Abstract:This paper presented an experimental investigation on the shear behaviors of reinforced strain hardening cementitious composite (RSHCC) beams under a concentrated load, where SHCC shows prominent tensile strain-hardening and multiple-cracking characteristics. Six RSHCC beams with different shear-span ratios and web reinforcement ratios, as well as six reinforced concrete (RC) counterparts, were tested. The shear-span ratios were about 2.0, 3.0 and 4.0, and the web reinforcement ratios were designed as 0 and 0.37%, respectively. The experimental results revealed that for RUHTCC slender beams with shear-span ratio beyond 3.0 and about 3.25% longitudinal reinforcement ratio, the use of detailing web reinforcement can transform the brittle shear failure to ductile flexure-shear failure. In contrast, the short RSHCC beams with shear-span ratio of about 2.0 and detailing stirrups presented the brittle shear failure but the shear bearing capacity was almost close to that of RC short beam. In comparison with RSHCC slender beams without web stirrups, RSHCC beams with stirrups showed slightly larger ultimate shear strength because the yielding of reinforcement limited the full play of shear capacity of SHCC. The stable crack propagation behavior was presented in RSHCC beams with and without stirrups, whereas the propagation mechanism was different from that of RC short beam. The multiple diagonal cracking was shown in all the RSHCC beams and, the maximum crack width was about 0.3 mm at the ultimate load state as well as merely 0.1 mm at the service state, which is far lower than the crack width of compared RC beam. The current investigation provided a significant reference for the application at the key shear position of engineering structures.
