Abstract:By using the 2002-2016 dataset of COSMIC, CHAMP and GRACE radio occultation (RO) and TIMED/TIDI, we investigate the morphology of global sporadic E (E-s) layers and its relation with wind shear. The occurrence rate of E-s layers depends on temporal and spatial variation. The occurrence rate of E-s layers has a maximum at around 103 km in middle latitude regions in summer hemisphere. The results show that the global distribution of E-s layers is relatively consistent with the wind shear distribution. The height-local time distribution of E-s layers occurrences are primary modulated by diurnal and semidiurnal atmospheric tides. However, the distribution of E-s layers occurrence rate cannot be explained completely according to the wind shear theory, especially at equatorial and auroral regions. More observations are required to further investigate the formation of E-s layers and its relation with wind shear. (C) 2018 COSPAR. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Current Sheets from Ulysses Observation

Abstract:Current sheet is a significant source of solar wind MHD turbulence intermittency. It has long been recognized that these structures can arise from non-linear interactions of MHD turbulence. Alternatively, they may also be relic structures in the solar wind that have a solar origin, e.g., magnetic walls of flux tubes that separate solar wind plasma into distinct parcels. Identifying these structures in the solar wind is crucial to understanding the properties of the solar wind MHD turbulence. Using Ulysses observations we examine 3-year worth of solar wind magnetic field data when the Ulysses is at low latitude during solar minimum. Extending the previous work of Li (2007, 2008), we develop an automatic data analysis method of current sheet identification. Using this method, we identify more than 28000 current sheets. Various properties of the current sheet are obtained. These include the distributions of the deflection angle across the current sheet, the thickness of the current sheet and the waiting time statistics between current sheets.

Abstract:During sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) events, significant modifications occur, not only in the neutral atmosphere, but also in the ionosphere. Specifically, sporadic E layers in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere regions significantly disrupt satellite communication. Although research has frequently focused on ionospheric alterations during SSW events, detailed studies on sporadic E layers remain limited. Examining these variations during SSW events could enhance our understanding of the interaction mechanisms between the ionosphere and the neutral atmosphere, and provide insights into the patterns of sporadic E layer alterations. This study analyzed the behavior of sporadic E layers during the 2008/2009 winter SSW period using data from three Japanese stations and satellite observations. The principal findings included the following: (1) The enhancement in the critical frequency of the sporadic E layers was most notable following the transition from easterly to westerly winds at 60° N at a 10 hPa altitude, accompanied by quasi 6-day and quasi 16-day oscillations in frequency. (2) The daily average zonal and meridional wind speeds in the MLT region also exhibited quasi 6-day and quasi 16-day oscillations, aligning with the observed periodicities in the critical frequency of the sporadic E layers. (3) Planetary waves were shown to modulate the amplitude of diurnal and semidiurnal tides, influencing the sporadic E layers. Furthermore, a wavelet analysis of foEs data with a time resolution of 0.25 h demonstrated that planetary waves also modulate the frequency of diurnal tides, thereby affecting the sporadic E layers. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of the formation mechanisms and prediction of sporadic E layer behavior.

Distinct Scaling Regimes of Energy Release Dynamics in the Nighttime Magnetosphere

Abstract:Based on a spatiotemporal analysis of POLAR UVI images, we show that the auroral emission events that initiate equatorward of the isotropic boundary (IB) obtained from a time-dependent empirical model, have systematically steeper power-law slopes of energy, power, area and lifetime probability distributions compared to the events that initiate poleward of the IB. The low-latitude group of events contains a distinct subpopulation of substorm-scale disturbances violating the power-law behavior, while the high latitude group is described by nearly perfect power-law statistics over the entire range of scales studied. The results obtained indicate that the inner and outer portions of the plasma sheet are characterized by substantially different scaling regimes of bursty energy dissipation suggestive of different physics in these regions.

Abstract:Abstract Magnetic reconnection is a fundamental physical process converting magnetic energy into not only plasma energy but also particle energy in various astrophysical phenomena. In this Letter, we show a unique data set of a solar flare where various plasmoids were formed by a continually stretched current sheet. Extreme ultraviolet images captured reconnection inflows, outflows, and particularly the recurring plasma blobs (plasmoids). X-ray images reveal nonthermal emission sources at the lower end of the current sheet, presumably as large plasmoids with a sufficiently amount of energetic electrons trapped in them. In the radio domain, an upward, slowly drifting pulsation structure, followed by a rare pair of oppositely drifting structures, was observed. These structures are supposed to map the evolution of the primary and the secondary plasmoids formed in the current sheet. Our results on plasmoids at different locations and scales shed important light on the dynamics, plasma heating, particle acceleration, and transport processes in the turbulent current sheet and provide observational evidence for the cascading magnetic reconnection process.

The Possible Role of Turbopause on Sporadic-E Layer Formation at Middle and Low Latitudes

Abstract:In this paper, we examine the mechanism of middle- and low-latitude sporadic-E (Es) layer formation. Observations of ionosondes and meteor radars at stations of different latitudes show that Es layer also formed at low-altitude nonwindshear points, which is distinct from prototypical windshear theory. The theoretical modeling results show that metallic ions can effectively accumulate by the combined effect of the zonal and meridional winds in the mesosphere and the lower thermosphere region. Numerical simulation results also demonstrate that metallic ions can accumulate without wind shear at lower height (90-105 km) as a consequence of the MLT winds leading to the ion drifting downward. We suggest that the turbopause at 90-105 km plays an important role in forming low-altitude Es layer in the middle- and low-latitude regions.

Abstract:This study investigates the variations of middle and low latitude sporadic-E (Es) layers in response to a geomagnetic storm. Es layers are observed by five ionosondes located in the Eastern Asian sector. The critical frequencies of Es layers (foEs) at six stations increased in sequence from high latitude stations to low latitude stations after IMF/Bz turning southward. Lomb–Scargle analysis shows the amplification of semidiurnal oscillation amplitude in the vertical height of Es layers during geomagnetic disturbance. Modeling results of the NCAR Thermosphere-Ionosphere-Electrodynamics General Circulation Model (TIEGCM) show the enhancement of the wind field in the mesosphere and the lower thermosphere (MLT) region. Our study provides evidence that the enhanced wind field in the MLT region during the storm period could result in the enhancement of Es layers at middle and low latitude.

Thin Current Sheet in the Substorm Late Growth Phase: Modeling of THEMIS Observations

Abstract:The structure of a thin current sheet prior to the expansion onset of a substorm event that occurred on 26 February 2008 is studied in the near‐Earth magnetotail on the basis of Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions During Substorms (THEMIS) observations. During this time interval, the ion distribution showed mushroom‐shaped structures with clear nongyrotropic features, indicating that the warmer component of the ions was unmagnetized, which becomes possible only if the gyroradii of these ions are comparable with the current sheet thickness. By comparing the observations with the model proposed by Sitnov et al. (2003), which is a modification of the Harris (1962) model by considering the effect of the meandering ions in thin current sheets, we reconstruct the current sheet structure in the late growth phase of the substorm. Warmer ions, mostly following meandering orbits across the neutral sheet, are found to remarkably alter the current sheet profiles and therefore play an important role in the formation of the thin current sheet.

Abstract:Multipoint satellite observations indicate the development of thin current sheets and an impulsive intensification of the cross-tail current density in the growth phase at near-earth distances during a short interval (<1 min) just before onset, after a period of sluggish growth (∼0.5–1.5 h). These multiple time scales are accounted for by analysis and two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulation of the magnetotail in the high-Lundquist number regime, including the earth’s dipole field. In the slow growth phase, a thin current sheet develops spanning Y points that stretch from the midtail region (∼30RE) to the near-earth region (∼10RE). This is followed by an impulsive enhancement in the current sheet amplitude due to flux pileup, consistent with observations. The stretched magnetotail with an embedded thin current sheet is found to be unstable to an ideal compressible ballooning instability with rapid spatial variation in the dawn–dusk direction. The linear instability is demonstrated by numerical solutions of the ideal ballooning eigenmode equation for a sequence of two-dimensional magnetotail configurations containing a thin current sheet, realized during the impulsive growth phase. Line-tied boundary conditions are imposed at the ionosphere, and shown to have a strong influence on the linear stability of ballooning modes at near-earth distances. It is suggested that the ideal ballooning instability provides a possible mechanism for disrupting the cross-tail current at substorm onset.
