Abstract:A fundamental understanding of the structural effects of supported metal catalysts at the molecular level is extremely important for developing high-performance catalysts that are widely used in industry, which is still a longstanding attractive but challenging topic in multidisciplinary fields. In this work, we report the strong effects of local coordination structures on the catalytic activity of subnanometric PtOx clusters over CeO2 nanowires in low-temperature CO oxidation as a probe reaction. Atoms and subnanometric clusters of Pt were deposited to form the coordination structure of PtOx on the well-defined CeO2 nanowires with mainly exposed (110) facets. The reactivity of active sites and the variation of the local coordination structures of the PtOx sites were deeply investigated with in situ spectroscopic experiments, assisted by density functional theory simulations. According to our observation, although the highly dispersed Pt sites at the subnanometric scale could provide increased accessible sites, some of the Pt sites did not show high activity for CO oxidation due to the increased surrounding oxygen that seemed to overstabilize the Pt atoms. An increased proportion of both adsorbed CO intermediates on oxidized Pt sites and the interfacial lattice oxygen of PtOx clusters tended to become inactive on samples with a high coordination number of oxygen bonded to Pt sites (CN(Pt-O)), leading to the loss of effective active sites and a decrease in the catalytic activity. A relatively small CN(Pt-O) value in the subnanometric PtOx/CeO2 NWs, which was found to be the appropriate structure for their catalytic performance, remarkably increased the activity by about 1/2 order of magnitude. We believe our investigation on the interfacial coordination structure effects of subnanometric PtOx clusters dispersed on CeO2 nanowires can provide some new basic chemical insights into the metal-support interfacial interactions of Pt/CeO2 catalysts for understanding their catalytic performance in some relevant reactions.
Facet-dependent electronic state of Pt single atoms anchoring on CeO2 nanocrystal for CO (preferential) oxidation

Abstract:Tuning the electronic state and local structure of single-atom dispersed metals is important to improve the performance of single-atom catalysts. Here, we find that the electronic structure of Pt single atoms (Pt1) depends on the facets of CeO2. Various characterizations and density functional theory calculations demonstrate that Pt1 anchored on the (110) facet of CeO2 nanorods exhibits a positively charged state, while it approaches the metallic state on the (100) facet of CeO2 nanocubes. The different Pt1 states on these facets are attributed to the Pt-O-Ce microstructures with different electron transfer patterns. The positively charged Pt1 shows much weaker adsorption of CO which is favorable for its complete oxidation at lower temperatures. In contrast, the metallic Pt1 can facilitate the activation of H2 in the form of dissociation. The activated H species on metallic Pt1 then promote the preferential oxidation of CO to a greater extent and significantly reduce the reaction barrier. This study provides important implications for tailoring the electronic structure of single-atom centers for heterogeneous catalysis by bonding to specific facet supports.

Tailoring the Local Environment of Platinum in Single-Atom Pt1 /CeO2 Catalysts for Robust Low-Temperature CO Oxidation

Abstract:A single-atom Pt1 /CeO2 catalyst formed by atom trapping (AT, 800 °C in air) shows excellent thermal stability but is inactive for CO oxidation at low temperatures owing to over-stabilization of Pt2+ in a highly symmetric square-planar Pt1 O4 coordination environment. Reductive activation to form Pt nanoparticles (NPs) results in enhanced activity; however, the NPs are easily oxidized, leading to drastic activity loss. Herein we show that tailoring the local environment of isolated Pt2+ by thermal-shock (TS) synthesis leads to a highly active and thermally stable Pt1 /CeO2 catalyst. Ultrafast shockwaves (>1200 °C) in an inert atmosphere induced surface reconstruction of CeO2 to generate Pt single atoms in an asymmetric Pt1 O4 configuration. Owing to this unique coordination, Pt1 δ+ in a partially reduced state dynamically evolves during CO oxidation, resulting in exceptional low-temperature performance. CO oxidation reactivity on the Pt1 /CeO2 _TS catalyst was retained under oxidizing conditions.

Abstract:Understanding the influence of structural configurations on catalytic performance is crucial for optimizing atom‐efficient single‐atom catalysts (SACs). In this study, we conducted a density functional theory (DFT) investigation of single Pt atoms positioned at step‐edges and within a solid solution on the CeO2(111) surface. We compared these configurations in terms of thermodynamic stability, electronic properties, and further potential energy surfaces for CO oxidation. Stability studies revealed that the solid solution catalyst exhibits greater stability compared to the step‐edge catalyst. Additionally, the Pt in the solid solution catalyst can effectively activate lattice oxygen atoms, making the catalyst more conducive to the formation of oxygen vacancies. The CO oxidation process was analyzed using the Mars‐van Krevelen mechanism, revealing that the solid solution catalyst possesses a more moderate CO adsorption energy. This, coupled with its lower oxygen vacancy formation energy, leads to reduced energy barriers throughout the CO oxidation cycle. Our findings highlight the strong dependence of catalytic activity on the specific configuration of Pt atoms within the CeO2 matrix, with the solid solution model demonstrating superior catalytic efficiency compared to the step‐edge‐supported Pt catalysts.

Theoretical Investigations of Pt-1@Ceo2 Single-Atom Catalyst for Co Oxidation

Abstract:In the present study, we perform systematic density functional investigations on the single-atom Pt catalysts dispersed on CeO2 (111), (110), and (100) surfaces. The structural and electronic properties of these SACs and their corresponding catalytic activity for CO oxidation are discussed. It is shown that the single-atom Pt substitution of a lattice Ce ion is thermodynamically stable on each ceria surface. On the (111) and (100) surfaces, the single Pt atom is found to exist at an oxidation state of +4 upon replacement of Ce4+, while, on the (110) surface, it exhibits a planar structure with a reduced oxidation state of +2 due to the spontaneous formation of surface peroxide O(2)(2-)species. On all of the surfaces, CO oxidation is found to follow the Mars-van Krevelen mechanism. It is the single-atom Pt, rather than the lattice Ce, that acts as the electron acceptor/donor in the redox processes during the whole catalytic cycle. This work provides insights on the significant role of a single metal atom on reducible oxide of ceria and others.
Reaction-driven evolutions of Pt states over Pt-CeO 2 catalysts during CO oxidation

Abstract:Pt-CeO 2 catalysts had been comprehensively investigated on the structure-performance relationships in various applications. However, reaction-driven structural dynamics are still in heavily debate. In this study, we tried to track the evolutions of Pt states during CO oxidation. It was found that the activities are not in line with Pt loading amounts; the reactivity started to sharply decrease and the "hysteresis loop" in activity would appear when Pt loading amount is more than 0.25 %. Combining the analyses of chemisorption and spectroscopy technologies, we concluded that Pt single atoms are prone to aggregate into Pt clusters while Pt nanoparticles suffer an oxidation process and gradually form a new Pt species-Pt x O y ensembles with the elevated reaction temperatures. Density functional theory calculations further revealed that the different adsorption properties of CO and O 2 on Pt species with different initial sizes are the primary causes of different evolution behaviors.

Abstract:In recent years, noble metals atomically dispersed on solid oxide supports have become a frontier of heterogeneous catalysis. In pursuit of an ultimate atom efficiency, the stability of single-atom catalysts is pivotal. Here we compare two Pd/CeO2 single-atom catalysts that are active in low-temperature CO oxidation and display drastically different structural dynamics under the reaction conditions. These catalysts were obtained by conventional impregnation on hydrothermally synthesized CeO2 and one-step flame spray pyrolysis. The oxidized Pd atoms in the impregnated catalyst were prone to reduction and sintering during CO oxidation, whereas they remained intact on the surface of the Pd-doped CeO2 derived by flame spray pyrolysis. A detailed in situ characterization linked the stability of the Pd single atoms to the reducibility of the Pd–CeO2 interface and the extent of reverse oxygen spillover. To understand the chemical phenomena that underlie the metal–support interactions is crucial to the rational design of stable single-atom catalysts.

Abstract:The catalytic activity of metals supported on oxides depends on their charge and oxidation state. Yet, the determination of the degree of charge transfer at the interface remains elusive. Here, by combining density functional theory and first-principles molecular dynamics on Pt single atoms deposited on the CeO2 (100) surface, we show that the common representation of a static metal charge is oversimplified. Instead, we identify several well-defined charge states that are dynamically interconnected and thus coexist. The origin of this new class of strong metal–support interactions is the relative position of the Ce(4f) levels with respect to those of the noble metal, allowing electron injection to (or recovery from) the support. This process is phonon-assisted, as the Ce(4f) levels adjust by surface atom displacement, and appears for other metals (Ni) and supports (TiO2). Our dynamic model explains the unique reactivity found for activated single Pt atoms on ceria able to perform CO oxidation, meeting the Department of Energy 150 °C challenge for emissions.

Abstract:The reactant-induced dynamics of catalysts under harsh conditions have a profound impact on their reactivity and stability, and identification of the underlying principle and active sites is vital for the rational design of catalysts. Based on a comprehensive first-principles investigation, we reveal here a reactant-induced dynamic stabilization of the highly dispersed Pt complexes that formed on ceria surfaces and their decisive role in CO oxidation. Compared to those of Pt nanoparticles, reactant-stabilized single-nuclear Pt1(CO) m and/or multinuclear Pt8(CO) n complexes prevail under CO-rich conditions on the defective CeO2 (111), (110), and (100) surfaces considered. At lower temperatures, the Pt1(CO) complexes emerge as active sites for CO oxidation, whereas at higher temperatures, the active sites transit dynamically to the Pt8(CO)9 complexes. We found that oxygen defects not only stabilize the complexes but also promote activity via the facile Mars–van Krevelen mechanism. These insights reveal the great impact of the reactant-interference structure–activity relationship under operando conditions.

Abstract:To improve fuel efficiency, advanced combustion engines are being designed to minimize the amount of heat wasted in the exhaust. Hence, future generations of catalysts must perform at temperatures that are 100°C lower than current exhaust-treatment catalysts. Achieving low-temperature activity, while surviving the harsh conditions encountered at high engine loads, remains a formidable challenge. In this study, we demonstrate how atomically dispersed ionic platinum (Pt2+) on ceria (CeO2), which is already thermally stable, can be activated via steam treatment (at 750°C) to simultaneously achieve the goals of low-temperature carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation activity while providing outstanding hydrothermal stability. A new type of active site is created on CeO2 in the vicinity of Pt2+, which provides the improved reactivity. These active sites are stable up to 800°C in oxidizing environments.
Structure-activity relationship of Pt catalyst on engineered ceria-alumina support for CO oxidation

Abstract:In heterogeneous catalysis, the promotion of low temperature activity and enhancement of thermal stability simultaneously especially for precious metal catalysts is always highly demanded but very challenging. Herein we report a novel Pt catalyst on ceria-alumina (CeO2/Al2O3) support (Pt/CA-T) engineered by a two-step ceria deposition strategy, exhibiting superior thermal stability and low-temperature carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation activity after activation. Pt single sites anchored to engineered CeO2 edge sites are much more stable than that to CeO2 (111) surface, and such stable single sites can be transformed into highly active Pt clusters for efficient low-temperature CO oxidation. Active site identification indicates that the CO oxidation activity of different Pt sites follows such sequence: Pt cluster step sites ≈ Pt cluster terrace sites > Pt cluster corner sites ≫ Pt single sites on CeO2. The excellent low temperature activity of activated Pt/CA-T catalyst for CO oxidation is associated with its abundant Pt cluster step and terrace sites as well as rich Pt-CeO2 interfaces, which facilitate the adsorption of active CO species and superior oxygen activation/transfer ability. The present study provides new insights into the structure–activity relationship of Pt-CeO2-Al2O3 catalyst, which can also guide the preparation of other highly robust supported catalysts for important industrial applications.

Abstract:Ceria-supported atomically dispersed Pt is of great interest in CO oxidation due to their unique catalytic performance and high metal utilization. However, the intrinsic activity of the Pt1/CeO2 single atom catalysts may not be desirable due to the overstabilization of Pt2+ species in the CeO2 matrix. Herein, the local environment of Pt2+ species was tailored by introducing a tungsten oxide additive into the Pt1/CeO2 catalyst, achieving a dramatic improvement in catalytic performance for CO oxidation at low temperatures. The optimized catalyst with 2.5 wt% W loading achieved 100 % CO conversion at 150 degrees C, which was 120 degrees C lower than that of the unmodified Pt/CeO2 catalyst. Through in situ infrared spectroscopy and temperature-programmed reduction characterizations, as well as theoretical calculations, we concluded that the tungsten additive modulated the interactions between Pt2+ species and CeO2. Thus, the reducibility of Pt was enhanced, which facilitated the formation of catalytically active metallic Pt0 species during the reaction.
Carbon-CeO2 Interface Confinement Enhances the Chemical Stability of Pt Nanocatalyst for Catalytic Oxidation Reactions

Abstract:Noble metals are downsized to nano-/subnanoscale to improve their catalytic activity and atom-economy. However, the stabilities in chemical state and catalytic performance of these nanocatalysts often suffer during harsh conditions. For Pt nanoparticles (NPs) supported on CeO2, activated oxygen diffused from the support over-stabilizes the active sites of Pt, degrading its performance at mild temperature. In this work, Pt nanocatalysts with unique structure of triple-junction are synthesized by selectively growing Pt NPs on the carbon-CeO2 interface. Impressively, the Pt NPs exhibit much enhanced catalytic stability and high activity for CO oxidation at mild temperature. The enhancement is attributed to electron donation from graphitized carbon and the confinement effect from the high-density nanopores of the CeO2 support. The triple-junction of Pt-C-CeO2, combining the merits of CeO2 for activating O2 and electron donating capability of carbon, provides new inspiration to the fabrication of high-performance nanocatalysts.
Large-Pore Mesoporous CeO2 -Zro2 Solid Solutions with In-Pore Confined Pt Nanoparticles for Enhanced CO Oxidation.

Abstract:Active and stable catalysts are highly desired for converting harmful substances (e.g., CO, NOx ) in exhaust gases of vehicles into safe gases at low exhaust temperatures. Here, a solvent evaporation-induced co-assembly process is employed to design ordered mesoporous Cex Zr1- x O2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) solid solutions by using high-molecular-weight poly(ethylene oxide)-block-polystyrene as the template. The obtained mesoporous Cex Zr1- x O2 possesses high surface area (60-100 m2 g-1 ) and large pore size (12-15 nm), enabling its great capacity in stably immobilizing Pt nanoparticles (4.0 nm) without blocking pore channels. The obtained mesoporous Pt/Ce0.8 Zr0.2 O2 catalyst exhibits superior CO oxidation activity with a very low T100 value of 130 °C (temperature of 100% CO conversion) and excellent stability due to the rich lattice oxygen vacancies in the Ce0.8 Zr0.2 O2 framework. The simulated catalytic evaluations of CO oxidation combined with various characterizations reveal that the intrinsic high surface oxygen mobility and well-interconnected pore structure of the mesoporous Pt/Ce0.8 Zr0.2 O2 catalyst are responsible for the remarkable catalytic efficiency. Additionally, compared with mesoporous Pt/Cex Zr1- x O2 -s with small pore size (3.8 nm), ordered mesoporous Pt/Cex Zr1- x O2 not only facilitates the mass diffusion of reactants and products, but also provides abundant anchoring sites for Pt nanoparticles and numerous exposed catalytically active interfaces for efficient heterogeneous catalysis.

Abstract:The synergistic relationship between platinum (Pt) and ceria support is vital for advancing the innovative design of Pt/ceria catalyst, which extensively applied in the fields of energy conversion and environmental remediation. Through thermal treatment, A serial of Pt/ceria with different metal support interaction were obtained. Advanced analyses employing in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray Photon-electron Spectroscopy (XPS) elucidated that these thermal methods provoke a marked affinity between the Pt clusters and ceria support. High-temperature treatment can result in partial encapsulation of Pt clusters by CeO2, enabling the Pt clusters to match to the CeO2 lattice. Notably, high-temperature treatments lead to the partial encapsulation of Pt clusters by CeO2, facilitating alignment of the Pt clusters with the CeO2 lattice. This results in the emergence of oxidized Pt (Pt4+), which replaces the initial metallic Pt0, embedding itself onto the ceria support and subsequently activating adjacent Ce atoms in proximity to Pt. This innovative structure creates more site for CO adsorption but with weaker adsorption energy, effectively eliminating CO poisoning on the Pt surface and enhancing O2 dissociative adsorption. Collectively, these modifications birth a catalyst exhibiting remarkable proficiency in low-temperature CO oxidation.

Abstract:Abstract Constructing single atom catalysts with fine-tuned coordination environments can be a promising strategy to achieve satisfactory catalytic performance. Herein, via a simple calcination temperature-control strategy, CeO 2 supported Pt single atom catalysts with precisely controlled coordination environments are successfully fabricated. The joint experimental and theoretical analysis reveals that the Pt single atoms on Pt 1 /CeO 2 prepared at 550 °C (Pt/CeO 2 -550) are mainly located at the edge sites of CeO 2 with a Pt–O coordination number of ca . 5, while those prepared at 800 °C (Pt/CeO 2 -800) are predominantly located at distorted Ce substitution sites on CeO 2 terrace with a Pt–O coordination number of ca . 4. Pt/CeO 2 -550 and Pt/CeO 2 -800 with different Pt 1 -CeO 2 coordination environments exhibit a reversal of activity trend in CO oxidation and NH 3 oxidation due to their different privileges in reactants activation and H 2 O desorption, suggesting that the catalytic performance of Pt single atom catalysts in different target reactions can be maximized by optimizing their local coordination structures.
