Abstract:By effectively controlling the strong metal -support interaction (SMSI), the formation of acid sites and oxygen vacancies (O v ) on the Pt/CeO 2 catalyst was optimized. The efficient co -combustion of toluene and CO on Pt/ CeO 2 -450 was achieved. In the dual -pollutant system, when the conversion rate was 90 %, the corresponding conversion temperatures of toluene and CO were 165 degrees C and 173 degrees C, respectively. With the increase of SMSI, the catalytic activity of Pt/CeO 2 showed a trend of first increase and then decrease. This was proportional to the content of weak acid sites, medium acid sites, and O v generated on their surfaces. Compared with the combustion of a single pollutant, the result displays that toluene and CO had significant competitive adsorption on Pt/CeO 2 . The inhibition of toluene on CO also showed the same trend as the catalytic activity with the increase of SMSI. Under the double inhibition, Pt/CeO 2 exhibited preferential selectivity for toluene combustion. However, the in situ DRIFTS results showed that this competitive adsorption phenomenon did not interfere with the combustion reaction path. The co -combustion of toluene and CO follows independent reaction paths. This work provides valuable insights and ideas for realizing the development of efficient and environmentally friendly catalysts through SMSI regulation.

Abstract:The metal oxides CuMnCe and CeY washcoats on cordierite were prepared using an impregnation method, and then used as support for the active Pt component to prepare the Pt/CuMnCe and Pt/CeY monolithic catalysts for the deep oxidation of VOCs. In comparison with the Pt/CeY, CuMnCe, and CeY monolithic catalysts, the Pt/CuMnCe monolithic catalyst shows an excellent performance for toluene, ethyl acetate, and n-hexane oxidation and the T90% is low to 216, 200 and 260 degrees C, respectively. The active components Pt/PtO and CuMnCe result in a better synergetic interaction, which promote the catalyst reducibility, increase the oxygen mobility, and enhance the adsorption and activation of organic molecules. Enhanced catalytic oxidation of diluted ethylene oxide on Pt/CeO2 catalyst under low temperature

Abstract:A thorough catalytic combustion toward diluted ethylene oxide (EO) is demonstrated. The Pt active phase and CeO2 support were selected to introduce a synergistic effect. As a result, a superior catalytic activity and less severe coking trend were observed on the Pt/CeO2 catalyst when compared with another widely-used Pt/Al2O3 catalyst. The XPS spectra and H-2-TPR profiles evidenced that the Pt/CeO2 catalyst has both stronger metal support interaction and more abundant oxygen vacancies, which is believed at the heart of its excellent performance. Finally, the degradation pathways of EO were explored by in-situ DRIFTS. The weak H2O affinity of Pt/ CeO2 catalyst can inhibit the polycondensation reaction and result in the favorable degradation of EO. In contrast, abundant hydroxyl species were present on the hydrophilic Pt/Al2O3 catalyst surface, which may serve as acid sites and complicate the EO degradation, and therefore various side products and carbon deposits would appear in this case.

Abstract:A series of nanostructured Pt-Au/MOx-CeO₂ (M = Mn, Fe, Ti) catalysts were prepared and their catalytic performance for the co-oxidation of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen (H₂) were evaluated at room temperature. The results showed that MOx promoted the CO oxidation of Pt-Au/CeO₂, but only the TiO₂ could enhance co-oxidation of CO and H₂ over Pt-Au/CeO₂. Related characterizations were conducted to clarify the promoting effect of MOx. Temperature-programmed reduction of hydrogen (H₂-TPR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results suggested that MOx could improve the charge transfer from Au sites to CeO₂, resulting in a high concentration of Ce3+ and cationic Au species which benefits for the CO oxidation. In-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (In-situ DRIFTS) results indicated that TiO₂ could facilitate the oxidation of H₂ over the Pt-Au/TiO₂-CeO₂ catalyst.

Abstract:Here we reported the effect of the Cu-Mn-Ce-SiO2 (CMC-SiO2) interaction on the physical and chemical aspects of the catalytic combustion of toluene by adjusting the loading amount of the CMC mixed oxide on SiO2.Notably,the CMC/KIT-6 catalyst with low CMC loading performed poorly with an obvious deactivation,owing to the inhibition of the metal oxides active sites,while the activity recovered after washing away some SiO2.The catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD),H2 temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR),N2 adsorption,and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM).Although there is no change in crystal structure after loading on SiO2,active oxygen species immigrate from lattice to surface for SiO2 surface rich in hydroxyl groups and having high dispersion of CMC,leading to deactivation of the CMC catalyst.However,it is worth mentioning that the lattice oxygen played a key role in catalytic combustion.The activity of the CMC catalyst recovered when the quantity of lattice oxygen increased upon removing surface-OH groups by calcination or removing some SiO2 by alkali washing.

Abstract:Formaldehyde (HCHO) and carbon monoxide (CO) are both common air pollutants and hazardous to human body. It is imperative to develop the catalyst that is able to efficiently remove these pollutants. In this work, we activated Pt-MnO2 under different conditions for highly active oxidation of HCHO and CO, and the catalyst activated under CO displayed superior performance. A suite of complementary characterizations revealed that the catalyst activated with CO created the highly dispersed Pt nanoparticles to maintain a more positively charged state of Pt, which appropriately weakens the Mn-O bonding strength in the adjacent region of Pt for efficient supply of active oxygen during the reaction. Compared with other catalysts activated under different conditions, the CO-activated Pt-MnO2 displays much higher activity for oxidation of HCHO and CO. This research contributes to elucidating the mechanism for regulating the oxidation activity of Pt-based catalyst.

Abstract:Catalytic oxidation has been considered as one of the most promising strategies for the removal of indoor HCHO which causes multiple health problems. Alloyed Au-Pt showed potential for catalytic oxidation reactions, but the reports on HCHO oxidation are limited. In addition,understanding on the catalytic mechanism is lacking. In this work, a sodium citrate assistant photodeposition process was developed to fabricate highly dispersed dual Au-Pt alloy with 2–3 nm on the surface of TiO2. The turnover frequency of Au-Pt/TiO2 (68.6 h-1) is much higher than that of Pt/TiO2 (19.9 h-1). This enhancement was also confirmed on different TiO2 supports and with different Pt loading. Based on the experimental and density functional theory calculations, it was found that the alloyed Au-Pt has more metallic Pt and is beneficial for the adsorption and dissociation of oxygen. Therefore, the rapid conversion of dioxymethylene species to formate species, with reduced reaction barrier, promotes the performance in catalytic oxidation of HCHO.

Abstract:The self-inhibition behavior due to CO poisoning on Pt metal particles strongly impairs the performance of CO oxidation. It is an effective method to use reducible metal oxides for supporting Pt metal particles to avoid self-inhibition and to improve catalytic performance. In this work, we used in situ reductions of chloroplatinic acid on commercial Fe3O4 powder to prepare heterogeneousstructured Pt/Fe3O4 catalysts in the solution of ethylene glycol. The heterogeneous Pt/Fe3O4 catalysts achieved a better catalytic performance of CO oxidation compared with the Fe3O4 powder. The temperatures of 50% and 90% CO conversion were achieved above 260°C and 290°C at Pt/Fe3O4, respectively. However, they are accomplished on Fe3O4 at temperatures higher than 310°C. XRD, XPS, and H2-TPR results confirmed that the metallic Pt atoms have a strong synergistic interaction with the Fe3O4 supports. TGA results and transient DRIFTS results proved that the Pt metal particles facilitate the release of lattice oxygen and the formation of oxygen vacancies on Fe3O4. The combined results of O2-TPD and DRIFTS indicated that the activation step of oxygen molecules at surface oxygen vacancies could potentially be the rate-determining step of the catalytic CO oxidation at Pt/ Fe3O4 catalysts. The reaction pathway involves a Pt-assisted Mars-van Krevelen (MvK) mechanism.

Abstract:A group of CuOx-CeO2 catalysts for preferential oxidation of carbon monoxide (CO-PROX) is designed by constructing different distribution status of Cu species on similar CeO2 support to adjust the Cu–Ce interaction strength. Cycled temperature programmed reduction by hydrogen (H2-TPR) indicates the strength of Cu–Ce interaction can impact the amount and redox properties of surface highly dispersed CuOx and strongly bonded Cu-[Ox]-Ce species, which respectively determines the catalytic performance at low and high temperature. Temperature programed desorption of H2 (H2-TPD) reveals the presence of large amounts of Cu-[Ox]-Ce species can inhibit H2 adsorption and dissociation, which increases the O2 selectivity toward CO oxidation. Moreover, temperature programmed desorption of CO2 (CO2-TPD) and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectra (DRIFTs) illustrates that H2O and CO2 influences the low-temperature catalytic performance mainly by competitive adsorption with CO on surface highly dispersed reactive Cu+ sites. This work aims to shed light on the underlying Cu–Ce interaction regime, and guide the design of high-performance CuO–CeO2 catalysts in realistic reaction conditions.

Abstract:Metal-support interaction (MSI) has been widely recognized to be playing a pivotal role in regulating the catalytic activity of various reactions. In this work, the degree of MSI between Pt and CeO2 support was finely tuned by adjusting the activation condition, and the obtained catalysts were tested for the oxidative abatement of CO and HCHO under ambient conditions. The characterization of catalysts shows that activation of strongly interacting Pt-CeO2 at higher temperatures by H-2 leads to a weaker MSI with increased electron density of Pt, and this modification of local electronic properties is demonstrated to result in enhanced O-2 adsorption/activation to prevent the CO self-poisoning effect, while it abates the activity of CO adsorption/activation and oxidation of adsorbed CO. The Pt-CeO2 catalyst with a moderate MSI, which is able to balance each step in the catalytic cycle over Pt and Pt-CeO2 interface domains, displays the highest activity for CO/HCHO oxidation under ambient conditions.

Abstract:To improve fuel efficiency, advanced combustion engines are being designed to minimize the amount of heat wasted in the exhaust. Hence, future generations of catalysts must perform at temperatures that are 100°C lower than current exhaust-treatment catalysts. Achieving low-temperature activity, while surviving the harsh conditions encountered at high engine loads, remains a formidable challenge. In this study, we demonstrate how atomically dispersed ionic platinum (Pt2+) on ceria (CeO2), which is already thermally stable, can be activated via steam treatment (at 750°C) to simultaneously achieve the goals of low-temperature carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation activity while providing outstanding hydrothermal stability. A new type of active site is created on CeO2 in the vicinity of Pt2+, which provides the improved reactivity. These active sites are stable up to 800°C in oxidizing environments.

Abstract:The cooperative catalysis between noble metals and oxygen vacancies in reducible oxides plays an important role in many heterogeneous catalytic reactions, but definite identification of active sites remains challenging. Herein, we report an experimental identification of active sites in HCHO oxidation over TiO2-supported Pt catalysts by means of microscopic and spectroscopic techniques. Pt/TiO2–x catalysts with tunable oxygen vacancy concentrations were designed and fabricated based on hydrogen spillover. A combination of aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy allowed us to directly observe the spatial distribution of oxygen vacancies and probe its correlation with the catalytic activity. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy in combination with the online gas chromatography technique was employed to investigate the functionalities of Pt and oxygen vacancies in HCHO oxidation. Our study revealed that HCHO oxidation occurred at the Pt/TiO2–x interface via a cooperative mechanism: oxygen vacancies served as active sites for chemically absorbing HCHO molecules and the adjacent Pt site dissociatively activated O2.

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO)/CeO 2 nanocomposite supported Pt catalysts were prepared for formaldehyde (HCHO) oxidation at room temperature. The investigation showed that the addition of GO could enhance the catalytic performance of Pt supported on CeO 2 (Pt/Ce) catalyst mainly due to the functional features of GO nanosheets. The content of GO in the composite catalyst had an effect on the catalytic activity of the prepared catalysts. Formate species were the main intermediates during HCHO oxidation over GO/CeO 2 nanocomposite supported Pt catalyst investigated by in situ DRIFTS. The most active GO/CeO 2 supported Pt catalyst (Pt/Ce-2) exhibited a good stability for removal of HCHO, indicating it a potential alternative catalyst for complete decomposition of HCHO into CO 2 and H 2 O at room temperature.

Abstract:It has become a hot topic to destroy air pollutants such as formaldehyde (HCHO) using noble metal nanoparticles at ambient temperature. To reduce noble metal loading for saving cost and investigate the reaction mechanism presents two challenges for this reaction. In this study, highly efficient Pd/TiO2 catalysts were facilely synthesized with deposition–precipitation method followed by sodium borohydride (NaBH4) reduction at room temperature. XPS, H2-TPR and O2-TPD experiments were used to identify the oxygen species on the catalysts. Complete oxidation of HCHO can be achieved at ambient temperature over them even with 0.1wt% Pd loading. The Pd/TiO2 catalysts prepared by deposition–precipitation method is much more active than those prepared by impregnation method mainly due to the stronger capacity for the generation and transfer of chemisorbed oxygen. Water vapor is essential to HCHO oxidation. Hydroxyl radical (OH) from water vapor dissociation favors the adsorption and transfer of oxygen on the Pd/TiO2 catalysts, which is very important during HCHO oxidation.

Abstract:Pt/CoAl 2 O 4 /Al 2 O 3 , Pt/CoO x /Al 2 O 3 , CoAl 2 O 4 /Al 2 O 3 and CoO x /Al 2 O 3 catalysts were studied for combination CO 2 reforming and partial oxidation of CH 4 . The results indicate that Pt/CoAl 2 O 4 /Al 2 O 3 is the most effective, and XRD results indicate that Pt species are well dispersed over the Pt/CoAl 2 O 4 /Al 2 O 3 . High dispersion is related to the presence of CoAl 2 O 4 , formed during calcining at high temperature before Pt addition. In the presence of Pt, CoAl 2 O 4 in the catalyst could be reduced partially at 973 K. Based on these results, it appears that zerovalent platinum with high dispersion and zerovalent cobalt resulting from CoAl 2 O 4 reduction are responsible for high activity in the Pt/CoAl 2 O 4 /Al 2 O 3 catalyst.
Oxygen Vacancy-Governed Opposite Catalytic Performance for C3H6 and C3H8 Combustion: The Effect of the Pt Electronic Structure and Chemisorbed Oxygen Species

Abstract:Revealing the role of engineered surface oxygen vacancies in the catalytic degradation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is of importance for the development of highly efficient catalysts. However, because of various structures of VOC molecules, the role of surface oxygen vacancies in different catalytic reactions remains ambiguous. Herein, a defective Pt/TiO2-x catalyst is proposed to uncover the different catalytic mechanisms of C3H6 and C3H8 combustion via experiments and theoretical calculations. The electron transfer, originated from the oxygen vacancy, facilitates the formation of reduced Pt0 species and simultaneously interfacial chemisorbed O2, thus promoting the C3H6 combustion via efficient C═C cleavage. The reduced Pt nanoparticles facilitate the robust chemisorption of bridging dimer O22- (Pt-O-O-Ti) species. This chemisorbed oxygen inhibits the C3H8 combustion by depressing C3H8 adsorption. This work offers insights for the rational design of highly efficient catalysts for activating the C═C bond in alkene or C-H bond in alkane.
