Abstract:This paper concentrates on the new nonlinear optical phenomena generated under the femtosecond laser irradiation. Generally, the laser power density is around 10(10)W/cm(2) (1mJ/cm(2) at 100femtosecond) without focusing, and could be 10(12)W/cm(2) with self-focusing process. Although the laser power density is lower than the internal atomic field (similar to10(16)W/cm(2)) and the electron movement is still bonded to the internal atomic field, some processes, such as multi-photon absorption, multi-photon ionization, optical Kerr effect as well as tunnel ionization in glass, are much easier to occur. In this paper, the phenomena of photo-induced refractive index change, photoinduced darkening, photo-induced phase change, as well as photo-induced second harmonic generation in glass under irradiation of femtosecond laser are introduced, The related interaction mechanisms are also discussed.

Abstract:The development of femtosecond laser introduced a brand-new field in the research of glass. In this paper, the research on the glass using femtosecond laser in the world has been reviewed, including photo-induced damage, photo-induced darking, photo-induced refractive index change, photo-induced reduction of rare-earth ion, photo-induced micro-crystallization of glass, photo-induced long lasting phosphorescence and so on. These phenomena have a broad usage,especially in optical storage, fabrication of optical wave-guide, photo crystal, three-dimensional display device and three-dimensional optical circuit, as well as in engraving inside transparent material.

Abstract:The features of photosensitive defects in germanium doped silica glass under the irradiation of 488 nm argon laser and 193 nm ArF excimer laser are studied. The measurement of UV-induced absorption bands and photoluminescence changes and the experiment on electron spin resonance are carried out. The structural models of two defects are presented. The bleaching dynamics of absorption with laser irradiation is analyzed. The photosensitive processes with different laser sources are discussed.

Abstract:Integrated photonics have attracted considerable attention and have been applied in both classical and quantum optics,thus fulfilling the requirements for modern optical communication experiments.Due to the remarkable flexibility in the design of optical properties,glass materials are a current focus of extensive research for their potential in integrated photonic devices.In the field of glass materials,the diverse functional micro/nanostructures directly written inside glass by ultrafast lasers have received widespread attention from researchers.In this review,the research progress in ultrafast laser-induced controllable structures in glass is briefly described with an emphasis on the transition from controllable complex physical fields to materials chemistry.The future trends of research are also prospected.

Abstract:Numerous innovations in photonics have been realized on the basis of nonlinear optical properties, notably in information technologies. To take advantage of the nonlinear optical properties of glass, multidisciplinary research efforts were necessary, combining optics, glass chemistry, material science, as well as development of optical or electrical polarizations processes. This chapter addresses both fundamental aspects of nonlinear optical responses and also the exploitation of nonlinear optical phenomena in glassy material. It starts by a general introduction to nonlinear optical phenomena and concepts. Then, the specific cases of second and third optical responses in glasses are treated separately and described in detail as a function of the corresponding optical phenomena, the various glass families, and their applications.

Abstract:Functional crystal growth induced by laser irradiation in glass materials has attracted a lot of interests because this method demonstrated potential applications for producing integrated optical devices.In most cases,the laser energy can be absorbed by the glass due to the linear or nonlinear absorption mechanism,which resulted in a locally effect for the glass melting and then for the growth of crystal in the focal point of the laser beam.We present here some recent advances related to the laser-induced-crystal technique and its applications for integrated optics.We also suggest future research directions in this field.

Abstract:The optical properties of glasses irradiated by high-power, 810 nn femtosecond laser have been studied. Laser-induced processes occurred at irradiation well below the threshold for laser-induced damage. The visible absorption spectra of the original and irradiated glass were measured and darkening lines were found in the irradiated region. According to absorption spectra, the absorption of glass was increased greatly after irradiation by femtosecond laser. The absorption of the irradiated glass decreased along with time and reached stabilization in about 90 minutes. The laser-induced darkening in the glass disappeared when the glass was heat-treated under 200 degreesC for a few minutes. It was considered that darkening was induced by color-center formation because of glass matrix photoionization and the consequent trapping of electrons and holes by intrinsic or impurity defect of the glass. This process is expected to become a useful method used to fabricate optical memory with both an ultra-high storage density and an ultra-high recording and readout speed.

Abstract:Laser induced modification and damage in transparent materials (e.g., glass) has attracted considerable interest and been studied since the advent of high power pulsed lasers. Especially while using a femtosecond laser as the irradiation source, the tight focusing and nonlinear nature of the absorption make it possible to confine the absorption to the focal volume inside the bulk of the material, allowing for micromaching in extremely small region. In this talk, we introduce the progress in space-selective modification of glass by using femtosecond laser. We show that some fundamental processes, including valence state change of dopant, decomposition of cluster, element redistribution, phase transition and nanocrystallization, can occur in the femtosecond laser irradiation region inside glass. As a result, the optical response of the modified glass can be controlled. For examples, the luminescence properties of main group ions doped glass can be tuned and tunable luminescence can be achieved. The microstructures with multicolor luminescence can be induced. The results suggest that space-selective modification of glass by using femtosecond laser can be applied to fabricate various types of 3D active microstructures.

Abstract:Optical nonlinearities of Au nanoparticles precipitated inside glasses induced by irradiation of a focused femtosecond laser were investigated using Z-scan technique with 8 ns pulses at 532 nm. The transformation behaviors both from self-defocusing to self-focusing and from saturable absorption to reverse saturable absorption were observed in the glass samples, which depend drastically on the irradiation power density of the femtosecond laser used. The optical nonlinearities were analyzed in detail and proved numerically by the excited-state theory of conduction band electrons.

Abstract:Femtosecond laser has been widely used in microscopic modifications to materials due to its ultra-short laser pulse and ultrahigh light intensity. When a transparent material e.g. glass is irradiated by a tightly focused femtosecond laser, the photo-induced reaction is expected to occur only near the focused part of the laser beam inside the glass due to the multiphoton processes. We observed various induced structures e.g. color center defects, refractive index change, micro-void and micro-crack, in glasses after the femtosecond laser irradiation. In this paper, we review the femtosecond laser induced phenomena and discuss the mechanisms of the observed phenomena. We also introduce the fabrication of various micro-optical components, e.g. optical waveguide, micro-grating, micro-lens, fiber attenuator, 3-dimensional optical memory by using the femtosecond laser-induced structures. Abstract:Photosensitivity in photo-thermo-refractive (PTR) glass can be triggered by UV and near-infrared fs laser irradiation. Here we focus on the nonlinear photochemical process triggered by ultrashort laser Gaussian-Bessel beams. The transmission and absorption spectra show that the primary difference between UV and fs laser exposure is the formation of color centers and kinetic process of silver nanoparticles growth. It is contributed to the nonlinear ionization of PTR glass matrix and thermal effects during interaction of glass matrix and ultrashort laser pulses. Transmission electron microscopy verifies the generation of nanoscale crystals in the irradiated region, and X-ray diffraction shows the existence of quartz crystal and NaF after laser irradiation and thermal treatment. Moreover, the dependence of photochemical reaction on laser parameters is investigated, as well as the tailoring of silver nanoparticles. On this basis, volume Bragg gratings with ultrashort laser Gaussian-Bessel beams are inscribed as an application which possess good diffraction characteristics.

Abstract:The availability of laser pulses with femtosecond duration allows materials to be subjected to higher light intensity than ever before, opening the door to the study of laser / material interactions in a new regime. Various microstructures induced by femtosecond laser have been reported, such as color centers, voids, and refractive index change. In this article, we review our recent research findings on the femtosecond laser induced microstructures in glasses, which are not only helpful for understanding the interaction process between the ultrafast laser and the glassy materials, but also valuable for the fabrication of integrated optical elements.

Abstract:Glass ceramics may exhibit enhanced functionalities compared to the glass and crystal counterparts due to the synergistic effect with the "1+1 > 2" feature in a cooperative manner. Nonlinear optical property is expected to be next breakthrough in presenting synergistic effect in glass ceramics. In this article, we give a comprehensive review of the recent progress of the development in nonlinear glass ceramics with unique photonic domain structure, emphasizing their synergistic effect in nonlinear response. The applications in photonics of the nonlinear glass ceramics are also described. Finally, we also present the opportunities and challenges for further exploring synergistic effect in nonlinear response in glass ceramics.

Abstract:We fabricated lead nanocrystals inside a specially designed borosilicate glass by two parallel approaches, thermal stimulation and femtosecond laser irradiation. Thermal treatment can precipitate lead nanocrystals inside whole glass, while femtosecond laser irradiation can induce lead nanocrystals within selective area of glass. The fabricated nanocomposite exhibits large third-order optical nonlinearity and ultrafast response time, which is suitable for fabrication of ultrafast optical switches. Furthermore, the femtosecond laser induced refractive index difference between lead crystalline and glass is about 0.13, which is enough to fabricate optical devices such as photonic crystals.

Abstract:Nonlinear optical properties of femtosecond laser-induced micro-structures containing gold nanoparticles in silicate glasses were investigated by using Z-scan technique with 8ns pulses at 532nm. Optical limiting effects of such structures were also measured. The experimental results were found to be significantly variable for the microstructures under different induction conditions. Strong optical nonlinearities in these yielded structures can be attributed to the surface plasmon absorption of gold nanoparticles precipitated in glasses. These microstructures exhibiting large optical nonlinearities are inferred to be useful for the fabrication of integrated ultrafast optical switching and laser protection devices.
