Abstract:This paper investigates the nonexistence of a specific kind of periodic solutions in a class of nonlinear dynamical systems with cylindrical phase space. Those types of systems can be viewed as an interconnection of several simpler subsystems with the interconnecting structure specified by a permutation matrix. Frequency-domain conditions as well as linear matrix inequalities conditions for nonexistence of limit cycles of the second kind are established. The main results also define the frequency range on which cycles of the second kind of the system cannot exist. Based on this LMI approach, an estimate of the frequency of cycles of the second kind can be explicitly computed by solving a generalized eigenvalue minimization problem. Numerical results demonstrate the applicability and validity of the proposed method and show the effect of nonlinear interconnections on dynamical behavior of entire interconnected systems.

Abstract:Research on delayed neural networks with variable self-inhibitions, interconnection weights, and inputs is an important issue. In this paper, we discuss a large class of delayed dynamical systems with almost periodic self-inhibitions, inter-connection weights, and inputs. This model is universal and includes delayed systems with time-varying delays, distributed delays as well as combination of both. We prove that under some mild conditions, the system has a unique almost periodic solution, which is globally exponentially stable. We propose a new approach, which is independent of existing theory concerning with existence of almost periodic solution for dynamical systems.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish two different existence results of positive periodic solutions for second order non-autonomous singular dynamical systems. The first one is based on a nonlinear alternative principle of Leray–Schauder and the result is applicable to the case of a strong singularity as well as the case of a weak singularity. The second one is based on Schauder's fixed point theorem and the result sheds some new light on problems with weak singularities and proves that in some situations weak singularities may help create periodic solutions. Recent results in the literature are generalized and significantly improved.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate dynamical behaviors of a large class of delayed differential systems with discontinuous right-hand side. This class of delayed differential systems includes Hopfield and Cellular neural networks with discontinuous activations as special cases. We prove that under some mild conditions, this system has a unique almost-periodic solution, which is globally exponential stable.

Abstract:For a class of $(N+1)$-dimensional systems of differential delay equations with a cyclic and monotone negative feedback structure, we construct a two-dimensional invariant manifold, on which phase curves spiral outward towards a bounding periodic orbit. For this to happen we assume essentially only instability of the zero equilibrium. Methods of the Poincaré-Bendixson theory due to Mallet-Paret and Sell are combined with techniques used by Walther for the scalar case $(N = 0)$. Statements on the attractor location and on parameter borders concerning stability and oscillation are included. The results apply to models for gene regulatory systems, e.g. the `repressilator' system.

Abstract:For C1-smooth strongly monotone discrete-time dynamical systems, it is shown that ``convergence to linearly stable cycles" is a prevalent asymptotic behavior in the measuretheoretic sense. The results are then applied to classes of time-periodic parabolic equations and give new results on prevalence of convergence to periodic solutions. In particular, for equations with Neumann boundary conditions on convex domains, we show the prevalence of the set of initial conditions corresponding to the solutions that converge to spatiallyhomogeneous periodic solutions. While, for equations on radially symmetric domains, we obtain the prevalence of the set of initial values corresponding to solutions that are asymptotic to radially symmetric periodic solutions.

Abstract:The Lotka-Volterra model of interacting populations is useful in the design of competitive self-organizing systems and neural networks. This paper investigates the dynamical behavior of periodic Lotka-Volterra systems with general time delays. Some sufficient conditions independent of inputs and delays are obtained for the boundedness of trajectories and the global stability of nonnegative periodic solutions. These conditions are expressed in M-matrices and easy to verify. Copyright ©2007 Watam Press.

Abstract and Applied Analysis

Abstract:Firstly, we propose a concept of uniformly almost periodic functions on almost periodic time scales and investigate some basic properties of them. When time scale T = R or Z , our definition of the uniformly almost periodic functions is equivalent to the classical definitions of uniformly almost periodic functions and the uniformly almost periodic sequences, respectively. Then, based on these, we study the existence and uniqueness of almost periodic solutions and derive some fundamental conditions of admitting an exponential dichotomy to linear dynamic equations. Finally, as an application of our results, we study the existence of almost periodic solutions for an almost periodic nonlinear dynamic equations on time scales.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the destabilization of synchronous periodic solutions for patch models. By applying perturbation theory for matrices, we derive asymptotic expressions of the Floquet spectra and provide a destabilization criterion for synchronous periodic solutions arising from closed orbits or degenerate Hopf bifurcations in terms of period functions. Finally, we apply the main results to the well-known two-patch Holling-Tanner model.

Abstract:For quasilinear hyperbolic systems with time-periodic boundary conditions possessing a dissipative structure, the existence, uniqueness and stability of the time-periodic classical solutions are proved. Moreover, the feedback boundary control with dissipative structure can stabilize the system around the time-periodic solution, provided that the time-periodic boundary conditions are W-2,W-infinity smooth. Abstract:The periodic problem of evolution inclusion is studied and its results are used to establish existence theorems of periodic solutions of a class of semi-linear differential inclusion. Also existence theorem of the extreme solutions and the strong relaxation theorem are given for this class of semi-linear differential inclution. An application to some feedback control systems is discussed.

Abstract:We first establish the Morse decomposition theory of periodic invariant sets for non-autonomous periodic general dynamical systems (set-valued dynamical systems). Then we discuss the stability of Morse decompositions of periodic uniform forward attractors. We also apply the abstract results to non-autonomous periodic differential inclusions with only upper semi-continuous right-hand side. We show that Morse decompositions are robust with respect to both internal and external perturbations (upper semi-continuity of Morse sets). Finally as an application we study the effect of small time delays to asymptotic behavior of control systems from the point of view of Morse decompositions.

Abstract:In this brief, dynamical systems with unbounded time-varying delays are investigated. Two approaches are developed to derive sufficient conditions ensuring the existence, uniqueness of the equilibrium and its global stability. Moreover, different from globally asymptotical stability and globally exponential stability, a new concept of stability, global power stability, is proposed. Under mild conditions, we prove that the dynamical systems with unbounded time-varying delays are globally power stable.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to study the asymptotic behavior of the time-dependent solutions to a coupled system of reaction-diffusion equations with periodic coefficients in unbounded domains, including the whole space R-n, the exterior Omega(e) of a bounded domain and the half-space R-+(n) = {x = (x(1), . . . , x(n)) is an element of R-n; x(n) > 0}, under Dirichlet boundary conditions. It is shown that if the reaction function in the system possesses a mixed quasi monotone property and the corresponding periodic system has a pair of coupled upper and lower solutions then the periodic system has a pair of quasi-solutions and the sector between the quasi-solutions is an attractor of the system of periodic reaction-diffusion equations. Under some additional conditions this attractor leads to the asymptotic stability of a periodic solution for the periodic system. The approach to the problem is based on the method of upper and lower solutions, a ladder argument and a bootstrap technique. Finally, a competitor-competitor-mutualist model is given to illustrate the obtained results.
