Abstract:A new type of crystal-fiber high-temperature sensor was put forward and tested here whose mini-blackbody cavity is fabricated by doping the fiber end. Its radiance performance at high temperature was studied both theoretically and experimentally, and it was found that (1) as long as its doping concentration is proper, its radiance approaches the one of blackbody; (2) its strength and lifetime at high temperature are good (for the Al2O3 crystal fiber with doped fiber end, its working temperature can be of 2000��C; for the ZrO2 crystal fiber, its working temperature can be even higher); (3) its spatial resolution is high, and its time-response is quick.

Abstract:The sensor head of the high-temperature fiber optic sensor plays a very important role in the measurement, it directly determines the frequency response characteristics, distinguishability and other features of the sensor, so the detailed and advanced research is necessary. In this paper, the frequency response characteristics of high-temperature fiber optic sensor head are studied by means of a laser heated system, relationship between sensor head's response time and its geometrical sizes is obtained, which is in accord with theoretical evaluations.

Abstract:In this work, a study of a fibre optic ruby crystal probe exposed to high temperatures has been carried out for the first time, and 'annealing' effects have been considered and reported upon. The work has enabled the device to be studied at temperatures up to 1500 degreesC to test its 'survivability': the results show that a single-crystal probe is able to operate continuously at temperatures up to 1400 degreesC, and can reliably cover a wide temperature measurement range from 0 degreesC to 1400 degreesC. Uncertainties in the measurement of, at worst, approximately +/-7 degreesC result after many hundreds of hours of temperature cycling of the probe.

Abstract:YAG crystal fibers with end Cr3+ doped have been grown by the laser heated pedestal growth method as the temperature sensor probe using fluorescence decay. The crystal fibers show good optical properties and mechanical strength and offer advantages of compact construction, high performance, and ability to withstand high temperature. The fluorescence characteristics of the Cr3+:YAG crystal fiber probe with temperature were investigated from −20to500°C. The experimental results indicate that Cr3+:YAG crystal fiber shows a monotonic relationship between the fluorescence lifetime and temperature over a wide temperature range. This fiber was found to be an excellent material to be used as fluorescence decay optical fiber temperature sensor.

Abstract:Fabrication methods and fluorescence temperature characteristics of Cr3+ ions doped YAG single crystal optical fiber for fluorescence temperature sensor were studied. Fine quality YAG single crystal optical fibers with end Cr3+ ions doped for fluorescence temperature sensor were fabricated using a laser heated pedestal growth method. The fluorescence temperature characteristics of the temperature sensor were studied theoretically and experimentally. The results indicate that the fluorescence lifetime of Cr3+:YAG fiber decreases smoothly and monotonically from 2.9 ms to 0.07 ms as the temperature increases from -20°C to 510°C, and correspondingly, the fluorescence lifetime changes in a rate of 28 μs/°C to 0.4 μs/°C. The fluorescence lifetime to Cr3+ ions doped concentrations was studied and the temperature resolution of the sensor based on fluorescence lifetime measurement was also discussed.

Abstract:ZrO2, CuO, Al2O3 and SiO2 mixed nanopowder was used to coat the head of sapphire single crystal fiber for improving the properties of high-temperature single crystal fiber sensor. The result indicates that the head coated with above mixed nanopowder shows better optical stability, shorter response time and higher thermal shock resistance, in comparison with the head coated with coarse-grained particles with the same chemical compositions.

Abstract:Conventional sapphire fibre-optic sensors show excellent performance in high-temperature applications, but they cannot be used for contact measurement of temperatures above 1900 °C. In order to extend the operating temperature of fibre-optic sensors, a radiation-based zirconia single-crystal fibre-optic sensor has been developed. This novel sensor can be operated up to 2300 °C. A 60 mm long and 0.45 mm thick yttria-stabilized zirconia single-crystal fibre with one end coated with a layer of BeO ceramic is used to generate and transmit radiation signals at high temperature. Another 520 mm long and 0.80 mm thick sapphire fibre is used as a sub-high-temperature waveguide. Experimental results from 1200 °C to 2300 °C demonstrate that the developed sensor is very promising for applications beyond 2000 °C.

Abstract:The sapphire fibre thermometer probe with doped Cr3+ ion tip end was produced by laser heated pedestal method, and a thermometer system based on its fluorescent decay was presented. A phase-locked detection method was used to check the fluorescence lifetime. Among the detection ranging from the room temperature to 450 ℃, the thermometer has an average temperature resolution of 1 ℃. The system had the advantages of high accuracy, very high temperature resolution, good dynamic response and immunity to the electro-magnetic interference. So it may be used in microwave treatment and thermal monitoring of medium voltage substations.

Abstract:The sapphire optic fiber thermometer for high temperature is described. The sapphire optic fiber is suitable for high temperature measurement because of its wonderful high temperature physical and chemical performance, which can be used for radiation optic fiber temperature sensors. A sapphire fiber thermal probe with Cr 3+ ion-doped end is grown by using the laser heated pedestal growth method. A laser is used to heat a small pedestal, so that fluorescence-temperature-responsing materials like a small ruby crystal optic-fiber will grow on the top of the sapphire optic-fiber, which can be made into a compact-structure, high-temperature and stable-function sensor head. Though the fluorescence life measurement, the corresponding temperature can be measured. According to the surface temperature, the inner temperature can be obtained by the temperature field. It can be used in measuring the steel fluid of the tundish in continuous cast steel machines. Experimental system of the thermometer and the preliminary experimental result are presented. The experiment results shows that it can realize non-touched measurement and has high precision.

Abstract:A fiber thermometer using the cross detection of the fluorescence lifetime and blackbody radiation was presented to measure temperature from -10°C up to 1400°C. Using a long pure YAG crystal fiber as the seed and a 0.1 at. % Cr2O3-doped Y3Al5O12 sintered powder rod as the source rod, a YAG fiber thermal probe with Cr3+ -ions doped end was grown by laser heated pedestal growth method. A blackbody cavity was constructed by sintered a thin ceramic layer around the Cr3+: YAG fiber end. A phase-locked detection scheme was used for the fluorescence lifetime detection. The fluorescence characteristics of the Cr3+-ions doped YAG was analyzed in a temperature range from -10°C up to 500°C. From 350°C to 1400°C the blackbody radiation signal in a narrow waveband were detected. Because the fluorescence lifetime was intensity independent, it should have the long-term stability and would not change if the fiber connectors of the probes were realigned. So the fluorescence lifetime based temperature measurement could be used to recalibrate that based on the blackbody radiation detection. Preliminary experimental results showed that the system could achieve a resolution much better than 1°C over the whole temperature range from -10°C to 1400°C.

Abstract:A sapphire fiber thermometer for high temperature measurement is described. The mechanism of the fluorescence temperature measurement is based on the basic physical phenomenon of photoluminescence. The so-called photoluminescence essentially is the superthermal radiation luminescence when some materials are stimulated by ultraviolet, visible or a certain form of the infrared electromagnetic radiation. The fluorescence lifespan and fluorescence strength of all fluorescence materials will imply some temperature correlation within some homologous temperatures. It uses a specially grown sapphire fiber as thermometer probe. The end part of the sapphire fiber is doped with Cr3+ion by means of the laser heat pedestal growth (LHPG) method and coated with some high radiant material to constitute a mini fiber cavity. The fluorescence thermal probe offers the advantages of a compact structure, a high performance and the ability to withstand high temperatures in detection. According to the surface temperature, we can obtain the inner temperature by the temperature field. It can be used to measure the steel fluid of the tundish in continuous cast steel machines. An experimental system of the thermometer and the preliminary experimental results are presented.
Ultra-high Melting Point Ho3+, Yb3+ Co-Doped HfO2 Single-Crystal Fibers for High-Precision and Robust Ratiometric Thermometry Towards Harsh Environments

Abstract:Oxide single-crystal fibers (SCF) have a high melting point, excellent luminescence properties and waveguide structure, gaining widespread attention in the field of temperature sensing, especially for long-term and high-precision temperature sensing requirements in high-temperature and oxygen-containing environments. In this study, high-quality Ho3+, Yb3+ co-doped HfO2, and Ho3+, Yb3+, Y3+ co-doped HfO2 SCF with an ultrahigh melting point over 3000 K have been prepared via laser-heated pedestal growth method for the first time. The crystalline phase-dependent upconversion luminescence and temperature sensing behaviors have been observed and investigated in detail. The sub-stable o-phase HfO2 appears in the HfO2:0.5%Ho/10%Yb SCF, leading to a superior fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) thermometry performance compared with the pure c-phase HfO2 SCF, with a maximum S-a of 0.327 K-1 and maximum S-r of 1.39% K-1 in the range of 273-823 K, respectively. Furthermore, we found that o-phase HfO2:0.5%Ho/10 Yb SCF possesses stronger emission color variability with the relative sensitivities (S(r)x) of the CIE coordinates of 0.81% K-1. This study reveals the vital influence of the crystalline phases on optical thermometry and provides a promising candidate and feasible design concept for high-temperature and high-precision optical thermometers.
Optical Fiber Sensor with Double Tubes for Accurate Strain and Temperature Measurement under High Temperature Up to 1000 °C

Abstract:In this work, we present a discriminative optical fiber sensor for temperature and strain measurement. The sensor comprises of two cascaded thermal regenerated Fiber Bragg gratings (RFBGs) incorporated with two fused silica capillary tubes. The RFBG 2 is loosely enclosed in a fine fused silica tube and made solely sensitivity to temperature whereas the RFBG 1 sensor still retains its sensitivity to both strain and temperature. These properties have made the discriminative measurement accurate and directive. The experimental results indicate that temperature response is linear in the range of 100 – 1000°C with the sensitivity of ~15.7 pm/°C. Besides, it presents good repeatability in strain detection at high temperatures (300 °C – 900 °C). The incorporation of the two fine glass tubes has enhanced the modified RFBG’s strain sensitivity to as high as ~5.46 pm/ $\mu \varepsilon $ in the measurement range of $0~\mu \varepsilon $ to 120 $\mu \varepsilon $ at 600 °C, which is about five times higher than that of common RFBG strain sensors. The sensitivity can be further enhanced by manipulating the parameters of the sensor’s structure.

Abstract:A fiber thermometer using the cross detection of the fluorescence decay and background radiation was presented to measure the temperature from room temperature to over 1600 °C. A YAG crystal fiber with a Tm doped tip was used as the sensing material. A phase-locked detection scheme was used for the fluorescence detection and background radiation compensation. The compensation current was also used for the background radiation detection. The fluorescence characteristics of the Tm doped YAG crystal fiber was analyzed in a temperature range from room temperature to over 1200 °C. The annealing effect on the probe material under high temperature was also investigated. The preliminary result showed that the system could achieve a resolution much better than 1 °C over the whole temperature range from room temperature to 1400 °C.

Abstract:High-temperature measurements above 1000 °C are critical in harsh environments such as aerospace, metallurgy, fossil fuel, and power production. Fiber-optic high-temperature sensors are gradually replacing traditional electronic sensors due to their small size, resistance to electromagnetic interference, remote detection, multiplexing, and distributed measurement advantages. This paper reviews the sensing principle, structural design, and temperature measurement performance of fiber-optic high-temperature sensors, as well as recent significant progress in the transition of sensing solutions from glass to crystal fiber. Finally, future prospects and challenges in developing fiber-optic high-temperature sensors are also discussed.

Abstract:A miniature high-sensitivity, high-temperature fiber sensor with an interferometer based on a bare small-core-diameter dispersion compensation fiber (DCF) is reported. The sensing head is a single-mode-fiber (SMF) DCF configuration formed by a 4 mm long bare DCF with one end connected to the SMF by a fusion splicing technique and the other end cleaved. Due to the large mode index difference and high thermo-optic coefficient induced by two dominative interference modes, a miniature high-temperature fiber sensor with a high sensitivity of 68.6 pm/degrees C is obtained by monitoring the wavelength shift of the interference spectrum. This type of sensor has the features of small size, high sensitivity, high stability, simple structure, and low cost.
Highly Sensitive Temperature Sensor Based on D-Shaped Microfiber with High Birefringence

Abstract:A high sensitive temperature sensor based on D-shaped microfiber with high birefringence is proposed and demonstrated. In order to obtain D-shaped microfiber, we polish a single mode fiber (SMF) and then taper down the polished region into micrometer size. By utilizing Sagnac loop interferometer, we achieve high refractive index (RI) sensitivity of 9951nm/RIU. Further, we realize temperature detection assisted by sucrose solution with high thermo-optic coefficient. Experimental results demonstrate high temperature sensitivity up to -0.98921nm/°C within the range of 22°C-60°C. The sensor is featured with high sensitivity, compact structure and easy fabrication.

Abstract:The temperature-dependent characteristics of fluorescence of transient-metal doped and/or rare-earth-doped YAG has made these materials the focus of fluorescence thermometer. This article reports growth and fluorescence characteristics of Cr3+: YAG crystal fiber used for thermometer based on fluorescence decay time. Using a long pure YAG crystal fiber as the seed and a 0.1 at. % Cr2O3-doped Y3Al5O12 sintered powder rod as the source rod, a YAG fiber thermal probe with Cr3+-ions doped end was grown by laser heated pedestal growth method. The crystal fiber shows good optical properties and mechanical strength and offers advantages of compact construct, high performance and ability to withstand high temperature. The fluorescence decay characteristics of the crystal fiber, including the temperature dependence of both fluorescence decay time and intensity, were comprehensively investigated. The experimental results indicated the Cr3+:YAG crystal fiber showed a monotonic relationship between the fluorescence lifetime and temperature over a wide temperature range from cryogenic to high temperature(>500°C). The fiber was found to be an excellent candidate material to be used as a fiber thermometer based on fluorescence lifetime. This thermometer may be used as temperature monitor in microwave treatment and Medium Voltage substations.

Abstract:Optical temperature sensors, which can accurately detect temperature in biological systems, are crucial to the development of healthcare monitoring. To challenge the state-of-art technology, it is necessary to design single luminescence center doped materials with multi-wavelength emission for optical temperature sensors with more modes and higher resolution. Here, an Er3+ single-doped KYF4 nanocrystals glass ceramic with an obvious thermochromic phenomenon is reported for the first time, which shows a different temperature-dependent green, red, and near-infrared luminescence behavior based on thermal disturbance model. In addition, Er3+ single-doped GC fiber was drawn and fabricated into multi-mode optical fiber temperature sensor, which has superior measured temperature resolution (<0.5 & DEG;C), excellent detection limit (0.077 & DEG;C), and high correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.99997. More importantly, this sensor can monitor temperature in different scenarios with great envi-ronmental interference resistance and repeatability. These results indicate that our sensor shows great promise as a technology for environmental and healthcare monitoring, and it provides a route for the design of optical fiber temperature sensors with multi-mode and high resolution.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a novel optical fiber fluorescent temperature sensor based on photonic crystal fiber(PCF) and its theory of forward stimulated fluorescence emission in PCF. It is realized by liquid filling in hollow-core PCF, the liquid is of higher temperature coefficient of refractive index than that of silicon, and is mixed with fluorescent material. Stimulating light and fluorescence propagating in the fiber are in the same direction. Because the band gaps of PCF are modulated by temperature, besides the sensitivity of fluorescence, the stimulating light passing through the photonic crystal fiber is also sensitive to temperature. Experiment results and theory modulation show that when PCF length is shorter than an optimum length, stimulating light in fiber will increase and fluorescence will decline gradually with the increase of temperature.
