Abstract:Tensile properties and fracture mechanism of friction stir weld on AZ31 magnesium alloy were studied in this paper. The results of tensile tests showed that the maximum strength of the joint is 258.8 MPa (nearly equal to base metal) with welding speed 150 mm/min and rotation speed 800 r/min. The fracture locations were on the thermal mechanical affected zone (TMAZ) and the strength of the weld nugget was higher than TMAZ and during tensile procedure, the necking occurred on both the TMAZ but not on the weld faying surface. The optical microscopy showed that the fracture independent on the microstructure evolution but depend on the properties of the base metal. All the joints were in typical ductile rupture and the fracture began at bottom then extended to the weld surface along 45 plane. The scanning electronic microscopy confirms that micro fractography is dimple pattern. There is little microhardness losing during FSW and the hardness in the weld nugget was slightly lower than that in TMAZ. The microhardness transition between TMAZ and the weld nugget is the direct factor for tensile failure. Relatively too high rotation speed can damage the joint properties.
