Abstract:The decrement factor and phase shift are two important criteria for evaluating the thermal performance of walls, which has a great impact on building energy consumption. The two indicators are influenced by several factors, such as physical properties, thickness, indoor convective heat transfer coefficient, and outdoor air temperature fluctuation period. The physical properties of walls are also related to its thermal conductivity, specific heat capacity, and density. In the present study, a theoretical analysis is performed to investigate the relationship between these influencing factors and the two indicators, and an analytical solution is presented for the decrement factor and phase shift. The findings emphasize that for a single-layer wall, its decrement factor and phase shift are only determined by two key factors: the dimensionless thickness and the dynamic Biot number. When the dynamic Biot number is less than 1, the decrement factor is decreased by nearly 5 times as the dimensionless thickness varies from 0 to 1. On the other hand, when the dynamic Biot number is greater than 1 and the dimensionless thickness varies from 0 to 1, the decrement factor decreases even more. For instance, when the dynamic Biot number reaches a large value of 9, the decrement factor decreases by nearly 20 times. As the dimensionless thickness varies from 0 to 2, the phase shift increases by almost 120 degrees.
