Abstract:A debate has emerged in the recent literature about the way underlying economic structure within a geographic unit may influence the diffusion of knowledge spillovers, and promote industrial development and growth overtime. Based on the panel data of the 25 industry sectors of the 30 provinces and cities (excluding Tibet) in China from 1999 to 2003, this paper provides empirical evidence on the relation between the local economic structure and industry development. The econometric analysis shows that clear evidence on the presence of MAR externality and Jacobs externality can neither be found in the three regions, namely, eastern region, central region and western region, nor across the country; however, clear Porter externality does exist in the eastern region and all over the country. Moreover, we also find that exogenous technology spillover has positive influence on the regional industry development and that geographic factors play an important rile in the development of industry.
