Abstract:Typical problems of discretized systems (e.g. lumped mass systems) have been analyzed in the previous chapters. In some real cases, the simplified approach of lumped masses is not feasible, then an infinite number of DOFs have to be considered in the analyses. The dynamic problem of systems with distributed mass and elasticity are formulated in this chapter. A Simple structure is considered in order to provide the closed form solution for both free vibrations and forced system analyses.

Abstract:This book presents the basic principles of soil dynamics, and a variety of solutions of practical interest for geotechnical engineering, geophysics and earthquake engineering. Emphasis is on analytical solutions, often including the full derivation of the solution, and giving the main parts of computer programs that can be used to calculate numerical data. Reference is also made to a website from which complete computer programs can be downloaded. Soil behaviour is usually assumed to be linear elastic, but in many cases the effect of viscous damping or hysteretic damping, due to plastic deformations, is also considered. An Integrated Joint Dynamics System for Elastically Jointed Structures

Abstract:Abstract The dynamic behavior of elastic joints strongly affect the dynamic performance of a jointed mechanical system. The dynamic contacts introduced by joint clearances create a system with nonlinear characteristics. Special effort needs to be made to study jointed mechanical systems. This paper presents an integrated joint dynamics system, which can be used to predict the dynamic characteristics of a newly designed structure, or to analyze an existing jointed structure. This joint dynamics system can also be applied as a real time monitoring and diagnosis system when it is connected with a vibration measuring device. The joint dynamics system includes: 1) a theoretical model of jointed structures, in which the joint clearance and joint friction effects are considered; 2) a stochastic simulator which is used to generate vibration data and evaluate system dynamic characteristics; 3) a diagnostic monitoring algorithm for vibration state detection; and 4) a forecasting vibration control scheme. The joint dynamics system is applied to the dynamic analysis of a truss-cell unit structure. The results presented in this paper show that the joint dynamics system is effective.

Nonlinear Dynamics

Abstract:Notwithstanding the presence of some books summarizing specific research bodies on structural systems, reviews on nonlinear dynamics and chaos in mechanical systems and structures are quite few. This paper aims at giving a first contribution in this direction, focusing on chaos in one-dimensional structural mechanics, and reviewing fundamental studies and main outcomes obtained for macromechanical systems and applications in classical areas of mechanical, aeronautical and civil engineering. Research material is presented according to a tentatively comprehensive perspective, by suitably framing the overviewed complex dynamic phenomena of a given class of structures within the underlying continuous/reduced modelling context and the regular phenomena from which they ensue. This is a demanding perspective, which also entails leaving a number of important topics aside. Chaos in cable, beam/arch, and coupled cable-beam structures is reviewed, as highlighted in both engineering-oriented studies and theoretically driven ones, paying attention also to some relevant applications.

Abstract:Dynamic instability in the mechanics of elastic structures is a fascinating topic, with many issues still unsettled. Accordingly, there is a wealth of literature examining the problems from different perspectives (analytical, numerical, experimental etc.), and coverings a wide variety of topics (bifurcations, chaos, strange attractors, imperfection sensitivity, tailor-ability, parametric resonance, conservative or non-conservative systems, linear or non-linear systems, fluid-solid interaction, follower forces, etc.). This paper provides a survey of selected topics of current research interest. It aims to collate the key recent developments and international trends, as well as describe any possible future challenges. A paradigmatic example of Ziegler paradox on the destabilizing effect of small damping is also included.

Abstract:A design strategy for control of buildings experiencing inelastic deformations during seismic response is formulated. The strategy is using weakened, and/or softened, elements in a structural system while adding passive energy dissipation devices (e.g. viscous fluid devices, etc.) in order to control simultaneously accelerations and deformations response during seismic events. A design methodology is developed to determine the locations and the magnitude of weakening and/or softening of structural elements and the added damping while insuring structural stability. A two‐stage design procedure is suggested: (i) first using a nonlinear active control algorithm, to determine the new structural parameters while insuring stability, then (ii) determine the properties of equivalent structural parameters of passive system, which can be implemented by removing or weakening some structural elements, or connections, and by addition of energy dissipation systems. Passive dampers and weakened elements are designed using an optimization algorithm to obtain a response as close as possible to an actively controlled system. A case study of a five‐story building subjected to El Centro ground motion, as well as to an ensemble of simulated ground motions, is presented to illustrate the procedure. The results show that following the design strategy, a control of both peak inter‐story drifts and total accelerations can be obtained. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:Earthquakes rank among the most destructive manifestations of the Earth's dynamics. Can they be predicted? This is often the first question students ask. To answer that right away: no, at present it is not possible to anticipate the date, site and magnitude of future seismic events. However, there does exist a general framework to describe observations related to earthquakes and understand the processes that lead to their occurrence: the seismic cycle. This chapter introduces the reader to the friction laws from a historical to state of the art perspective. It then deals with mechanical modelling of the seismic cycle through simple analog models and finally presents some open questions and directions for future research.

Abstract:International Journal of Structural Stability and Dynamics, Ahead of Print. The high-damping viscoelastic (VE) materials are widely used to reduce unwanted vibrations in civil structures. However, the significant frequency and temperature dependences from high-damping VE materials cause a challenge in efficiently analyzing the structural dynamic behaviors. The aim of this study is to propose a generalized dynamic analysis method for the linear structural system with VE elements. The implementation steps and advantages of the dynamic analysis method are presented. In this method, the frequency-dependent matrices and non-proportional damping induced by VE elements are fully considered in modal coordinates, and then the state-space representation converted from the modal-based transfer function is adopted to implement the time-domain simulation. Any popular VE constitutive models which accurately describe frequency-dependent matrices can be applied to the method. The number of the state-space representation can be adjusted according to the interested frequency range. Numerical applications performed on a viscoelastically damped structure, a VE base-isolated structure, and a structure with a VE tuned mass damper (TMD) demonstrate the numerical accuracy, efficiency, and generality of the proposed dynamic analysis method.

Abstract:In the design of lightweight structures, both the dynamics and durability must be taken into account. In this paper, a methodology for the combined optimization of structural dynamics, lightweight design, and lifetime with discrete vibration engineering measures is developed and discussed using a demonstration structure. A two-sided welded bending beam is excited at the centre and optimal parameters for tuned mass dampers (TMD) are searched, satisfying the requirements for the dynamic behaviour, the overall mass, and the lifetime of the weldings. It is shown that the combination of a reduced order model with the implementation of the structural stress approach at critical welds enables an efficient evaluation of certain design concepts in the time domain. Using this approach, multi-criterial optimization methods are used to identify the best set of parameters of the TMD to reduce the structural vibrations and enhance the durability.

Abstract:Dynamic stability of structures is an essential topic in civil engineering analysis and design because collapse of critical structures due to dynamic excitations would cause loss of properties or even fatalities. This paper conducts theoretical analysis and numerical simulation investigations on both stability and responses of viscoelastic columns with semi-rigid connections/supports subjected to axial parametric loads. The equation of motion for the viscoelastic column is derived and decoupled into an ordinary differential equation with periodic coefficients by describing the viscoelasticity as the linear Kelvin–Voigt model. Theoretical analysis is performed by the method of harmonic balance and the approximate boundaries of dynamic stability are obtained. A novel numerical simulation method is proposed to investigate both dynamic stability and vibration responses of viscoelastic columns with semi-rigid connections. The approximate boundaries are calibrated by the numerical results. The effects of the material's viscoelasticity, the supports' rigidity, damping, and the static and dynamic component loads on the column stability are investigated through the numerical analysis. Two key findings of the study are that the greater the rigidity of the supports, the larger both the natural frequency and the critical dynamic load; and the viscosity of materials has a great positive impact on the dynamic stability of viscoelastic columns. The proposed method can be extended to systems under arbitrary periodic parametric excitations.

Abstract:This paper presents an approach for the optimal design of a new retrofi t technique called weakening and damping that is valid for civil engineering inelastic structures.An alternative design methodology is developed with respect to the existing ones that is able to determine the locations and the magnitude of weakening and/or softening of structural elements and adding damping while insuring structural stability.An optimal polynomial controller that is a summation of polynomials in nonlinear states is used in Phase 1 of the method to reduce the peak response quantities of seismically excited nonlinear or hysteretic systems.The main advantage of the optimal polynomial controller is that it is able to automatically stabilize the structural system.The optimal design of a shear-type structure is used as an example to illustrate the feasibility of the proposed approach,which leads to a reduction of both peak inter-story drifts and peak total accelerations.

Abstract:A novel method is presented for the response quantification of piecewise linear multi-degree-of-freedom systems to arbitrary general loadings. The dynamical system in each piecewise linear branch is recast, through a real, nonlinear, and invertible transformation into an undamped and decoupled system posed in canonical form. Two procedures are then presented for the response quantification of the resulting independent equations. The step-by-step piecewise exact method is first adopted to compute the response in the time-domain by means of a recurrence formula derived from exact evaluation of the equation of motion. A frequency-domain approach is then developed whereby the closed-form solution to harmonic components of the excitation, decomposed by means of discrete Fourier transform, is obtained. The solutions associated with the piecewise linear segments are synthesised to construct the time history of the response. Numerical investigations on the analysis of a block rocking on a linear viscoelastic isolation system and the analysis of a bilinear secondary oscillator vibrating on a linear structure are presented to indicate the utility of the method.

Abstract:A novel geomechanics concept is presented for studying the behavior of geomaterials and structures by capturing the underlying dynamics as realistically as possible for earthquake excitation applied in time domain. Enormous amount of damages caused to infrastructures during recent earthquakes in all over the world indicate that there is a considerable room for improvement. Causes for extensive damages are generally attributed to poor soil conditions at the region. It is interesting to note that all structures in a region with poor soil condition do not suffer similar damages; in fact, some of them remain damage-free. There are many reasons for this including inability to model the soil-structural systems properly, predict the future design earthquake time history at the site, model the dynamic amplification of responses caused by the excitation, incorporate major sources of nonlinearity and energy dissipation, and most importantly consider the presence of a considerable amount of uncertainty at every phase of the evaluation process. The most recent research trend is to capture complicated behavior by conducting multiple deterministic analyses by taking advantage of current significantly improved computational capability. By conducting few dozens of deterministic analyses at very intelligently selected points, structures can be designed more seismic load-tolerant. The performance based seismic design concept recently introduced in the U.S. is showcased in this paper. The requirements in the guidelines appear to be reasonable. The concept is expected to change the current engineering design paradigm. The authors believe that the proposed alternatives to the simulation and the basic random vibration concept.

Abstract:The paper aims to identify the situations in which a complex elastic system, which is subject to mechanical vibrations, can act as a dynamic absorber of vibrations for certain frequencies. The conditions that the system must fulfill in order to achieve this goal are determined and then a calculation example is presented. The method is interesting because it allows to avoid attaching an absorber specially built for this, a situation that complicates the project and increases manufacturing costs.
