Abstract:Earthquake and seismic-resistant concrete structures are essential components and requirements of structural design. The performance and response of concrete structures during/after the earthquake event are significant to determine the condition of the structures as well as to identify the possibility of structural failure. The main objective is to investigate the appropriate method to evaluate the impact on the structure due to earthquakes based on closed-form solutions, and to determine its differences with the results of numerical modelling. The seismic behavior of structures is required to be designed in accordance with the minimum design requirements specified in the Standard. Seismic design, where ground behavior is considered, is presented as a significant part of design analyses, and ground movement and shaking, are associated with the ground deformation which is the primary seismic load consideration for the design of plain or reinforced concrete structures. The outcome of the longitudinal analysis provided the maximum axial and bending strain which is adopted to calculate the combined strain. These results of strain are considered with the design of concrete structures against Ultimate Limit State and Service Limit State design phases. Therefore, the results evaluate the effect of seismic design on the performance of the concrete structure.

Abstract:The dynamic behavior of concrete is strain-rate-dependent, which affects the failure modes of structures. In this study, a multiscale modeling approach is developed for concrete structures under dynamic loading, which couples the macroscale finite element method (FEM) and the mesoscale discrete element method (DEM). The dynamic response of structures is analyzed using the macroscale FEM, and a representative volume element (RVE), composed of aggregate, mortar, and interface, is simulated using the mesoscale DEM to capture the strain rate effects of concrete. By fully taking the advantages of macroscale and mesoscale simulations, it is no longer essential to use complex constitutive laws or input rate-dependent parameters for the macroscale FEM modeling because the concrete fracture can be explicitly illustrated through the breaking process of the mesoscale RVE. This approach is applied to concrete beams and the Koyna dam to verify its applicability. These practical comparisons demonstrate that the seismic tensile strength increases with the strain rates under seismic loading and that the actual repeated crack-closure process of concrete is adequately simulated by the proposed method.

Abstract:Abstract Taking a multi-storey reinforced concrete frame structure office building as an example, the model analysis, response spectrum analysis and time history analysis of the whole structure are carried out by using the finite element software SAP2000, and the output results of y-pillar in different scenarios are analyzed. The results show that the overall seismic performance of the frame meets the design specifications, and the y-pillar structure meets the elastic and non yield characteristics of the large earthquake.

Abstract:Analytical study on the seismic behaviour of bolt-endplate connected concrete filled tube column (CFT) and steel beam composite frames with buckling restrained braces (BRBs) is being conducted. The objective of this study is to investigate the seismic performance of this type of frame and to evaluate existing design criteria. According to China-related design standards and displacement-based design procedures, a 10-story prototype building was designed with buckling restrained braced frames (BRBFs) as the lateral load resisting system. The columns in this frame are CFT members and the beams are structural steel sections. A planar BRBF was extracted from the prototype building for analysis. The analysis software SAP2000 was used to model the prototype frame including material and geometric nonlinearities and nonlinear time history analyses were conducted using an ensemble of ground motions. The earthquake records were scaled to three different seismic input levels: frequent occurrence earthquake (FOE), design basis earthquake (DBE), and maximum considered earthquake (MCE). Acceptable BRBF behaviour was observed at different seismic input levels. A large-scale BRBF experimental investigation with substructure pseudo dynamic test technique is planned. This paper presents the results of the analytical study and briefly summarizes the upcoming experimental program.

Abstract:This study investigates the seismic response of reinforced concrete buildings designed according to the current Italian building code. Number of stories, site hazard, presence and distribution of masonry infill panels, and type of lateral resisting system are the key investigated parameters. The main issues related to design and modeling are discussed. Two Limit States are considered, namely Global Collapse and Usability-Preventing Damage. The main aim of the study is a comparison between the seismic response of the buildings, investigated through nonlinear static and dynamic analyses. Irregularity in the distribution of infill panels and site hazard emerge as the most influential parameters.

Abstract:This study investigates the seismic response of reinforced concrete buildings designed according to Italian regulations and construction practices for three different post-WWII periods, up to the 1990s. Additional key investigated parameters are the number of stories and the site hazard. The main issues related to non-seismic and early seismic design practices are discussed. The study compares the seismic response of the buildings, investigated through nonlinear static and dynamic analyses, with reference to two performance levels, confirming and quantifying the increase in performance with the design codes evolution. The seismic behavior of infilled frames is investigated in the companion paper.

Abstract:In this study, industrial single-story RC precast buildings are investigated. Twenty-four case studies have been considered, in which the column height, the beam spans and the seismic hazard level are varied. The seismic design of the selected case studies is performed according to the Italian building code and additional technical documentation. Three-dimensional nonlinear models are defined to perform static and dynamic analyses for the seismic assessment of the selected case studies. Demand/capacity ratios in terms of the selected engineering demand parameters are computed for ten increasing values of the seismic input return period.

Abstract:Different modelling approaches are available for the evaluation of the nonlinear response of structures. The goals of this paper are to determine the implications of two frame modelling strategies, one based on lumped plasticity and the other on distributed plasticity combined with a fibre section modelling, to assess the differences in predicting the structural response of existing RC framed buildings, and to provide guidelines on the range of applicability of the two different modelling approaches. The study is carried out using two RC framed buildings as studies. Both buildings are characterized by seismic deficiencies typical of existing buildings belonging to the Mediterranean building stocks, but with different ductility capacities and collapse mechanisms. For each case study, two 3D numerical models are built in OpenSees, considering the above mentioned models. For each plan direction, two pushover analyses are run on each numerical model with two distributions of forces. The seismic response is assessed at the Damage Limitation (DL), Significant Damage (SD) and Near Collapse (NC) limit states. The seismic responses assessed by the two numerical models showed that the lumped phenomenological plastic hinge model tends to provide more conservative results than the distributed plasticity, fibre-section model, leading to relevant differences especially in case of structures with a low ductile behaviour.

Abstract:The principle objective of this project is to analysis and design a multi-storeyed building [G + 10 (3-dimensional frame)] using SAP2000. The design involves load calculations manually and analyzing the whole structure by SAP2000. The design methods used in SAP2000 analysis are conforming to Indian Standard Code of Practice and features a state-of-the-art user inter face, visualization tools, powerful analysis and design engines with advanced finite element and dynamic analysis capabilities. From model generation, analysis and design to visualization and result verification. The project is designed in accordance with Indian codes, considering various loads such as Reinforced concrete (IS 456-2000), dead load (IS875-1987 part1), live load (IS875-1987 part2), wind load (IS875-1987 part3), seismic load (IS1893-2016 part1) and load combinations are considered as per the (IS875-1987 part-5) code books. The analysis considers seismic zone III and ensures safety by considering dead load, live load, seismic and wind forces, and balancing economy and safety. Structural design is crucial for Civil Engineers, and proper analysis can prevent structure failure and loss of life. Engineers analyze structures considering constraints like serviceability and deformability, following IS codes. Our project focuses on analyzing and designing superstructures like slabs, beams, and columns, considering dead load, live load, seismic and wind forces Response Spectrum Analysis and Shear Wall. Abstract:This paper presents a three-dimensional finite element method based structural analysis model for structural analysis of reinforced concrete high-rise buildings during construction. The model considered the time-dependency of the structural configuration and material properties as well as the effect of the construction rate and shoring stiffness. Uniaxial compression tests of young concrete within 28 days of age were conducted to establish the time-dependent compressive stress-strain relationship of concrete, which was then used as input parameters to the structural analysis model. In-situ tests of a RC high-rise building were conducted, the results of which were used for model verification. Good agreement between the test results and model predictions was achieved. At the end, a parametric study was conducted using the verified model. The results indicated that the floor position and construction rate had significant effect on the shore load, whereas the influence of the shore removal timing and shore stiffiiess have much smaller. It was also found that the floors are more prone to cracking during construction than is ultimate bending failure.

Abstract:Most of the schools in Italy were built before the introduction of the legislation on structural design in seismic areas. Approximately 25,000 buildings are therefore not adequate to current standards and require in-depth assessments of the seismic safety of structures. This research aims to implement a methodology consisting of the use of information modelling for seismic risk analysis. To assess seismic vulnerability, it is also necessary to analyze the seismic hazard. Two approaches are then tested: the first one is related to structural BIM modeling and structural analysis where information are collected through visual screening during inspections and through the study of existing documentations. The second is a more in-depth approach that includes static and dynamic non-destructive testing and structural FEM analysis. The two models were tested on the main building of a middle school in Milan (Italy).

Abstract:The aim of this study is to investigate and to simulate damage mechanisms of concrete structures through the multi-scale approaches. Based on the discrete element method (DEM), the mesoscopic numerical model was developed to simulate the failure process of concrete. The aggregates were simplified as rigid bodies while the surrounding mortar was treated as springs connecting the aggregates. By considering the random distribution of aggregates, the mechanical behavior of concrete was obtained. Based on the constitutive relationship of concrete material generated in the mesoscopic model, the seismic behavior of RC columns and the collapse responses of reinforced concrete frame structures were analyzed by using macroscopic multi-spring model (MS) and DEM. Simulation examples showed that the bridge between the mesoscopic property of concrete materials and the macroscopic behavior of reinforced concrete structures can be set up by using the methodology of multi-scale analysis.

Abstract:In the last decades, particular attention has been paid to the seismic vulnerability of existing reinforced concrete buildings designed for gravity loads only. Such buildings, designed before the introduction of capacity design in modern seismic codes, are very common, particularly in seismic prone countries of the Mediterranean area. Due to poor detailing and lacking of capacity design principles, high vulnerability has been highlighted in several past studies. In this article, inadequate seismic response and peculiar damage pattern are investigated by means of shake table tests performed on a 1:2 scaled 3-story infilled prototype. Particular attention is given to the role of beam-column joints and frame-panel interaction. The effectiveness of the EC8-based assessment approach is then evaluated; both linear and nonlinear numerical models, with different levels of sophistication, have been implemented in order to explore their behavioral aspects.

Abstract:The structure is presumed to be situated in seismic Zones II and V. The mathematical building model (F.E.M Model) of Whole building has been modelled in ETABS 16.2 All the beams and columns are modelled as frame elements. All the slabs are modelled as thin shell elements. To ascertain the seismic load on each floor level of whole structure two types of seismic analysis procedure have been considered as per IS1893-2002 and 2016. Equivalent static approach (linear Static method) and Response spectrum method (Linear Dynamic Method). Parameters considered to understand the seismic response of the multi-storeyed buildings are, Modal Mass participation factor, Modal time period, Lateral displacement, Storey drift, Storey shear of the structure. The whole structural systems are strengthen with vertical shear walls. SAFE (Slab analysis by Finite Element Method) is a software essentially made for analyse and designs of the slabs, since Pile Raft is also a slab therefore SAFE is the ultimate tool for it. Pile Caps have modelled as Slab with Thick plate Action, for base reactions Link between ETABS and SAFE have been used. The parameters consider for finalise the designs of piles and pile caps are, vertical settlement, Punching Shear stress under columns and shear walls and for piles as well. Flexural reinforcements are tabulated in both Longitudinal and transvers direction for the both the faces i.e. Top face and bottom. After all the study a comparison is made between the structure situated in Zone II and Zone V We had observed that when the seismic zones changes and the intensity of seismic forces increases, the design of foundation considerably changes and there is tremendous amount of increase in steel.
Enhancing Seismic Performance of Multi-story Steel Buildings Using Inner Mega Braced Frames

Abstract:damage to buildings. In this study, a multi-story steel building is designed using the ETABS v16 software under vertical loads only. Subsequently, seismic performance was enhanced by employing five different Mega braced frames (MBFs) systems in two cases: in the first case, the five bracing systems are placed within a frame located 6 meters away from the outer frame, while in the second case; the bracing systems were placed within a frame located 12 meters away from the outer frame. The building was then analyzed using nonlinear time history analysis with SAP 2000 V20 software, utilizing seismic data from the El-Centro earthquake available in SAP 2000 V20. The results were compared based on various parameters such as maximum roof displacement, maximum inter-story drift ratio, and maximum base shear. The findings demonstrated an improvement in the building's response, in the first case maximum roof displacement reduction ranging from 36.08% to 48.29% in both directions, and from 36% to 44% for maximum roof displacement in the second case. Maximum inter story- drift ratio also reduced by percentages ranging from 25% to 46% in the first case and 25% to 39% in the second case. From the analysis results, it is evident that the best pattern in the first case is pattern5, while in the second case pattern4 is the best.

Abstract:This work summarizes the results of a series of nonlinear dynamic finite element analyses devoted to assess peculiar aspects in the seismic response of high-rise mega-frame prototypes with outriggers and belt trusses. Thirty- and sixty-storey planar frames, extracted from reference three-dimensional structures composed of an internal symmetric braced core, were designed in accordance with European rules. The core consisted of a concentrically braced frame system, while outriggers were placed every fifteen stories to limit inter-storey drifts and second order effects. Numerical models able to account for material and geometric nonlinearities were developed within an open source platform, using inelastic force-based fibre elements to model structural members and mechanical idealizations to reproduce the behaviour of bolted beam–column and welded gusset-plate connections. Out-of-plane imperfections were explicitly included in the braces to allow for potential buckling mechanisms in both braces and gusset plates.Nonlinear time history analyses (NLTHAs) were performed, in comparison with response spectrum analysis (RSA), aiming to quantify the potential of such systems, when included in the lateral-force resisting system of modern high-rise moment resisting frames (MRFs). Global and local performance were investigated in terms of inter-storey drift and acceleration peak profiles, shear and bending moment demands, as well as axial force–displacement curves and static-to-seismic load ratios in critical braces at different floor levels. Sensitivity to the structure height was explored comparing the responses of the two prototypes. Trends were discussed to show that, if accurately designed and detailed in light of capacity design principles and performance-based design concepts, these systems provide an optimum combination of stiffness and strength.

Abstract:Urban areas reveal particularly vulnerable due to the high concentration of people and, in many cases, their hazard-prone location. Indeed, according to data from the United Nations, about 2/3 of the population will live in large cities by 2050, and the majority of the world's cities are highly exposed to disasters. This paper presents a computational framework to assess the seismic vulnerability and the damage of residential building portfolio in urban areas. First, a surrogated model is proposed to estimate the global capacity of building structures. Monte Carlo simulations are implemented to take into account the uncertainties associated with the material, mechanical, and geometrical parameters. The proposed approach is validated through nonlinear finite element models and a real case study. Then, the proposed computational framework is implemented and applied to a virtual city that is envisioned for being representative of a typical Italian residential building stock. The main achievement of this work is to introduce a new simplified approach for large scale structural analyses to limit the computational efforts while providing reasonable results.

Abstract:. Nowadays, the refined models of simulation to evaluate the seismic damage in an urban area are becoming of paramount interest for the scientific community. Regional seismic damage simulation can potentially provide valuable information that can facilitate decision making, enhance planning for disaster mitigation, and reduce human and economic losses. However, the application of refined models is limited because of their high computational cost and needs of highly experienced users. For these reasons, these approaches remain academic experiences. This study proposes a straightforward approach to the problem, at the same time competitive, to simulate the seismic response and to assess the degree of damage at urban scale. At first, the simulation of the standard building is performed using an equivalent single degree of freedom model. Subsequently, the same approach is extended to a number of regular buildings from a virtual city sample for time-history seismic response analysis. The first part of this work is devoted to present the methodology to prepare the one-degree-of-freedom model of the standard building by comparing it with a refined multi degrees of freedom model as a target. Finally, a seismic damage simulation of a virtual city sample is implemented to demonstrate the capacity and advantages of the proposed method at increasing seismic intensities for damage assessment. It is the starting phase for further multi-hazards analyses at the regional scale through agent-based models.

Abstract:An evaluation of the four analytical methods recommended in FEMA-356 for the estimation of seismic demands is carried out on two instrumented steel buildings. Prior to conducting the FEMA-356 analyses, computer models of each structural system were calibrated to observed response data. One of the two buildings that experienced no visible damage during Northridge was modeled as a three-dimensional system, while the second building that suffered moderate damage during the Northridge earthquake was further tuned to yield a simplified two-dimensional model so that detailed inelastic evaluations could be performed on the model. Dozens of linear and nonlinear computer analyses under both static and seismic loads were carried out on each building, and typical results representing a summary of the findings are presented in this paper. Results of the evaluations provide insight into both modeling issues and the validity of the four analytical procedures outlined in FEMA-356. It is found that calibrating structural models to observed response is sensitive to mass and stiffness modeling assumptions and indirectly to the intensity of the ground motion that has an effect on the participation of nonstructural components. Linear and nonlinear static procedures do not consistently predict interstory drift estimates, a critical parameter in seismic evaluation and design. The linear static approach was found to be conservative in one case study while the findings from the second case study were less conclusive about the validity of each analytical procedure. This suggests that significant changes are warranted in the proposed FEMA-356 Prestandard if it is to be adopted in future design codes or in seismic evaluation studies of existing buildings.
