Abstract:Evaluation of the liquefaction susceptibility of soils is one of the most important subjects in geotechnical earthquake engineering. The energy-based liquefaction evaluation procedure, with a focus on seismic energy propagation and dissipation in soils, has attracted increasing attention in recent years. This paper presents a systematic analysis of cyclic triaxial test data of three series of silty sands through the energy-based approach. The stress-normalized accumulative dissipated strain energy per unit volume required for triggering liquefaction is used to evaluate the liquefaction potential of sands. It is a function of void ratio, fines content, and sand type. The pore pressure generation with the stress-normalized accumulative dissipated energy per unit volume can be simulated by a one-parameter pore pressure model, and the model parameter is affected by void ratio, fines content, and sand type. Unified characterizations of the stress-normalized accumulative dissipated energy per unit volume required for liquefaction and the fitting parameter of the pore pressure model are proposed in the framework of critical state soil mechanics.
Probability Analysis of Submarine Landslides Based on the Response Surface Method: A Case Study from the South China Sea

Abstract:As deep-sea engineering develops, it becomes essential to analyze the stability of submarine slopes when considering the stability of submarine foundations or evaluating the safety of offshore structures. However, the traditional method for analyzing slope stability does not give adequate consideration to the uncertainty of soil properties, and so the reliability method has been proposed and used to settle the variation of soil parameters. Regarding the northern slope of the South China Sea, the present paper summarizes its geomorphic features, seismic characteristics, and the soil strength at certain boreholes. A typical slope section is chosen with which to conduct probability analysis using the polynomial-based Response Surface Method (RSM) and the Advanced First Order Second Moment method(AFOSM). A novel form of the RSM based on Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) is also proposed and applied in this case to approximate the limit state function, and its efficiency is confirmed. The simulation results of Latin-hypercube analysis are set as the benchmark for the other methods. The influences of slope gradient and seismic action on the stability of submarine slopes are also investigated.

Abstract:The Yellow River Delta is covered with a large number of pipelines, but due to the complex soil composition in the region, ensuring that pipelines are not damaged by soil liquefaction is an important issue at present. Based on the simplified method of the cone penetration test (CPT), the sequential Gaussian simulation (SGS) can probabilistically simulate the liquefaction potential index (LPI) in the study area to solve the problem of the smoothing effect occurring in the kriging method. In this study, 10 experiments were conducted in the Yellow River Delta to evaluate soil liquefaction within the site using uncertainty analysis by the SGS method. The results indicate that (1) All LPI values in the study area are less than 5, with an overall sub-moderate liquefaction potential. (2) The results of the variogram model show that the Gaussian function model has the best fit with a Root Mean Squared Error of 0.429. The results of the e-type simulation realizations illustrate that the soils around the three sites S1, S5, and S10 exhibit high LPI values, distributed in a band in the middle of the western and eastern parts of the site. (3) Uncertainty analysis was performed using LPI = 2 as a threshold to explore the distribution of areas of moderate liquefaction potential and areas of low liquefaction potential in the study area. (4) Improvements were made to address the current problem of inappropriate values of liquefaction thresholds and the lack of medium liquefaction potential thresholds by proposing when LPI = 20 as the liquefaction threshold, LPI = 10 and 16 as the thresholds for low liquefaction potential, medium liquefaction potential and high liquefaction potential.

Abstract:Earthquake Spectra, Ahead of Print. This paper presents a model for distributing zones of liquefaction and nonliquefaction for use in regional liquefaction risk analysis. There are two broad methodologies that have been used to evaluate liquefaction risk on the regional scale: (a) application of site-specific procedures using soil properties inferred from geology, or (b) application of geospatial proxies for liquefaction. The first approach will tend to predict similar liquefaction probabilities across broad areas with similar geology, water table depths, and shaking intensities. The second approach yields the probability of liquefaction, which can be interpreted as the portion of the area affected by liquefaction ([math]). Neither approach, however, gives an informed prediction of the spatial distribution of liquefaction and the resulting displacements, which are particularly important for assessments of seismic risk for spatially distributed infrastructure systems. We propose a methodology for incorporating spatial correlation into a geospatial proxy for liquefaction to create maps of liquefaction and nonliquefaction for a given earthquake scenario. First, we describe a latent Gaussian process that is assumed to govern the spatial distribution of liquefaction. Next, a database of empirical observations of liquefaction is used to obtain the coefficients that describe that latent Gaussian process. The proposed model yields random realizations of maps of liquefaction and nonliquefaction conditioned on a map of [math]. Such maps can be used to constrain the area over which displacements are estimated using soil properties inferred from geology and are therefore a critical component in reducing bias in assessments of liquefaction risk at the regional scale.

Abstract:Landslide is regarded as one of the most prevalent and destroying geological hazards in natural terrain areas. Reliable landslide susceptibility analysis procedures are vital for policymakers to manage the regional-scale landslide risk. In the framework of physically based modelling analysis, the infinite slope model is commonly used to assess the surficial landslide susceptibility with deterministically defined geotechnical and geological parameters. This work aims to develop a user-friendly geographic information system (GIS) extension tool called the GIS-FORM landslide prediction toolbox using the Python programming language to consider the possible uncertainties in the physically based landslide susceptibility analysis in seismic areas. We implement the first-order reliability method (FORM) algorithm to calculate the probability of infinite slope failures. The proposed toolbox can produce some regional hazard distribution maps of different indexes, such as the factor of safety (FoS), reliability index (RI), and failure probability (P f ). Furthermore, the toolbox enables coseismic landslide displacement prediction using either the direct Newmark integration method and/or the empirical formula method. Outputs of the GIS-FORM landslide prediction analysis are verified using published data in the literature. Further, it is also successfully employed for landslide susceptibility analysis of the Ms 7.0 Jiuzhaigou earthquake in Sichuan Province, China. Without loss of generality, the GIS-FORM landslide prediction toolbox can serve for the rapid hazard mapping of earthquake-induced regional landslides where uncertainties in geological and geotechnical parameters should be considered.

Abstract:AbstractIn this paper, a simplified assessment method for the wave-induced liquefied depth in a shallow seabed is proposed. By introducing a weighting factor, both the oscillatory and residual pore pressures were considered in the liquefaction criteria. Normalized charts were presented for a quick and simple evaluation of the maximum liquefied depth as a function of wave and soil parameters. Finally, parametric analyses were performed to clarify the applicable range of this criterion. It is found that the increases of relative density and consolidation coefficient will obviously enhance the influence of the oscillatory pore pressure on the liquefaction of a shallow seabed, as well as reduce the liquefaction potential.

Abstract:As a very complex and uncertain problem, seismic liquefaction is affected by many factors, such as earthquake intensity, site conditions, soil properties, etc. During the past half a century, the state-of-the-art in analysis and evaluation of earthquake-induced soil liquefaction and its consequences as well as the state-of-the-practice in improving seismic stability to resist liquefaction have been made much progress. However, the fragility analysis and assessment for seismic liquefaction of sites have not been paid enough attention to. In this paper, the concept of seismic liquefaction fragility for building sites is proposed. The soil resistance to liquefaction and liquefaction possibility are expressed as a fragility function of ground motion intensity, which can be used to describe minor, moderate and severe liquefaction potential under different ground motion intensity. Combined with the existing research results of seismic liquefaction evaluation, the analysis method of liquefaction fragility is given. Taking a specific site as an example for liquefaction fragility analysis, it is found that taking the calculated exceedance probability of different liquefaction levels as the observation value, the liquefaction fragility function follows both lognormal distribution and log-logistic distribution. With the increase of liquefaction level, the median value of liquefaction fragility function increases, while the site liquefaction fragility curve moves to the right, which shows that the ability of the site to resist more severe liquefaction is increasing. When convolved with the analysis results of liquefaction triggering and hazard, the liquefaction fragility function can be a much efficient tool for seismic liquefaction risk analysis of specific sites.

Abstract:Combining the spatial analysis function of GIS with the limit equilibrium method,a visualization system(GiSlope) for soil slope stability analysis is developed.The visualizing establishment process of the analysis model is introduced.The setting of the analysis,slices division methods of random shape of slip surface and the method of confirming parameters are explained.Finally,several typical examples are put forward for comparing GiSlope with commercial software.The results prove that GiSlope is accurate and credible.

Abstract:Based on the theories of coupled interaction in saturated soil and dynamic soil-structure interaction, the response of subway structure in fully saturated liquefiable soil under earthquake excitation is investigated using the effective-stress based finite element program Dyna-Swandyne-II. A generalized plasticity model, Pastor-Zienkiewicz III model, is used to model the cyclic behavior of soil; and finite element procedure based on the u-p form of Biot theory is employed to conduct the coupled analysis. The nonlinearity of the interaction between soil and subway structure is fully considered. The dynamic response of subway structure, including the internal forces, the acceleration, and the vertical and horizontal displacements, are analyzed. The results showed that the subway structure may uplift due to the earthquake induced liquefaction, which shall lead to severe damage in the structure; and that the maximum seismic internal forces occurred at the connections of the structure elements and their reinforcement must be carefully designed. Evaluation of SPT-Based Liquefaction Assessment Methods in China

Abstract:Various SPT-based empirical methods for liquefaction assessment have been developed over the past decades. However, the effectiveness of these methods for liquefaction assessment in China needs further investigation. This paper evaluates the efficacy of currently commonly used SPT-based methods for liquefaction assessment in China based on existing earthquake liquefaction data. Through calculating and analyzing the prediction success rate (PSR) of in-site liquefied and non-liquefied sites, the applicability of several major SPT-based methods for liquefaction assessment in China is discussed. The analysis results show that the JRA method is in general over-conservative for application in China and is more applicable to liquefaction sites with large sand depth and deep groundwater table; meanwhile the NCEER, I-B and T-Y methods tend to underestimate liquefaction potential in China, and are relatively effective for sites with great acceleration or large magnitude; furthermore, the CSDB methods have a relatively high success rate of liquefaction judgement based on data from historic earthquake data before the 1990's, but a lower success rate for the two most recent earthquakes, especially in the 2003 Bachu earthquake. Based on these findings, further expansion of China's existing liquefied database for liquefaction assessment is suggested to improve the CSDB methods, and the JRA, NCEER, I-B and T-Y methods also require further improvement based on China's liquefaction data when applied to China.

Abstract:Main framework and topics of seismic liquefaction study are summarized,including the current state of the art and trends,with respect to mechanism of liquefaction,susceptibility of liquefaction,liquefaction flowslides,liquefaction-induced deformation and numerical modeling techniques.It is shown that the key issues of seismic liquefaction in practice are related not with strength but with deformation.The liquefaction-induced deformation evaluation techniques can be diveded into two categories:(1)empirical methods based on statis- tical analysis of historical seismic liquefaction deformation database and(2)numerical modeling.Numerical modeling is shown to be an effective tool and have widespread prospect for analysis of complex boundary value problems of seismic liquefaction.In future seismic liquefaction research,it is important to improve the existing methods of liquefaction susceptibility analysis and liquefaction-induced deformation evaluation by establishing and analyzing the seismic hazard database.But more emphases should be placed on revealing the mechanism of seismic liquefaction,developing constitutive models that can describe the stress-strain behavior of sand over a small to large strain range during an entire pre-and post-liquefaction process,and developing corresponding numerical algorithms to implement the models in the simulation of practical boundary-value problems.
Probabilistic Analysis of Wave-Induced Seabed Response Based on Stochastic Finite Element Method

Abstract:Wave-induced seabed response is a research hotspot in the field of geotechnical engineering. The wave-induced seabed liquefaction is the main reason for the instability of seabed and marine structures. In view of many uncertainties involved in the analysis of the seabed response, such as the spatial variability of sediment properties and the randomness of related loads, a probabilistic framework based on the stochastic fmite element method is developed, which couples the simulation of spatially heterogeneous soil in MATLAB and the finite element analysis of poroelasticity in COMSOL through the LiveLink program. A decomposed K-L expansion method is proposed, which takes less computational time and memory space, making the generation of three-dimensional random fields with high resolution and large scale more effective. Based on the proposed probabilistic framework, the dynamic response of both the two-dimensional sloping seabed under regular waves and the three-dimensional seabed under random waves are studied. The influence of the spatial variability of the permeability coefficient K and shear modulus G of marine sediments and the randomness of wave loads on the distribution of pore water pressure and the liquefaction depth in the seabed are revealed. The study has shown that traditional deterministic analysis methods lead to unsafe engineering designs.
Improving Soil Liquefaction Prediction Through an Extensive Database and Innovative Ground Motion Characterization: A Case Study of Port Island Liquefied Site

Abstract:Liquefaction is a phenomenon in which soils lose their strength and stiffness significantly during earthquake shakings. It is very important to accurately predict the liquefaction triggering and permanent displacement of liquefied sites under different seismic conditions. This study systematically investigates the effect of ground motion characteristics on the evolution of important physical quantities during the liquefaction process, while the relative capacity of various ground motion intensity measures (IMs) in predicting the pore-pressure generation and the permanent deformation in liquefiable soils are studied. An extensive database containing 501 three-component ground motion records is established to improve soil liquefaction prediction under different earthquake scenarios. A significant number of fully nonlinear dynamic analyses are performed for the Port Island liquefied site, where advanced constitutive models are used to realistically characterize the nonlinear soil behaviors. Results from numerical simulations demonstrate that the energy-related IMs such as CAV5 have a superior predictive capacity than the peak ground acceleration in predicting the liquefaction initiation and permanent displacement, but the predictions based on scalar IMs are not sufficient because residuals are strongly depended on earthquake magnitude and rupture distance. On the other hand, vector IMs that incorporate both energy and peak value characteristics of ground motions can improve the predictive capabilities regarding pore pressure generation and permanent deformation in liquefiable soils. The study helps lay down the basis towards an improved procedure for liquefaction hazard evaluation and mitigation.

Abstract:The evaluation on oil-gas reservoir is an important basic work in the process of prospecting and exploitation of oilfield. The veracity of the appraising result lies on reliability of well-log, rationality of math model and the synthesizing abilities of geological information. GIS-based grey comprehensive evaluation on oil-gas reservoir is achieved by managing and analyzing of GIS. By means of integrating grey comprehensive evaluation method with GIS, Oil-gas reservoir is identified. At last, combined geological data, character of oil-water distribution is analyzed. Thus a great deal of existing geological data and geophysical data are managed and used by GIS. Spatial analysis function of GIS is extended. At the same time, visualization of evaluation resolution is realized.

Abstract:Earthquake-induced liquefaction is a relevant natural hazard due to the damages caused in numerous buildings, facilities and infrastructures worldwide. The damages caused to the infrastructure by this phenomenon are caused by the loss of stiffness and strength in granular soils, which leads to settlements and lateral spreading. Earthquake-induced liquefaction typically occurs in saturated deposits composed of non-plastic soils. Hence, the degree of saturation reduction is considered one of the most favourable and optimistic methods for liquefaction resistance mitigation. This paper explores the earthquake-induced liquefaction in saturated and gassy sands, varying their degree of saturation and state parameters. The state parameter was used to analyse the mechanical behaviour by combining the effects of relative density (or initial void ratio) with confinement pressure. Results show that liquefaction resistance improvement caused by the reduction in the degree of saturation is higher as the state parameter increases. This improvement can be described and quantified by multivariate models integrating the effects of degree of saturation and state parameter on liquefaction resistance. This provides a potential solution for improving the resilience of infrastructures susceptible to earthquake-induced liquefaction.

Abstract:Gassy sediments are an important cause of engineering disasters such as large-area coastal submarine landslides, excessive tilting of marine foundations, and excessive deformation of tunnels. Under different stress paths, the gassy soil exhibits different microstructure changes and mechanical responses. This paper introduces the current research status regarding the mechanical responses, numerical simulation and the in-situ test methods of gassy sediment. In terms of mechanical responses, it summarized the strength and deformation characteristics of gassy soil under different stress paths, tracking the study on constitutive model. The disaster simulation work using constitutive model of gassy sediment is introduced. It also analyzes the advantages and limitations of various methods in the in-situ test. It can provide theoretical support for further study on disaster prevention and geological risk assessment of gassy sediments.

Abstract:Soil liquefaction-induced damages in buildings and foundation during earthquakes increase the seismic hazard of densely populated urban cities dwelling on young alluvial soil deposits with a rising demand for infrastructural developments. Generally, liquefaction potential is evaluated for specific sites, which lacks the information related to the spatial extent of liquefaction effects. In the present study, liquefaction hazard maps of Kolkata metropolitan city is prepared for potential future earthquakes considering the spatial variability of soil parameters. The importance and application of geostatistical interpolation tools for hazard mapping are highlighted in this paper. Deterministic procedures of Boulanger and Idriss (2004, 2014) were utilized to quantify the liquefaction potential of two types of soil deposits, silty clay and silty sand, in the study area. Probability of liquefaction ( P L ) was evaluated by first-order second moment (FOSM) reliability method for 2% and 10% probability of exceedance in 50 years. Python codes were developed for the calculation of factor of safety (FS) and P L values for silty sand and silty clay. Spatial distribution maps in terms of FS and P L were generated at 7 m, 15 m and 25 m depth of the study area using ordinary kriging technique in ArcGIS software. The regions of Maidan, Newtown, Rajarhat, Santoshpur, Sector V and Tangra were found to be vulnerable to liquefaction till 15 m depth. Abstract:Traditional pile-based structure design methods imply that by neglecting the effect of soil-structure interaction in dynamic analysis; the obtained results tend to be conservative; but seismic response spectra analysis and pile structure failures during recent catastrophic earthquakes have indicated that liquefaction and soil-pile-structure interaction could in fact lead to an increase in the inertial response of structures on pile foundation. Through analysis of the influence of ground liquefaction on structure-pile inertial interaction using dynamic centrifuge model experiments, a simplified analysis method for the computation of pile based structure inertial response in ground with a liquefied top layer was proposed and used to analyze model experiments described in this paper and by Wilson et al.; computation results show good agreement with experiment results, which demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:Soft computing techniques in geotechnical engineering offer robust predictive capabilities. This study develops soft computing (SC) techniques to assess reliability‐based liquefaction probability of failure (PL) using a state parameter‐based model. GPR leads in predictive performance, closely followed by RVM and MPMR. This research encourages the adoption of state parameter‐based SC models for liquefaction analysis. The state parameter (ѱ) accounts for both relative density and effective stress, which influence the cyclic stress or liquefaction characteristic of the soil significantly. This study presents a ѱ‐based probabilistic liquefaction evaluation method using six soft computing (SC) techniques. The liquefaction probability of failure (PL) is calculated using the first‐order second moment (FOSM) method based on the cone penetration test (CPT) database. Then, six SC techniques, such as Gaussian process regression (GPR), relevance vector machine (RVM), functional network (FN), genetic programming (GP), minimax probability machine regression (MPMR) and multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS), are used to predict PL. The performance of these models is examined using nine statistical indices. Additionally, plots such as regression plots, Taylor diagrams, error matrix and rank analysis are shown to assess the SC model's performance. Finally, sensitivity analysis is performed using the cosine amplitude method (CAM) to assess the influence of input parameters on output. The current study demonstrates that SC models based on state parameter predict PL effectively. RVM and MPMR models closely follow the GPR model in terms of performance, which is superior to the other models. Notably, two equations are generated using GP and MARS models to predict PL. The results of the sensitivity analysis reveal the magnitude of earthquake (Mw) as the most sensitive parameter. The outcomes of this research will offer risk evaluations for geotechnical engineering designs and expand the use of state parameter‐based SC models in liquefaction analysis.
