In this note, we study a transition probability on the finite words space of an iterated function system, whose invariant set is the unit interval. We present the necessary and sufficient condition for the transition probability to satisfy the Harnack inequality.

Abstract:We give a dynamical proof of a result of Masser and Zannier [MZ2, MZ3] about torsion points on the Legendre family of elliptic curves. Our methods also treat points of small height. A key ingredient is the arithmetic equidistribution theorem on $\mathbb{P}^1$ of Baker-Rumely, Chambert-Loir, and Favre-Rivera-Letelier. Torsion points on the elliptic curve coincide with preperiodic points for the degree-4 Lattes family of rational functions. Our main new results concern properties of the bifurcation measures for this Lattes family associated to marked points.

Abstract:In 1980s, Thurston established a topological characterization theorem for postcritically finite rational maps. In this paper, a decomposition theorem for a class of postcritically infinite branched covering termed Herman map is developed. It's shown that every Herman map can be decomposed along a stable multicurve into finitely many Siegel maps and Thurston maps, such that the combinations and rational realizations of these resulting maps essentially dominate the original one. This result is motivated by a non-expanding version of McMullen's problem, and Thurston's theory on characterization of rational maps. It enables us to prove a Thurston-type theorem for rational maps with Herman rings.

Abstract:For a manifold with nonpositive curvature, the Martin boundary is described by the behavior of normalized Green’s functions at infinity. A classical result by Anderson and Schoen states that if the manifold has pinched negative curvature, the geometric boundary is the same as the Martin boundary. In this paper, we study the Martin boundary of rank 1 manifolds admitting compact quotients. It is proved that a residual set in the geometric boundary can be identified naturally with a subset of the Martin boundary. This gives a partial answer to one of the open problems in geometry collected by Yau.
The tree pigeonhole principle in the Weihrauch degrees

Abstract:We study versions of the tree pigeonhole principle, $\mathsf{TT}^1$, in the context of Weihrauch-style computable analysis. The principle has previously been the subject of extensive research in reverse mathematics. Two outstanding questions from the latter investigation are whether $\mathsf{TT}^1$ is $\Pi^1_1$-conservative over the ordinary pigeonhole principle, $\mathsf{RT}^1$, and whether it is equivalent to any first-order statement of second-order arithmetic. Using the recently introduced notion of the first-order part of an instance-solution problem, we formulate, and answer in the affirmative, the analogue of the first question for Weihrauch reducibility. We then use this, in combination with other results, to answer in the negative the analogue of the second question. Our proofs develop a new combinatorial machinery for constructing and understanding solutions to instances of $\mathsf{TT}^1$.

It is usually divided into two parts, the first of which classifies functions which are not above the identity and the second of which classifies functions which are above the identity. Slaman and Steel proved the second part of the conjecture for Borel functions which are order-preserving (i.e. which preserve Turing reducibility). We prove the first part of the conjecture for all order-preserving functions. We do this by introducing a class of functions on the Turing degrees which we call "measure-preserving" and proving that part 1 of Martin's Conjecture holds for all measure-preserving functions and also that all non-trivial order-preserving functions are measure-preserving. Our result on measure-preserving functions has several other consequences for Martin's Conjecture, including an equivalence between part 1 of the conjecture and a statement about the structure of the Rudin-Keisler order on ultrafilters on the Turing degrees.

Abstract:The KKM theorem, due to Knaster, Kuratowski, and Mazurkiewicz in 1929, is a fundamental result in fixed-point theory, which has seen numerous extensions and applications. In this paper we survey old and recent generalizations of the KKM theorem and their applications in the areas of piercing numbers, mass partition, fair division, and matching theory. Abstract:We give a linking theorem that strengthens and unifies some many minimax theorems including Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz ``mountain pass theorem'', Rabinowitz ``multidimensional mountain pass theorem'', Rabinowitz ``saddle point theorem'' and Silva's variants of these results. We focus our attention especially on ``the limiting case'', known to be true for the mountain pass principle, where some information on the location of the critical points is given. Two forms of this theorem are given: the first one is established via a deformation lemma and we use Ekeland's variational principle to get the second one.

Abstract:We investigate two conjectured spectral graph theoretic strengthenings of Turán's theorem. Let $\mu_1 \ge \ldots \ge \mu_n$ denote the eigenvalues of a graph $G$ with $n$ vertices, $m$ edges and clique number $\omega(G)$. The concise version of Turán's theorem is that $n/(n - d)$ is a lower bound for the clique number $\omega(G)$, where $d$ is the average degree. Our first conjecture is that $d$ can be replaced in this bound with $\sqrt{s^+}$, where $s^+$ is the sum of the squares of the positive eigenvalues. We prove this conjecture for triangle-free, weakly perfect and Kneser graphs and for almost all graphs. We have also used various software tools to search for a counter-example. Nikiforov proved a spectral version of Turán's theorem that \[ \mu_1^2 \le \frac{2m(\omega(G) - 1)}{\omega(G)}, \] and Bollobás and Nikiforov conjectured that for $G \not = K_n$ \[ \mu_1^2 + \mu_2^2 \le \frac{2m(\omega(G) - 1)}{\omega(G)}. \] For our second conjecture, we propose that for all graphs $(\mu_1^2 + \mu_2^2)$ in this inequality can be replaced by the sum of the squares of the $\omega(G)$ largest eigenvalues, provided they are positive. We prove the conjecture for weakly perfect, Kneser, and classes of strongly regular graphs. We also provide experimental evidence and describe how the bound can be applied. Liu and Ning published a wide-ranging paper entitled ``Unsolved Problems in spectral graph theory'', and these two conjectures were placed second and fourth in their list of such problems.

The proof is novel in using the idea of colorings applied to regular polygons to establish a number-theo retic result. Applying this method, we prove that Martin's axiom is strictly stronger than its restriction to forcing notions satisfying the countable chain condition in all finite powers. Abstract:We investigate the generalized tree properties and guessing model properties introduced by Weiß and Viale, as well as natural weakenings thereof, studying the relationships among these properties and between these properties and other prominent combinatorial principles. We introduce a weakening of Viale and Weiß's Guessing Model Property, which we call the Almost Guessing Property, and prove that it provides an alternate formulation of the slender tree property in the same way that the Guessing Model Property provides and alternate formulation of the ineffable slender tree property. We show that instances of the Almost Guessing Property have sufficient strength to imply, for example, failures of square or the nonexistence of weak Kurepa trees. We show that these instances of the Almsot Guessing Property hold in the Mitchell model starting from a strongly compact cardinal and prove a number of other consistency results showing that certain implications between the principles under consideration are in general not reversible. In the process, we provide a new answer to a question of Viale by constructing a model in which, for all regular $\theta \geq \omega_2$, there are stationarily many $\omega_2$-guessing models $M \in \mathscr{P}_{\omega_2} H(\theta)$ that are not $\omega_1$-guessing models.
