On the Low-Latitude Ionospheric Irregularities under Geomagnetically Active and Quiet Conditions using NavIC observables: A Spectral Analysis Approach

Abstract:Ionospheric irregularities and associated scintillations under geomagnetically active/quiet conditions have detrimental effects on the reliability and performance of space- and ground-based navigation satellite systems, especially over the low-latitude region. The current work investigates the low-latitude ionospheric irregularities using the phase screen theory and the corresponding temporal Power Spectral Density (PSD) analysis to present an estimate of the outer irregularity scale sizes over these locations. The study uses simultaneous L5 signal C/N$_o$ observations of NavIC (a set of GEO and GSO navigation satellite systems) near the northern crest of EIA (Indore: 22.52$^\circ$N, 75.92$^\circ$E, dip: 32.23$^\circ$N) and in between the crest and the dip equator (Hyderabad: 17.42$^\circ$N, 78.55$^\circ$E, dip: 21.69$^\circ$N). The study period (2017-2018) covers disturbed and quiet-time conditions in the declining phase of the solar cycle 24. The PSD analysis brings forward the presence of irregularities, of the order of a few hundred meters during weak-to-moderate and quiet-time conditions and up to a few km during the strong event, over both locations. The ROTI values validate the presence of such structures in the Indian region. Furthermore, only for the strong event, a time delay of scintillation occurrence over Indore, with values of 36 minutes and 50 minutes for NavIC satellites (PRNs) 5 and 6, respectively, from scintillation occurrence at Hyderabad is observed, suggesting a poleward evolution of irregularity structures. Further observations show a westward propagation of these structures on this day. This study brings forward the advantage of utilizing continuous data from the GEO and GSO satellite systems in understanding the evolution and propagation of the ionospheric irregularities over the low-latitude region.

Abstract:The occurrence characteristics of Equatorial F-region Irregularities (EFIs) along the Indian longitude sector are investigated using GPS-derived ROTI observations from 2010 to 2023, under both quiet and disturbed geomagnetic conditions. The analysis of the results emphasizes a strong dependence of EFIs occurrence on solar cycle variation. Additionally, the EFIs are more intense at the EIA regions under maximum solar activity periods attributed to the high ambient electron density in the F-layer. The occurrence of EFIs is found to be severe and frequently observed in equinox seasons in contrast to solstice seasons. Also, the occurrence of EFIs exhibits equinoctial asymmetry with more intense EFIs in the spring equinox than autumn equinox during the peak and declining periods of the solar cycle. Conversely, severe EFIs are observed during autumn equinox than spring equinox in the ascending phase of the solar cycle. The seasonal occurrence probability of EFIs is highest in the equinox seasons, following the winter solstice, and summer solstice in high solar activity conditions. Investigations of EFIs during two prominent geomagnetic storm events (17 March 2015 and 08 September 2017) during the study period show that the storm-induced Prompt Penetration Electric Fields (PPEFs) modulated the regular intensity of dusk time Pre-Reversal Enhancement (PRE), resulting in poleward expansion of ionospheric irregularities up to mid-latitude regions with spatial time lag. However, storm-induced westward electric fields and oscillating IMF Bz created Counter Electrojet (CEJ) like conditions, suppressing the dusk time ionospheric irregularities over dip equatorial and low-latitude regions on 17 March 2013. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of how ionospheric irregularities manifest under varying conditions, thereby supporting further research on substantiating the spatiotemporal EFIs characteristics and their predictions over the region.

Occurrence and Variations of Middle and Low Latitude Sporadic E Layer Investigated with Longitudinal and Latitudinal Chains of Ionosondes

Abstract:A longitudinal chain and a latitudinal chain of ionosondes, located at Yakutsk (129.60°E, 62.00°N), Mohe (122.37°E, 53.50°N), Beijing (116.25°E, 40.25°N), Wuhan (114.61°E, 30.53°N), Sanya (109.42°E, 18.34°N), I‐Cheon (127.54°E, 37.14°N), San Vito (17.80°E, 40.60°N), Roquest (0.50°E, 40.80°N), Millstone Hill (71.50°W, 42.60°N), and Alpena (83.56°W, 45.07°N) ionosondes, are utilized to statistically investigate the sporadic E layer (Es) occurrence rate and variation. The Es occurrence rates at all stations show a similar dependence on local time and season. However, the seasonal dependence of Es occurrence is more distinct at middle latitudes than that at low latitudes along the 120°E longitude. Results at different stations along ∼40°N latitude show much lower Es occurrence at the American sector than that at European and East Asian sectors, which is most likely because the horizontal geomagnetic field in north America is smaller than in other regions. The statistical results demonstrate that the seasonal variations of Es occurrence and strength are related to the annual variation of meteor counts. Simulation results show that the summer maximum of the ion vertical drift velocity driven by the variations of neutral densities and winds could also contribute to the seasonal variations of Es occurrence and intensity. The seasonal variations of the quasi‐6‐day and quasi‐16‐day oscillations in Es are also investigated. The seasonal variations of periodic disturbances of the Es differ between each station. Planetary waves in the MLT region cannot fully explain the seasonal variations of the periodic disturbance of Es. Solar and geomagnetic activities can also result in periodic variations of the Es.

Abstract:The Sporadic E layer or Es is an ionospheric phenomenon characterized by enhancements in electron density within 90–120 km above the Earth's surface. Based on the wind shear theory, the formation of Es layers is associated with vertical shears in the horizontal wind, in the presence of the Earth's magnetic field. This study explores the role of planetary waves on inducing these vertical shears and subsequently shaping Es layers. Our investigations benefit from a large amount of data facilitated by the FORMOSAT‐7/COSMIC2 and Spire missions, which offer extensive global coverage. A wave analysis is applied to the Es intensity as represented by the S4 index derived from radio occultation measurements, in search of potential planetary wave signatures. Additionally, measurements from Aura/MLS are used to analyze corresponding spectra for the geopotential height, enabling a comparative examination of planetary wave signatures in the Es layer and geopotential height variations. The findings reveal westward and eastward wave components with specific wavenumbers and periods, suggesting the involvement of westward propagating quasi 6‐day, quasi 4‐day planetary waves, and eastward propagating Kelvin waves with a period of around 3 days in Es layer formation at low latitudes.

Abstract:By using the 2002-2016 dataset of COSMIC, CHAMP and GRACE radio occultation (RO) and TIMED/TIDI, we investigate the morphology of global sporadic E (E-s) layers and its relation with wind shear. The occurrence rate of E-s layers depends on temporal and spatial variation. The occurrence rate of E-s layers has a maximum at around 103 km in middle latitude regions in summer hemisphere. The results show that the global distribution of E-s layers is relatively consistent with the wind shear distribution. The height-local time distribution of E-s layers occurrences are primary modulated by diurnal and semidiurnal atmospheric tides. However, the distribution of E-s layers occurrence rate cannot be explained completely according to the wind shear theory, especially at equatorial and auroral regions. Abstract:A statistical analysis of sporadic E layer recorded from September 2011 to September 2015 at four Chinese ionospheric sounding stations of Mohe (122.37 degrees E, 53.50 degrees N), Beijing (116.25 degrees E, 40.25 degrees N), Wuhan (114.61 degrees E, 30.53 degrees N), and Hainan (109.13 degrees E, 19.52 degrees N) is presented to investigate the characteristics of sporadic E layer at the middle latitudes over China. The occurrence of the sporadic E layer in midlatitude China region shows strong dependence on local time and season, consistent with previous studies. The occurrence of the midlatitude sporadic E layer is prominent at local daytime in summer season. The results also reveal that the postsunset sporadic E layer is statistically pronounced in midlatitude China region, possibly related to the nighttime midlatitude E region irregularities. The midlatitude sporadic E layer is modulated by atmospheric tidal waves and planetary waves at different latitudes. The occurrence of the midlatitude sporadic E layer also tends to increase with the level of geomagnetic activity on the basis of both the statistical analysis and case study.
Wind Shear Driven Double Layer Structures of E‐Region Irregularities at Low Latitudes

Abstract:Previous theoretical simulations showed the generation of double‐layer structures of E‐region field‐aligned irregularities (FAIs). In this study, we report the double‐layer structures of E‐region FAIs observed by an all‐sky radar at low latitude Ledong (18.4°N, 109°E), China. These FAIs appeared at the altitudes ∼90 and 110 km respectively. Both layers displayed quasi‐periodic patterns with synchronized spatial features, that is, being manifested as spatially separated patches or wavelike structures over similar longitudes at the two layers simultaneously. The neutral wind observations revealed the existence of wind shears at two separated altitudes where the double FAI layers occurred. The two wind shears created two vertically separated sporadic E layers and possibly drove the generation of the double‐layer FAIs via gradient drift instability. The synchronized spatial features of the FAIs at the two layers could be modulated by gravity waves.

Abstract:By using the 2015-2016 data set of newly built Wuhan very high-frequency (VHF) radar, we investigate the occurrence of E-region field-aligned irregularities (FAIs) in mid-latitude China region for the first time. Wuhan E-region FAIs present the strongest occurrence of quasi-periodic (QP) echoes at postsunset period in the height range of 100-120 km and moderate occurrence of continuous echoes at postsunrise period in the height range of 90-100 km. Characteristics including temporal and altitudinal distribution, Doppler spectra and period of QP echoes are presented from a statistical point of view. We find that E-region FAIs observed by Wuhan VHF radar show strong linkage with the concurrent sporadic E layer observed by ionosonde. In general, Doppler spectra present type 2 feature with velocity in the range of +/- 50 m/s and width less than 50 m/s. Our results also indicate that mid-latitude E-region FAIs are closely associated with Es layer. Several mechanisms were proposed to interpret the mid-latitude E-region FAIs; however, further investigation is required to understand the generation with different ionospheric background and irregularity types.

Abstract:In the present work, disturbances of the half-transparency frequency fbEs of the ionospheric sporadic E-layer are investigated in connection with earthquakes. The fbEs-frequency is proportional to the square root of the maximum ionisation density of the sporadic E-layer. In this work, it is shown that in 2/3 of the cases, two days before a seismic shock with magnitude M > 5.5 and on the day of the shock, an increase of the fbEs-frequency is obtained at sunset hours at distances from the epicenter R km. In contrast, before sunrise, the fbEs-value decreases. The data analysed are obtained by the three vertical ionospheric sounding stations“Kokubunji”, “Yamagawa”, and “Wakkanai” during some tens of years.

Abstract:In the present work, disturbances of the fbEs-frequency of the sporadic E-layer of the ionosphere are investigated in connection with earthquakes. The fbEs-frequency is proportional to the square root of the maximum ionisation density of the sporadic E-layer. In this work, it is shown that two days before a seismic shock with magnitude M>5.5, and during the shock, an increase of the fbEs-frequency is obtained around midnight at distances from the epicentre R<expM+100 km in the case that the focus of the shock was situated at depths smaller than 60km. Data obtained by the three ionospheric sounding stations “Kokubunji”, “Akita” and “Yamagawa” are analysed, which were recorded during a total time of 42years. The superimposed epoches method is applied for a few tens of earthquakes.
Latitudinal Dependence of the Geomagnetic and Solar Activity Effect on Sporadic-E layer

Abstract:Abstract. Based on the global COSMIC occultation data, the latitudinal dependence of the geomagnetic and solar activity effect on the sporadic-E (Es) layer is investigated. Statistical results demonstrate that the relationship between Es layer occurrence rate and geomagnetic activity shows no correlation in low geomagnetic latitudes, a negative correlation in middle geomagnetic latitudes, and a positive correlation in high geomagnetic latitudes. The decrease in Es layer occurrence rate during geomagnetic activity in middle geomagnetic latitudes may be due to the descending meteor rate caused by the atmospheric density change during the geomagnetic storm. While the increase in Es layer occurrence rate in high geomagnetic latitudes is mostly related to the ionospheric electric field change driven by the international magnetic field (IMF) embedded within the solar wind. Solar activity effect on the Es layer also presents latitudinal dependence, with negative correlation in low and middle geomagnetic latitudes and positive correlation in high geomagnetic latitudes. The negative correlation may be owing to the negative correlation between meteor rate and solar activity revealed by many previous studies. The positive correlation in high geomagnetic latitudes is mostly related to the enhanced IMF during solar maximum.
Observations of Daytime Topside Ionospheric Irregularities in the Afternoon Equatorial Ionosphere

Abstract:Previous observations show that the daytime irregularities (the fossil of nighttime irregularities) are mostly located in the low latitude region and at 10-14 LT. In this study, daytime topside ionospheric irregularities were observed along the longitude of ∼94 o E by Swarms satellite in the afternoon equatorial ionosphere (about 15:00 LT) on 18 June, 2020. Simultaneously, the F3 layer were observed in the bottomside ionosphere. Occurrences of F3 layer shows that there are disturbances on the zonal electric field. Multi-satellite observations show that the topside ionospheric irregularities did not occur in the morning equatorial ionosphere. Results indicate that afternoon ionospheric irregularities might be associated with the electrodynamic process of the plasma in the equatorial ionosphere. Simulations show that the combined effects of the disturbed zonal electric field and velocity shears in zonal plasma drift can be favorable to increase the occurrence rate of daytime ionospheric irregularities in the topside equatorial ionosphere.

Daytime E Region Field‐aligned Irregularities Observed During a Solar Eclipse

Abstract:The driving mechanism of the midlatitude field-aligned irregularities (FAIs) has been in dispute for many years. The experimental observations were carried out during the solar eclipse of 22 July 2009 in Wuhan, China, to study the possibility of the wave-driven irregularities. A high-frequency coherent scatter radar was used to detect the E region irregularities. An ionosonde was applied to record the trace of gravity waves in ionosphere. The E region FAIs occurred at the end of the solar eclipse with fluctuant Doppler. At the same time, the oscillations on the fE(s) (maximum reflecting frequency of E-s) curve and in the Doppler velocity of the echoes from the E-s layer were also recorded. The data analysis and comparison show that the gravity waves and the FAIs occurred at the same time with the in-phase variations in amplitude and phase. Thus, the solar eclipse and the gravity waves may play important roles in the occurrence of the irregularities. A schematic diagram of one-period gravity wave is used to explain the possible gravity wave-driven mechanism and the Doppler fluctuation in the irregularities. The daytime FAI in midlatitude is a rare phenomenon, even in the condition of solar eclipse. There are only four cases of the E region FAIs observed during a solar eclipse, including our observations. The unique feature of our observations is the synchronized oscillations in the irregularities and in the E-s layer, which will help address the outstanding question of the source of the midlatitude E region FAIs.

Abstract:The Global Navigation Satellite System Radio Occultation (GNSS-RO) technique has proven to be a powerful tool for studying E-region irregularities, i.e., Sporadic E (Es) which is primarily associated with the amplitude and phase scintillations. In the present study, an extensive 7-year GNSS-RO scintillation indices data from the Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere, and Climate (COSMIC) observations was employed to investigate the global distribution and seasonal variation of the Es occurrences under solar activity near the magnetic dip equator. Our analysis from the Earth's magnetic field parameters such as horizontal intensity and inclination estimated by the International Geomagnetic Reference Field model (IGRF) reveals that Earth's magnetic field plays a crucial role in determining the global distribution of Es layers. Moreover, the abundance of Es shows a clear dependence on season/longitude, and the occurrence statistics of Es are closely aligned with the earlier reports. The solar activity dependence of the Es occurrence characteristics demonstrates its significant reduction with increased solar activity for most of the seasons in all longitude sectors. We address the Gradient Drift instability as a source mechanism of the Es layer's appearance at the magnetic dip equator, where wind shear theory fails to operate because of the minimal inclination of the geomagnetic field.

Effect of the Coupling of Different Ionospheric Regions on the Nighttime F Region Irregularities in Mid-Low Latitudes

Abstract:The formation and evolution of ionospheric irregularities are closely connected with the instabilities of ionospheric plasma. However, no much consideration of the coupling between upper and lower parts of the ionosphere has ever been taking into account so far in the study of such instabilities in mid-and low latitudes. In this paper, a full discussion was presented on the roles played by the existence of both E region Pedersen and Hall conductivity and F region Pedersen conductivity. A complete and common expression of ionospheric plasma gradient-drift instability under such a coupling was deduced for mid-and low latitudes based on a three-layer model developed earlier only valid for high latitude area. With this model, the observed phenomenon that in some places, the instability occurrence rate is higher in the top F region than in the bottom-side can be explained well. Besides, the model also shows that the evolution of nighttime F region gradient-drift instability will be slowed down due to the coupling between E and F regions and make the instability growth rate vary with directions in mid-latitude. It is concluded that the development of gradient-drift instability in nighttime F region not only depends on the local conditions, but also is affected by state of E region that connected to F region with the geomagnetic field lines.

Abstract:Longitudinal variations of the nighttime E layer electron density (21:00-03:00 magnetic local time) in the auroral zone are investigated, and their sources are discussed in terms of auroral precipitation and solar radiation. The electron density data used in this study are retrieved from Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere, and Climate radio occultation observations during 2006-2009 under quiet geomagnetic activity (Kp3) and solar minimum conditions. The main conclusions of this study are as follows: (1) the nighttime E layer electron density had pronounced longitudinal variations in the auroral zone. These variations depended on season and had large hemispheric asymmetry for all seasons. In winter, relatively larger electron density was located in 120-310 degrees magnetic longitude (MLON) in the northern hemisphere and in 170-360 degrees MLON in the southern hemisphere, and greater maximum density occurred in the northern hemisphere than in the southern one. In summer and equinox, the longitudinal asymmetry was greater in the southern hemisphere. (2) The peaks of the E layer electron density along latitude generally occurred between 65 degrees and 70 degrees magnetic latitude in the auroral zone in all seasons for both hemispheres except for the sunlit sector of the southern summer. (3) The greater electron density in local winter in the auroral zone was generally associated with the more intense auroral precipitation intensity at roughly the same longitude, whereas the longitudinal patterns of the electron density were under the combined impact of both auroral precipitation and solar radiation in the local summer and equinoxes.
