Abstract:For real or complex Hilbert spaces, we consider the class of linear mappings, which approximately preserve orthogonality. We prove that such mappings are bounded. Next, we give a sufficient condition for a linear mapping to be approximately orthogonality preserving mapping.

Abstract:Let $H$ and $K$ be two complex inner product spaces with dim$(X)\geq 2$. We prove that for each non-zero additive mapping $A:H \to K$ with dense image the following statements are equivalent: $(a)$ $A$ is (complex) linear or conjugate-linear mapping and there exists $\gamma >0$ such that $\| A (x) \| = \gamma \|x\|$, for all $x\in X$, that is, $A$ is a positive scalar multiple of a linear or a conjugate-linear isometry; $(b)$ There exists $\gamma_1 >0$ such that one of the next properties holds for all $x,y \in H$: $(b.1)$ $\langle A(x) |A(y)\rangle = \gamma_1 \langle x|y\rangle,$ $(b.2)$ $\langle A(x) |A(y)\rangle = \gamma_1 \langle y|x \rangle;$ $(c)$ $A$ is linear or conjugate-linear and preserves orthogonality in both directions; $(d)$ $A$ is linear or conjugate-linear and preserves orthogonality; $(e)$ $A$ is additive and preserves orthogonality in both directions; $(f)$ $A$ is additive and preserves orthogonality. This extends to the complex setting a recent generalization of the Koldobsky--Blanco--Turnšek theorem obtained by Wójcik for real normed spaces.

Abstract:Let A and B be unital C~*-algebras, s ∈A and t ∈ B be invertible self-adjoint elements. For every x ∈ A and z ∈B, define x~+=s~(-1)x~*s and z~+=t~(-1)z~*t. Assume that A is of real rank zero and φ: A→B is a bounded linear surjection. This paper shows that, x~+y=0 φ(x)~+φ(y)=0 and xy~+=0 φ(x)φ(y)~+=0 for any x, y ∈ A, if and only if φ(1) is invertible, φ(1)~+φ(1)=φ(1)φ(1)~+ ∈(B) (the center of B) and there exists a surjective +-homomorphism ψ(i.e., ψ is a homomorphism and ψ(x~+)=ψ(x)~+, x ∈A) from A onto B such that φ(x)=φ(1)ψ(x) for all x ∈A. For general C~*-algebra cases, a similar result is obtained for orthogonality preservers under an additional assumption that φ(1) is invertible.

Abstract:In this article, Albert Wei's result which described the forms of the linear maps that preserve the set of orthogonal matrices is treated and its new proof is provided. Wei's result is simplified by introducing a new description of the singular linear maps acting into the space n by n real matrices that preserve orthogonal matrices. From this description, one can immediately conclude that the range of such singular maps is isometrically isomorphic with the space Rn . The proof of the Wei's result that is presented here is based on many new facts about linear maps that preserve the orthogonal group of matrices that are of interest independently of issues considered here.

Abstract:We investigate the local preservation of Birkhoff-James orthogonality at a point by a linear operator on a finite-dimensional Banach space and illustrate its importance in understanding the action of the operator in terms of the geometry of the concerned spaces. In particular, it is shown that such a study is related to the preservation of k-smoothness and the extremal properties of the unit ball of a Banach space. As an application of the results obtained in this direction, we obtain a refinement of the well-known Blanco-Koldobsky-Turnsek characterization of isometries on some polyhedral Banach spaces, including $ \ell_{\infty}^n, \ell_1^n. $

Abstract:We study best approximations in Banach spaces via Birkhoff–James orthogonality of functionals. To exhibit the usefulness of Birkhoff–James orthogonality techniques in the study of best approximation problems, some algorithms and distance formulae are presented. As an application of our study, we obtain some crucial inequalities, which also strengthen the classical Hölder's inequality. The relevance of the algorithms and the inequalities are discussed through concrete examples.

We show that Φ preserves indefinite orthogonality, i.e.,$T^{\dag} S = 0 \Rightarrow \Phi (T)^{\dag} \Phi (S) = 0$ and$TS^{\dag} = 0 \Rightarrow \Phi (T)\Phi (S)^{\dag} = 0$ for any$T,S \in \mathcal{B}(H),$ if and only if there exist linear or conjugate linear bounded invertible operators U : H → K and V : K → H, which satisfy that both$U^{{{\dag}}} U$ and$V^{{{\dag}}} V$ are real scalar multiples of the identity, such that$\Phi (T) = UTV$ for all$T \in \mathcal{B}(H),$ where, for$R \in \mathcal{B}(H,K),R^{{\dag}} $ stands for the conjugate of R with respect to the indefinite inner products. A similar result is also true in the finite dimensional case if Φ(I) is assumed to be invertible.

Abstract:We introduce new vanishing subspaces of the homogeneous Hölder space $\dot{C}^{0,\omega}(X,Y),$ in the generality of a doubling modulus $\omega$ and normed spaces $X$ and $Y.$ For many couples $X,Y,$ we show these vanishing subspaces to completely characterize those Hölder functions that admit approximations, in the Hölder seminorm, by smooth, Lipschitz and boundedly supported functions. Beyond the intrinsic interest of these results, we also present connections to bi-parameter harmonic analysis on the Euclidean space and in particular to compactness of the bi-commutator.

Abstract:This paper explores the concept of approximate Birkhoff–James orthogonality in the context of operators on semi-Hilbert spaces. These spaces are generated by positive semi-definite sesquilinear forms. We delve into the fundamental properties of this concept and provide several characterizations of it. Using innovative arguments, we extend a widely known result initially proposed by Magajna [17]. Additionally, we improve a recent result by Sen and Paul [24] regarding a characterization of approximate numerical radius orthogonality of two semi-Hilbert space operators, such that one of them is -positive. Here, is assumed to be a positive semi-definite operator.

Abstract:Ioffe's criterion and various reformulations of it have become a~standard tool in proving theorems guaranteeing various regularity properties such as metric regularity, i.e., the openness with a linear rate around the reference point, of a~(set-valued) mapping. We derive an analogue of it guaranteeing the almost openness with a linear rate of mappings acting in incomplete spaces and having non-closed graphs, in general. The main tool used is an approximate version of Ekeland's variational principle for a function that is not necessarily lower semi-continuous and is defined on an abstract (possibly incomplete) space. Further, we focus on the stability of this property under additive single-valued and set-valued perturbations.

Abstract:We introduce $n$-orthogonality (and completely orthogonality) preserving operators between C$^*$-algebras. Our main theorem states that every completely orthogonality preserving bounded linear mapping between C$^*$-algebras is a weighted TRO homomorphism. We also give several characterisations of TRO homomorphisms among triple homomorphisms.
