Abstract:By selecting phase-separable glass system Na2O-Al2O3-B2O3-SiO 2 as the base glass and by introducing Cu+, I- from the starting materials CuO/SnO and Nal respectively, Cul microcrystal doped borosilicate glasses have been prepared successfully. The microcrystal and its distribution in the glass medium are observed by means of X-ray diffraction and HRTEM. The effects of heating treatment on the optical absorption of glasses is studied through the room transmission spectra of glasses. The electroinduced second harmonic generation in the glasses is reported. The mechanism of this effect is also discussed.

Abstract:Second harmonic generation has been observed in electrically polarized CuCl-microcrystallite-doped glass. The glass was prepared by means of melting–quenching method and poled at 200°C for 1 h under applied dc field of 4 kV. The incident angular variation of SHG intensity for the polarized glass was measured. To explain the effect, it is proposed that the second-order nonlinear polarization results from the dipolar orientation in the glass.

Abstract:Photoinduced second harmonic generation is observed in CuI microcrystallite doped glass prepared by the sol-gel process when the glass has been irradiated with intense 1.06 μm and frequency doubled laser beams from a mode-locked Nd:YAG laser. It is verified that the signal is produced from a second-order nonlinear process by the dependence of the signal intensity on input power. It is found that the signal intensity increases with the irradiation time and gradually approaches saturation. The effect may be explained reasonably by the DC field model.

Abstract:Utilizing Maker fringe method, second-harmonic generation (SHG) of electrical poled chalcogenide glasses in the GeS2 systems including GeS2-X2S3-CdS (X=Ga, Sb) and GeS2-Ga2S3- Y2S3 (Y=P, As, Sb) were studied. The experiment results indicate that the values of second-order nonlinearity induced in chalcogenide glasses have tight relations with glass composition and poling conditions, and the mechanism can be explained by dipole reorientation model.

Abstract:The second-order optical nonlinearity of poled Ge25Sb10S65 chalcogenide glass was found to be 40–50% larger after femtosecond laser irradiation. The highest χ(2) was 11.4pm/V. Raman spectral change indicated that centrosymmetric defects were created by fs light. These defects promoted the third-order optical nonlinearity of the glass and as a result, its second-order nonlinearity was also enhanced. The study shows that fs laser modification is an effective method of increasing the optical nonlinearity of photonic materials.

Abstract:Ultrafast third-order nonlinear optical responses of GeSe2–In2Se3–CsI chalcohalide glasses have been measured by using optical Kerr effect (OKE) technique at 1064nm. The obtained third-order nonlinear susceptibility χ(3) and nonlinear refractive index n2 are as large as 9.46×10−12esu and 6.5×10−14cm2/W, respectively. The relationship between glass compositions and the third-order nonlinear optical responses was analyzed by Raman spectra in terms of structural evolution. It is suggested that the tetrahedral units play an important role in the ultrafast third-order nonlinear optical responses of these chalcohalide glasses. The present glass is a promising material for all-optical switching devices.

Abstract:We report that the nonlinear refractive index (n2) of As2S3 glass can be enhanced after irradiation by a femtosecond laser but suppressed after irradiation by a continuous-wave (cw) laser, although both the femtosecond laser and cw laser induce photodarkening in the glass. Photodarkening by the femtosecond laser increases n2 by as much as 50%, while irradiation by a subbandgap cw laser decreases n2 by as much as 60% of its original value. The results provide a way to manipulate the third-order optical nonlinearity of this photonic glass. Mechanisms of the optical nonlinearity changes are discussed.

Abstract:We fabricated lead nanocrystals inside a specially designed borosilicate glass by two parallel approaches, thermal stimulation and femtosecond laser irradiation. Thermal treatment can precipitate lead nanocrystals inside whole glass, while femtosecond laser irradiation can induce lead nanocrystals within selective area of glass. The fabricated nanocomposite exhibits large third-order optical nonlinearity and ultrafast response time, which is suitable for fabrication of ultrafast optical switches. Furthermore, the femtosecond laser induced refractive index difference between lead crystalline and glass is about 0.13, which is enough to fabricate optical devices such as photonic crystals.

Abstract:After thermally poled, second-harmonic generation was observed from 0.85GeS2·0.1Sb2S3·0.05CdS chalcogenide glass by using the Maker fringe method, and the second-order nonlinearity (SON) susceptibility, χ(2), is 9pm/V at maximum. The stability of SON is excellent and its theoretical decaying time according to the thermally stimulated depolarization current (TSDC) measurement is as long as 654 days. The origin of SON, the effects of poling parameters and the reasons of angle variation of maximum SH intensity in Maker fringe, were discussed based on dipole reorientation model. With its large and stable SON, this novel nonlinear chalcogenide glass is a very promising material that can be applied to many optical fields in the future.

Abstract:Two series of metal iodide doped chalcohalide glasses (100−2x)GeS2·xGa2S3·xPbI2 (0⩽x⩽20) and (100−x)(0.8GeS2·0.2Ga2S3)·xPbI2 (0⩽x⩽15) were prepared and characterized. The microstructure of these glasses has been studied by Raman scattering spectra. Utilizing femtosecond time-resolved optical Kerr effect (OKE) technique at the wavelength of 820nm, a largest third-order nonlinearity χ(3) of 2.07×10−13esu was obtained for the 90GeS2·5Ga2S3·5PbI2 glass, and it decreases with the addition of PbI2 in both two series. After thermally poled, second-harmonic generation (SHG) has been observed in these glasses according to Maker fringe method and a large second-order nonlinearity χ(2) as well as 4pm/V was obtained for the 70GeS2·15Ga2S3·15PbI2 glass. The variations of χ(2) and χ(3) on glass composition are ascribed to the evolution of micro-structural units in glass. These novel chalcohalide glasses would be expected to be the promising candidate materials for nonlinear optical devices.

Abstract:The second-order nonlinearities in thermally poled lead borate glasses were studied. After poling with different electrodes, both bulk and near surface second-order nonlinearities were obtained. The second harmonic generation signal from near surface effect was two orders of magnitude larger than the bulk effect. By simulating the poling process with a multiple carrier model, we concluded that the bulk second-order nonlinearity was caused by the deficiency of Pb2+ in a thick layer after poling, and the near surface second-order nonlinearity was caused by the depletion of H+ in a thin layer when H+ injection from the atmosphere was blocked.

Abstract:The third-order optical nonlinearity of chalcogenide glass was investigated with the femtosecond optical Kerr gate system. With the long durative irradiation of the laser field, the ultrafast optical Kerr signal was observed to increase continuously till saturation. It was also found that this enhancement is anisotropic with respect to the laser polarization. Based on the intimate valence alteration pairs (IVAP) model, we explained this enhancement in terms of the light-induced orientation of valence alteration pairs.
Boosted Second Harmonic Generation and Cascaded Sum Frequency Generation from a Surface Crystallized Glass Ceramic Microcavity

Abstract:The development of novel materials and structures for efficient second-order nonlinear micro/nano devices remains a significant challenge. In this study, the remarkable enhancement of second-harmonic generation (SHG) and cascaded sum frequency generation in whispering gallery mode microspheres made of surface-crystallized glass with a 6-µm Ba2TiSi2O8 crystal layer are demonstrated. Attributed to the core-shell design, the Ba2TiSi2O8 located on the surface can be efficiently coupled with whispering gallery modes, resulting in a highly efficient micron-scale cavity-enhanced second-order optical nonlinearity. Greatly enhanced SHG of the microcavity is observed, which is up to 80 times stronger than that of a non-resonant sample. Furthermore, owing to the wavelength non-selectivity of random quasi-phase matching, ultra-wideband SHG with a strong response ranging from 860 to 1600 nm and high-contrast polarization characteristics is demonstrated. The glass-ceramic-based microsphere cavity also boosts the cascading optical nonlinearity, manifested by a two-magnitude enhancement of cascaded sum frequency generation. This work delineates an efficient strategy for boosting nonlinear optical response in glass ceramics, which will open up new opportunities for applications in photonics and optical communications.

Abstract:Third-order optical nonlinearities, chi((3)) of GeS(2)-Ga(2)S(3)-AgCl chalcohalide glasses have been studied systematically utilizing the femtosecond time-resolved optical Kerr effect (OKE) technique at 820nm, showing that the value of chi((3)) enhances with increasing atomic ratio of (S+Cl/2)/(Ge+Ga). From the compositional dependence of glass structure by Raman spectra, a strong dependence of chi;(3) upon glass structure has been found, i.e. compared with [Cl(x)S(3-x)Ge(Ga)-Ge(Ga)S(3-x)Cl(x)] ethane-like s.u. as the structural defectiveness, [Ge(Ga)S(4-x)Cl(x)] mixed tetrahedra make greater contribution to the enhancement of chi((3)). The maximum chi(3) among the present glasses is as large as 5.26x10(-13)esu (A1 (80GeS(2)-10Ga(2)S(3-) 10AgCl)), and the nonlinear refractive index (n2) of A1 glass is also up to 4.60x10(-15) cm(2)/W. In addition, using Maker fringe technique, SHG was observed in the representative A1 glass poled by electron beam (25 kV, 25 nA, 15 min), and the second-order optical nonlinear susceptibility is estimated to be greater than 6.1 pm/V. There was no evident structural change detected in the as-prepared and after irradiated A1 glass by the Raman spectra, and maybe only electronic transition and distortion of electron cloud occurred in the glasses. The large third/second-order optical nonlinearities have made these GeS(2)-Ga(2)S(3)-AgCl chalcohalide glasses as promising materials applied in photoelectric fields.

Abstract:With the method of Maker fringe, second-harmonic generation (SHG) was observed in Ge–As–S glasses irradiated by electron beam. It is related to the space–charge electrostatic field which makes the glasses poled and breaks the centrosymmetry of the glasses. So one new ministructure is formed and can keep constant for a long time, which makes the glasses difficult to restore relaxationally to its origin state and induces SHG. Second-order nonlinearity χ(2) as high as 0.8 pm/V was obtained. The results of thermally stimulated depolarization current measurements indicated that the poled regions were located at the superficial layers of the glass surfaces (several micrometers), which were the same as the calculated result in theory. The nonlinearities in Ge–As–S glasses are stable.
Influence of electrical poling conditions on electroinduced second order nonlinearity in fused silica

Abstract:It is found that the second harmonic generation in fused silica caused by electrical poling at elevated temperature is dependent upon the electrical poling temperature and voltage. By poling glasses with a certain voltage, the second harmonic generation (SHG) intensity acquires a maximum value at a moderate temperature, while the SHG intensity increases with the rise of poling voltage and reaches the saturation gradually when the poling temperature is fixed. The experimental results can be explained reasonably by the dipole orientation model for the electroinduced second order nonlinear polarization in glasses.

Abstract:New chalcohalide glasses from the GeS2–Ga2S3–CdI2 glassy system have been prepared using the well-established melt-quenching method and its glass-forming region was given in this paper. According to the comprehensive consideration of thermal properties, the glass with the composition 0.8GeS2–0.1Ga2S3–0.1CdI2 was estimated to be the optimum composition within the studied glassy system. And its nonlinear refractive index n2 of this glassy sample was estimated to be 7.5×10−15cm2/W according to femtosecond time-resolved optical Kerr gate (OKG) measurement technique. The full width at half-maximum of the third-order correlation signal was 155fs. Widely transmittance window, good glass-forming ability, higher χ(3) and large electronic ultrafast OKG response make these glasses the potential applications in current photonic field such as ultra-fast all-optical switching devices.
