayer orientation, but the intercalates of n-propylamine, n-butylamine and n-animo-alcohol still keep a bilayer orientation.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) inorganic layered nanoplatelets exhibit superior lubricating properties in both solid states and oil dispersions. In this paper, we have systematically investigated the effects of surface and interlayer modifications on the tribological performance of layered α-zirconium phosphate (ZrP) nanoplatelets in mineral oil. The pristine layered ZrP nanoplatelets were first reacted with silanes of different alkyl chains to achieve outer surface modifications, followed by intercalation with different alkyl amines to alter the interlayer spacing. Friction and anti-wear studies on ZrP nanoplatelets with various modifications in mineral oils suggest that a longer alkyl chain on the outer surfaces along with a small increase in interlayer spacing would lead to a better tribological behavior especially under a relatively heavy load condition. Our results illustrate the ability of tuning the tribological properties of 2D layered nanoplatelets in oils by varying their surface and interlayer functionalities and would be helpful for understanding the underlying tribological mechanisms of nanolubricating oils containing 2D layered nanoplatelets. Abstract:Adding α-ZrP with layered structure and ZrO2 powder into the liquid electrolyte of dye sensitized solar cell, the charge transport of the electrolyte was improved. The optimum results were achieved at about 3%(mass fraction)for both powder. Through the electrochemical analyses, it was revealed that the improvement by adding the inorganic powders was mainly attributed to the similar effects: particle surface and enhanced Grothus mechanism.

Abstract:Due to its structural anisotropy , novel physical and chemical properties , and multifunctionality,layered double hydroxides (LDHs) has been widely used in the field of materials science. Focusing on the study in recent years on thin-film materials based on LDHs,the paper is aimed to summarize the basic forces of the thin-film material produced by layer-by-layer self-assembly method (such as electrostatic adsorption,hydrogen bonding,etc.),and to expound LDHs assembled with inorganic molecules (montmorillonite,manganese dioxide,graphene,etc.),organic molecules (such as poly (vinyl alcohol),fluorescent dyes,polystyrene sulfonate,etc.) and so on. Applications of thin film on light,electricity,catalysis,biology-inorganic materials are also discussed in detail. With the basic research on preparation,chemical composition and the main forces for assembling in depth, as well as the functionality and practical application of the LBL technology being mature,the thin-film materials based on LDHs via LBL method have a profound impact in many fields including materials, chemical,biological,and other high-tech areas.
