Abstract:The charging and discharging characteristics of a latent thermal energy storage (LTES) system were studied experimentally. Pure paraffin with melting point of 62 degrees C similar to 64 degrees C and composite paraffin/expanded graphite (EG) PCMs containing 7% and 10% mass fraction of EG were used as the phase change materials (PCMs). A variety of experiments were conducted with different hot water temperatures and flow rates for heat storage and heat retrieval. The time-duration of the charging and discharging processes and the efficiency of the system which are the important factors of LTES were discussed. The results showed that natural convection played a crucial role in the heat transfer during the charging process of paraffin, but conduction was the main heat transfer mechanism during the discharging process of paraffin. The thermal conductivity of the composite PCM is distinctly enhanced, whereas natural convection is reduced because the paraffin is absorbed in the porous structure of the EG. The higher flow rate was, the higher charging and discharging rate would be. During the charging process, the large temperature difference between the hot water temperature and the initial PCM temperature would occur when the hot water temperature was high, which resulted in the accelerated phase change process due to the enhanced natural convection that could be seen clearly when the PCM was paraffin.
