Abstract:Biochar, renowned for its abundant raw material sources, biocompatibility, and environmental friendliness, has demonstrated its efficacy in enhancing the thermal conductivity of phase change materials (PCMs) and facilitating improved heat transfer within latent heat storage (LHS) systems. However, the practical applicability of biochar-based composite PCM in LHS systems necessitates further experimental evaluation. It remains uncertain whether biochar-based composite PCM, with enhanced thermal conductivity, surpasses the performance of pure PCM in demanding LHS system applications. There remains a paucity of detailed experimental investigations on biochar-loaded PCM in LHS systems. This study addresses this gap by conducting a comprehensive comparative analysis of the temperature distribution and thermal performance during charging and discharging processes among pure paraffin, biochar/paraffin, and expanded graphite (EG)/paraffin composite PCMs, utilizing a selfbuilt LHS system. Characterization results reveal that the thermal conductivity of paraffin increased from 0.293 to 0.366 and 0.56 W/(m & sdot;K) with the incorporation of 10 wt% biochar and 2 wt% EG. Additionally, the cycle time for charging and discharging with pure paraffin as the PCM was 93.92 min. With the addition of biochar and EG, the cycle time was extended to 107 min and shortened to 57.08 min, indicating a 13.93 % increase and a 39.22 % decrease, respectively. Hence, incorporating biochar is anticipated to exacerbate heat transfer during the charging process but improve heat transfer during discharging, leading to an overall cycle time extension. This necessitates careful consideration when employing biochar as a thermal conductivity enhancer for PCMs.
