Abstract:The effect of high-energy electropulsing treatment (EPT) on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti-6Al-4V alloy strip with initial lamellar microstructure was investigated. The results indicated that EPT accelerated the phase change process tremendously inducing equiaxed microstructure in titanium alloy. The EPT-induced microstructural change resulted in remarkably increasing elongation-to-failure while the tensile strength remained unchanged. A mechanism for rapid phase change in low temperature during EPT was proposed based on the reduction of nucleation thermodynamic barrier and enhancement of atomic diffusion. Abstract:Mechanical properties, for example the elastic modulus, yield stress and ultimate tensile stress, of the rapidly solidified (RS) AI-Ti alloy after thermal exposure have been investigated using an Instron tensile test machine at a strain rate of 1.5 x 10(-4) s(-1). The results show that the elastic modulus of the Al-Ti alloy increases with increasing Ti concentration, which can be predicted with Halpin-Tsai equation, Eshelby method and hereby re-modified shear lag model; the yield strength and the ultimate tensile stress increase with increasing volume fraction and decreasing particle size of the Al3Ti and fine grain strengthening is suggested to be the main operative strengthening mechanism.

Abstract:The effect of high‐energy electropulsing treatment (EPT) on the phase transition and mechanical properties of the two‐phase Ti–6Al–4V alloy strips (in the solid solution state) was studied with the help of uniaxial tensile machine, X‐ray diffraction, optical stereo‐microscope, scanning electron microscope, and electrical resistance meters. Results show that the ductility of the titanium alloy strips under EPT could be enhanced remarkably at most by 225% while keeping the tensile strength nearly unchanged. EPT facilitates β‐Ti phase precipitation noticeably with increasing percentage of the β phase and the average size of the β phase. In addition, precipitated β phase gathers coarsening, forms into continuous strips and migrates from the interior grains to the inter‐granular regions transforming the wormlike microstructure into the equiaxed microstructure. The mechanism for rapid phase change during EPT is put forward with increasing the nucleation rate of the α → β phase transformation and accelerating the diffusion flux of vanadium atoms under the coupling of the thermal and athermal effects. Therefore, a highly efficient aging treatment method for titanium alloys is provided to prepare advanced engineering materials with outstanding mechanical properties, which can be widely applied in the aerospace and biomedical fields.

Abstract:The effect of electro-pulsing treatment (EPT) on the microstructure, mechanical properties and corrosion behavior of cold-rolled Ti-6Al-4V alloy strips was investigated in this paper. It was found that the elongation to failure of materials obtains a noticeable enhancement with increased EPT processing time while slightly sacrificing strength. Fine recrystallized grains and the relative highest elongation to failure (32.5%) appear in the 11 second-EPT samples. Grain coarsening and decreased ductility were brought in with longer EPT duration time. Fracture surface analysis shows that transition from intergranular brittle facture to transgranular dimple fracture takes place with an increase in processing time of EPT. Meanwhile, corrosion behavior of titanium alloys is greatly improved with increased EPT processing time, which is presented by polarization test and surface observation with the beneficial effect of forming a protective anatase-TiO2 film on the surface of alloys. The rapid recrystallization behavior and oxide formation of the titanium alloy strip under EPTs are attributed to the enhancement of nucleation rate, atomic diffusion and oxygen migration resulting from the coupling of the thermal and athermal effects. Abstract:The effect of high-density electropulsing treatment (EPT) on the microstructure, mechanical properties and fracture behavior of cold-rolled Ti-6Al-4V alloy strip was investigated. In addition, anisotropy behavior of mechanical property is weakened dramatically. Uneven fractures of different direction specimens with quasi-cleavage fracture mode were gradually evolved into uniform ductile fracture mode with transgranular dimples under EPT.

Materials Characterization

Abstract:This research represents an exploratory characterization of titanium alloy strips under electroplastic rolling process compared with cold-rolling process. The formability, mechanical property and microstructure evolution of the titanium alloy strips under these two rolling processes are conducted in the research. Results show that the shaping quality of electroplastic rolled samples is better than that of cold-rolled samples without obvious deformed defects accompanying by lower resistance of deformability (the reduction can reach 31.25%). The final electroplastic rolled products obtain better comprehensive mechanical property with at most 248.5% increment of ductility while sacrificing little strength. In the low-frequency process, dynamic recovery and dynamic recrystallization appear with decreasing average size of grains and increasing volume fraction of recrystallized grains. In the high-frequency process, grain coarsening and uneven growth are both present The evolution of texture (including basal texture and < 10 (1) over bar0 > crystal orientation) and misorientation angle distribution explain the materials' ductility change. Fracture observation also demonstrates this change with transitional fracture modes. The mechanism of rapid dynamic reaystallization and abnormal grain growth under hybrid effects of high-energy electropulses effect and deformation energy is discussed. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. In-situ Investigation Via High Energy X-ray Diffraction of Stress-Induced(0002)α→(110)β Transformation in a Ti-5.5Mo-7.2Al-4.5Zr-2.6Sn-2.1Cr Alloy

Abstract:The deformation and load partitioning mechanisms among phases are critical to the detailed understanding of heterogeneous stress distributions at the submicron scale during the process of elastic-plastic transformation in dual-phase (α+β) titanium alloys. Therefore, in this work, a Ti-5.5Mo-7.2Al-4.5Zr-2.6Sn-2.1Cr titanium alloy was investigated via in-situ high energy X-ray diffraction. We examined the evolution of the lattice strain, peak intensity, and full width at half maximum under uniaxial tensile loading at room temperature. The results indicated that the stress-induced (0002)α→(110)β transformation can be preferentially initiated for lattice strains of 702 × 10−6–1500 × 10−6 and 592 × 10−6–1355 × 10−6 during the elastic loading stage of the {0002}α and {110}β reflections, respectively. In addition, various dog-bone-shaped specimens with interrupted strain amplitudes (0.3%, 3%, 5% and 8.5%) were characterized via transmission electron microscopy. The corresponding selected area electron diffraction pattern confirmed the occurrence of a (0002)α//(110)β Burgers orientation relationship when the alloy was subjected to a strain of ε = 0.3%. Furthermore, the results revealed that the anisotropic non-linear response of specific reflections (i.e., the (0002)α and (110)β reflections) will cause a phase transformation.

Abstract:Microstructure, mechanical properties, electrical resistivity and temperature evolution of functionally graded Ti-6Al-4V alloy strips were processed under the electro-pulsing treatment (EPT) for 16 s and further studied by optical microscope, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity measurement, mechanical testing and consecutive temperature testing. Six kinds of microstructures were obtained on the single functional graded material (FGM) by different EPT parameters. The temperature evolution of each processing parameter was measured timely to be found low and different as a proof of the coupling of thermal and athermal effect in the FGM-EPT procedure. With increasing the frequency, the volume of beta phase increased gradually in general and re-dissolution both occurred. The ductility for sectional samples of FGM was enhanced to the maximum value, elongation to failure 27.8%, without compromising too much ultimate tensile strength and relevant tensile fracture behaviors were changed. The mechanism of microstructure change was discussed by the coupling of the thermal and athermal effect of EPT to decrease the thermodynamic barrier and influence the dislocations and atoms motion. Abstract:Commercially pure titanium strips were successfully processed by electropulsing treatment (EPT) at relatively low temperature compared to the traditional heat treatment. The results indicated that the ductility of titanium materials is dramatically improved by electropulse while remaining uniaxial tensile strength unchanged, with the increased volume fraction of fine recrystallized grains through electron back-scattered diffraction analysis. However, too high-frequency EPT brought in the coarsened grains and worsened mechanical properties. A mechanism for rapid recrystallization and grain growth in low temperature during EPT was proposed based on the reduction of nucleation thermodynamic barrier and enhancement of atomic diffusion. It is supposed that high-efficiency EPT could provide a highly efficient method for the intermediate-softening annealing of titanium sheet/strips within well-designed process. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Effects of electropulsing treatment (EPT) on the microstructure evolution, mechanical properties and crack healing of intermetallic Al3Ti alloys were studied in this work. In order to investigate the athermal effect caused by EPT, conventional heat treatment (CHT) was conducted for comparison. The compressive stress-strain curves demonstrated that the failure strains of Al3Ti alloy increase under both the EPT and CHT conditions, while the increment of failure strain of Al3Ti alloy treated by EPT is higher than that treated by CHT. Fracture surface analysis confirmed that the intrinsic brittle fracture of Al3Ti alloy evolves into the quasi-cleavage fracture with increasing frequency of EPT. Based on the systematic investigation into the microstructure evolution, mechanical properties and fracture surface observation, the influence mechanism of EPT on Al3Ti alloy was found to be related to the improvements of atomic diffusion and dislocation movement, which results from the coupling of thermal effect and athermal effect by EPT. Furthermore, the thermal compressive stress and athermal effect could heal the local micro-crack and decrease the crack width of Al3Ti alloy by EPT. Therefore, EPT can work as a novel method for improving the plastic deformation capacity of Al3Ti alloy.
Thermal stability and its effects on the mechanical properties of rapidly solidified Al-Ti alloys

Abstract:Microstructure and mechanical properties of the rapidly solidified (RS) Al-Ti alloy after thermal exposure treatment have been investigated. It is revealed that the Al3Ti particle, which disperses homogeneously within the Al matrix, is coarsened via a volume diffusion controlled growth mechanism described by the LSW equation. The coarsening rate increases with increasing volume fraction of the particle. The Young’s modulus of the Al-Ti alloy increases with increasing particle volume fraction, which can be predicted by the Halpin–Tsai equation and the Eshelby method. The modified shear lag model used to estimate Young’s modulus of the particulate reinforced composite is hereby re-modified to give a more precise evaluation. The yield strength of the RS Al-Ti alloy is found to increase with increasing volume fraction and decreasing particle size of the reinforcement. It is indicated that the continuum strengthening mechanism (the modified shear lag model and the Eshelby model) fails to explain the increased yield strength. Therefore, strengthening mechanisms based on dislocation movement have been taken into account. Considering microstructure changes in the matrix due to the presence of the reinforcement, the Eshelby type model is believed to give the yield strength of the RS Al-Ti alloy quite accurately.

Abstract:The effect of electropulsing ultrasonic shock (EUS) on the microhardness and microstructure of Ti6Al4V alloy was studied. It was found that electropulsing improved the microhardness dramatically, compared with the only ultrasonic-shocked sample. It is indicated that refined surface layer were obtained on account of dynamic recrystallization (DRX) and phase change, which was implemented at low temperature and high strain rate/capacity due to the coupling of the thermal and athermal effects of EUS. Effect of Electropulsing Treatment on the Microstructure and Superelasticity of TiNi Alloy

Abstract:Cold-rolled TiNi alloy was treated by electropulsing with different process parameters. The superelasticity, electrical resistivity and microstructure evolution of the TiNi alloy were investigated. The recrystallization is found to happen in the cold-rolled TiNi alloys during electropulsing treatment (EPT) processing and it took 9 s to complete the crystallization in the EPT process. In addition, the grain size increases with the charge voltage and the discharge frequency of the electropulse. The maximum superelasticity of 6.94 % is gained when the TiNi alloy is treated by the electropulsing with the frequency of 300 Hz. The short recrystallization time of the alloy is attributed to the acceleration of atomic diffusion and the movement velocity of the grain boundary by electropulsing. This research provides an in-depth understanding of how the electropulsing affects the microstructure and superelasticity of TiNi alloy.

Abstract:The tensile properties and fracture mechanisms of fully lamellar TiAl based alloy was studied by room and high temperature (400 degrees C) tensile test. The results indicated that: the crack initiated between weak lamellar interfaces. With tension increased, the cracks extended along lamellar direction. Crack propagation resistance was enhanced at colony boundary. Ligaments broke while load increased, and then the main crack and microcrack linked. The fracture process was that the main crack occurred firstly, microcrack appeared and then propagated, the main crack and microcrack were linked, and the alloy fractured finally; The ductility of the alloy at 400 degrees C was superior to that at room temperature; The fracture mechanism of the fully lamellar TiAl based alloy is brittle cleavage fracture.
