Abstract:The circular arcs and high-order Laue zone (HOLZ) fine lines observed in both Kikuchi-line and convergent-beam electron diffraction (CBED) patterns have been shown to be consistent with the concept of Bloch-wave channeling of fast electrons along rows of atoms. This interpretation has the advantages that it provides a direct correlation between HOLZ lines and the crystal periodicity along the incident-beam direction, and forms a basis which could be incorporated into a more rigorous electron diffraction theory in the future for understanding the extreme Laue and Bragg cases of electron diffraction, as well as the intermediate reflection and transmission high-energy electron diffraction (RTHEED). Examples are given of all three types of CBED, RHEED and RTHEED patterns from Pt and GaAs single crystals, which show the common dynamical diffraction effects, circular arcs and HOLZ fine lines, resulting from Bloch-wave channeling.

Abstract:The size of the dark focal spot directly determines the resolution and stability of stimulated emission depletion (STED) microscopy. This paper investigates the relationship between the size of the dark focal spot and the polarization of the input light beam. The types of fundamental polarization are discussed, their effects on the dark focal spot are compared and the optimized mode for each kind of polarization is proposed. The results of the analysis provide the theoretical basis and reference for designing a STED system.

Abstract:An electron beam traversing a structured plasmonic field is shown to undergo diffraction with characteristic angular patterns of both elastic and inelastic outgoing electron components. In particular, a plasmonic {\it grating} (e.g., a standing wave formed by two counter-propagating plasmons in a thin film) produces diffraction orders of the same parity as the net number of exchanged plasmons. Large diffracted beam fractions are predicted to occur for realistic plasmon intensities in attainable geometries due to a combination of phase and amplitude changes locally imprinted on the passing electron wave. Our study opens new vistas in the study of multiphoton exchanges between electron beams and evanescent optical fields with unexplored effects related to the transversal component of the electron wave function.

Abstract:We report a study of scattering dynamics in crystals employing momentum-resolved scanning transmission electron microscopy under varying illumination conditions. As we perform successive changes of the probe focus, multiple real-space signals are obtained in dependence of the shape of the incident electron wave. With support from extensive simulations, each signal is shown to be characterised by an optimum focus for which the contrast is maximum and which differs among different signals. For instance, a systematic focus mismatch is found between images formed by high-angle scattering, being sensitive to thickness and chemical composition, and the first moment in diffraction space, being sensitive to electric fields. It follows that a single recording at one specific probe focus is usually insufficient to characterise materials comprehensively. Most importantly, we demonstrate in experiment and simulation that the second moment μ20+μ02=〈p2〉 of the diffracted intensity exhibits a contrast maximum when the electron probe is focused at the top and bottom faces of the specimen, making the presented concept attractive for measuring local topography. Given the versatility of 〈p2〉, we furthermore present a detailed study of its large-angle convergence both analytically using the Mott scattering approach, and by dynamical simulations using the multislice algorithm including thermal diffuse scattering. Both approaches are in very good agreement and yield logarithmic divergence with increasing scattering angle.
Spin Hall Effect and Zitterbewegung in an Electron Waveguide

Abstract:We study spin-resolved probability distributions for electrons in a multichannel waveguide in the presence of a spin-orbit interaction. For a spin-polarized electron injection, a zitterbewegung pattern is predicted in the probability distribution of electrons in the waveguide. For a spin-unpolarized injection, the spin-resolved electron probability in the waveguide shows spin accumulations. In addition to the spin Hall phenomenon, namely accumulations of opposite spins at the lateral edges of the waveguide, we predict the existence of a regular stripe pattern of spin accumulations in the internal region of the waveguide. We show that the predicted zitterbewegung and spin Hall effect stem from the same mechanism and are formed from coherent states of electrons in the waveguide.
Measurement of atomic modulation direction using the azimuthal variation of first order Laue zone electron diffraction

Abstract:We show that diffraction intensity into the First Order Laue Zone (FOLZ) of a crystal can have a strong azimuthal dependence, where this FOLZ ring appears solely because of unidirectional atom position modulation. Such a modulation was already known to cause the appearance of elliptical columns in atom resolution images, but we show that measurement of the angle via 4-dimensional Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (4DSTEM) is far more reliable and allows the measurement of the modulation direction with a precision of about 1° and an accuracy of about 3°. This method could be very powerful in characterising atomic structures in 3 dimensions by 4DSTEM, especially in cases where the structure deviates from that found in bulk crystals.

Abstract:Exploring photonic topology Scattering topological effects are being explored in a variety of electronic and optical materials systems owing to their robustness against defects (see the Perspective by Özdemir). Yang et al. designed and fabricated an ideal optical analog of a three-dimensional Weyl system. Angular transmission measurements revealed four Weyl points at the same energy, as well as the signature helicoidal arcs associated with such an exotic topological system. Zhou et al. theoretically proposed and experimentally demonstrated the formation of a topologically protected bulk Fermi arc. They attributed the formation of the arc to the topological nature of paired exceptional points (points at which gain and loss in the system are matched). Photonic crystals may provide a powerful platform for studying exotic properties of topological electronic systems and may also be used to develop optical devices that exploit topological properties of light-matter interactions. Abstract:The surface resonance condition produces intensity anomalies in the Bragg reflections of RHEED patterns and also continuous parabolae and circles in the Kikuchi line patterns. An apparent doubling of the parabolae and circles results from the separation of the continuous curves from the envelopes of the straight Kikuchi lines. This separation is consistent with the idea that electrons channeled along lines or planes of atoms see an average potential different from that of the bulk crystal. Examples are given of diffraction from Pt, GaAs and InP surfaces.
Strong field induced electron density tide in high harmonic generation from solids

Abstract:In strong laser fields, the electron density in solids can show up tidal motions caused by the laser ``pulling'' on the electrons, which forms an electron density tide (EDT). However, the strong field processes in solids are always explained by the single-active-electron (SAE) model and the fluctuation of background electrons is neglected previously. Here, we demonstrate the strong field induced EDT effect and propose a model for revealing its role in high harmoinc generation (HHG) from solids. We show that the EDT effect induces an additional polarization current beyond the SAE approximation. It gives a new mechanism for HHG and leads to new anisotropic structures, which are experimentally observed with MgO. Our experiment indicates that the EDT effect becomes more obvious with increasing the laser intensity. Our work establishes the bridge between the HHG and the microscopic EDT in solids induced by the strong laser field, which paves the way to probe the ultrafast electron dynamics.

Abstract:We investigate the extraordinary behavior of periodic photonic structures within radiation continuum from the perspective of interfering resonance. The coupled-channel equations of both TE-like and TM-like polarizations are reformulated into the similar forms of the quantum-defect theory that describes the interference of resonances belonging to different Coulombic quantum channels. The concepts of closed-channel, open-channel, coupling potential, and eigenvalues are well interpreted. Some iteration techniques, i.e., field-iteration and k-iteration, are proposed to obtain self-consistent solution of the coupled-channel equations. The iterations are important to guarantee quantitative accuracy for high-index-contrast structure, in which the strength of wave interactions is significantly enhanced compared with its low-index-contrast counterpart. The semianalytical results of resonance wavelength, transmissivity/reflectivity spectrum, and band structure agree well with the rigorous coupled-wave analysis (RCWA) and finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation, confirming the accuracy of the iterations. The interfering resonance provides a clear and consistent picture to understand the periodic photonic structure within radiation continuum, and also reveals the intrinsic similarities between the photonic and quantum systems.

Abstract:A technique of pulsed low-energy electron holography is introduced that allows for recording highly resolved holograms within reduced exposure times. Therefore, stacks of holograms are accumulated in a pulsed mode with individual acquisition times as short as 50 {\mu}s. Subsequently, these holograms are aligned and finally superimposed. The resulting holographic record reveals previously latent high-order interference fringes and thereby pushing interference resolution into the sub-nanometer regime. In view of the non-damaging character of low-energy electrons, the method is of particular interest for structural analysis of fragile biomolecules.

Abstract:Symmetries in the intensity distributions of convergent‐beam electron diffraction (CBED) patterns are governed not only by the atomic structure of the unit cell but by the morphology of the diffracting specimen as a whole. A simple interpretation based on structural tilt projections and the multislice scattering theory may prove useful in extracting morphological information embedded in the presence or absence of CBED pattern symmetries for a wide range of applications, from 4D scanning transmission electron microscopy to bonding electron density studies in nano‐structured materials.This work presents observations of symmetry breakages in the intensity distributions of near‐zone‐axis convergent‐beam electron diffraction (CBED) patterns that can only be explained by the symmetry of the specimen and not the symmetry of the unit cell describing the atomic structure of the material. The specimen is an aluminium–copper–tin alloy containing voids many tens of nanometres in size within continuous single crystals of the aluminium host matrix. Several CBED patterns where the incident beam enters and exits parallel void facets without the incident beam being perpendicular to these facets are examined. The symmetries in their intensity distributions are explained by the specimen morphology alone using a geometric argument based on the multislice theory. This work shows that it is possible to deduce nanoscale morphological information about the specimen in the direction of the electron beam – the elusive third dimension in transmission electron microscopy – from the inspection of CBED patterns.

Theory of Bulk Resonance Diffraction in Theed

Abstract:A full dynamical theory has been developed for an off-axis diffraction geometry. A new type of resonance elastic scattering is found and discussed. This occurs when the Ewald sphere is almost tangential to one of the minus high order Laue zones. and is termed bulk resonance diffraction. It is shown that under certain diffraction conditions, i.e. bulk resonance diffraction conditions, effectively only a single distinct tightly bound Bloch wave localized around atom strings is excited within the crystal. and selection can be made of the particular bound Bloch waves by appropriately tilting the incident beam or the crystal. A new scheme for imaging individual tightly bound Bloch waves is proposed. Full dynamical calculations have been made for 1T-V Se2 single crystals. It is demonstrated that chemical lattice images of V and Se atom strings can be obtained along the [0001] zone axis of a 1T-V Se2 crystal for angles of incidence of 109.54 and 109.90 mrad respectively.
Multiple scattering simulation of electron channelling contrast images of dislocations at interfaces

Abstract:Quantum-mechanical multiple scattering theory of electron backscattering from crystalline materials is applied to simulate channelling images of dislocations situated near the surface of a crystal. A computational algorithm is developed which uses perturbation expansion of the solution of an inhomogeneous transport equation and which makes it possible to generate two-dimensional images of dislocations for various orientations of the Burgers vector. We compare the images simulated numerically with the results of experimental observations performed at inclined incidence using a conventional SEM and recently developed detector of backscattered electrons. The origin of the oscillations of the image intensity is discussed.
Observation of period-doubling Bloch oscillations

Abstract:Bloch oscillations refer to the periodic oscillation of a wavepacket in a lattice under a constant force. Typically, the oscillation has a fundamental period that corresponds to the wavepacket traversing the first Brillouin zone once. Here we demonstrate, both theoretically and experimentally, the optical Bloch oscillations where the wavepacket must traverse the first Brillouin zone twice to complete a full cycle, resulting in a period of oscillation that is two times longer than that of usual Bloch oscillations. The unusual Bloch oscillations arise due to the band crossing of valley-Hall topological edge states at the Brillouin boundary for zigzag domain walls between two staggered honeycomb lattices with inverted on-site energy detuning, which are protected by the glide-reflection symmetry of the underlying structures. Our work sheds light on the direct detection of band crossings resulting from intrinsic symmetries that extend beyond the fundamental translational symmetry in topological systems.

Abstract:Microdiffraction is capable of revealing the local structure within an area of the specimen consisting of only a few, or a few tens of, unit cells. However, the extent to which the diffraction pattern intensities can show the local structure depends strongly on the coherence of the illumination. If the coherence width of the illumination is smaller than the diameter of the electron probe at the specimen level, the details within the diffraction spots, which indicate deviations of the local structure from the periodicity of the crystal, will be lost. The differences in the amount of spot splitting observed in microdiffraction patterns from out-of-phase domain boundaries, observed with two instruments, are attributed to differences in the effective source sizes.
Perspective on Atomic-Resolution Vibrational Electron Energy-Loss Spectroscopy

Abstract:Instrumentation developments in electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) in the scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) one decade ago paved the way for combining milli-electronvolt energy resolution in spectroscopy with Ångström-sized electron probes, unlocking unexplored realms for solid state physics at the nanometer-scale. The fundamental understanding of the scattering processes involved has made it possible to separate atomically localized signals, providing insights into vibrations at the atomic scale. In this Letter, we outline the experimental, conceptual and theoretical advances in this field and also make comparisons with tip-based optical techniques before discussing future perspectives of this exciting technique. Optimization of dark-field signal collection will play a fundamental role in making this technique more widely applicable to a range of materials problems. The benefits of adding momentum-resolution will also be discussed and a powerful acquisition scheme proposed.

Abstract:We combine the theory of inside-source/inside-detector x-ray fluorescence holography and Kossel lines/x ray standing waves in kinematic approximation to directly obtain the phases of the diffraction structure factors. The influence of Kossel lines and standing waves on holography is also discussed. We obtain partial phase determination from experimental data obtaining the sign of the real part of the structure factor for several reciprocal lattice vectors of a vanadium crystal.

Abstract:Intensities in high-resolution phase-contrast images from electron microscopes build up discretely in time by detecting single electrons. A wave description of pulse-like coherent-inelastic interaction of an electron with matter is detailed and verified. In perspective, the interaction time of any matter wave compares with the lifetime of a virtual particle of any elemental interaction, suggesting the present concept of coherent-inelastic interactions of matter waves might be generalizable.
