Strong Local Coordination Structure Effects on Subnanometer PtOx Clusters over CeO2 Nanowires Probed by Low-Temperature CO Oxidation

Abstract:A fundamental understanding of the structural effects of supported metal catalysts at the molecular level is extremely important for developing high-performance catalysts that are widely used in industry, which is still a longstanding attractive but challenging topic in multidisciplinary fields. In this work, we report the strong effects of local coordination structures on the catalytic activity of subnanometric PtOx clusters over CeO2 nanowires in low-temperature CO oxidation as a probe reaction. Atoms and subnanometric clusters of Pt were deposited to form the coordination structure of PtOx on the well-defined CeO2 nanowires with mainly exposed (110) facets. The reactivity of active sites and the variation of the local coordination structures of the PtOx sites were deeply investigated with in situ spectroscopic experiments, assisted by density functional theory simulations. According to our observation, although the highly dispersed Pt sites at the subnanometric scale could provide increased accessible sites, some of the Pt sites did not show high activity for CO oxidation due to the increased surrounding oxygen that seemed to overstabilize the Pt atoms. An increased proportion of both adsorbed CO intermediates on oxidized Pt sites and the interfacial lattice oxygen of PtOx clusters tended to become inactive on samples with a high coordination number of oxygen bonded to Pt sites (CN(Pt-O)), leading to the loss of effective active sites and a decrease in the catalytic activity. A relatively small CN(Pt-O) value in the subnanometric PtOx/CeO2 NWs, which was found to be the appropriate structure for their catalytic performance, remarkably increased the activity by about 1/2 order of magnitude. We believe our investigation on the interfacial coordination structure effects of subnanometric PtOx clusters dispersed on CeO2 nanowires can provide some new basic chemical insights into the metal-support interfacial interactions of Pt/CeO2 catalysts for understanding their catalytic performance in some relevant reactions.

Abstract:The metal oxides CuMnCe and CeY washcoats on cordierite were prepared using an impregnation method, and then used as support for the active Pt component to prepare the Pt/CuMnCe and Pt/CeY monolithic catalysts for the deep oxidation of VOCs. In comparison with the Pt/CeY, CuMnCe, and CeY monolithic catalysts, the Pt/CuMnCe monolithic catalyst shows an excellent performance for toluene, ethyl acetate, and n-hexane oxidation and the T90% is low to 216, 200 and 260 degrees C, respectively. The active components Pt/PtO and CuMnCe result in a better synergetic interaction, which promote the catalyst reducibility, increase the oxygen mobility, and enhance the adsorption and activation of organic molecules. Abstract:Considering the high activity in CO oxidation as well as the related reactions, the surface structure of Cu/Pt bimetallic system and its interaction with CO and O 2 molecules have been revisited with low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) in combination with density-functional theory calculations (DFT). The extensively concerned Cu/Pt subsurface alloy (Cu-SSA) is clearly demonstrated with relative deactivation to CO and drastically weakened binding to O. In contrast, the submonolayer Cu film on Pt(111) manifests a significant enhancement in activating the O 2 molecules while reserving the strong binding to CO at the uncovered Pt area. Detailed control experiments corroborated by DFT calculations revealed that the Cu/Pt interface serves as the critical sites for both O 2 activation and the CO oxidation reaction. Therefore, the submonolayer Cu film may register a more promising catalyst structure than the Cu-SSA configuration for the Cu/Pt bimetallic system.

Abstract:The elevation of the low-temperature oxidation activity for Pt/CeO2 catalysts is challenging to meet the increasingly stringent requirements for effectively eliminating carbon monoxide (CO) from automobile exhaust. Although reducing activation is a facile strategy for boosting reactivity, past research has mainly concentrated on applying H-2 as the reductant, ignoring the reduction capabilities of CO itself, a prevalent component of automobile exhaust. Herein, atomically dispersed Pt/CeO2 was fabricated and activated by CO, which could lower the 90% conversion temperature (T-90) by 256 degrees C and achieve a 20-fold higher CO consumption rate at 200 degrees C. The activated Pt/CeO2 catalysts showed exceptional catalytic oxidation activity and robust hydrothermal stability under the simulated working conditions for gasoline or diesel exhausts. Characterization results illustrated that the CO activation triggered the formation of a large portion of Pt-0 terrace sites, acting as inherent active sites for CO oxidation. Besides, CO activation weakened the Pt-O-Ce bond strength to generate a surface oxygen vacancy (V-o). It served as the oxygen reservoir to store the dissociated oxygen and convert it into active dioxygen intermediates. Conversely, H-2 activation failed to stimulate V-o, but triggered a deactivating transformation of the Pt nanocluster into inactive PtxOy in the presence of oxygen. The present work offers coherent insight into the upsurging effect of CO activation on Pt/CeO2, aiming to set up a valuable avenue in elevating the efficiency of eliminating CO, C3H6, and NH3 from automobile exhaust.
Theoretical Investigations of Pt-1@Ceo2 Single-Atom Catalyst for Co Oxidation

Abstract:In the present study, we perform systematic density functional investigations on the single-atom Pt catalysts dispersed on CeO2 (111), (110), and (100) surfaces. The structural and electronic properties of these SACs and their corresponding catalytic activity for CO oxidation are discussed. It is shown that the single-atom Pt substitution of a lattice Ce ion is thermodynamically stable on each ceria surface. On the (111) and (100) surfaces, the single Pt atom is found to exist at an oxidation state of +4 upon replacement of Ce4+, while, on the (110) surface, it exhibits a planar structure with a reduced oxidation state of +2 due to the spontaneous formation of surface peroxide O(2)(2-)species. On all of the surfaces, CO oxidation is found to follow the Mars-van Krevelen mechanism. It is the single-atom Pt, rather than the lattice Ce, that acts as the electron acceptor/donor in the redox processes during the whole catalytic cycle. This work provides insights on the significant role of a single metal atom on reducible oxide of ceria and others.
Facet-dependent electronic state of Pt single atoms anchoring on CeO2 nanocrystal for CO (preferential) oxidation

Abstract:Tuning the electronic state and local structure of single-atom dispersed metals is important to improve the performance of single-atom catalysts. Here, we find that the electronic structure of Pt single atoms (Pt1) depends on the facets of CeO2. Various characterizations and density functional theory calculations demonstrate that Pt1 anchored on the (110) facet of CeO2 nanorods exhibits a positively charged state, while it approaches the metallic state on the (100) facet of CeO2 nanocubes. The different Pt1 states on these facets are attributed to the Pt-O-Ce microstructures with different electron transfer patterns. The positively charged Pt1 shows much weaker adsorption of CO which is favorable for its complete oxidation at lower temperatures. In contrast, the metallic Pt1 can facilitate the activation of H2 in the form of dissociation. The activated H species on metallic Pt1 then promote the preferential oxidation of CO to a greater extent and significantly reduce the reaction barrier. This study provides important implications for tailoring the electronic structure of single-atom centers for heterogeneous catalysis by bonding to specific facet supports.

Abstract:Exploring the state-of-the-art heterogeneous catalysts has been a general concern for sustainable and clean energy. Here, Pt-embedded CuO x-CeO2 multicore-shell (Pt/CuO x-CeO2 MS) composites are fabricated at room temperature via a one-pot and template-free procedure for catalyzing CO oxidation, a classical probe reaction, showing a volcano-shaped relationship between the composition and catalytic activity. We experimentally unravel that the Pt/CuO x-CeO2 MS composites are derived from an interfacial autoredox process, where Pt nanoparticles (NPs) are in situ encapsulated by self-assembled ceria nanospheres with CuO x clusters adhered through deposition/precipitation-calcination process. Only Cu-O and Pt-Pt coordination structures are determined for CuO x clusters and Pt NPs in Pt/CuO x-CeO2 MS, respectively. Importantly, the close vicinity between Pt and CeO2 benefits to more oxygen vacancies in CeO2 counterparts and results in thin oxide layers on Pt NPs. Meanwhile, the introduction of CuO x clusters is crucial for triggering synergistic catalysis, which leads to high resistance to aggregation of Pt NPs and improvement of catalytic performance. In CO oxidation reaction, both Ptδ+-CO and Cu+-CO can act as active sites during CO adsorption and activation. Nonetheless, redundant content of Pt or Cu will induce a strongly bound Pt-O-Ce or Cu-[O x]-Ce structures in air-calcinated Pt/CuO x-CeO2 MS composites, respectively, which are both deleterious to catalytic reactivity. As a result, the composition-dependent catalytic activity and superior durability of Pt/CuO x-CeO2 MS composites toward CO oxidation reaction are achieved. This work should be instructive for fabricating desirable multicomponent catalysts composed of noble metal and bimetallic oxide composites for diverse heterogeneous catalysis.

Abstract:To improve fuel efficiency, advanced combustion engines are being designed to minimize the amount of heat wasted in the exhaust. Hence, future generations of catalysts must perform at temperatures that are 100°C lower than current exhaust-treatment catalysts. Achieving low-temperature activity, while surviving the harsh conditions encountered at high engine loads, remains a formidable challenge. In this study, we demonstrate how atomically dispersed ionic platinum (Pt2+) on ceria (CeO2), which is already thermally stable, can be activated via steam treatment (at 750°C) to simultaneously achieve the goals of low-temperature carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation activity while providing outstanding hydrothermal stability. A new type of active site is created on CeO2 in the vicinity of Pt2+, which provides the improved reactivity. These active sites are stable up to 800°C in oxidizing environments.
Synergistic Effects of CeO2/Cu2O on CO Catalytic Oxidation: Electronic Interaction and Oxygen Defect

Abstract:For CO catalytic oxidation, Cu and Ce species are of great importance, between which the synergistic effect is worth investigating. In this work, CeO2/Cu2O with Cu2O {111} and {100} planes were comparatively explored on CO catalytic oxidation to reveal the effects of interfacial electronic interactions and oxygen defects. The activity result demonstrates that CeO2/o-Cu2O {111} has superior performance compared with CeO2/c-Cu2O {100}. Credit to the coordination unsaturated copper atoms (CuCUS) on o-Cu2O {111} surface, the interfacial electronic interactions on CeO2/o-Cu2O {111} are more obvious than those on CeO2/c-Cu2O {100}, leading to richer oxygen defect generation, better redox and activation abilities of CO and O2 reactants. Furthermore, the reaction mechanism of CeO2/o-Cu2O {111} on CO oxidation is revealed, i.e., CO and O2 are adsorbed on the CuCUS on Cu2O {111} and oxygen defect of CeO2, respectively, and then synergistically promote the CO oxidation to CO2. The work sheds light on the designing optimized ceria and copper-based catalysts and the mechanism of CO oxidation.
Controlling Activity of Heterogeneous Cu Single‐Atom Catalysts by Fine‐Tuning the Redox Properties of CeO2‐TiO2 Supports

Abstract:Understanding and enhancing the activity of heterogeneous single‐atom catalysts (SACs) are indispensable aspects to use them in industrial applications. Among these, low‐temperature CO oxidation is considered as a model reaction for testing a wide‐range of oxidation catalysts, and as an essential process for the exhaust aftertreatment in modern combustion engines. We demonstrate that the activity of heterogeneous Cu/CeO2‐TiO2 SAC catalysts can be fine‐tuned by controlling the Ce/Ti ratio in CeO2‐TiO2 supports, with the highest catalytic activity achieved for a Ce/Ti molar ratio of 0.18. Based on DRIFT, EEL, and EPR spectroscopies, together with high‐resolution electron microscopy and H2‐TPR measurements, we infer that the optimized Ce/Ti ratio correlates with i) highest dispersion of separate CeO2 particles on TiO2 surface, ii) more facile reduction of Ce4+ to Ce3+, and iii) enhanced formation of −Cu2+−O−Ce4+− ⇆ −Cu1+−◻−Ce3+− redox shuttles, which play a dual role for CO adsorption and O2‐activation. These results extend our understanding of heterogeneous metal single‐atom catalysts and constitute a robust approach for the rational control of their catalytic performance in technically relevant applications.

Abstract:Ceria-supported atomically dispersed Pt is of great interest in CO oxidation due to their unique catalytic performance and high metal utilization. However, the intrinsic activity of the Pt1/CeO2 single atom catalysts may not be desirable due to the overstabilization of Pt2+ species in the CeO2 matrix. Herein, the local environment of Pt2+ species was tailored by introducing a tungsten oxide additive into the Pt1/CeO2 catalyst, achieving a dramatic improvement in catalytic performance for CO oxidation at low temperatures. The optimized catalyst with 2.5 wt% W loading achieved 100 % CO conversion at 150 degrees C, which was 120 degrees C lower than that of the unmodified Pt/CeO2 catalyst. Through in situ infrared spectroscopy and temperature-programmed reduction characterizations, as well as theoretical calculations, we concluded that the tungsten additive modulated the interactions between Pt2+ species and CeO2. Thus, the reducibility of Pt was enhanced, which facilitated the formation of catalytically active metallic Pt0 species during the reaction.

Abstract:We have developed a series of Co-Cu bimetallic oxide nanocatalysts using an environmentally friendly water phase synthesis method, demonstrating significant potential in catalyzing the CO oxidation reaction. The 0.3Co3O4/0.7CuO nano-hybrid, with a feed ratio of 3:7 for Cobalt(II) chloride hexahydrate to Copper(II) chloride dihydrate, exhibited a CO catalytic oxidation T 90 approximately 70 degrees C lower than that of a single transition metal oxide material. Building on this, we enhanced the catalysts by incorporating CeO2 nanoparticles to produce Co3O4/CuO/CeO2 oxide nanocatalysts. By varying the amount of CeO2 nanoparticles added to the 0.3Co3O4/ 0.7CuO catalyst, we achieved further improvement in the CO oxidation performance. Specifically, the T 90 of the CO catalytic oxidation reaction for the 0.3Co3O4/0.7CuO/0.7CeO2 material was approximately 30 degrees C lower than that of 0.3Co3O40.7CuO. Various characterization methods, such as XRD, EDX, and in situ FT-IR, were employed to investigate the impact of different components on the CO oxidation process and the potential reaction mechanism. The results indicated that the introduction of CeO2 successfully enhanced the activity and stability of the catalysts.

Abstract:Copper, renowned for its intrinsic C-C coupling ability, emerges as a promising electrocatalyst for converting CO2 into value-added C2+ products. However, improving selectivity and stability remains a critical hurdle. This study presents a novel strategy: integrating CeO2 nanoparticles onto CuO nanosheets (CuO NSs). This synergistic approach effectively stabilizes the mixed oxidation state of Cu (Cu+ and Cu0) during the reaction, as confirmed in situ X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (XAFs). In situ attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) reveals that CeO2 promotes the formation of the crucial *COH intermediate, facilitating C-C coupling. The optimized catalyst demonstrates exceptional performance, achieving a Faraday efficiency of 64.1% for C2H4 production at 600 mA/cm2. This research underscores the potential of surface engineering to enhance the stability and activity of Cu-based catalysts for CO2 electroreduction.

Abstract:CO2 conversion plays a critical role in sustainable carbon cycling. In this work, reduction of CO2 over three Pt-decorated/undecorated CeO2-based catalysts (partially reduced CeO2(111), Pt decorated partially reduced CeO2(111), and Pt decorated partially reduced Sm0.2Ce0.8O1.9(111) (SDC) surfaces) is investigated via both density functional theory (DFT) and electrical conductivity relaxation (ECR) methods. DFT results indicate that a Pt cluster over a CeO2-based surface could effectively enhance CO2 adsorption energies and depress the energy barriers for CO2 dissociation, beneficial to the CO2 conversion. This should be ascribed to the electron transferring from the CeO2-based surface to the Pt cluster, which makes the Pt d-band center closer to the Fermi level and thus enhances the interaction between CO2 and Pt d-electrons. Intensive investigation indicates that without the Pt cluster, the CO2 molecule needs to form CO32- first and then dissociates into CO2 different from the direct activation of CO2 on the Pt cluster. Importantly, the microkinetic analyses of CO2 reactions suggest that the CO2 reduction rates follow the sequence of Pt-decorated SDC surface > Pt-decorated CeO2 surface > CeO2 surface. This result is consistent with ECR measurements.
Memory-dictated dynamics of single-atom Pt on CeO2 for CO oxidation

Abstract:Single atoms of platinum group metals on CeO2 represent a potential approach to lower precious metal requirements for automobile exhaust treatment catalysts. Here we show the dynamic evolution of two types of single-atom Pt (Pt1) on CeO2, i.e., adsorbed Pt1 in Pt/CeO2 and square planar Pt1 in PtATCeO2, fabricated at 500 °C and by atom-trapping method at 800 °C, respectively. Adsorbed Pt1 in Pt/CeO2 is mobile with the in situ formation of few-atom Pt clusters during CO oxidation, contributing to high reactivity with near-zero reaction order in CO. In contrast, square planar Pt1 in PtATCeO2 is strongly anchored to the support during CO oxidation leading to relatively low reactivity with a positive reaction order in CO. Reduction of both Pt/CeO2 and PtATCeO2 in CO transforms Pt1 to Pt nanoparticles. However, both catalysts retain the memory of their initial Pt1 state after reoxidative treatments, which illustrates the importance of the initial single-atom structure in practical applications.

Abstract:The oxidative properties and characterization of CuO, CeO2 and CuO/CeO2 catalysts were examined by means of a CO micro-reactor GC system, TPR, XPS and X-ray diffraction Rietveld methods. The results show that either CuO or CeO2 activity is quite low for CO oxidation. However, when CuO and CeO2 are mixed, the oxidative activity of the catalyst increases significantly, probably owing to the valency status of copper species (Cu2+ and Cu+) on the CeO2 surface, the dispersion and reducibility. XPS surface analysis shows that CuO loading is very important in forming of either Cu2+ or 4(+) Cu+. Rietveld analysis shows that some CuO, which has smaller ion radius than Cc, enters the CeO2 lattice after CuO and CeO2 are mixed. When the CuO loading reaches 5.0 %, the size of CuO crystals is a minimum (6.1 nm) and the micro-strain value is a maximum (2.86 x 10(-3)), resulting in high surface energy and the best activity for CO oxidation.
